Man, how is a strong female lead "Feminist bullshit"? And then you say you put Aliens above, which has Ripley as a much more prominent lead woman with more emphasis on what you call "feminist bullshit". Just stick to your transformers and everything will be alright, all the lights and noises and no strong female leads. Like a mecca for you i'm sure.
i vaguely remember some recent video talking about how the xenomorph design was meant to be phallic and emasculating at the same time. it freaking blew my mind.
The major emasculating point was that the Alien was "bisexual" and could bring the fear of forced intercourse and unwanted birth to a man. Call it feminist if you want, but we all know modern feminism is some off the rails BS. Feminism was actually about equality back then.
The face huggers modeled after a vulva and vagina, and the chest burster after sperm. H.R. was very sexual in his artwork. Still my favorite artist. Sad he died :(
One detail left out from this is the 1975 Doctor Who story "Ark in Space," which is extremely similar to the plot of Alien and predates it by 4 years. It could be coincidental but the similarities line up shockingly well. And of course later on, Doctor Who in 2014 would borrow some elements from Alien.
Alien is my all-time favorite movie. This film is just pure perfection of a Sci-Fi/Horror genre. Even nowadays it looks fresh, interesting and scary. The cast was brilliant
Brett’s original death was not absurd. In fact, it was much creepier in my opinion, as the Alien points it’s fingers down before lowering itself, which just freaked me out, the way it slowly lowers itself was really disturbing. As for the killing of poor Brett, it was very brutal, as the Alien slowly crushed his head and pushed his spearpoint tail into his back before biting his head and taking him up into the vents. The way the blood flew down onto Parker stopped my heart and I couldn’t breathe. I understand the reason they cut it, being they wanted to hide the creature, but I think the original was much more disturbing. Just my opinion, don’t crucify me for it.
I agree...i've watched repeatedly since i found it and it's incredible. The way it's unrolls the tail and comes down after the cross position...it injects human aspects into the alien who is Cane's son in a way. It has human dna. This movie is a flat out masterpiece of the highest order. The opening credits alone could be given an award...just pure brilliance. And the soundtrack...again masterpiece.
How many media student projects turn into cult classics in their own right before leading on to the development of one of the most successful sci-fi movie franchises of all time? The beachball alien in Dark Star is Alien. One of the things I noticed about Dark Star is the depressing 'workaday' atmosphere of the crew as they go about their business of blowing planets up. There's that same tone about the crew in Alien which brings a sense of reality to the whole thing. I still think it's brilliant for its time; context and what it led on to.
Is it unpolished? Sure. Does it drag on at points? You bet. Does it contain one of the most unique sci-fi visions in cinema, somehow combining showing space exploration as depressingly tedious, dull blue collar work, slapsticky black comedy and a hauntingly poetic, surreal ending? It absolutely does and for these reasons cannot just be dismissed as "crappy student prototype for Alien". It's a fascinating movie on its own, warts and all.
Jerry Goldsmith's compositions captured every moment of the film with such unbelievable imagination, like most modern composers Stravinsky ,Paul Hendimen, Frank Zappa and up coming 21st century composers they take you to a higher place, Love that sound track!!!
If you actually read the original O'Banion's Alien screenplay (available online) you will notice that about 85% of it did end up in the film. Some stuff that didn't, later were added in Prometheus. And yes, producers Hill and Giler wanted to take all of the screenplay credits. He sued them and rightfully won.
This is one of my all time favorite films. It was a game changer in that the creature was inflicting terror into its victims. The Alien was psychologically already inside of you and that had not really been done before in the genre. The crew was defenseless against the creature and even the nostromo itself seemed to be against them. The film is an exercise in terror which is the psychological breakdown in this case of the crew by the creatures stalking, mind game before inflicting what the crew came to know would be their horrifying end. Thus the horror is the end result of terror. Something like that LOL. Outstanding film and tends to lead to all sorts of interesting in-depth conversations.
There was a 50's B&W sci fi movie called It! The Terror from Beyond Space that Alien reminded me of. I've always thought that it had some influence on the Alien concept of an unknown creature getting on board a ship and killing everyone.
You know, after all this time, now that you mentioned it I can see the influence of Mobius in some design elements, particularly in the space suits they wore, strangely enough.
Ripley is really the movie villain and alien is the protagonist who wants to bring happiness to the world but Ripley is selfish an only thinks on herself survival
I don't this is true for Alien, but I do think it is true for StarShip Troopers. The Insects are the oppressed Individuals being INvaded upon while the StarShip Troopers really are Nazis. Scenes of that Movie were taken from the Nazi Propaganda Movie- Olympead
The book "Starship Troopers" was about a militaristic society that could arguably be called fascist (opinions vary), but not Nazi. The movie started out as a script called "Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine" that had absolutely nothing to do with Heinlein's book "Starship Troopers". Then they licensed the title, and the director, Verhoeven, who grew up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands, didn't read much of the book (he's called it a bad book, though it's considered by many a classic), and said, "oh, this is Nazis, I know all about them", and proceeded to decorate the movie with Nazi references (a friend of mine used to call it, "Triumph of the Will 90210"), and heavily satirize/caricature the militaristic themes, rather than presenting them as in the book and letting the story stand or fall on its own merit. It's an entertaining movie, but had nothing to do with the book it's named after other than a few names, and should rightly have been called "Bug Hunt". And it's ruined the chances of us ever getting an authentic Starship Troopers movie, which is sad - the story is a landmark of science fiction, and deserved better. Oh well, the movie of "Starship Troopers" at least has more connection to the original book than the movie of "I, Robot" does (same kind of deal happened there).
I, Robot has only a *BARELY* passing connection to the book--which was a collection of short stories. The only similarities were a couple of character names, and the notion of a robot that had to be tracked down. Will Smith's character was completely made up for the movie. And humans didn't even allow robots on Earth at that point, yet.
The ships computer room was recycled from an old 'Dr Who' set with most of the sets built for 'Alien' ring recycled into 'Dr Who' sets over the next few years. Most recognisable the space station where Davros is held prisoner. While the self destruct bomb was recycled into the standard model for Cybermen bombs until the end of the classic who series.
ALIEN is one of my top 10 movies. And I had heard that O'Bannon was constantly trying to influence the direction of the film, a real pest. Then he takes credit for how great the movie turned out. This review got it right.
Saturnian Pytonwielki its possible just highly improbable.......EXTREMELY.Alien was one of those you could compare to winning the lottery...all the planets just alighned.I hope they never ever reboot it.Guaranteed someone will fuck it up!Case in point poltergeist reboot.COMPLETE FUCK UP.Later
another interesting Allen fact, the scene where the alien pops out of John hurts chest apart from him none of the other actors knew it was going to happen so the shock on there faces is actually genuine.
Alien is still scary as hell, the only thing that's always suspended my disbelief of the series are these super advanced humans not being more careful completely not interacting with the environment. Particularly in prometheus, the guy just taking off his helmet to smoke blows my mind. Woulda made more sense if the spores poked through the suit or slipped through the air filter, something
You know, I still want to see Jodor..whatever's take on Dune, and since he made a 'bible' for the project, it can still be filmed, either live action (now that effects technology can do what he envisioned), or better yet, animated (its about time we got a animated movie that isn't anime or aimed at children).
that Dune concept is incredible. A real missed opportunity but at the same time looking at the pre-viz it would not have been possible back then to make it.
if you mean by "good" that they were awful and disconnected then sure. Neither delivered its premise and Covenant just completely ignores the fact its a sequel. people find anything to complain about Prometheus and covenant we're good films of course it isn't as good as alien 1 but it is it's own thing and TBH I like how they dont give you the answer it makes you think. don't like it don't watch it
When I saw the detail of the crew kitchen are on Nostromo, I knew it could not have been created without something like the "spirit warrior" meeting mentioned on this video. Which in reality is probably a bunch of artists getting 5 kinds of high and tripping out, while throwing around their ideas. True brainstorming. I think this is becoming a lost art these days though.
Darkstar is a great sci fi comedy and a critical success, Ebert: "Dark Star is one of the damnedest science fiction movies I've ever seen, a berserk combination of space opera, intelligent bombs, and beach balls from other worlds."
This only shows how difficult is to make a classic movie, imho among the 5 best movies ever made, all these people taking the right decissions, one mistake and alien could have ended being just a bad joke.
Alien is awesome I watched it again last night, I do want to see what happens to David, but hopefully the Blomkamp film will get made + we see new alien continuations in the future.
Dark Star is comedy, it was meant to be funny and awkward and is clearly a movie that didn´t take itself too serious as it was obviously self aware of its limitations, the dialogues with the intelligent bomb that developed consciousness should tell you that Dark Star did its job perfectly. WTF Looper? have you actually seen the damn movie?
The film was ok, but I hated the fact both the engineers and the alien where diminished by fact that it was the creation of the most human android that destroyed and created them. The engineer especially they where presented as grand and mysterious
how is it untold when you have literally just made a bite-sized version of the documentary that is also on TH-cam, which you also use clips from that documentary
"Unfortunately though John carpenter's Dark Star, wasn't very good ?" Coincidentally I watched it again only last week after what 40 years and it was and still is; a fucking masterpiece and the Alien was genius (and all that despite the coming since of CGG .) But I agree with you about Alien,s debt to it, which alone should be enough to make to take second look.
The true origins of Alien can be traced back to the 1958 sci-fi thriller IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE. The plot of that movie goes like this....spaceship lands on planet, monster sneaks on board said spaceship, spaceship later takes off, monster starts killing off the crew members one by one....sound familiar?
"Alien" has character build up, a simple story with various mysterious elements, great special effects, that dont go overboard in showing too much, great story line, great build up, tension and horror. And this is where Covenant fails. The characters are paper thin, no mystery, no tension, great special effects and photography, that´s true, but really dumb plot line. What made Alien great was the way they made it so tense during the alien attacks and how the characters evolved during the movie, in covenant it´s just a bunch of dieable characters going from one situation to the next and taking some really stupid decisions along the way. I´m starting to think that what made Alien amazing was the limitation of its time, they couldn´t shoot big sets and the alien in broad daylight because it looks stupid, so they had to hide everything in the shadows, which helps immensely to the pace, tension and mystery of the scenes. Just like what happened with George Lucas, Ridley Scott when faced with the limitations, had to accept them and make the best movie possible. Now with loads of money and CGI he can do anything and ends up making some really bad decisions, just like the characters in the Covenant... Who goes to a alien planet without a vac suit...? Well... The characters in the Covenant. But they would remove the helmets soon they know there is breed able atmosphere and so the Prometheus characters are not that intelligent either...
Squirter: From and including: Friday, November 11, 2011 To, but not including Saturday, May 20, 2017 Result: 2017 days It is 2017 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date Or 5 years, 6 months, 9 days excluding the end date
theres a b sci fo movie from the 50s or 60s that has the same premise as Alien and a number of story similarities.Right now i cant remember the name of the film
Why all the dissing of Dark Star in this video? It's a cult classic, science fiction comedy and an interesting look at the utter boredom of long-term space missions, with some brilliant lines.
Eh. The only thing about the "Engineer" concept I didn't like was that they made the proportions on the body all wrong compared to the dead one in the first Alien.
What other horror movies would you like to see us feature next?
Don't Look Now
Looper Housa
Split Second
Dog Soldiers
kazaam: how have you ever seen shaqs acting
alien is one of the best sci-fi horror films hands down
I agree with U...the first four movies of the Alien series are my favorites!!!
DarthRaider187 the first four? Alien3 and Ressurrection really?
it sucks honestly. I enjoyed Prometheus waaay more
Resurrection sucked. 1 and 2 are the best, 3 is ok.
Man, how is a strong female lead "Feminist bullshit"? And then you say you put Aliens above, which has Ripley as a much more prominent lead woman with more emphasis on what you call "feminist bullshit". RIP Bill Paxton.
RIP John Hurt
that beachball
best alien in movie history
Kayra Ulusoy
Disappointed we never got a sequel and never got to see the alien beachball queen.
rip soflo antonio
Kayra Ulusoy u could put a level on ur eyebrows or monobro dead level i tell ya!
Aroused me to climax.
i vaguely remember some recent video talking about how the xenomorph design was meant to be phallic and emasculating at the same time. it freaking blew my mind.

yea... modern feminazis are a freakish horror show! xD
The face huggers modeled after a vulva and vagina, and the chest burster after sperm. H.R. was very sexual in his artwork. Still my favorite artist. Sad he died :(
This movie franchise is like a rite of passage -Aliens 3 was my introduction to the films franchise, hooked ever since!!!

I love the alien films
You should do the untold truth of predator.
DarkStar is not a crappy movie - it is a fucking classic!
I declare Dark Star a masterpiece!
Albeit a shitty, low budget one 😕
Alien is my all-time favorite movie. This film is just pure perfection of a Sci-Fi/Horror genre. Even nowadays it looks fresh, interesting and scary. The cast was brilliant

How dare you call Dark Star Crappy it's genius.
Dark Star is a brilliant film for its genre and time.
Brilliant? NO
it is a very fun movie with a lot to laugh at. I really enjoy it when I see it.

Absolutely.

Dark Star was EPIC!!!
It was actually based on the 1950s sci fi horror film, "It! The Terror Beyond Space".
M Smith i gave u thumbs up even know i have no idea wtf is going on
"Based on" is a bit of a strong term.
"Inspired by" would be better, since they have somewhat different themes, of paranoia and being hunted.

A film that changed my life. One of many masterpieces. Most of the "deleted" scenes we're correctly cut. Theatrical version rocks!
Dark Star is legendary!
_Dark Star_ has a timeless charm! Still remember first watching it on CBS late at night one summer in 1980 or so...
Darkstar is a brilliant subversive comedy.
ayy yes dex, glad you keep getting called back for more looper stuffs
Also, Can you please find some actual 'Untold.' stuff for one of these videos? Or rename this show 'The repeatedly told story of...'
All it takes is me seeing the shortest of clips of Bill Paxton for me to feel really fucking depressed. I really miss that dude.
There was a 50's B&W sci fi movie called It! The Terror from Beyond Space that Alien reminded me of. I've always thought that it had some influence on the Alien concept of an unknown creature getting on board a ship and killing everyone.

In which parallel universe is Dark Star not a good film?
Are you kidding me?... Dark Star is a cult classic.
2:38 , Did the narrator just say ,20th century" Fucks " ?
He said 20th Century "Fox"
Ripley is really the movie villain and alien is the protagonist who wants to bring happiness to the world but Ripley is selfish an only thinks on herself survival

lol watch it again my friend the bugs used their butt plasma spiters to knock an astroid towards earth FIRST
what's wrong with "I robot" ?
I, Robot has only a *BARELY* passing connection to the book--which was a collection of short stories. 6:39 that's the most terrifying thing I've ever seen.
Dark Star wasn't good? What did you guys smoke???
Obviously the wrong stuff.
You really shouldn't call Moebius a "cartoonist".
The movie Alien....
Still one of my favorites....
ALIEN is one of my top 10 movies. And I had heard that O'Bannon was constantly trying to influence the direction of the film, a real pest. Then he takes credit for how great the movie turned out. This review got it right.
There's just something about a Sci Fi Movie that starts with the Discovery of a derelict alien spaceship.
Dman, you went deep this time, thank you for all of that information :)
Honestly one of the greatest movies ever.
Its imposible to make better sci- fi movie.
Well, Space odysey its not exacly same style si fi. Its not a horror. even that, its still genius, but in my opinion not better.
Aliens
***** for me alien and aliens is like the same:) First has better climate, second od genius space shooter, but yes. They both got same- max level
Ridley Scott keeps ruining Alien movies.
another interesting Allen fact, the scene where the alien pops out of John hurts chest apart from him none of the other actors knew it was going to happen so the shock on there faces is actually genuine.

You know, I still want to see Jodor..whatever's take on Dune, and since he made a 'bible' for the project, it can still be filmed, either live action (now that effects technology can do what he envisioned), or better yet, animated (its about time we got a animated movie that isn't anime or aimed at children).
Dark Star is brilliant and an underrated classic.
this video would have made sense before i saw covenant. now i just want it all to end
that Dune concept is incredible. A real missed opportunity but at the same time looking at the pre-viz it would not have been possible back then to make it.
Alien Covenant and Prometheus were both good in their own respective ways.
if you mean by "good" that they were awful and disconnected then sure.
Neither delivered its premise and Covenant just completely ignores the fact its a sequel.
Its a thing that comes up on CinemaSins all the time. Characters talking about way more interesting things that happened than the movie you're watching.
That is Covenant in a nutshell.
The fate of Shaw.
What David did and why he made the choices he did.
David's reasoning for all of his actions. That one is the biggest missed opportunity. We all think about AI and the singularity and what could happen. With David it could have been deeply explored. Considering his actions there are so many questions all starting with Why. Instead we get a by the numbers horror romp with the monster picking people off and the survivors running around while they each get picked off. Absolutely nothing new. Covenant is a crappy tired retread.
Well, someone's being a bitter Bertha.
AcidGlow both of their marketing campaigns were absolutely phenomenal. Especially Covenant.
people find anything to complain about Prometheus and covenant we're good films of course it isn't as good as alien 1 but it is it's own thing and TBH I like how they dont give you the answer it makes you think. don't like it don't watch it
Well, they will certainly be cited forever as how to not make a sequel on a legacy

INTERIOR CROCODILE ALLIGATOR.

OH WHAT A LOVELY DAY.
Dark Star was seen by a lot of people in the UK: it was broadcast on our TV
I'm soooooooo glad Streep wasn't Ripley. Thank God!
Any movie that turns out well is a miracle.
Forbidden planet would be a classic space horrors study. So many films came from this movie..
Nice, TH-cam. No problem loading the ads, but the content lags like crazy. Not my internet or connection.
This only shows how difficult is to make a classic movie, imho among the 5 best movies ever made, all these people taking the right decissions, one mistake and alien could have ended being just a bad joke.
HR Geiger worked on Dune with Salvador Dali. It's probably why he got the Alien gig.
great video!
Alien is awesome I watched it again last night, I do want to see what happens to
David, but hopefully the Blomkamp film will get made + we see new alien continuations
in the future.
These are the good videos looper makes
Hey, he actually pronounced H.R. Gieger correctly.
...and yet, bizarrely, you managed to to misspell it.
But not Jodorowsky :/
Anthony Rodemus Yes, so I did...
Guardian couple more decades and americans would probably learn to say "Ryu" right too, but I actually doubt it..
@ Haohmaru HL

I LOVE the tomato alien in Dark Star!!! it was cute!!! :-D
This is sooo cool and interesting! Something i really didnt know!
And they were also influence by the movie
"IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE".
Dexter, is that you? Sanity not included was left in a cliffhanger.
So interesting I love this! Thanks for posting.
The film was ok, but I hated the fact both the engineers and the alien where diminished by fact that it was the creation of the most human android that destroyed and created them. The engineer especially they where presented as grand and mysterious
giger played the biggest part in Alien (xenomorph) design have you seen his work??? If anyone disagrees just look him up.
Gonna see Alien Cov after school!! Frickin pumped!!
NecromancerKing you are gonna love it went to see an early release a few days ago fox has its pros
Amazing....I cannot imagine Alien without Sig.
how is it untold when you have literally just made a bite-sized version of the documentary that is also on TH-cam, which you also use clips from that documentary
Who else is watching this without pants?
TheCoranub meeeeeeee
TheCoranub Im wearing shorts, so yep no shorts 😃☺
TheCoranub all naket
Me
TheCoranub I have two pair of pants on :(
I think I saw dark star as a child but didn't know the title.
Im confused. The Dune movie came out after Alien, not before it.
This is one of my favorite franchises
"Unfortunately though John carpenter's Dark Star, wasn't very good ?"
Coincidentally I watched it again only last week after what 40 years and it was and still is; a fucking masterpiece and the Alien was genius (and all that despite the coming since of CGG .)
But I agree with you about Alien,s debt to it, which alone should be enough to make to take second look.
I'm more on the Alien than Predator. No wait. I'm ON the Alien side than Predator.
you see ripley was in a situation she never wanted.
the actor who playd her, was allso in that position. that contributes to the play.
Dark Star was/is brilliant.
check sound level. it's too high! i almost had a heart atack...
God damn Meryl Streep was frickin hot back in the day
7:06 Did I hear that right? The "Alien and Philosophy" book was released in June of 2017? lol
Dark Star was GREAT, Prometheus was middling at best.
how to tell a true nerd? most people will look at something and see a great work. a nerd will look at it and see a rough outline.

What was "borderline absurd" about the other cut of Brett's fatal encounter with the Alien?
WHOAH! Did you say a book published in June 2017?!
It's only May 2017!
Why all the dissing of Dark Star in this video? It's a cult classic, science fiction comedy and an interesting look at the utter boredom of long-term space missions, with some brilliant lines.
But who is the space jockey
Christopher Lewis An Engineer, right? Retconning, the worst invention ever...
Yah an engineer. I wish they hadn't retconned it
Its David, not an Engineer
Eh. The only thing about the "Engineer" concept I didn't like was that they made the proportions on the body all wrong compared to the dead one in the first Alien.
Yes the space Jockey is much larger than the Engineers.
