Great build, I have almost the same Smallrig rig, save the baseplate, which I will now order, so thanks for this 🍷
Added the SIRUI S35 35mm f1.8 anamorphic lens last month, works like a dream on the S5.
Also the SIRUI 1.25x anamorphic adaptor which I can use with a variety of legacy glass.

Was just looking at these types a videos last night. I think our brains are on the same rig cycle!
do you rig your camera in the same way? two handles?
I have a left side handle and put my follow focus on the right side via the included smallrig nato rail (attached to the top of the s5 cage). This way I can support the camera with my palm and follow focus at the same time with my right hand. An indirect benefit to this method is your top handle has a nato rail. Another benefit of mounting the follow focus system on top of your cage is If I decide to use any native glass (s series); close focusing is turning the ring towards you and infinity focusing is turning the ring away from you. When I have the follow focus mounted underneath or onto the side, the opposite is true. Again, that’s only if I’m using lumix s lenses. I’m not sure of the behavior of rokinon’s or other manufacturers focus ring but something to keep in mind next time you want to use your rig with native lenses.
Also side note: your smallrig follow focus can be downsized to fit small set ups. I ended up splitting up the arms on mine. Nice to know that smallrig really plans out how their products can be used before releasing them 🤘🏼
I like small rig. @8sinn was another company I came across that look well made. I also like the @nitze handle. With a small rig baseplate….Well I just gave me future buildout

Awesome walkthrough on your rig. I am a big fan of the S5 too and agree the stabilization is very good but would not try to hand hold it unless shooting in 50fps or higher.
I film interviews hand held with it very often - it's stable enough when you put your mind to it

Looks very good! I have the same follow focus but it is much to stiff to turn it with my finger tips. Maybe something is wrong with it. I prefer to mount it on the cage because the base unit is not doing much else than adding weight.
you can adjust the torque of the follow focus wheel
@@PavSZ I don't see a way. If I turn it, the camera always moves. There is no way to keep it steady unless I press camera and cage to my body. My other follow focus (fotga dp500 III) is much lighter to turn.
I love the rig and use most of what you’ve shared. Curious, do you carry fully assembled or mostly assembled in a bag? Is so, what type?
I do transport it partially assembled. Camera in the cage and all other parts separate. It takes me 5 min to assemble it all

Great video pav,I jus discovered your channel,love the amount of information you bring out from gears to tutorials to short films,I have subscribed and watched few videos..I wonder if you can give me your opinion as I see you use the Nikon z6,what’s a better long term investment the Panasonic S5 or Nikon Z6 for narrative short/web series films and digital ads..my main concern is I’m on a budget and Panasonic s5 comes with the variable aperture kit lens where I will need to buy other faster lens as with the same price I can get the z6 with the f4 kit..also I hear Panasonic l mount lens are more expensive as well as the sigma ones don’t adapt well with auto focus issues,but am worried adapting Cine lens will be more difficult for the z mount as it’s a newer mount and Nikon is not really known for cine lens option unlike canon Sony Panasonic.

I use both Nikon Z6 and Lumix S5 and Lumix S5 is a better camera overall.
The AF is much better than people say if used correctly and the lenses are not that expensive in comparison as you have full Sigma catalogue available for L-mount as well as Lumix lenses.
@@PavSZ thank you pav for the reply, I guess the internal 10bit 4.2.2 is a big advantage esp since without the Atmos ninja you will be stuck shooting 8bit with the Nikon.
I was wondering: do you happen to know what lens you used to film this video? I see a lot of fringing on high contrasting edges when they are in front of the focal plane. It doesn't effect the informativity of your video, though :)

I used Sigma 50mm f1.4 on Nikon Z6 for all the talking parts and all the b-roll with Sony a7III and Sony 24-105mm f4
Smallrig has a wireless follow focus module called MagicFIZ in form of a handle you can attack to the side, I think thats probably the perfect combo to turn S5 or any camera into a camcorder from 1995 except its 3 times smaller and more compact and does not weight upwards of 5 to 7 kg.
Follow focus that you can control while also adding grip to the camera with only downside of having to add another battery but if you are using a monitor and it possess power output, you can power the entire thing with 1 battery while also maintaining bulk to a minimum as I am sure most people rather not have 2kg of bulk added, gets pretty heavy pretty fast.

yes. There is another cold shoe on the cage and you can add more. SmallRig makes small attachable ones

I find my remote handle from SD work sometimes and not others. Do you need to format camera in setting to work remote ? Or should it just plug in and go ?

sorry, no. I don't use any specific setting for video. Those constantly change depending on the job and the lighting
Does the handle get in the way of the flip screen?
not much. I always use it with a monitor so HDMI cable is actually more in the way than the handle itself

yes and no. I still use Nikon Z6 and Sony a7III (a7IV on its way) but I LOVE S5
nitze is better set up then SMALLRIG for s5
