Finally we're able to see the details of one of these. This one is built on top of an old T-62 tank that is essentially just a troop carrier now. The barrel isn't able to traverse and there was no ammunition in the tank itself. The ERA blocks were empty, sheet metal on the sides offers limited protection but the focus seems to be countering drones. There were a handful of electronic countermeasures layered on top, however those didn't stop the Ukrainian drone from disabling the vehicle. Not clear why this type of modified troop carrier is needed. It offers less protection and less firepower than a traditional APC or IFV.

It is added protection from drones, no matter how silly it looks. It just makes it harder to get good hits with drones and the Ukrainians have been using more drones to stop them than the naked tanks, at least in all the footage I've seen so far. There are a couple of instances where the Ukrs have hit the box with a pretty big bb on a drone and then flown a couple of fpvs through the hole. Also, the drones jammers are working, just not well enough. If you watch the fpv footage, they're all losing signal as they approach the tanks but it's not affecting them far enough away from the tank to stop them all from hitting them any way.

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

Before jammers the FPVs lost signal too. That's just the ground clutter causing signal loss.
Signal is generally line of sight, with diffraction helping gain a little more range. But once you're close to the ground you lose signal.
You can tell it's not jamming when they dive, lose signal, bring the drone up to take another look and then dive again. The wavelength for the controls is still able to reach while the video feed can't. A jammer would lock the controls.

I haven't thought of any other reason for Turtle tanks except that somewhat simple soldiers need to be lured to the front line somehow. The best way to do this is by convincing them that they have a safe, improved tank that is strongly protected against drone strikes. The cope cage is not intended to protect against drones but to prevent the crew from noticing threats that would make them turn back. It really lives up to its name, cope cage. It gives a false confidence that the crew has any chance of survival. In practice, such an outdated T62 tank might at best clear one anti-tank mine. The crew is sent on a one-way mission.

"Hard to understand the purpose" - When you look at it from a western point of view, you are totally correct.
But this battefield is so different because both sides simply lack many capabilities.
We have btw. seen this tank style in videos from the russians and basically the swiss cheese style steel plates were visible even there - so no surprise there.
1.) "why no ammo in tank" - because this makes it actually survivable otherwise the turret pops off the new born angels
2.) I guess the russians actually intended those vehicles in the role we saw in the first instances, equiped with a mine roller as a leading/break-through tank, shielding the other vehicles behind it, and a ammo carrier waiting in the back - but the battlefield changed so that never happend.
But even here the drone hit the tank track, but still the smaller FPV drones equiped with RPG-7 hollow charges will have a very high failiure rate against this tank,
so this tank is a russian adaption to the battlefield - and if the battlefield hadn't changed - it might have played out. (I'm very glad it changed and did not play out)
3.) "Why not equip IFV and APC" - more detailed answer,
    - Russia has wasted too many but tanks are getting towed out of taiga coldwar storage and their repair has the highest priority
    - the armor is basically laughable and the ukrainians have with the Bradley a very very powerful hunter for these,
only a russian tank has a chance to survive an encounter with a Bradley, a BMP-1 or 2 will be turned into swiss cheese, not starting even with BTR there are some very intersting pictures where the armor basically looks like those steel plates
Btw. "seems strange" - we have a war where one side uses dirt bikes to mount attacks and gains ground by burning through soldier wearing down the ammo of the other side.

The odd thing is, if they really meant this as an infantry carrier, they kept a non-functional turret. Remove the turret and there's extra space under the cage AND the remaining vehicle weighs a lot less. There's precedent - some Canadian Rams were used without turrets as infantry carriers - called "Kangaroos" in Commonwealth service.

The best possible explanation i've been able to come up with is that Russia is practically out of APCs.
With an estimated 10,000-14,000 APC losses they are down to the most barebones stuff... and they have more of the older useless T-55's and T-62's than they have BMP-1, BMP-2 and BMP-3 vehicles.
That is why Russia keeps getting more and more desperate to saber rattle and "offer peace terms".
Their military will literally be an infantry army if the war continues.

Even older tanks can be used as stationary rear guard, so the fact that it's a 1960's tanks doesn't mean it's not useful. What it might mean, in an optimistic perspective, is that either Russia can't really supply ammunition to all its tanks, or it can't maintain all of them enough to be able to fire. @Preston Stewart Russians installed it on a tank to make it more survivable against rocket launchers. The spaced armor causes premature detonation of an rocket. Some blast will make it through. A tank's armor is thick enough to withstand that blast while an armored carrier does not.

The Swedish PBV 301 which was something in between an IFV and APC was built on old Strv m/41 Chassis and was a stopgap until PBV302 was finished.
You could say this is a very crude version of the same idea.
Another reason why the rather use old MBT's over IFV's or APC'S is that many russian Transports are filled with fueltanks known to not be able to handle hits and the risk of the passengers to be barbecued is high.

It's less of a death trap than a regular tank is. It offers superior heat protection and drone protection, especially with the EW equipment it has fitted under the cage. Just because it looks silly does not mean it doesn't serve a purpose in their current environments.

Nobody is “coping” this, and no it doesn’t offer “supper protection” there’s multiple videos that prove that notion completely false(if the giant hole and multiple shrapnel entry holes from a $500 drone wasn’t evidence enough). How do I put this, its war, some battle results or what they use are not to be used as facts to say the conditions of one army, in fact, the more freedom of creativity means they have more space and time, than their opponents.
If the 2nd biggest manufacturer that supported over 30+ countries that even won against US if they support them, how on earth can you actually believe they have no ammunition? One hit at a nearby logistic route, the brigade in front ran out of ammunition, now all of them have no ammunition? And yet the FABs numbers increased, the hypersonic not only used, but also given to ships.
About the older models, they were used from day 1 of the special operation, may I ask, why on earth you, and I mean you, want to keep the older relics collecting rust in storage instead of using them? It's a waste of space, management and if the newer models were destroyed, then what the heck makes you think the older models would change anything? But instead, we got the "lol Russians are out of tanks". One guy in anothe video commented it was based on satellite images, and I was like wow, so those kept in open somehow ended up representing their tanks?
I find it so weird, that, the main media has been proven full of shit, literally how can you believe the main media after all this time? It means you are a Biden supporter and Israel supporter too. That's the main media sides.

But you don't use old pieces of junk as front line armor because it gets blown up really easily - an original T60 could not compete vs a Bradley, let alone modern tanks - wasting man power and logistics. You'd only use relic pieces like this when you've ran out of the good stuff, or, your unit never got any in the first place and an old T60 is better than nothing.

They used it since day 1, there are no debating this. Majority of T72s were at the front lines, and lower models were spread out, so we know they didn't use T90s as their main battle tanks. Yes they can't, they are garbage unfit for frontline, but they weren't fighting Bradley's or Abrams or Leopards in the beginning were they? For the love of God, use the time line and events that occurred in the war. Not the statistics of each unit, the Russians don't operate as we think. Heck just some stingers and terrorists cells made them abandon Afghanistan altogether. Are the stingers working now? Their SU25 still flying. So even the stats we have are garbage, sorry but the all mighty Javelins didn't hit most of their targets but they worked wonders in Iraq, what we have, are old stats. Did the Bradley's got destroyed by the T60s? No, but the one supporting behind the T60s did, they are still armored vehicles capable of providing cover than running in naked.
