And NATO agreed not to spread further eastwards after German reunification and the collapse of the Soviet Union. They continued to move east. Poland, the Balkans, and the Baltics. Then, they moved for Ukraine and Russia finally responded, after Ukraine had been bombing and shelling pro Russian separatists in the east for years. Let's say this happened the other way around. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia recovered and started pushing westward, bringing the former Soviet states back under their control. Then, a pro American rebel group appeared in, say, Poland, and Russia started bombing the shit out of their civilians. NATO would get involved immediately. In fact, they would likely start another world war over that

Also, a question to you - how would you feel if your neighbor came to your country, taken its part, started a war in other part, and demanded you to change your constitution under the threat of killing you? If Ukraine wanted peace they would end their civillian bombing in Donbass a long time ago. Russia negotiated with them time and time again but it never happened. This war is happening because Ukraine had to be stopped and it continues because their leadership doesn't care for the lives of their military and civillians caught in the crossfire. Ask anyone in the know and they'll tell you: Many people insisted on Russian involvement as early as 2014 but instead Donetsk and Lugansk received humanitarian relief both by the government and volunteer nonprofits founded by people that care.
