Atsuko Nishida once said in a Yomiuri interview that he took lot of inspiration from squirrels (with hamster cheeks) for Pikachu because she was obsessed them a lot at the time and also that since Rattata already existed, she had no intention of making another mouse Mokemon. The inaccurate theory that Pikachu is based on a mouse or rat comes from Pikachu's Pokedex which categorize it as a "Mouse Pokemon" which, according to Nishida, was Satoshi Tajiri's idea and independent of Nishida

There was also a pokémon yellow Game boy color released that included pokémon yellow, and it had Pikachu, Togepi, and Jigglypuff on it but every bit of advertising, including the box, was centered on the Pikachu. And it was released in 98 in Japan and 99 in North america
