    One thing that sticks out to me about Jay - he finds a way to put a positive spin on any car's shortcomings or quirks. Engine Block had a tendency to fall out? "I like a lighter car personally". Car catches fire warm days? "Well I always liked a bonfire once in awhile."
    In a world where folks seem to be on the hunt for something to complain about, I love this approach!

    In the late 1970's my brother bought a used Lamborghini 350 gt for about $4,600. I remember well the 12 cylinder engine, toggle switches, colored indicator lights, single windshield wiper & rear bench. Also had a double H 8 speed manual transmission, which Jay didn't mention, but even as teenager I was impressed. His car was gray when bought, but he had it painted white. No one had any idea what a Lamborghini was at the time, but he did have to have a lot of service done on the engine, to keep it running smoothly. Gas mileage was awful ( around 8mpg) and when alternate day gas rationing came to play under the Carter administration he finally traded it for a used Mercedes (which was selling for $6,700, so he thought it was a great deal). Obviously, you could retire on what this car costs now, but does bring back fond memories of the past to watch this.

      I would be fascinated to know more about the 8-speed manual transmission. That must have some shift pattern and the linkage must have been absolutely mind boggling. May I politely suggest you are misrembering? Jay did not mention it because it does not exist.

      There was never an eight speed transmission in the Lamborghini 350GT. All of them had a five speed transmission.

    I had never seen this model so well photographed and filmed, one can really appreciate the fine proportions and classic beauty it has. My favorite Lamborghini is still the Espada, but this is also great!

    Like Jay, the 1960's styling represents my 'boyhood' dream era--so this 1965 is my ideal of a classy touring car with a wonderful interior. I like that the owner/restorer added the metallic component to the original paint color. I have seen enough expensive Italian automobiles that look 'flat' about two years after purchase. Even quality wax doesn't seem to bring the paint back. While later Lambo's have 'in your face' styling they never had the appeal for me that this car has.

    Funny how time flies ... Classic car prices have become (even more) insane in the last decade or so. I remember checking out the 350's and 400's prices (in Europe) back when I first watched this clip on Jay's old website and prices were still *somewhat* reasonable back then. Checked prices again today and the cheapest 350 I could find is €700,000. Heck, even the Espadas are now between €150,000 and €300,000 and the Miuras I found were between €1,000,000 and €3,000,000.

    • @jackshepherdson
      @jackshepherdson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We shake our heads now but there wasn't such a side spread appreciation of classics back in the old days. There was the mentality of why buy an old Lamborghini when you could get a new one, or even 2 new Ferrari's. How times have changed.

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Shepherdson
      I wouldn't put it quite that extremely. Classic Bugattis have always been popular and were never cheap. Same goes with lots of pre-WW2 Mercedes', Duesenbergs and other rare brands/models. So there always was a market for rare classic cars, but I think that market has become much bigger in the past 2 or 3 decades (in terms of people who are interested in classic cars).
      Back in the day it was more or less an enthusiast's thing - these days you have lots of non-petrolheads with too much money who view classic cars as investments. I remember a time when you could get (non 2+2 seater) Ferraris at second-hand-market prices. That all changed when Enzo died and suddenly even crappy 1980s 308s commanded premium prices.

    • @jackshepherdson
      @jackshepherdson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      1SaG you make an excellent point, there were always high prices on Bug's, French Art Deco teardrops, racing Jag's, etc ever back in the 60's, and there is now a lot of people buying to speculate. It seems like interest, at least for proper enthusiasts, has moved around to favour 60's and 70's Cars the same way prewar stuff used to be. It's very interesting to watch as cars like Fulvia's and Testa Rossa finally being appreciated and seeing the prices skyrocket.

    • @jackshepherdson
      @jackshepherdson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      1SaG and the amount of interest in classic cars from real enthusiasts has really grown too. There's definitely more enthusiasts than there used to be, which is a good thing. I think crappy 328's and Dino GT4 prices are rising not because of Enzo's death, but because 250 and 166 prices have risen so drastically in the last 2 decades, which has led many to think 70's and 80's Fezza's are next to go up.

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      :) You won't get any argument from me re the Fulvia ... but I'm not quite there yet when it comes to the Testarossa. Maybe it's because I was a teen in the 80s and that car just screams "1980s" to me as much as big hair or shoulder pads do.
      That said: I might be part of a minority now with this view. A buddy of mine had the chance to buy a Testa about 4 years back. It was in excellent shape and actually "affordable" (think they wanted around €45k for it). He didn't buy it and today I can send him into a deep depression by dropping the word "Testarossa" - he probably could've doubled his investment by now.

      @Beer_Dad1975 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      simonstaiger yes I realise that they can't make them exactly like this any more, I was more meaning why don't they make GT's any more instead of churning out mid engined wedges. Ferrari make some nice GT's still, but Lamborghini seems to have packed it in.

    • @sstaiger
      @sstaiger 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Sharpe Got that. Expect no more GTs from them. Just sportscars.
      And nothing along the lines of the 350 / 400 GT, I suppose.

    • @Beer_Dad1975
      @Beer_Dad1975 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      simonstaiger A shame as they were clearly very good at making GT's once, and I'm not keen on the current crop of sports cars. I guess they just make what their customers buy though, and since I'm a middle class working man, I'm not their customer and probably never will be baring a miracle.

    I'm riding shotgun... my lovely wife has been driving a real car for a month now... and she's like trying to race a person who... does not have to go fast because they just look so cool.. my wife's birthday is coming up... 71... I was worried she was getting older and... not paying attention... not anymore... very competitive driving... we paced the Lambo down the hill at the speed limit... but I felt her foot on the gas around the corners... she still remembers how...

    What a fine automobile. Sold for about 14K in 1965. They go for a half a million to nearly a million now. My Dad bought a Maserati Ghibli in Italy new in 69 for about 16K but they aren't nearly as valuable now as this car. The Maserati was a really fine driving car though. Ferraris and Lambos are insanely high priced now but not Maseratis so much.

    Wow those specs, are amazing for 65' 350hp from a 3.5L motor. I really like look of it. Although I don't think it would be match for the Corvettes of the period in term of straight line performance at fraction of the cost.

    • @HOSSMCGILLICUTTI
      @HOSSMCGILLICUTTI 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The base corvette had 250hp, then many optional 327's with up to a 375hp and it had fuel injection. The 327 Fuel-injected 375 hp vette with a 4 speed, would do a 1/4 mile in 14.4 Seconds @99 mph. The 1965 Lamborghini 350 GT would do a 1/4 mile in 14.3 Seconds @101 mph. The rarely seen 396 vette had 425 hp and would do a 1/4 mile in 14.1Seconds @103 mph. So because of the weight difference, the Lamborghini could hold its own against most any American car of the time. One last thing, the corvette also came with the optional 2 Speed PowerGlide automatic transmission. It took about half a day to get to 1/4 mile, ask anyone thats driven and older model chevy with the two speed. Haha

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      HOSSMCGILLICUTTI
      The powerglide was very popular with drag racer. Only 1 shift and when all the high HP cars could melt the tires, they were all traction limited anyway. When you factor in that it's takes about 1/4 of second to complete a shift with manual it adds up.

    • @HOSSMCGILLICUTTI
      @HOSSMCGILLICUTTI 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GlassTopRX7 Ya, the powerglide or a copy of it is used in almost every home built hot rod today. But to get the most out of it takes more than 500-600 hp.

  • @arkansasrazorbackfan
    @arkansasrazorbackfan 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, same block but different build. The Corvette had 425hp to the Chevelle's 375hp. Google it if you don't believe me. The point remains that 350hp wasn't such a "big big number" for top of the line sports cars in the 60's.

      I like the lights because they remind me of the Mk III Austin Allegro.

      I like the lights too, kind of a cross between a 58' vette and a later model Jag. I hate to compare it to an American car, but if you have to, then a 58' vette Isn't to bad of an example.

      The Star of China I used to own an Austin Allegro, that was my first car. And BL had a history of copying the styling of supercars. So the front of the MkI and II Allegro looked SAAB ish and the Rover SD-1 was styled after the Ferrari Daytona.

      Some 350GT's and fewer 400GT's had the big single headlight per side.

    The silhouette profile of the car (except the front end) looks a lot like a sixties era Porsche 911.

    My folks paid 18,000 for their first house in 1969. That's about par for today's Gallardo at over 100,000.

    I'll take that model, over a "Hurracan" any day!! As far as the comment on Enzo Ferrari, causing dissatisfied customers starting their own car companies, one should realize that Enzo Ferrari was a very stubborn man, and very hard to work with, and to work for!! As an example, he didn't want to put disc brakes on his cars, until Jaguar put them on their XK , and XKE models!! He was stubborn and very "Tunnel Visioned"!! But somehow, Ferrari had managed to evolve, and innovate, in later models.

    7000rpm, on a Lambo V12? Even during '65, 8K+ would've been possible!
