Ukraine Unleashed: Green Light to Strike Military Targets Throughout Russia With Western Weapons

The United States just gave Ukraine permission to begin using US-provided weapons to strike military targets across Russia. This was previously restricted to just the area in and around Kharkiv but has been expanded to include anything involved with attacking Ukraine. This will lead to a significant shift in how the war is currently playing out.

I'd say they care more about ukraine than they did Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam or Korea as they had tighter ROE in each of those conflicts than they do now in Ukraine. In Afghanistan by the end of the war they couldn't drop bombs anywhere within a grid of a building. That's what anywhere withing 1 to 2 km of a building even if your being shot at from said building. Iraq I believe is the same. Not to mention the perpetuated "no wmds" lie after over 1000 usa soldiers are suffering long term effects of exposure to these chemical weapons (which are classified as wmds) vietnam they couldn't bomb air bases because there might be russians there. Korea was the same.

Opening up the Kharkiv front resulted in this change in NATO policy that eliminates the safe areas inside of Russia. Getting North Korean help seems poised to get South Korea to begin providing military aid to Kyiv. Launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine altered preferences in Finland and Sweden, causing the growth of NATO towards Russia. Using attacks against the civilian population of Ukraine to cow them into submission made them more determined to fight on and made it politically inconvenient in European capitals to oppose aiding Ukraine to get cheap oil/gas from Moscow.

It’s not just him, there was likely a lot of discussion with our allies about this move.
Since the war began,US Germany UK France Poland Italy ect had to agree with each other about how we’d go about doing this. Poland was the only hawkish state at the onset of the war. If we gave the green light to hit Russia with our shit two years ago,UK France Germany might have gotten uneasy and held off on support or worse criticized our decision and disavowed it for fear of retaliation from Putin.
State Department probably had to do overtime talking with their friendly counterparts to convince them this is a good idea and to support it.
NATO means we come to the defense of one another, but it’s less thought of mechanism is we also try to keep members from doing anything too rash or dangerous and in turn convincing them why it’s not. Lot of time gets lost there

It's far more efficient and successful to get those things before they are airborne or coming across the ground border.
Acting as a coalition does have some benefits but so does being a leader. I do admit that it's not black and white. A coalition that does nothing is useless but a leader that goes rogue and offends the rest of the coalition is also not completely helpful, especially in this case because it should be primarily a European concern.

It can be described as an attack from the west or from NATO. The way NATO has its article-5, the same Russia has its own. If any NATO missile hits Russia it can be responded to by Nuclear weapons. Ukraine is just putting itself in danger. If the west really wanted to help Ukraine to win this war they could simply send their force or include Ukraine in NATO. Ukraine has been fighting with all they have since day one. We cover Ukraine’s failures and our failures by pushing this narrative that we intentionally held them back. That doesn’t make any sense….because it’s not true. When they ran out of weapons the first time, then the second time, it was because Russia destroyed all of it and we simply couldn’t keep up with production. Ukraine has traded a significant number of lives in order to hold on while production caught up. What happens when the]is current round of equipment and ammunition is eaten up and the manpower situation becomes completely untenable? I only see two options, negotiations or WWIII. honestly a fortress Europe policy from the EU/NATO is the ideal outcome for the US. it allows the US to focus more on the rising threat in southeast Asia and curtailing Chinese threats. should things kick off the US might be needed more there than it will be in Europe.
Japan and South Korea both are nothing to scoff at militarily but without US support they would be in no position to handle the heavily militarized Chinese and North Korean threats on their own. Australia can offer support in that region and to a degree the Philippines can be counted on for at the very least some operating bases and maybe a bit of infantry if things do go hot.
at least Navy wise and Air power wise as well Japan and South Korea can keep China in check long enough for more US assets to move into the area.

The T62 had a different caliber gun (115mm I think) than the T72/80/90. Perhaps the 115 rounds are scarce? Is that why they dont even leave an option to use the gun and this is only useful as a motor carriage?

US military has been using Metric for most things for a while now, really we only still measure our bombs by pounds rather than Kilograms because we don't want to upend our manufacturing to change some measurements.

These glide bombs are not difficult targets. They are not stealthy. They are relatively slow. Even air defense artillery can down them. The problem is they are inexpensive and very numerous.
