Ah, the Corniche FHC. Saw my first one in "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Steve McQueen. One of the later model years is still on my bucket list. You have good taste.
To put that in perspective my wife’s parents bought a 1915 home in 1983 (3400 sq ft) for under $20,000. I don’t recall what the exchange rate is at that time, but yeah that a LOT of money
Same here. I'm Italian, I remember going through the pages of Quattroruote magazine in the late 70s as a young kid, if I remember correctly it was something like 300,000,000 lire! 😂
I totally agree. The Camargue was hand built with the finest materials available such as hand-selected walnut veneer, stainless steel and Nuella hide. The modern Rolls is mainly plastic.
Great episode, it's so nice when things get handed down through the family. You know Pop Pop is looking down smiling not to mention the satisfaction his grandmother is feeling giving it to the right person who appreciates it and has put it back on the road. Part of what makes this show so appealing is the differences in personalities and tastes in vehicles. One man's indifference is another man's love.
When Donald mentioned if broke down after Ben drove it the first time I just about had a stroke, he should know better than anyone, that Rolls Royce doesn't break down, they just sometimes fail to proceed!

I agree that Donald dresses well. I am of the opinion, further, that the young cads who are showing up at concours and other events in skinny ankle hugging mom pants, front pockets bulging with the requisite cel phone, are just pathetic in following that fashion trend. They look like overfull estrogen bags just back from the tofu restaurant. Today's fashion is designed to make men look effeminate. Resist this evil force.

One of my Dad's neighbors drove a Camargue, dark blue with red upholstery. It was always seemingly so BIG as it silently pulled by. And the Gentleman always had a little smile on his face...
Imagine how intimidating the commission must have been. "We want a very modern looking coupe but we keep the 1920s grille, it must be elegant and have the size of a yacht with a high roof line. It's going to be by far the most expensive RR and car in the world, it's has to have two great rear seats and be all out British excellence, so we called you Italians". I think they did brilliant. the square shapes are so subtly not straight but rounded, the line between the hood an fender and how that ends/starts in the head lights "block", the wheel flares are simply perfection. If I only had a front fender I would put that on a pedestal in my home. .
Very nice car and the story behind it is terrific. My favorite part of every episode is the drive down the aisle past a few of Jay's cars and this week we got just a glimpse of my favorite car in Jay's entire collection, his 1966 Ford Seven Litre.
It's what I call an aficionado's car. It was a departure from RR's usual design aesthetic with its squared-off lines. I would take it over Jay's new Spectre on looks alone. Lucky guy to inherit such a distinctive car.
What I found striking is the hood height on the Spectre when Donald was standing next to it. It’s nearly at chest level vs. Camargue is slightly below hip level. Our cars today have become so large that it makes no sense. There is something to be said about small proportions that are executed well in design, I think the tighter overall proportions show off the design cues better. That’s why I think car makers like Porsche were genius to maintain the silhouette of the 911, even though the modern 911 is larger it still shows off its design cues.
The Rolls Royce Camargue is a beautiful car. I love 2 door coupes especially and cars anyway. It blows my mind that no one wanted it. Great video. David.
A beautiful example of what was the pinnacle of Rolls Royce cars in the 1970s. I don't necessarliy agree with everything Jay says in this video. I mean, whoever owned a Carmarge and worried about drag coefficients and gas mileage ? A truly superb luxury automobile. Thanks for bringing us along for a drive. Fantastic.
I remember in the 80's when no one wanted this model and could be had for basically almost nothing. Then the rarity came out and the prices skyrocketed.
It's still very cheap relatively and I remember looking for one about 15-20 years ago when Silver Shadows in reasonable condition were at sale under 10.000 euros, the Camargues were nearly 30.000. Probably also because they were better kept, but also because they were rare.
The beautiful camargue was, at the time, very similar to Lady Penelope's FAB 1 Rolls Royce. Lady P's Rolls was even more extreme Camargue than the Real car. Thanks for this. cool video.
My 94 Lincoln Towncar was the most comfortable car I've ever owned and most luxurious as well and I cannot help but see the essence on my Towncar in this RR with the slab sides, goes on forever long hood and the front "face" . The young man is most fortunate ...
The first car I owned that made me love cars was an '88 towncar. I was 18 and I bought in in 1999 for 3500$. Put wire wheels on it and it was my baby. Loved the way the brakes felt. Couldn't imagine driving a rolls. I've got a mustang today with 4 piston calipers, discs all around, still doesn't compare to the feel of the towncar's brakes.
There are few things better in the material life than owning things that have a story, particularly when the story is about a family member. I know some of the pieces we own are very valuable, which adds to the interest sometimes but the idea of something making it unique was the real treat. My family loved telling me the tales and I have loved telling our kids the same things. The idea of trying to turn a profit and losing the item is beyond me.
Wonderful! Thank you! I love watching the body floating above the imperfect pavement. Reminds me of my 1978 Delta 88, but I loved the room of my '72 Olds Ninety Eight... I could put my left foot into next week in that thing... this automobile is definitely the Cadillac of Rolls....😊
About time the thoroughly misunderstood Camargue got some love in the 21st century! I really only took notice of them myself from a photo ad(in Autoweek I believe)for R-R dealer memorabilia which featured one shod with Vogue tyres: I was piloting a Lincoln Town Car with Vogues at the time. Have since learned about the Camargue's Pininfarina/Fiat design heritage. A most unique Crewe car!
Sometimes being different and exclusive is a real good thing and this is a classic example of thinking outside the box and hitting a grand slam! I agree with others, just hearing Jay and Donald share stories and details on the history of the car and brand is a life lesson you just do not get anymore!! Thanks for a fantastic journey through time with a classic!!
What a great story and yes, the Camargue is not really Rolls Royce as some think of it, but it has grown on me significantly as I'm sure it has for many. Fun to watch Jay Leno backtracking, a viewer bonus. One of the Garage's best episodes and of course the chemistry between Jay and Donald is great. I am originally from Glasgow in Scotland (I live now in Dubai, where even a Spectre is nothing special) and often bemuse those witnessing a couple of fellow Scots 'warmly' greeting each other with such 'insults' often more cutting than Jays to Donald in language that would make a sailor blush. Just a great episode for so many reasons. Oh, and that car is off the charts in 'coolness' compared to a Mustang GT, what were you thinking uttering such nonsense, Jay?
Love the RR story of this young gentleman having had contact with it from childhood on. I completely can feel his sentiments for the car there. Lovely.
I may be one of the few people who likes the Camargue. It's different and stylish in its own right. That's awesome that Ben kept the car in the family and has kept it going. I work near an old money area and I saw a Camargue on the road the other day. I was amazed to see such a rare car on the road. Way more interesting than seeing a new Lamborghini making noise.
i was driving in extreme weather when this came on, and THIS IS ONE OF IF NOT THE BEST OF JAY'S VIDEOS! when i got home i found the Tyrell Camarge video and got to see what i missed visually by driving while it was on, the rear looks like a Chevy Caprice, and the front loOks like a Cadillac of my least favorite design, but, after watching the Tyrell video I am SOLD ON THIS CAR TOO!
Love when Donald is on, his knowledge is ridiculous and his debutance complements jay so well! Keep these episodes up, always watch the jay and Donald episodes. I will say I miss the sarcasm and music from the older ones😂
My goodness, My late uncle had a Camargue, bought it new, Gold with green leather interior, cost him a fortune and whenever I would see the car it looked huge but look at it next to the spectre, it looks tiny. My word, cars have become huge and that is from a European perspective
The Camargue has such a presence. It might not be the most beautiful car on the road but, oh boy, what a statement that car makes. Well done Ben. Thanks for preserving it! To be honest I’d take Camargue over Specter any day.
Awesome, awesome episode! Jay, Ben and Donald……great banter between all of you 😂! The Camargue….it is in beautiful condition. Ben has a wonderful grandmother. Ben, don’t ever let that car out of your hands….its a keeper!
Jay Jay Jay Jay.... My 66 Galaxies 500 LTD had a black vinyl hard top.. and popular mechanics tested them for decibels noting, they were quieter then a Rolls Royce... Classy 2dr coupe, and came in Oyster Blue
The banter back-and-forth between Jay and Donald is why I turn into these episodes at this point. Truly good stuff.

That’s why I think car makers like Porsche were genius to maintain the silhouette of the 911, even though the modern 911 is larger it still shows off its design cues.
I agree. The Camargue is far more elegant than the Spectre which is an over blown monster truck in comparison.
What a great car story and what a lucky guy ! Absolutely GORGEOUS color !!
Jay's humor is genius
except that he repeats his favorite wisecracks in almost all the episodes
Funniest line in this episode - It's like a mistress who can cook...
This video is so entertaining. Thanks Jay. Donald Osborne is a treasure.
Ben thanks for saving this beauty.
Old RR has the most majestic grille
Yes, I agree, and it is actually called the radiator shell.
I have definitely heard of it.
I do love the Camargue, Iain Tyrell did a great video on them. Man's a God damned encyclopaedia.
They play off each other so well. The best car geek duo ever.
I could listen to Donald talk cars all day !
Why? He know little!
I like it when Jay gets into sartorial satire with good old Donald.....
Im with Donald, its a beautiful design.
The Rolls Royce Camargue is a beautiful car. I love 2 door coupes especially and cars anyway. It blows my mind that no one wanted it. Great video. David.
tunedbyai AI fixes this (AI assisted Car Design/ Tuning). Rare Rolls-Royce Camargue featured.
Fantastic.
The banter is priceless!
Shirley Bassey had a green one like this. She opened her BBC shows with it.
These videos with Mr Osborne are fantastic. The interaction between both is awesome, more of this please!!
Thanks for this. cool video.
The Everflex (vinyl) roof was not specified as standard on Camargue.
It was standard on the Silver Wraith II, and an option on the Silver Shadow Ii, so would have been available as an option for later Camargues.
It looks much better without.
I adore how the body just floats over rough road surface. What Donald does not know about cars is not worth knowing.
Maybe the shocks need to be renewed?
My 94 Lincoln Towncar was the most comfortable car I've ever owned and most luxurious as well and I cannot help but see the essence on my Towncar in this RR with the slab sides, goes on forever long hood and the front "face" . The young man is most fortunate ...
Just Not a Rolls
The first car I owned that made me love cars was an '88 towncar. I was 18 and I bought in in 1999 for 3500$. Put wire wheels on it and it was my baby. Loved the way the brakes felt. Couldn't imagine driving a rolls. I've got a mustang today with 4 piston calipers, discs all around, still doesn't compare to the feel of the towncar's brakes.
Built like a Tank, but rides like a Dream. Thanks Jay. 😎👍😎
I love the headliner on that car.
I'm with you Jay on vinyl tops. They're ridiculous.
A real beauty!
Wonderful! Thank you! I love watching the body floating above the imperfect pavement. Reminds me of my 1978 Delta 88, but I loved the room of my '72 Olds Ninety Eight... I could put my left foot into next week in that thing... this automobile is definitely the Cadillac of Rolls....😊
the doors were the same as a 77 olds niniety 8 regenacy . not a 1978 delta 88 88 had round fenders and the 98 was square design.
I love the way it majesticly rises and falls on its suspension.
15:18 - “My first car was a 1983 Rolls Royce Camargue”. Mic Drop. 👏👏
To and from the hamptons….That says everything you need to know 🤓
I'm a Jag guy and this was quite a treat, Bens car floats on the road.
I was looking at an old Chevrolet ad in a magazine and they were marketing the vinyl top as being the style of a convertible without the cons.
At his mature age, Jay can still be funny. A comedian at heart 😂😂😂
I like donald. If he doesn't use a pink coupe de ville cadillac as a daily driver then i would be disappointed.
I love jay roasting Donald the whole time so good, love this series Jay!
What a wonderful episode.
Love the RR story of this young gentleman having had contact with it from childhood on. I completely can feel his sentiments for the car there. Lovely.
Use to drive a camargue all the time. Loved it
I may be one of the few people who likes the Camargue. It's different and stylish in its own right. That's awesome that Ben kept the car in the family and has kept it going. I work near an old money area and I saw a Camargue on the road the other day. I was amazed to see such a rare car on the road. Way more interesting than seeing a new Lamborghini making noise.
I love watching Jay he's so funny 😁
I love all of these episodes with Donald! They are very funny together.
0:03 Never heard of??? Are you kidding? Know this car for almost 50 years, when I was playing car cards at the age of 12 here in Germany...
i was driving in extreme weather when this came on, and THIS IS ONE OF IF NOT THE BEST OF JAY'S VIDEOS! when i got home i found the Tyrell Camarge video and got to see what i missed visually by driving while it was on, the rear looks like a Chevy Caprice, and the front loOks like a Cadillac of my least favorite design, but, after watching the Tyrell video I am SOLD ON THIS CAR TOO!
Cmon Jay, most car guys are very familier with the Camargue. It was the the coolest looking, most expensive rolls for a generation.
I remember when it came out. I was just a kid, but you read about it.
Looks hideous.
@@Stijn5 It does look hideous doesn't matter how much it costs or did cost.
Which generation lmao? I don't think most guys know what a ghost is let alone the Camargue lol.
I love the standalone Grille and nice long boot, of the Carmargue- unlike the fat fastback Spectre with the inset Grille that looks like a fat 🐳.
Your uncle had STYLE! Green leather is the way to go in a Rolls.
The Camargue has such a presence. It might not be the most beautiful car on the road but, oh boy, what a statement that car makes. Well done Ben. Thanks for preserving it! To be honest I’d take Camargue over Specter any day.
The vibes in this content is off the charts. Love it.
That car looked 100% better in sunlight versus the artificial lighting in the garage. Beautiful. 😊
Very nice replay of the love and hate this car got for the last 50 years.
You don't have to sell Jay on a 1966 Ford Galaxie.
