My favorite Megadeth song. I'm kind of embarrassed to say my son told me, hey Dad I have a friend at school his name is Justis and his dad Dave Mustaine is a rockstar I had no idea who he was. Justis spent a lot of time over at our house playing music with my son and Dave and his wife Pam came over a couple times and they're very down-to-earth and super nice people. Dave is a very intelligent guy.

David Ellefson’s bass was one of the things that always set Megadeth apart, to me. He didn’t just double the guitar riffs. His creative walking bass lines made the songs that much more interesting...and the fact that the albums were mixed so that the bass was audible!
Dave mustaine and Megadeth are criminally underrated in my opinion. One of the few metal bands to stay true throughout the whole discography. Also through many lineup changes. The testament to Dave's greatness.
Dave Ellefson is probably the absolute greatest Metal Bassist I've ever heard, and he really doesn't get enough credit for Megadeth's sound. Most people focus too much on the guitar tones and don't realize how much the bass guitar actually contributes to the guitar's tone.
Absolutely!! Also really nice dave and the producers gave the bass enough headroom in the mixes to actually hear these amazing basslines. Looking at you ...and justice for all. Bad ulrich, bad hetfield.

Good point dude. I'm not a fan of the remastered stuff, in general. On that note (no pun intended) today's modern metal is way overprocessed and over-polished...ugh! Sure, you want the mix to sound good, but there's a 'rawness' to metal that we also want.
Y'know, I thought I was a bit weird but someone else likes the pre-remastered too - I find the modern versions always a little "Dettol Wipes" and it is the only way I can describe that.
A few years ago I bought a second copy of the original Countdown to Extinction CD just because I hate the idea that someday the ghastly 2004 remix could be the only version available. That's how much I despise the remixes :D
Interestingly, the clicking sound is achieved by actually tapping the pick on the pickup, EMG pickup I believe. I read this in a tab sometime after the album was released.

In 97 I got to see Vic and the rattleheads (aka Megadeth) at this tiny club called "The Electric Ballroom" in Phx, Az and when they played Symphony I thought the club was going to split at the seams. I think this was a warm up show for the Cryptic writings tour. So badass to see Dave & Dave, Marty and Nick all on stage together at the same time (by far the best Megadeth lineup ever).
Nick Menza RIP.. What a beautiful monster he was. Saw him live 1995 with his crazy kit complete with metal chains hanging and stuff. Great stuff Rick thank you.
I love the opening lyrics to this song. "You take a mortal man. And put him in control." So kewl to me. It's a precursor for disaster . You take imperfection (mortal man) and give him power.(control) A disaster waiting to happen. Very well written.
This song is great cuz dave wrote it in '92, when we were still young, and full of piss n vinegar...most artists do their best work in their 20s n early 30s...few can keep quality high for 20+yrs. Glad he still tours though. So many of our favz are dead n gone now, catch em while you still can yo..

Somewhere there's a sort of industrial remix of it, and that part is really up front. Until now I thought that effect was only in the remix.....so cool
Megadeth were on top of their game back then, and Max Norman did a hell of a job on this record. It sounds A-MA-ZING One thing that is really unique is Marty Friedman's lead tone. It has that low end where only some pick attack and the small inconsistencies caused by his unusual technique ring out. It helps his solos sound more authentic, it makes them stand out more. Nowadays most people would filter that stuff out, which is a shame because in this case, that's exactly what reminds the listener he's listening to an actual performance. Granted it's also a production thing: Mustaine left tons of space in the songs for Friedman's solos to shine.
Rick Beato is just a musically educated version of what we all put our girlfriends through. "And then the drums will come in and this this roll, complimenting the guitar part at..." -"Uh huh. That's great." lol

Growing up in the 80s listening to punk rock and thrash metal made me really appreciate this record even more because of it’s insanely huge drum and bass engineering. It was the first heavy record that sounded MASSIVE on my car stereo.

Unfortunately he chose to do meth which messed with his brain. There's a video where he's showcasing some cymbals (probably one of the last videos he recorded) where you can clearly see that he's completely out of it.
André Silva yes I remember seeing that .. he was endorsing Soul tone cymbals at the time .. he was a hot mess.. but Dave mustaines son put up a video of a secret drummer that was auditioning and it was Nick behind the kit .. but unfortunately.. because of money Nick never got the chance to rejoin the band .

I love this song one of my most favorite megadeth songs to play and listen to. I saw a video of Dave mustaine talking this saying it was supposed to be a filler song but actually became one of their biggest hits
Friedman's solos are so precise, fluid and clean it sounds like video game. In his book Mustaine said Marty was the most incredible player he'd ever known and that he considered him even better than himself to the point he was secretly jealous
I’m pretty sure Symphony was my introduction to Megadeth as well. Tornado of Souls was a close second. I’m a thrash-head, and I’d say Megadeth is my 2nd favourite musically,, although I respect the band more than my favourite thrash band. I just love that Dave has never stopped working; always touring and always making music.
Bass part over the chorus guitars is brilliant. It’s stuff like that that made me a bass player. The guitar part is already beautiful, but that walking bass motion up while the guitars have chromatic motion down is just, 👌👌👌👌. It makes the whole section IMO. Keeps a “pretty” part rockin while also adding more motion and color. And it’s not too much. Perfect.
From production, sound effects, modes, chords, moods and the breaking down licks damn what more could a musician ask for. Rick the all-in-one musictionary.
Brilliant!!!! My favorite band of all time. This demonstrates how leaps ahead Megadeth (of this era) was, MUSICALLY from their competitors. So much of this was due to Marty's influence, no doubt. Who the hell dislikes this? Camaaaan! Keep up the stellar work dude!

Although I know the whole song is great, that Marty Friedman solo in particular for me is just awesome. The phrasing, the rhythmic concepts on the note grouping, the bluesy licks, the harmonic work, the vibratos... Man, so much stuff going on in a compact solo that isn´t even 30 seconds long. That´s what I call being a pro.
This dude is awsome. I met Marty Friedman and his parents many years ago when I was attending Musicians Institute. And yes, he played the solo from Tornado Of Souls. He's a really nice guy, and so are his mom and dad.
Great break down. The solo that really slayed me was Tornado of Souls. I know it’s borderline heresy for some, but that solo is the Stairway to Heaven solo of thrash metal. I’d Love hear Rick pick that one apart. Just genius.
Agree. I learned tornado of souls and symphony of destruction solo. Tornado took me about 4 weeks. Symphony was about 2 . They both sound great but there was some special stuff in tornado of souls that make you rethink your playing. 🤘🏼
Marty Friedman is lightyears ahead of all metal guitarists. His approach to melody is unmatched and any musician can and should learn from his phrasing

Megadeth brought a sense of progressive architecture to thrash metal song writing than no other band did, and Metallica never would have allowed, I don’t think. The Mustaine/Friedman duo was light years ahead of the music scene, even by today’s standards. The perfect soundtrack of a dystopian future.
I haven't actually listened to Megadeth for over a decade, this vid made me totally wanna go put an album on straight after, but before I got to that point and put an album on I was reading comments. This one made me go straight to ToS, as it sparked the reminder in me and was totally correct. 🤘🏻 One of the greatest of the whole era, and although I'd forgotten I knew from my teenage years it was a corker.... correct!!!

Obviously there's something about these songs that reaches a lot of people. And in this one it's the verse groove and hook-ey chorus. And the production. Literally everyone who claims to have listened to Megadeth at some point in their lives knows about Holy Wars, so its as popular and pivotal as Symphony, if not more ( Just like Sandman vs Puppets for Metallica ). That song represents and sums up what Megadeth is best acclaimed for 1000X more than Symphony Of Destruction.

Actually, I've heard songs from the album they did with Vinnie Colaiuta, but that's because I'm nuts about drums. I'm not a big fan so it makes sense this is the only song I know.
I'm not even really what you'd call a Megadeth fan at all because I just can't get into Dave's vocals but I think Hangar 18 is a really cool song. My buddy is a HUGE Megadeth fan though. I guess of the somewhat "80's metal" bands I might like Queensryche the most and think Empire and Jet City Woman are really cool songs.

The only indigenous 'metal' bands that were household names in the 80s and got significant MTV time were the glam guys in LA. Did you ever stumble upon their song 'Peace Sells' that used to be the bass intro to MTV News for the longest time ?

Now days as a new and learning producer everything is electronic....hip hop and EDM or Pop in the mainstream. Rick, I'm sure my comments will get buried in the mix, but I wanted to let you know that I discovered your publications over the COVID outbreak and very much appreciate all the great insights that you provide to hobby musicians and the general populace (both of which I consider myself a member). Your approach is reminiscent of the Leonard Bernstein classical music appreciation shows in the 1940s (or 50s) that my father grew up on, in terms of the depth that you add to the rock music experience. The fact that you blend music theory, general appreciation, and instrument technology is phenomenal. I never get bored with the variety of information that you share. And your enthusiasm is positively infectious! You are definitely someone I would add to my top ten list of people (living or dead) that I would want to grab a beer with. Thank you for what you do!

Honest question here from someone who is new to megadeth, is the “so far so good so what” album really that disliked? because I barely hear fans talking about it
@@danielalmeida7382 There's some good stuff on it, but it's not as solid from start to finish as any of their classic albums. They were doing so many drugs at the time it very clearly affected the songwriting in a negative way & half the album just feels kind of thrown together.
Only things you missed (I think): a) how Ellefson's bass under the repeated guitar riff creates the chord progression of the pre-chorus: E-G-C-A-D and then the chromatic thing; b) how Menza switches to half-time (one of his specialties) in the back halves of the second two choruses.
Marty Friedman literally saved my life at a Megadeth show back in 90-91. I was a small-ish (5" 6" 140lb) 19 year old and I was getting pummeled in the mosh pit. I made my way to the rail seeking shelter and then the crowd started to surge crushing me against the rail. I don't know what Marty saw, but he signaled to a security meathead to pull me out of there and after he did, he hung an all-access pass around my neck and led me to the side stage in the wings. This was on the tour with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth with Alice in Chains opening. I got to meet most of my metal heroes that day and I didn't get killed! the venue was Darien Lake in Western NY.
Rick, I would love to see a video on the evolution of recording. Like the early days of recording and how it evevolved into modern recording. And maybe why it sounded the way it did at certain eras.
I'm normally one to jump all over the negative youtube lists and such for a bit of cheap entertainment and opinion confirmation, but... with this channel actually I think it's way more interesting to just keep talking about the positive stuff. There are so many rubbish songs and mostly what makes them crap is exactly the same stuff... I just don't see it being as entertaining to watch honestly.
This reminds me of being a metal head/skater/drummer kid back then. In junior high, trying to learn all Metallica, Megadeth, Overkill, Anthrax, Testament songs by ear. Good times. Thanks Rick.
Great breakdown of this song. By far my favorite Megadeth album. Marty, and actually Dave's guitar playing were just awesome. Actually this version of Megadeth, with Mart and Nick was my favorite lineup. I was playing in a metal cover band in college when this album was released and I made it my mission to nail this album in its entirety so I could come to rehearsal and ask,"Anyone want to give any of the new Megadeth album a shot?" Marty has always been so unique. I heard a friend say, "If liquid butter could shred, THAT would be Marty Friedman." That's the best description I have heard in reference to how smooth Marty sounds.

Been listening to this song for the last twenty five years and never heard that special effects track...till today.
Somewhere there's a sort of industrial remix of it, and that part is really up front. Until now I thought that effect was only in the remix.....so cool
The "Gristle Mix" came out on a CD single release. Trent Reznor did the remix. I think there were a couple other versions of the song on the CD too.

Megadeth were on top of their game back then, and Max Norman did a hell of a job on this record. It sounds A-MA-ZING
One thing that is really unique is Marty Friedman's lead tone. It has that low end where only some pick attack and the small inconsistencies caused by his unusual technique ring out.
It helps his solos sound more authentic, it makes them stand out more. Nowadays most people would filter that stuff out, which is a shame because in this case, that's exactly what reminds the listener he's listening to an actual performance. Granted it's also a production thing: Mustaine left tons of space in the songs for Friedman's solos to shine.
Mustaine is a great songwriter and IMO one if the best metal guitar players out there... His riffs are insane!

Growing up in the 80s listening to punk rock and thrash metal made me really appreciate this record even more because of it’s insanely huge drum and bass engineering. It was the first heavy record that sounded MASSIVE on my car stereo.

There's a video where he's showcasing some cymbals (probably one of the last videos he recorded) where you can clearly see that he's completely out of it.
André Silva yes I remember seeing that .. he was endorsing Soul tone cymbals at the time .. he was a hot mess.. but Dave mustaines son put up a video of a secret drummer that was auditioning and it was Nick behind the kit .. but unfortunately.. because of money Nick never got the chance to rejoin the band .

I love this song one of my most favorite megadeth songs to play and listen to. I saw a video of Dave mustaine talking this saying it was supposed to be a filler song but actually became one of their biggest hits
Friedman's solos are so precise, fluid and clean it sounds like video game. In his book Mustaine said Marty was the most incredible player he'd ever known and that he considered him even better than himself to the point he was secretly jealous

Symphony Of Destruction's the very first Megadeth song that I've listened. Since then I've been listening to a lot of Megadeth songs.
I’m pretty sure Symphony was my introduction to Megadeth as well. Tornado of Souls was a close second. I’m a thrash-head, and I’d say Megadeth is my 2nd favourite musically,, although I respect the band more than my favourite thrash band. I just love that Dave has never stopped working; always touring and always making music.

Bass part over the chorus guitars is brilliant. It’s stuff like that that made me a bass player. The guitar part is already beautiful, but that walking bass motion up while the guitars have chromatic motion down is just, 👌👌👌👌. It makes the whole section IMO. Keeps a “pretty” part rockin while also adding more motion and color. And it’s not too much. Perfect.
That lineup is probably the most talented lineup in metal, ever.

Brilliant!!!! My favorite band of all time. This demonstrates how leaps ahead Megadeth (of this era) was, MUSICALLY from their competitors. So much of this was due to Marty's influence, no doubt. Who the hell dislikes this? Camaaaan! Keep up the stellar work dude!

Rick Beato's content is a blessing. I can watch his videos and learn about music I dont usually listen and I love the way he explains things so that even non fans and non musicians can appreciate it.
Although I know the whole song is great, that Marty Friedman solo in particular for me is just awesome. The phrasing, the rhythmic concepts on the note grouping, the bluesy licks, the harmonic work, the vibratos... Man, so much stuff going on in a compact solo that isn´t even 30 seconds long. That´s what I call being a pro.
This dude is awsome. I met Marty Friedman and his parents many years ago when I was attending Musicians Institute. And yes, he played the solo from Tornado Of Souls. He's a really nice guy, and so are his mom and dad.
Great break down. The solo that really slayed me was Tornado of Souls. I know it’s borderline heresy for some, but that solo is the Stairway to Heaven solo of thrash metal. I’d Love hear Rick pick that one apart. Just genius.
Agree. I learned tornado of souls and symphony of destruction solo. Tornado took me about 4 weeks. Symphony was about 2 . They both sound great but there was some special stuff in tornado of souls that make you rethink your playing. 🤘🏼
Marty Friedman is lightyears ahead of all metal guitarists. His approach to melody is unmatched and any musician can and should learn from his phrasing

Megadeth brought a sense of progressive architecture to thrash metal song writing than no other band did, and Metallica never would have allowed, I don’t think. The Mustaine/Friedman duo was light years ahead of the music scene, even by today’s standards. The perfect soundtrack of a dystopian future.
I haven't actually listened to Megadeth for over a decade, this vid made me totally wanna go put an album on straight after, but before I got to that point and put an album on I was reading comments. This one made me go straight to ToS, as it sparked the reminder in me and was totally correct. 🤘🏻 One of the greatest of the whole era, and although I'd forgotten I knew from my teenage years it was a corker.... correct!!!

But, Dave is more than a "good" rythm guitarist. His lead style is unique, and he often layered them with vocals.

Obviously there's something about these songs that reaches a lot of people. And in this one it's the verse groove and hook-ey chorus. And the production. Notice you won't find any unpopular songs by a band on "what makes this song great". .
@@mattmarkus4868 I'm sorry, but 'Holy Wars...The Punishment Due' is NOT a 'deeper cut'. Literally everyone who claims to have listened to Megadeth at some point in their lives knows about Holy Wars, so its as popular and pivotal as Symphony, if not more ( Just like Sandman vs Puppets for Metallica ). That song represents and sums up what Megadeth is best acclaimed for 1000X more than Symphony Of Destruction.

Actually, I've heard songs from the album they did with Vinnie Colaiuta, but that's because I'm nuts about drums. I'm not a big fan so it makes sense this is the only song I know.
I'm not even really what you'd call a Megadeth fan at all because I just can't get into Dave's vocals but I think Hangar 18 is a really cool song. My buddy is a HUGE Megadeth fan though. I guess of the somewhat "80's metal" bands I might like Queensryche the most and think Empire and Jet City Woman are really cool songs.
@@mattmarkus4868 Well, then you missed out on most of the masterpieces that these American metal bands from the 80s ( Megadeth, Metallica etc. ) put out, as none of them were on the 'radio'. The only indigenous 'metal' bands that were household names in the 80s and got significant MTV time were the glam guys in LA.

Rick....I love this series. As a relatively amateur producer this is an amazing series and endlessssss fun and information for me. Now days as a new and learning producer everything is electronic....hip hop and EDM or Pop in the mainstream. So getting to watch a video where someone is analyzing rock or metal and stuff outside that computerized world...AND has the stems...oh man this is so great.

Your approach is reminiscent of the Leonard Bernstein classical music appreciation shows in the 1940s (or 50s) that my father grew up on, in terms of the depth that you add to the rock music experience. The fact that you blend music theory, general appreciation, and instrument technology is phenomenal. I never get bored with the variety of information that you share. And your enthusiasm is positively infectious! You are definitely someone I would add to my top ten list of people (living or dead) that I would want to grab a beer with. Thank you for what you do!

@@danielalmeida7382 There's some good stuff on it, but it's not as solid from start to finish as any of their classic albums. They were doing so many drugs at the time it very clearly affected the songwriting in a negative way & half the album just feels kind of thrown together.

Only things you missed (I think): a) how Ellefson's bass under the repeated guitar riff creates the chord progression of the pre-chorus: E-G-C-A-D and then the chromatic thing; b) how Menza switches to half-time (one of his specialties) in the back halves of the second two choruses.

Marty Friedman literally saved my life at a Megadeth show back in 90-91. I was a small-ish (5" 6" 140lb) 19 year old and I was getting pummeled in the mosh pit. I made my way to the rail seeking shelter and then the crowd started to surge crushing me against the rail. I don't know what Marty saw, but he signaled to a security meathead to pull me out of there and after he did, he hung an all-access pass around my neck and led me to the side stage in the wings. This was on the tour with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth with Alice in Chains opening. I got to meet most of my metal heroes that day and I didn't get killed! the venue was Darien Lake in Western NY.

I'm normally one to jump all over the negative youtube lists and such for a bit of cheap entertainment and opinion confirmation, but... with this channel actually I think it's way more interesting to just keep talking about the positive stuff. There are so many rubbish songs and mostly what makes them crap is exactly the same stuff... I just don't see it being as entertaining to watch honestly.
This reminds me of being a metal head/skater/drummer kid back then. In junior high, trying to learn all Metallica, Megadeth, Overkill, Anthrax, Testament songs by ear.

Great breakdown of this song. By far my favorite Megadeth album. Marty, and actually Dave's guitar playing were just awesome. Actually this version of Megadeth, with Mart and Nick was my favorite lineup.
I was playing in a metal cover band in college when this album was released and I made it my mission to nail this album in its entirety so I could come to rehearsal and ask,"Anyone want to give any of the new Megadeth album a shot?"
Marty has always been so unique. I heard a friend say, "If liquid butter could shred, THAT would be Marty Friedman." That's the best description I have heard in reference to how smooth Marty sounds.
