He confessed it on his death bed to a priest . He did it so she would not have to take her own life and face damanation . This was the Thirteenth century by the way Rape was a real stigma back then that ruined a woman . It could lead to banishment especially if it was a lord or nobles son who committed the crime . Sadly it's still a stigma in some countries where women choose to die than face perscuation
The Viking culture was not actually as promiscuous as they represent it as being on the show (they weren't really very tolerant of same-sex relationships, adultery, incest or having babies out of wedlock...and yet the only member of Ragnar's family who has not committed one of these crimes is Ivar) However, the Hirsts represent them as having much the same sort of attitude towards sex that people have only recently been allowed to have in the past 100 years or so thanks to the advent of modern medicine and birth control, largely to appeal to people who like to think that people in the past had much the same values as they do today. The truth is that a realistic representation of Viking culture (which had a fairly grim and pragmatic attitude towards sex, based on the necessities of a society that was still geared towards the survival of the collective rather than the individual's pursuit of happiness and pleasure) would probably shock and offend modern viewers!
I thought Astrid became a traitor to Lagertha. But she was just playing all along. She knew there's no future for her and Harald will pursue her if she came with Lagertha. So she made Lagertha kill her.
It was Astrid having been gang raped so therefore not knowing if King Harold was the father or father by one of the men that raped her. You've also forgotten that she tried to send a warning to Lagertha. See episode 6.
For people saying it was Lagertha's grandchild, it's impossible. She could have affairs with bjorn when she was in kattegat, but it's been likely 3 months since she is with harald, she would known it if it was bjorn's. And if you are thinking it's Bjorn's because of the scene we saw on the show, well, it passed almost a year since that moment.

It was a mercy for Astrid and the child . If it had been the rapists child then they would have had a even worse fate , Astrid especially. It wasn't uncommon for women to kill themselves after rape or to get someone else to do it . Sadly in some places of the world it still happens ....

Harald upon discovering the child wasn't his would not have accepted him / her . He needed an heir of his own flesh and blood . This is the first scene i cried to in Vikings. I really loved them together, it seemed like Lagertha was truly happy after all the betrayals that she've got.
Lagertha was never truly happy with Astrid. She liked Astrid but she did not love Astrid. Lagertha's heart only ever belonged to Ragnar. Even after Ragnar cheated on her with Aslaug, Lagertha never stopped loving Ragnar. She mourned Ragnar the rest of her life & when she herself died, she was reunited with Ragnar in Valhalla just as she herself had always wished. She never once displayed that same kind of love or affection to anyone else, Astrid included.

While protectionism may not have been illegal at that time, most competent leaders have avoided committing it since the days of Imperial Rome because it is considered to be bad for the morale of their troops....and yeah, I know this because I come from a family that has produced soldiers and lawyers since the Middle Ages!
I like the scenes where it's just the 2 people fighting & talking. No one else around, like their moment & the battle doesn't matter just them Makes it more intense
If the point of how this was filmed was to show how senseless and dysfunctional this situation had become..they succeeded. I was like, "What the hell is going on", and had to watch it again.
To a degree I blame Lagertha for all of this. She just had to kill Aslaug and become queen to quench her own lust for revenge and power. By that she divided the family and the entire viking world. Sure Harald would've eventually tried to attack her, but without Ivar he would've been too weak and would've been beaten back by the combined might of Ragnar's family.
Lagertha was " fated " to kill Aslaug. Aslaugs little speech before her death and " safe passage " was a way of trying to get through to Lagertha that it was something they both had to do. Aslaug even looked towards the seer before she made the speech , and why she had an almost relieved yet sad smile on her face as she died . She knew Lagertha had understood but knew of the pain to come ahead . The war is going to bring the start of the end for the Viking world .
To be fair Aslaug's death could easily be reinterpreted, and Ivar be the one in the wrong. Aslaug asks Lagertha for safe passage and (considering up to that point she believes Ivar to be dead, which could after all be her reason for living) it could be understood as asking for passage to Valhalla, being sent off by a shieldmaiden. It would explain her smile, and it would explain Lagertha's words when Ivar challenges her to fight about him not understanding what his brothers, his mother and she understand about Aslaug's death. Idk Still, Lagertha's send off (death) should be her sacrificing herself to Ivar or whoever in order to stop the wars between the sons of Ragnar
You're acting like the rulers here aren't the same. Ivar, Ragnar, Rollo all wanted power and revenge. You could say Ragnar going to Paris just to quench his revenge on Rollo became his downfall too. Alfred was the only selfless ruler here
3rd time I'm watching the show as a whole, and just got to this scene again. It still messed me up, this scene is way too sad... It's incredible the show still manages to do this considering how many times I've seen the episodes by now. It will always be my favorite show by a landslide and nothing will ever change that.

Judging by how gas colic is uncomfortable, getting stabbed in the gut must hurt a lot and I doubt you just drift into the long dark within seconds. Even when someone gets toxic mega colon it's a lot of pain over a very short period of time ( the condition has a 98% fatility rate ) . It doesnt take long at all . Spesis also kills within hours . Medical dramas etc tend to drag it out when in reality it doesn't take that long . Blood loss was the killer here as well as shock and it only takes seconds before your blood pressure drops and you loose concious, remember she's probably gone through her stomach and liver as well huge blood loss . I would rather go this way than through spesis / toxic mega colon as quick killers as they are .
It could be they knew the armor wouldn’t stop a direct thrust but in battle you could get many glancing blows that with heavy leather or armor you would survive or not be badly injured. A lot may have have succumbed to accruing non lethal injuries that weakened you to not being able to defend yourself effectively, or blood loss.
I mean this is like really sad she really loved Astrid so much but she did what she had to do one because Astrid requested it to she didn't know about the child and three do you really want to have a child born into a place with nothing but War blood will be shed I'm sure that's what she was thinking through her head but yeah I think at this point she will lose it and just like want to just die i feel so heartbroken for Lagertha

Killing Aslaug was my most sweetest awesome scene from the whole show 😂 and such a relief. Aslaug , is a snake , a serpent filled with poison. She resembles how hidden narcists, fool people in real life. And even her acting was totaly on point. I will never forget the scene when Aslaug enters Kattegat protected by 20 shields ( chickenshit😅). But she was highly fertile , and gave Ragnar a child.. Ragnar was over the moon, but Lagertha couldnt bare children anymore. You can see the heartbrake... And that evil smile of Aslaug , like bye bye.. Ragnar is going to leave you , I , Won. Damn bro , thats pure evil. And changed Lagertha to a mercyless hatefull killing machine, not to save herself. Her only mission was to protect , all what she loved or put harm to her loyal beloved ones. ❤ 😂

Aslaug was a far better queen anyway. During Ragnar's long absence, Aslaug guided Kattegat through a decade of peace and prosperity. By comparison, Lagertha's rule has been constant war and destruction. She's like a politician who can't get along with anybody.

Judging by how gas colic is uncomfortable, getting stabbed in the gut must hurt a lot and I doubt you just drift into the long dark within seconds. Blood loss was the killer here as well as shock and it only takes seconds before your blood pressure drops and you loose concious, remember she's probably gone through her stomach and liver as well huge blood loss . I would rather go this way than through spesis / toxic mega colon as quick killers as they are .

It could be they knew the armor wouldn’t stop a direct thrust but in battle you could get many glancing blows that with heavy leather or armor you would survive or not be badly injured. A lot may have have succumbed to accruing non lethal injuries that weakened you to not being able to defend yourself effectively, or blood loss.

Killing Aslaug was my most sweetest awesome scene from the whole show 😂 and such a relief. Aslaug , is a snake , a serpent filled with poison. She resembles how hidden narcists, fool people in real life. And even her acting was totaly on point. I will never forget the scene when Aslaug enters Kattegat protected by 20 shields ( chickenshit😅). But she was highly fertile , and gave Ragnar a child.. Ragnar was over the moon, but Lagertha couldnt bare children anymore. You can see the heartbrake... And that evil smile of Aslaug , like bye bye.. Ragnar is going to leave you , I , Won. Damn bro , thats pure evil. And changed Lagertha to a mercyless hatefull killing machine, not to save herself. Her only mission was to protect , all what she loved or put harm to her loyal beloved ones. ❤ 😂

I supposed that it fitted in the storyline, but it was not well executed in the show. Like Little Fiber's in Game Of Thrones it was a disappointing way for her to go. She could have been killed or given up her life to by someone else, but Lagherta?.

Lagertha brought this War to their homeland. As a matter of fact none of them cared about Ragnar's legacy when he came back. No one but Ivar. He was the only one who defended and stuck by his side. The rest of these people spit on Ragnar's legacy before he died. They basically buried Ragnar alive before anyone literally killed him. "Fact!"
