    Back in the 70's my Mom joined a houseplant club. They send her a file box that looks like a green house and every month she was sent 10 or so cards. Each one was for a different plant. They contained so much info. My Mom passed this down to me (there were 2 boxes). I was having problems with my African Violet, pulled out the card and what do you know!! The card said that these plants do not like cold water! So now I water them with warm water and have beautiful plants! I now have 3 plants because the original plant grew so big!! I don't know if this is new info to a lot of people but it sure was for me!

      I had a partial set of these when I was a kid in the 70s but it is long gone. Last year I found a complete set in an estate sale and I won the bid! I love it!

    Years ago I lived in an apt that had the perfect conditions for growing violets. I propagated leaves without a dome and they grew beautifully. I had so MANY! I would plant the little newbies in tea cups and give them away to friends and family. My "Mom" plants were HUGE. If I remember right, they were about 10' across.

    So many questions answered about African Violets my sister and I were gifted my aunts collection when she passed and I had so many questions some I found answers for but this video answered many more….but one what can you do if you are not getting any blooms ? Very Healthy plants but no signs of blooms? Thank you for all you information you provide in such a accessible way.

    • @jamesthomas280
      @jamesthomas280 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      blooms always come to plants that are nice and healthy and in the right conditions. African violets love bright indirect sunlight all day (morning sun if you can provide it is good too!) They can be fertilised once a month with specialist fertiliser which can promote blooms. Having them in a smaller pot is good too! 1/3 the size of the crown of the plant is a good size for the pot as they bloom easier when potbound. Hope this helps!

    • @trainingolives3370
      @trainingolives3370 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I put African Violet fertilizer in a casserole dish with water and bottom water it every month or so. They do not like overhead water at all. Doing this, they stay in bloom for me.

    • @PottingAbout

      Hi Maureen, there are several things that violets need to bloom but the basics are, the right temperatures, enough light, enough moisture and fertilizer when required. I have a few videos on this if you want to have a look :)

    WOW just WOW!!! I absolutely love your home. That old kitchen is gorgeous. I see why y’all bought that house. It has so much room. That little nook is so cute. I wish I had a room to be able to work on things in the house. My husband planted a little garden last year and he canned a lot of stuff. He’s already getting it ready to plant it this year. He plants food and I plant flowers. We love to be out there together. I have learned so much by watching you and Aaron. My tulips are coming up and I watched your video on how to take care of them when it freezes. So many videos to go back a rewatch to learn. Thank you for what you do and yes I drink my morning coffee watching y’all. Oh the begonia with the urn is beautiful.

    Hello Laura, because spring is coming, in some areas we do already have it, can you dedicate one video for fertilizers, NPK numbers, explanation of the ratio, how can we test the NPK in the soil and how to add it properly into the soil? I believe you will explain it like a pro. I have asked 5 garden centres and 2 had no idea and 3 said it's not important to add anything just liquid fertilizer. I like slow release fertilizer instead. Thank you for your consideration. 🤘

      I know they did some soil tests last year but I don’t think they got a definite answer with the results (they did a couple of different send away tests). I know that they did switch from slow release (espoma flower tone) to a weekly fertilizer for their annual flowers.

    I have found that the humidity dome is totally optional for propagating the African Violet leaves. I ran and side by side test and was amazed that the results were exactly the same. I noticed when starting in water you get "water roots" which are much more sensitive than roots grown in soil so when potting them up you can lose many. Last year was a total flop for me with begonias, I am still trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. But they are coming back so I will try, try again.

    Laura, you can make life easier by getting one of those little bottles from the dollar store that has a little pump on it. You just flip open the bottles and press the little saucer looking top with your cotton ball to wet it. Works great for anything you sometimes have to to one handed. Acetone, alcohol, peroxide, basically any liquid. Can't wait for spring!!!

    Thank you for this. I love African violets but usually do not have much luck with them.
    I do have a question though, for Christmas I got 2 beautiful Christmas Cactuses. I started them off if an east window getting indirect sunlight, they loved it. Then I got the bright idea of moving them to a south bay window, again indirect sunlight. They did well there for about a week and a half. They bloom, but their blooms are dried up before it can fully bloom. I have since moved them back to the south window. They both still have large amounts of blooms but refuse to fully bloom. The plants themselves are beautiful and healthy. I only water them when the first few inches of soil appear dry. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Love the succulents in the tray. That looks good even if you don’t do anything else with them.
    My daughter has had some success with African violets. She started out with two plants. Over the last few years, she has propagated the leaves she’s groomed off and has created dozens and dozens of new plants. We now have around 30 plants that seem to be in constant bloom. Plus she’s given away at least that many more plants to friends. (She has only used the outside leaves in her propagation efforts and always directly into soil. And she never covers them with plastic)

    I like cutting empty loo rolls in half to make two cells and popping them into a large egg box, using the lid as a mini green house.
    I just bought some of those large plastic propagators so will see how they compare. I am also trying out vermiculite as i usually just use home-made compost and worm castings and perlite.
    I heard that coco coir is the best thing to use but i can only see it available online and it doesn't seem like it is regularly available locally in London? Is it really that necessary to add as well to the above?

    Hey from North Carolina! Do the African violets require repotting at this point? Or is this just a way to give yourself more plants?

    • @dawnmitchell11
      @dawnmitchell11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The the necks on those were pretty long. AVs keep their rosette shape better and bloom better if they are kept groomed like this. According to the AV Society of America, they benefit from repotting every 6-12 months. Don't have to be moved up a pot size, they like cramped conditions, but a soil refresh and grooming keeps them performing at their best. Keep them groomed and in cramped conditions to avoid developing babies, they can distort the shape of the rosette.

    I need African violet help lol. My daughter left one at home when she went to college. It hasn’t bloomed since-2 years now. I have it under a grow light, but the leaves sometimes curl under-not warm enough? I’ve never fertilized it and only water it maybe once a month, not on the leaves. What routine do they need ? Thanks 😊

    I might’ve missed you mentioning this, but where will the new leaves for African violets start producing? I know when You propagate succulents a new plant emerges at the new rooted and the old leaf dies off. Is it the same with African violets?

    • @jgwood10
      @jgwood10 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new leaves appear at the base of the stem. Eventually the large leaf will wither and die. When the new plant has developed 2-3 leaves you can repot.

      I had both when I lived in Florida. What she has in this video is the Ric Rac Cactus aka Epiphyllum anguliger. Notice how the edges are more rounded. The Shark Tooth Cactus aka Selenicereus Chrysocardium. This one is wider and pointer like shark teeth. The leaf is also a bit thicker. Both bloom same type of flower, ric rac has a colorful bloom and the shark tooth is white and yellow. Hope this helps!
