According to the book Hetmskringla , history of the kings of Norway , In real life Halfdane was actually the father of King Harold Finehair . The writer of this show has taken people that lived in different times and put them all together so he could write the show . Some are accurate , some are not .
That's been the running theme for the whole series. For example, Lagertha was Ragnar's first wife from Gesta Danerum(whom he divorced) and Völsunga saga made no mentions of her at all, instead mentioning that his wife was Thora Town-hart. Series cuts out Thora and divides some of her character attributes between Lagertha and Aslaug. Actually, whole Lagertha-Ragnar-Aslaug plot line in the series comes off as a version of saga of Sigurd and Brynhild(Aslaug's parents), with some role reversal. While that Saga had true lovers Sigurd and Brynhild dying, Lagertha that has been designated as Ragnar's true love takes the role of Gudrun by outliving the two.

0:59 It's a shame he didn't expand more here - with Bjorn he's much more calm and collected, he is his own man. Comparatively in the presence of his brother he was a sadistic murderer. Remember of course that Harald still owed Halfdan after being saved from the Earl's wife.
Michael Hirst sure loves the whole "brother against brother, friend against friend" shtick. He's been doing it nonstop since season 1, with Ragnar and Rollo. And you'll actually have people believing this trash being historic fact. In season 1 there was room for friendship, genuine love, cameraderie, family and the adventurous nature of being a viking. What looked like a genuine attempt for exploring scandinavian culture in the 9th century compacted in a showformat turned into a Hollywood sex, drugs & butchery-flick.
"Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever."
AllOutOfRevives he wanted to die by his brothers hand. No one else. He wanted to die because he wasn't going to be able to live after betraying his brother.

He wanted to die, his time was up. He walked up to his brother, he could have stabbed him in the back. He accepted his faith for choosing the losing side, but had no regrets. Truly admirable.
I would've loved to seen a fight too but it makes it worst for King Harold. He lost his brother, wife of his dreams (his words) and his unborn child all at once. He will be so devastated, especially if he never finds out Astrid was still loyal to Lagertha. I can imagine him going full savage like Ivar is.
Wtf.. so many people crying and hating the show because they have killed halfdan and there wasnt a fight between brothers... this was so intense and so much better than a simple battle. Please if you dont like the show dont watch it but i think it is far more realistic than a lot of tv shows
Not this Halfdan, the Halfdan of the series is based on Halfdan Gudrodsson (also called Halfdan the Black) who was the father of Harald Fairhair historically. Halfdan Ragnarsson that was one of Lothbrok's sons, in the series Hvitserk is equivalent to him since possibly they were the same person in real life (Hvitserk means "White Shirt", probably Hvitserk was just a nickname of Halfdan Ragnarsson)
So, when rewatching the show, something stood out to me. Halfdan could have fought other warriors here. He has these hallucinations about the desert that bring him to his knees at one point. I think he knew that he was going to die in this battle. He believed it was fated. The visions took him back to that place which allowed him to "live life with the most intensity, feeling each moment." He knew his journey was over. "Perhaps the gods have already decided the outcome of this battle." He said that when Bjorn, Ubbe, Lagertha, and Heahmund were going over battle plans, and everyone got quiet and didn't say anything. They just looked troubled by Halfdan's words. I believe Halfdan interpreted a vision before the battle to mean that he was going to fall. He has more visions during the fight which confirmed his belief. He was never afraid to die. He didn't want to die without dignity. If he was to die, he wanted his brother to swing the sword. He hears Harald fighting nearby. That's why Halfdan stops, turns to his brother's voice, and just walks up to him and stands there. He doesn't fight him. He just waits. Halfdan wanted Harald to kill him because the gods decided Halfdan had lived life with the most intensity that it had to offer him. It was time to go to Valhalla. Notice how throughout the battles for Kattegat people died in many gruesome ways. The way Harald kills Halfdan leaves some time for final words, "This is life, and this is death, brother," but the killing blow minimizes suffering and does not desecrate Halfdan's body. He isn't burned alive. His body isn't bludgeoned or disfigured. He dies in his brother's arms. Harald does not understand until his own death what all of this means. He does not understand why Halfdan chose to fight with Bjorn. It wasn't because Halfdan hated Harald. It was because Halfdan loved Bjorn. He did not want Bjorn to die. To Halfdan, loyalty matters above everything. If Harald had been fighting against Ivar with Bjorn, Halfdan would have still fought on Bjorn's side. To Harald, being King of Norway mattered more than anything. That is why when Bjorn attacks Kattegat to reclaim it, Harald joins him. Conquering Kattegat is the key to becoming King of Norway. It does not matter to Harald who is occupying the throne during the battle. Harald felt guilty for the rest of his life after this fight. He holds back tears in the final season while talking to Ivar, "But I killed my brother. I killed Halfdan. Do you think he would come to visit me?" And when Harald is bleeding to death in an English forest, Halfdan does come to visit Harald. Halfdan never hated Harald. This is what Harald did not understand. Harald was never alone. Halfdan was always with him.
I ve'had and i 'm still having an unlucky life. Halfdan is great part of my life. I love him. And he is a reason for me to stay alive and love life. I love you, brother !
Hafdan is ideal king he has self esteem and always supporting whats he thinks needs to be help, not just like the other characters who always to conquer and greedy in power.
How nice of them to be so inclusive and incorporate so many women into the battles even though that's the opposite of what actually happened in history. They should have cast an Alaskan Inuit to play Ragnar though. There are not enough Alaskan Inuits in Viking shows.
Weirdest? Might just be one of the best ones in the entire show. The music, the scenes, everything was just so well executed. Perhaps the greatest battle in the entire show, except for the one with King Aelle, which wasn't even shown, but then again there was no need, the music and the build-up was just enough.
Nah halfdan fucked up by going with bjorn rather than his brother. I feel for harald only because harald needed his brother in that important time yet his bother chooses some else over his own blood.
Carlosdsquirrel1 Björn saved Halfdan’s life...hard decision but would you side with the one who saved you or would you ask your brother where he was when he was in danger? 🤔
Always loved this idea, just asked AI to summarize it. Ragnar Lothbrok and Halfdan the Black: Known for their explorative and adventurous spirits, these figures are often depicted in legends and sagas as great travelers and warriors. Ragnar, in particular, is renowned for his raids and explorations across various lands, including England and France. Halfdan, while more focused on expanding his territories, was also involved in significant travels and conquests. Rollo and Harold Fairhair: Their ambitions were more aligned with consolidating power and establishing a lasting legacy. Rollo, after his initial raids, settled in Normandy, where he established his rule and converted to Christianity, securing a significant power base. Harold Fairhair, on the other hand, was dedicated to unifying Norway under his rule, focusing on political and military strategies to maintain control and authority. So, while Ragnar and Halfdan were more about exploration and adventure, Rollo and Harold were focused on political power and stability. These contrasting motivations highlight the diverse nature of Viking pursuits and ambitions. Actually have to love the ideals of they were in many ways similar, where 1 brother triumphed vs the other in their endeavors.
Halvdan was one of my fav characters. It wasnt necessary to kill him productor! Also if you dont know Halvdan Svarte is father of Harald Harfager in real life.
Yeah its realistic thay many great vikings died during battle and this show just shows that very welll. Then again im sure we all wanted to see more of Björns and Halfdans bromance and travels in Africa. Great character who fell too soon.
you can hear in the background Einar Selvik singing my mother told me which maeks it sad, i can't find anywhere the version where Einar sings it though in norse, anyone got a link?
He had to kill him, as a good brother he wants only the best for him so he can get a really really good pay check that’s better than the 3 seasons of this show
it's almost like the sand falling from his hand resembled an hourglass, the amount of time he had left to live. does anyone else think the same? anyway I absolutely loved Halfdan
I like your way of thinking. After all, there's at least one intelligent person here that doesn't complain how the story has gone and instead of this accepts it and tries to start a discussion surrounding the topic. His death broke me absolutely to be honest. I don't even know why, besides the fact that his character development was almost perfect in this season.
Did it ever occur to Harald that he could turn around and fight someone else? Halfdan wasn't ambitious at all or interested in Kattegat or becoming king. He wasn't his rival.
I think this death was a missed opportunity... Just imagine if the two brothers were actually in fighting and Halfdan wasn't just standing there while Harald struck, like Rollo and Ragnar in Paris
CakeSquid the two brothers fighting would have ruined Halfdans character. He never hated his brother, he just wanted to forge his own destiny. Halfdan didn’t even betray Harald, he just chose a different path. IMO Halfdans death was the perfect ending to an amazing and dramatic character. He stayed loyal to Bjorn and Harald till the end.

He will be so devastated, especially if he never finds out Astrid was still loyal to Lagertha. I can imagine him going full savage like Ivar is.
Deadone possible
One of the best dialogues I have heard in the entire series 'This is life and the this is death, brother'.
My mother told me, one day I would buy, a galley with good oars, sail to distant shores...
They had to kill so many because Rollos return brings new people. It would be to much for the show to handle otherwise.
The way he crashed into the desert along with his memories... Fkin cried...
I always felt like Halfdan would of won a fight against his brother
Wtf.. so many people crying and hating the show because they have killed halfdan and there wasnt a fight between brothers... this was so intense and so much better than a simple battle. Please if you dont like the show dont watch it but i think it is far more realistic than a lot of tv shows
True. But it was a mistake to kill Halfdan at that time .. believe me
This show was amazing but this last episode looks like it was made by the same people who are ruining the walking dead.
Haha
ahahha golden comment - couldnt be more truthful
Was thinking the same thing
x00p3 really . Yes
I don t hope vikings turn to this
I almost cry... that was so sad-
Alejandro Vivas can we hit 50 likes
I wished to see him and Bjorn to keep on exploring new lands. Their new brotherhood should have lasted longer.
Vikings show is a Journey from binging to end of a life story and you feel it many times in this series I love the show most👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Ladies, if you're not sure if your man can cry or not, show him this clip. That outta get it going
This is life and this is death brother... heart beat and music ar flawless for this scene
Funny thing is that Halfdan was probably in real life ragnars son
"this is life ...and this is death" the most fast speed is the thoughts
I can’t. My heart, it’s breaking!!
I ve'had and i 'm still having an unlucky life. Halfdan is great part of my life. I love him. And he is a reason for me to stay alive and love life. I love you, brother !
If i could see Jasper Pääkkonen in real life :/ !!!
I love you Halfdan ! I love you and hope you are in paradise
when you do something and regret it 1 second after
Hafdan is ideal king he has self esteem and always supporting whats he thinks needs to be help, not just like the other characters who always to conquer and greedy in power.
How nice of them to be so inclusive and incorporate so many women into the battles even though that's the opposite of what actually happened in history. They should have cast an Alaskan Inuit to play Ragnar though. There are not enough Alaskan Inuits in Viking shows.
Wierdest episode ever
I think it was really good tbh.
Did you know in real life halfdan is haralds father? They're not even brothers. He also had black hair. Halfdan the black is his name.
Now just imagine if these episodes were released in movie theaters.🔥
This episode showed lovers, friends, and family can turn on you at any moment and you have to make a decision.
“I killed my brother and i regret it every single day of my life”
- Harald, years later
So pissed that they killed Halfdan, every bit of whom was unique
3:15 name of this soundtrack?
"This is life. And this is death, brother"
this is the best episode ever!
Me and my brother. We are close as hell then it changed. I'm halfdan. We used to talk everyday now I never hear anything.
Someone know where I can find the my mother told me version from the end of this video, the sad version??
I still don’t understand why he has to die. But when he dies this is the right way to duet.
All Harald had to do was walk away. It's weakness that he wasn't able to.
At least he went from being Halfdan to Wholedan after doing what he wanted in life
Halfdan just means half Dane meaning that he was half Dane half norwegian
@@Soaring_Raven212 I know I was just joking lol
And he saw him in Valhalla.🙂
Halvdan was one of my fav characters. It wasnt necessary to kill him productor! Also if you dont know Halvdan Svarte is father of Harald Harfager in real life.
He became my favourite character this season. Such a shame to see him go.
Yeah its realistic thay many great vikings died during battle and this show just shows that very welll. Then again im sure we all wanted to see more of Björns and Halfdans bromance and travels in Africa. Great character who fell too soon.
He just looked like a fucking G. Even amongst vikings.
At least he didn't get stung by a bee.
King Harald ended up being a powerful ruler in real life although he couldn't stay away from a fight and later got killed for it
You mean Harald Hardrada, Harald fairhair lived till. old age more then likely
I wish I knew the name of the music playing during his death
you can hear in the background Einar Selvik singing my mother told me which maeks it sad, i can't find anywhere the version where Einar sings it though in norse, anyone got a link?
He had to kill him, as a good brother he wants only the best for him so he can get a really really good pay check that’s better than the 3 seasons of this show
He was only 42 years old in season 5 could live much longer
"I dont want to kill you Brother!"
2 sec later....
*Kills his brother*
I didn’t want*
@@JarlMaximus Aye captain grammar-nazi
Is it part of the character or it's just his natural breathing is different from the other
it's almost like the sand falling from his hand resembled an hourglass, the amount of time he had left to live. does anyone else think the same? anyway I absolutely loved Halfdan
I was glad to see halfden come to take his brother kingHarald to Valhalla
Did it ever occur to Harald that he could turn around and fight someone else? Halfdan wasn't ambitious at all or interested in Kattegat or becoming king. He wasn't his rival.
*I find it weird that Halfdan is Harald’s brother in the series, when he actually was his father according to history*
I love the play on Vikings want.
Glory: For Valhalla, for Glory, For Gold, women and mead.
For Exploration: To adventure and discover.
The panic at 2.20 always gets me
I think this death was a missed opportunity...
1:50 Halfdan is in Helheim.
If they are going to follow the sagas somewhat, this is a terrible forshadowing of what Harald's son wil do to his brothers.
