  • Everyone knows Pikachu, the most popular Pokémon EVER. But who is the LEAST popular Pokémon? There are over 900 Pokémon, with even more being introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, so which Pokémon do people care the LEAST about? In this video, I'll be using data from Google to find out the top 10 least popular Pokémon!

Thanks so much to everyone who tweeted their Pokémon hot takes at me, even if they didn’t make it into the final video!
There was an error at 5:36 - the on screen text should say: "Gen 7"
This video took a lot more work than normal - watching the final video, I kind of glossed over how long it took me to figure out A) how to rank the Pokémon, and B) how to get reliable Google search data. So thanks to my Patrons for making videos like this possible!
Lastly, I do know about Google Trends, a website that allows you to compare Google search data. But that tool wouldn’t have worked for this video (I tried using it, believe me!). To compare so many different search terms, I needed absolute data - for instance, Pikachu gets 4 million searches per month. Google Trends doesn’t give out raw numbers like that, so I had to go down the Google Ads route instead.

I actually admire what they tried to do with gen 5... Completely ignore the previous gens until after you completed the game... It forces you to use the new pokemon and discover what each one is capable of, rather than stampede towards collecting your favourites from previous gens and ignoring all the new ones.

Generation 5 has many of my favorite pokemon. Many designs are brilliant like volcarona, golurk, cofagrigus, mandibuzz, hydreigon, and so on. Even some of the "lazy" designs like garbodor and klinklang are admittedly cool monster designs. But also these pokemon just oozed personality especially with their active moving sprites. Yeah there are many that just tried too hard to be a direct analog to generation 1 pokemon, and a few that just don't stand out. But that's the same with every generation, it's just most noticeable in the generation with the most new pokemon.

It's a good idea, but I think they dropped the ball with it because so many of the new pokemon were so obviously made to fill the same space as previous pokemon, particularly gen 1, so they're easier to forget as their theming is already used.
Even forgiving the normal patterns; early bird, normal type rodent, Pikachu clone, etc; there's Machop line to Timburr, Geodude line to Rogenrolla, Throh and Sawk for Hitmonchan/lee, and Ralts line to Gothita, and others as well but you get the point. No, this list is just terrible. I get what he was trying to do, but the first thing I noticed was the second stage thing. This means, most people probably looked up the first, or last stage, went to bulbapedia or serebii, and then found what they were looking for. Or, like me, they didn't give a s*** about the middle stage, cause it's the one you will remember the least. If you were to do a real test, I bet 5 would still be near the top of the bottom, but it would probably, actually be more later game trade evolutions like Rhyperior, or Magmortar that would truly take the prize. Basically, I have found that anything that is simply annoying to get, isn't going to get talked about, or cared about in the long run. Trade evolutions, Minus the OG 4, are just annoying, and the ones that require items, and during POST GAME, just not worth it.

    • @ThomasGameDocs
      @ThomasGameDocs  ปีที่แล้ว +32

Ah no, don't worry, I didn't have to do all that! In terms of paying for ads, I only had to run a single campaign for this video, and it was actually unrelated to Pokemon. Google just won't give specific numbers for keywords if you don't have an active ad campaign on your account with a bit of money spent on it (they don't tell you exactly how much you need to spend, but it's not very much, only a few days worth of having a campaign up and running is enough!)
From there I used the keyword tool which thankfully lets you paste in a list of keywords, so I just pasted in a list I put together of all 900+ Pokemon. Then I just sorted the results from lowest to highest and voila!

The latest games were the gen IV remakes, which had ONLY mons up to gen IV and Legends Arceus, set in essentially the same region. Every pokemon on this list appears in neither of these games, skewing these numbers. I feel like this should have been adressed

I feel like part of the Gen 5 thing is that it is a victim of essentially being the middle child of Pokémon. It wasn’t part of the originals that everyone remembers from being kids in the 90s-00s, and it’s not recent enough for many people to still be on many peoples’ minds.

  • @Tanjams

I think most of these still have something going for them, ice cream is great and it's weird and wacky, slime ball is odd and super cute, whirly ball is a bug and pretty rad, coal could be cool to some but kinda uncanny weird face, pokey bird is cool if basic and woodpeckers are neat, other bird is aight but forgettable.
Others are just NOPE, WEIRD, and UNCANNY imo. (if you like the monkey, trolls (characters) like aesthetic, I could see that being appealing to some)
Also, this likely excludes Pokemon that are commonly searched because they are hated. I guess infamous is still a form famous/popular in a way, so this list still holds.

Gen 5 is also kind of awkward. It was the first gen on a console a previous gen was on and in said console’s last year at that. The 3DS literally came out a month after BW and more than a year before BW2. And most people are nostalgic for the story as it’s iconic, not the mons. No major shakeup in battles helps either. Closest was the addition of hidden abilities but that’s just new abilities for older pokemon. That doesn’t help the ones in gen 5 stand out. And gen 5 competitive was meh because they actually put drought and drizzle on non legendaries and caused utter bedlam with it

I'm noticing something... if adding too many new Pokémon at once and making them too "cool" ended up giving said Pokémon a struggle to be loved and noticed... then that explains why they are now adding fewer new Pokémon, re-vamping and re-decorating older Pokémon, and just adding a lot of round, spherical, and circular Pokémon in general. It's like they just hit the reverse-break with full force on that one.

One issue that is likely to skew the results is that most of these are middle evolutions, which people are unlikely to search for.
If I want to use the Venipede line in my in-game team, I'd search for Venipede to find its location.
If I want to use the Venipede line in battles against other players, I'd search for Scolipede and what are good strategies for it.
There's not really a scenario where searching for the middle evolution is the way to go. As for the Simis and Watchog, I guess this just means that very few people want to use them at all. And another reason for Gen 5's unpopularity likely stems from the lower sales of these games. A lot more people own XY, SM, SwSh and so on than BW so people are more likely to search for those games' Pokémon.

One issue with Gen 5’s designs isn’t even a “quantity over quality” thing but like… look, in every Pokémon game you gotta encounter a few regular ones in the early game. Some birds, a rodent, some bugs. If all the early game rodents available are really weird and unique, then the game is missing a regular Pokémon for the player to encounter. But if you make Patrat too similar to Rattata, it’s going to feel really lame when the player actually unlocks Rattata in the postgame. So you end up with a lot of early game Pokémon that are kind of in this limbo between being simple and unique. Sawk and Throh are the worst offenders of this IMO, they clearly just wanted something to fill in for the Hitmon line but couldn’t do the same thing again so they did… blue guy red guy. Gen 5 has great designs like Hydreigon but they’re almost all late game only.

I think another example is that roggenrola's line is clearly just the Geodude line minus ground type.
But then Timbur definitely felt unique when i first found it. (Although i was really expecting it to be grass type, but considering it's line upgrades to heavier objects it makes sense, although going grass/fighting -> steel/fighting -> rock/fighting would have certainly been unique, not necessarily good, but unique)
I think others have already pointed out the real reason gen 5 is so low, sales weren't favorable for it even if we love some of the designs. (Besides this being a least googled list introduces other factors then fame/popularity like searching for stats or encounter locations. For instance Feebass has weird encounter rules and you will want to look up if Milotic is worth it, but patrat/watchog are easily encountered and to determine aren't worth it late game so why google them)

But this also means that certain niches will need to be filled resulting in "clones/knockoffs" like the regional bird, bug, and rodent.
I also like the idea of making a brand new region and just recycling the nearly 1,000 existing pokemon based in when environment they logically would occupy. (For instance in a hypothetical Australia region you would have corsola along the route over the great barrier reef, and sandile in the main desert. Another example is how XD and Colloseum used pokemon from all 3 regions at the time but added no nee ones.)

There is definitely a noticeable factor here, being that most are middle stages, as most people already said. They are the in between that doesn’t get as much attention because the first stage is what you originally befriend, and the last stage is more permanent, but I also think it’s because of the game itself. When people fill out a Pokédex they more often look for baby stages because you can get all three stages checked off by evolving it, so “where to find (first stage)” is more common than “where to find (middle stage)”. However, when adding a Pokémon to your team, one my be curious of what to prepare for when they reach the end point. They will look up things like “(final stage) best nature, or stats” because, as I already said, this is the more permanent stage. Not only that but upon progressing in the game, the tougher trainers like gym leaders and elite four, will more often have fully evolved Pokémon. This leads people to more often search “(final stage) weakness or typing” than the would the middle stage forms, as they aren’t really seen in difficult battles and don’t have different typing from their fist stage as often as the final stage does.
