I think Amanda Ripley's timeline in Alien: Isolation is an important part of the story. It would have taken place in 2137 or 2138, fifteen years after Ellen Ripley disappeared. That was an amazing game that adapted the original movie sets, characters, environment, and Weyland-Yutani fuckery (including terrifying synthetics) perfectly to a video game experience. They used some original sound files from Alien (1979) that 20th Century Fox had saved and lent to the development team. The AI used for the Xenomorph was unlike anything I'd seen from a video game previous, especially on "nightmare" mode. Anyway, Alien: Isolation is definitely canon in my book and should have been included.
Jayu Lawliet Exactly, unfortunately faster doesn't always mean better. The xenomorph in Alien: Covenant wasn't all that impressive compared to the original. Maybe it's because the original was a suit and the lighting of Alien.

so how on Earth the predators built a hunting temple in Earth's timeline's past to play with the Aliens, if there were not Aliens until David the killer synthetic created them?!
Laura Christine because ridley Scott has butchered the whole timeline and he has made a robot the creator of alien , Because I think it was easier than completing the connection to all the movies
Maybe they knew the Engineers would one day bring those monsters to Earth. It might be something the Engineers did on other worlds as well and they just followed the pattern. Predators may already be familiar with the Aliens from those other worlds which may explain the temple statues. Maybe all what David did was recreated an almost exact species that once existed. That or Predator movies are non-cannon in general.
NapoleonBonaparte I like to think they do....the whole thing just sounds cooler to me ....but the whole Prometheus delima sounds good also I guess...minus it's blatant shortcomings
Awesome. That helped me figure out the time line of the franchise, because I was confused. So; Alien Resurrection takes place 286 years after the events of Prometheus. Thanks!
This is my favorite movie series but its timeline is a bit confusing. By the way, the next movie "Alien: Awakening" (2018) will take place between "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant"

Actually they did evolve and they evolved so that they could no longer reproduce. The whole point of Prometheus was because they took the blood of their "lord" and used it to create new life on worlds. The black goo is the failed experiment of trying to replicate this original and literal blood of their "lord". They then decided to weaponize it.

And no way it happened four BILLION years ago. Engineers would either be long extinct or be WAYYYYY more advanced than we could possibly imagine if they continued to learn and evolve for four BILLION years.
@Early Cuyler Relax kid. As someone from hispanic descent, and as someone who understands the struggles that those people (typically from central/south America) go through with communist countries, corrupt leaders and frequent drug busts, I tell you with all certainty that illegals are not filth. Yes, some come over to start nothing but trouble. But some just come looking to escape a dark past and give their family a fresh start, and can't do that because of this country's grueling policies and procedures, or the denial of their visa. It's not fair to group them like that, and i think those that come here not looking for trouble deserve to stay here. If we start shutting down other cultures trying to get into the country, what the hell are we called the "melting pot" for? Also, i ask you, where did your ancestors come from. Unless you are native american, your ancestors did not come here "legally", or just for fun. Even the colonists who came here came in search of a new life and a fresh start.
I watched this hoping it was going to explain how come the engineer's ship crashed on LV426 after what we are led to believe as the pilot being killed by an alien. when Kane and the crew find it they find the alien eggs in what is described as the cargo hold and there is the lighted layer above the eggs. this gives the impression that they were cargo of the ship. the dead pilot was described as fossilised which is saying that it could have been there for thousands of years before the nostrmo found it. my questions are, if David engineered the alien in covenant, how do they get back in time and how do the engineers end up cultivating the eggs? also in AVP it is explained that the aliens have been 'farmed' on earth for centuries which also is before David created them.
Because the xenomorph David created in covenant wasn't the origin, the mural in Prometheus tells us they were already around by then. David tried to recreate the original, but wasn't 100% successful, as his was sleeker, more aggressive, and had a sightly different lifecycle, emerging already bipedal.
the engineers evolved so much they could get 300000 years old, but they couldn't reproduce anymore. In order to continue the species they tried to spread their dna on other worlds but all attempts failed until one of the engineers got bitten by an octupus like creature which implanted an alien. That alien then burst out of the engineer and they called it the deacon(similar to the end of prometheus) this deacon is portrayed in the room with all the jars in prometheus. If an engineer drinks the blood of this deacon spreading DNA was succesful(intro scene of prometheus) but after a while they started running out of blood so they tried creating their own version. The result is the black goo in prometheus. Using this black goo was not succesful for spreading DNA but the engineers used it to create aliens, let those aliens lose on inhabitat planets and then with their superior technology they killed the aliens after they wiped out the world so they could take all the resources on those planets. The engineers created humans and always watched our species evolve, because of all the wars humans fought they took a person to paradise to show how humans should behave (this is jesus christ). But ofcourse we crucified jesus, because of this the engineers wanted to wipe out humanity.
the plots to these movies really are not very good compared to how popular they are if you think about it. Crew gets infected, havoc ensues, crew never gets totally uninfected, repeat. The Engineers and their history and what they are up to really should be the main plot of these movies not just aliens bursting out of people's bodies.
The simplistic way of the first movie really makes me think that one single alien in a closed place was better than a messy situation with a lot of aliens.
The fact that alien 3 killed off hicks and newt always made the ending of aliens sad to me , knowing they actually dont make it even after they lived. Aliens is still my favorite movie ever but the ending played different than it was intended to because this !
The second one in Alien: Covenent is a Protomorph, not a Xenomorph. It's the closest to a Xenomorph of every other variation we've seen before but there's still noticeable differences in behavior and anatomy.
Yeah, it doesn't seem complicated at all: Prometheus, Alien Covenant, Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 & Alien Resurrection. Pretty straightforward, Star Wars Legends is a more complicated timeline. The Han Solo Adventures, The Lando Calrissian Adventures & The Han Solo Trilogy could be read in chronological order by putting down AC Crispin and picking up L Neil Smith. Put down L Neil Smith and read more AC Crispin. Do that again. Now do the same thing with AC Crispin & Brian Daley. Ever read an entire book in the middle of another book's chapter? Now imagine a movie where you stop one and watch another set in the same universe, that would be a complicated timeline (like the prologue to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with River Phoenix in between The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones with Corey Carrier & The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones with Sean Patrick Flannery, but then you may just put Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom before Raiders of the Lost Ark)
Scared of toasters Well in Alien set in the Earth calendar year 2122 the derelict and Space Jockey have been there so long the 'pilot/space jockey' has become fossilised. This on LV-426 with its very 'primordial' atmosphere would take a long time to calcify and fossilise, in fact taking many thousands of years. The ovomorphs (eggs) stayed there all that time. The Jockey fell victim to a facehugger and gave birth to an alien. Yet Covenant is set 18 years before the film Alien and now they're saying David is creating the Alien. So if he does, he's 'recreating' something that must have existed before. As on LV-426 there is a derelict juggernaut that crashed and contains thousands of eggs ("Kane said he saw thousands of eggs." (Aliens)) that's been sitting there a very long time. I'd have thought any semi casual follower of the franchise would balk at the 'revelation' in Covenant - a revelation that came off screen in an interview with the director. Forgive my being highhanded, but cinema is not yet a multi-media experience. You shouldn't have to watch or read or in this case listen to an interview with the director of a film telling you about vital plot points. That's a pretty major failing of the director of film makers if they spend the press junket telling you something. They should have put it into the film. That's not spoon feeding the audience, that's depriving them of vital story and character.
I kinda like the direction of story the last 2 movies went. They give more depth to the aliens en gives us this philosophical idea of life creation. Compared to that the older movies are more just simple action movies with a lot of shooting and killing without a lot of in depth story.
I think you are blind because on the start of the movie Prometeus you can clearly see grass when he disintigrates. Also you can also see that DNA is indentical to human DNA (which is really big flaw it can only partialy match and one dna alone in the water would mutate and result in something compleatly diferent but ok...) meaning they were just basis for humanoid species not all life.
The Deacon is basically a Xenomorph because when David tested the black goo it created the first of his own Genetically Superior branch of Xenomorph's. David is creating Xenomorph's because after looking at carving and drawings of Normal Xenomorph's in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant he found they already exist, but he is making his own and he's making them better than how nature crafted them. In this branch the Deacon was the first one, which would be followed by the Neomorph and Protomorph in Alien: Covenant with each member evolving more and more to the appearance of the Original Xenomorph Drone in Alien. So in conclusion the Deacon was David's first Xenomorph and it was not his last.
Prometheus was awesome, but Covenant was horrible :( characters empty and totally forgettable except for David. No one will give 2 cents about this movie in a year.
Harleigh19, the experts here for that movie seem to extend past the one I saw. All I remember is that ship rolling over everyone and that was that. Was there a Prometheus Redux released?
it doesnt make sense in the timeline b/c if in the newest aliens movie it shows that that was the first xenomorph created then they show up like 90+ years before that dont make no sense
EDIT in the Novels apparently David was attempting to recreate the Xenomorph through DNA manipulation yadda yadda and that the Engineers did create them long before. In the movie's director commentary they say they decided to leave that out and maybe have David be the sole creator. So convoluted.
@NC Quadraxis : three books and two movies might have something different to say about that... especially after explicitly mentioning "Weyland" and "Yutani"
james camerons Aliens has a gap in the movie which could be made into a movie, the gap is when nutes parents come back to the buggy after visiting the Alien spacecraft and nute sees the xenomorph attached to her fathers face she screams then the film jumps to the marines arriving with ripley, james cameron could easily make a spin of movie to show what happens after nutes parents go back to the colony interesting theory i think..
For sure. It would be cool if everything that happened explained (to a tee!) how things got the way they were when Ripley's team arrives. Pretty tragic though when you know the ending.

There is alot of missing, because Covenant ended up on a cliffhanger, so either you should wait for the new alien to come out, or watch it from 1st one (1979) up to Covenant, Prometheus and Covenant are prequels basically

So...Covenant comes before Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo?
Great Video,...FINALLY !!!! someone was able to piece these sequels together, if left up to me I'd be totally confused. Great work in bringing this to our attention.
Who agrees that the 1st alien and the 2nd alien was the best!
YES! But I love the AVP but it never happened.
2093 Weyland Corporation launches mission to outer space, multi million dollar ship explodes all crew dead. 2104 Weyland Yutani multi Billion Dollar colony ship to distant planet, all crew dead fate of colonists unknown, 2122 Weyland Yutani corporation lose mining ship all crew dead, 1 survivor discovered over 50 years later. 2179 Weyland Yutani colony destroyed over 300 casualties. Rescue mission failure all crew dead survivors crash land into prison eventually killing all crew members. Can someone please explain how this company makes money?
International Art Projects theres always money in war.. they want to weaponize the xeno.
obviously they have some ties to military. don't believe me. ask hicks and the crew if it's another bug hunt. 😏
International Art Projects "Building better worlds"
International Art Projects Don't work for Weyland Corporation.
we only know about the failures. Presumably they have plenty of successes. A big company can afford failures.
bug hunt... im dead lol
Only _Alien_ and _Aliens_ actually happened. Everything else was a very bad dream.
That's how I think of it.
I actually like Prometheus, my opinion, is like the most interesting for me.
I liked Alien Isolation
Whats so wrong with alien 3?
Oh man you are so right!
so how on Earth the predators built a hunting temple in Earth's timeline's past to play with the Aliens, if there were not Aliens until David the killer synthetic created them?!
I dont believe that the AVP movies are cannon
indeed they aren't
NapoleonBonaparte I like to think they do....the whole thing just sounds cooler to me ....but the whole Prometheus delima sounds good also I guess...minus it's blatant shortcomings
Awesome. That helped me figure out the time line of the franchise, because I was confused. So; Alien Resurrection takes place 286 years after the events of Prometheus. Thanks!
"It's game over, man. *Game over* !"
This is my favorite movie series but its timeline is a bit confusing. By the way, the next movie "Alien: Awakening" (2018) will take place between "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant"
OH FFS.... I'm trying to remember a single good "prequel" to any series..
Sudden Kancho Better Call Saul
Sudden Kancho The first Hobbit, Revenge of the Sith and the 30min part in godfather 2.
Is Fantastic beasts technically a hp prequel? if yes its another good prequel.
Ice Cream -- not a prequel. Offshoot, set at an earlier time.
Jo$h -- Hobbit hobbled along. Not on par with the rest. Revenge of the Sith? For real? I'd go for "Rogue One" if anything...
In short -- if prequel can be any good than it should be released first. It's a tragedy to have a good story told retroactively.
The reason Ridley made it so complicated is because when you put it in the right sequence it's the stupidest story you can ever imagine
Wayland died in prometheus but he's alive in alien3 doesn't makes sense.
@@udaykumardas1617 maybe he was a clone or maybe he wasn't weyland and he was just the creator of bishop after all in the credits they call him bishop 2
Uday Das there are two wetlands, one is the father and the other is the son, the father died in Prometheus, and the son continues wetland industries, hyper sleep kept the current wetlands young age
@@unoriginal8324 It's 'Weyland'
Duncan Garnett oof sorry I do t know why that happened, I meant weyland. Must have been autocorrect.
How Come the Engineers never EVOLVED in 4 billion years
lmao
Because they were going extinct and only one survived, the one from Prometheus
they evolved to a point to where they can manipulate their environment so they no longer need to adapt to it?
Actually they did evolve and they evolved so that they could no longer reproduce. The whole point of Prometheus was because they took the blood of their "lord" and used it to create new life on worlds. The black goo is the failed experiment of trying to replicate this original and literal blood of their "lord". They then decided to weaponize it.
@@MrAws0m3Gaming
Lack of environmental pressure still would not explain lack of genetic drift - mutations still happen, unless they control them artificially.
"All life on earth" - but theres a major panorama of a giant forest of trees before the engineer melts himself... trees are life and where there before the engineer...
Nicholas Skjelmose he means living organisms like bacteria etc.
And no way it happened four BILLION years ago. Engineers would either be long extinct or be WAYYYYY more advanced than we could possibly imagine if they continued to learn and evolve for four BILLION years.
Plus trees are more advanced than bacteria
Austin Murphy you... do realize that they HAD been going extinct and only ONE was alive in Prometheus....
But where are the trees in that scene though? Didn't see any in this video
0:01 That scene with the Xenomorph moving slowly and moving it's arms up and down, ALWAYS cracks me up!
if An Illegal Immigrant Fought A Child Molester Wouldn't That Be Alien Vs Predator?
oml, im looking forward to that movie

I watched this hoping it was going to explain how come the engineer's ship crashed on LV426 after what we are led to believe as the pilot being killed by an alien. when Kane and the crew find it they find the alien eggs in what is described as the cargo hold and there is the lighted layer above the eggs. this gives the impression that they were cargo of the ship. the dead pilot was described as fossilised which is saying that it could have been there for thousands of years before the nostrmo found it.
my questions are,
if David engineered the alien in covenant, how do they get back in time and how do the engineers end up cultivating the eggs?
also in AVP it is explained that the aliens have been 'farmed' on earth for centuries which also is before David created them.
Antony Collis because ridley Scott has killed the timeline just to make his movies
Also AVP isn't cannon to the Alien timeline
There was no carbon dating of the engineer it just ‘looked’ thousands of years old
Because the xenomorph David created in covenant wasn't the origin, the mural in Prometheus tells us they were already around by then.
Really isn't that complicated
Sam Ireland For some, it could be
Alien - 10/10
Aliens - 10/10
Alien 3 - 5.5/10
Alien: Ressurection - 0/10
Prometheus - 9.5/10
Alien: Covenant - 8.5
You're totally right
The xeno in covenant is actually a protomorph
the plots to these movies really are not very good compared to how popular they are if you think about it. Crew gets infected, havoc ensues, crew never gets totally uninfected, repeat. The Engineers and their history and what they are up to really should be the main plot of these movies not just aliens bursting out of people's bodies.
In space, no one can hear you shart.
you mean fart
a no shart is you poop and fart at the same time
Let’s Go!
The simplistic way of the first movie really makes me think that one single alien in a closed place was better than a messy situation with a lot of aliens.
Thanks, nice to see it all in a row. With so much back and forth, I was beginning to get a bit confused.
Remember Captain Marvel’s cat? It’s now Ripley’s cat.
so what exactly is complicated with this timeline?
MrAlsgaard ikr
MrAlsgaard just more IGN trash
MrAlsgaard Just the fact Covenant and Prometheus (Covenant especially) are contradicting the original Alien film.
Def would like to see an updated version that includes the 40th Anniversary shorts and Isolation.
Amazing franchise. Amazing writing. I know it is when philosophy becomes a part of an already entertaining story. Love these movies!
What would Weyland Corp do with the aliens if caught? Weaponize them against who?
The Russians, clearly lol
@@romullosouza9399 Hahahahahaha ofc
"Not a morning person" LUL you got me there :D
In “Alien: Covenant” there are no xenomorphs shown in the film the closest we see to one is actually called the protomorph.
It's the first Xenomorph. That's according to the canon.
Thanks for clearing up the timeline! Great video!
Jones the Cat indeed, bravo sir, bravo. 👏🏻
PLEASE ANSWER:
1) why did the engineer drink the goo to kill himself in the beginning?
2) Why did they want to destroy earth?
The engineer drinking resulted in human on earth. They wanted to destroy all life on earth because they deemed it a failure of their experimenting.
I kinda like the direction of story the last 2 movies went. They give more depth to the aliens en gives us this philosophical idea of life creation. Compared to that the older movies are more just simple action movies with a lot of shooting and killing without a lot of in depth story.
I thought the Engineers created all mankind on Earth, not all life on Earth.
Diamonddeath They created all life on earth
So in conclusion the Deacon was David's first Xenomorph and it was not his last.
awesome how these movies go back further when new ones come out
YES I AM VERY MAD ABOUT ALIEN ISOLATION YOU MISSED THE TIMELINE OF ALIEN ISOLATION!!!!!!
THATS IMPORTANT TO!!!!

Prometheus is an amazing movie. Come fight me.
Harleigh19 I liked it, I agree
I thought Covenant was alright. It definitely had some great moments but I still think Prometheus is a way better movie.
Prometheus was awesome, but Covenant was horrible :( characters empty and totally forgettable except for David. No one will give 2 cents about this movie in a year.
Hell yeah it was
Harleigh19, the experts here for that movie seem to extend past the one I saw. All I remember is that ship rolling over everyone and that was that. Was there a Prometheus Redux released?
The best video explaining Aliens timeline
aliens ( part 2=) best one ever anyone with me on this?
Vasquez was badass

Alien covenant
Alien
Aliens

Should not AVP been added to the timeline, say right after the engineer created life on earth? Then continue on to Prometheus and so on?
it doesnt make sense in the timeline b/c if in the newest aliens movie it shows that that was the first xenomorph created then they show up like 90+ years before that dont make no sense
EDIT in the Novels apparently David was attempting to recreate the Xenomorph through DNA manipulation yadda yadda and that the Engineers did create them long before. In the movie's director commentary they say they decided to leave that out and maybe have David be the sole creator. So convoluted.
AVP has nothing to do with the Alien universe.
@NC Quadraxis : three books and two movies might have something different to say about that... especially after explicitly mentioning "Weyland" and "Yutani"
Mark Cameron You dont seem to understand, they have nothing to do with the canon, period. The books and two movies are a separate universe altogether.
brilliant timeline video. clear and concise. thanks
Finally someone that can explain to me the Alien timeline!
I was always confused with it!
kappa?
james camerons Aliens has a gap in the movie which could be made into a movie, the gap is when nutes parents come back to the buggy after visiting the Alien spacecraft and nute sees the xenomorph attached to her fathers face she screams then the film jumps to the marines arriving with ripley, james cameron could easily make a spin of movie to show what happens after nutes parents go back to the colony interesting theory i think..
tony weir not much.
For sure. It would be cool if everything that happened explained (to a tee!) how things got the way they were when Ripley's team arrives. Pretty tragic though when you know the ending.
I kinda like this one!!
tony weir maybe be cool as one of the books
i found that out and went and bought all 3 alien books that takes place in between or before the films, very interesting as i never knew these books existed, the 3 books are Alen river of pain, Alien sea of sorrows, Alien out of the shadows, brilliant books..
I kinda like the first AVP. Although Requiem was just another teen movie that happened to have xenomorphs & predators running around.
I actually felt like AVP was more of a teen movie than Requiem. Oh, that's right it was. AVP was PG-13 and Requiem was Rated-R.
I agree
@@jeremygreenidge5209 lol teen movie but remember there were no teens the first avp lol
Great presentation IGN. My favourite movie though was ALIEN the very first one with Tom Skerrit, and Segourney Weaver. Specifically the Nostromo- I just like big ships and the alien gunner on the ancient juggernaut.
I only accept the first two movies. After the 3rd,they fell off a cliff and I rejected everything else as TOO MADE UP.
Thanks man, its been 2 years since I last watched any Alien series and I'm glad I could catch up with your sumarry.
what bothers me is we were shown these movies clearly out of order according to the timeline
i just noticed the xenomorph's change form depending on the host's body
What about Wyland Yutani timeline? Kind of confused about the founder whether Peter Weyland (Prometheus) OR Charles Bishop Weyland (AVP) come first as both individuals both claimed founders.
Charles bishop is son of peter

Covenant was awesome, I was kinda happy when David survived. Now he has an army of colonists to experiment with
What about predator, when they come in. 🤣
Guessing that AVP is NOT canonical.
XspeedXracerX ridley Scott said answering to a question “is avp canon?” And he said “only things that ripley is in is canon”
*by the time ripley's timeline was the only timeline*
prometheus and covenant are also canon, to avoid confusion
Wasko so.. is IGN alien timeline true? Because i'm more of a predator fan and i know nothing about aliens so i want to watch the movies in order. (Bad english)
There is alot of missing, because Covenant ended up on a cliffhanger, so either you should wait for the new alien to come out, or watch it from 1st one (1979) up to Covenant, Prometheus and Covenant are prequels basically
Wasko I'd rather watch the 1st one to covenant. so it's
Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Prometheus, Alien Covenant
alien is a great movie and aliens is even better.. Two all time classic movies.. anyone that doesn't rate either one of them knows nothing about film..
You forgot isolation
what i dont understand is how bishop weyland keeps on coming back. he died in avp, he died in covenant, and he appears perfectly fine in alien 3? explanation please
