Great performance by Hahn and great conducting by Putin. edit: In all seriousness though, I think that Hilary Hahn interprets Brahms the best. Beyond her phenomenal technical skill to master this tough concerto, she plays with a natural "heaviness" in her bow and vibrato that perfectly suits the richness of Brahms.
He is Estonian -> you would probably got at least seriously injured if he told him in the face that he looks like a Russian (he doesn't look like one whatsoever).
I love her "I'm the boss!" expression at 36:53 of the 3rd movement, hehe... Spectacular performance! Hilary as always offers a flawless execution and this beautiful violin concerto was not the exception! She's amazing!
Yes! Hillary is often not shy about leading the music, the orchestra, in tempo or feeling to where she feels it should be going. I wonder if she has an agreement with the conductor ahead of time about these kind of things, I have a feeling that she does and that the conductor has a responsibility to know the tendencies of the soloists. Her sense of interplay with the orchestra is so excellent and rare to see that I hope that people are noticing that as well because it is a true collaboration and sharing of inspiration in the moment that we are witnessing in the moment. The first time I saw her perform there were two things that stood out that don't always show on videos, that she moves her body with the music from the feet up is if she is slightly dancing, also that she turns and listens to different sections of the orchestra intently when she is not playing shows that she is also listening that intently when she is playing and that you can see and hear that connection very vividly is also apparent.
@@TiqueO6 I agree about the moving, or "dancing"- to me it seems that in the more intense passages, she gets her tone almost out of her legs, like a javelin thrower or something of that nature. I don't play the violin, but it sure looks lime a full-body exercise.
Funny I had never seen the video but every time she got to that part I would think ‘Hillary takes command!’ , which I think alludes to a book about Grant. She’s wonderful.
She mentioned in one of her interviews that she often has a "conversation" with the orchestra during her performances to see how she can push them with her interpretation of the pieces. You can really appreciate that interaction here! Just lively and amazing
@@WilliamScharf There was never a time when there were so many top violinists. And by that I mean of course not only virtuosos, but violinists who are also great musicians. I don't have a strong favorite for the Brahms concerto (among the old masters that would be David Oistrakh). I listened to fragments of HH's performance and it is without a doubt one of the absolute top executions. Otherwise, the list of top violinists I like very much is long. My overall favorite is Shoji Sayaka. Others I like particularly much are Julia Fisher, Vadim Repin, James Ehnes, Itzhak Perlman, Francesca Dego, Midori, Sarah Chang, Isabelle Faust, Akiko Suwanai and of course also Hilary Hahn.
She makes me cry. Mr. Bell and others don't. When she plays one doesn't think about how well she can play, but rather how beautiful Brahms' Concerto is. And not even THAT, just wallowing in the glorious sound of the music! It's as she's not even there, she the music!
CK, I think the mighty Brahms would be flattered by this performance, and by your reaction to it. I say mighty because I love him so. He would have never considered himself mighty, hence his mightiness. His music is laced with humility. And I agree, its as if she has folded herself into the music. There’s a lot great players, but the ones who really soar-like this one- do so despite their greatness.
I don't like her dancing and her gestures towards the orchestra (they are totally useless), but I normally don't look at the video, only listen to the music. I like her playing very much, altough this very Brahms performance of hers sounds a bit too "disciplined" to me. I look for more heaviness and fire and all kinds of drama. But this is still an excellent performance.
this whole movement thing while playing is not something musicians do for show. most of the movement comes from feeling the music and is quite substancial for expressing rythm and dynamics. it is really hard to play energetic pieces without moving. in addition when playing with an orchestra as a soloist movement becomes the way of communicating with the conductor.
she is excellet, fantastic, marvelous. no doubt, but to say she is the 'only violinist that doens't make any facial expressions at all' is not a truthful comment.
+xbqchm That's the thing about Brahms, there is no room for interpretation. Brahms was a extreme perfectionist, meaning that with any of his work, how it's written is how it's suppose to be played. The fact that you think she is too "disciplined" remarks quite a bit on her skill
The perfection of the double stops is almost unthinkable. Such control over all of the technical stuff along with extremely well-planned articulation of the more expressive passages. Beautiful.
Such a lovely performance. Hilary Hahn is a super star and I do appreciate the fantastic violin music she creates in this performance. Brahms is smiling down from heaven at Hilary who truly mastered the piece and interpreted it with the fidelity that Brahms would admire. I love the composition and to have such an artist perform it is rather pleasing. Thank you Hilary and also Paavo Järvi an extraordinary conductor and the wonderful orchestra. Thank you all very much.
Thank you for helping us out. I'm so old that I only have time left for listening to the good bits.......so it saves valuable time hunting around for them. NoAxe
Seems like, underneath Hilary's videos, the comments aren't all just arguments about who is better than her. It's a great thing to see that all of you are just enjoying the wonderful music. I've seen too many comments underneath many other videos of violinists, where people become so critical and end up wasting their time in comment fights.
Gotta love the camera work in her performances too, no awkward angles, no dramatic effects, no up-the-nose shots and meaningful transitions between perspecives. Just the whole stage, her, her violin, and the orchestra.
Music criticism I hate on TH-cam: (1) ignorant comments about what's being played too slow or too fast, and (2) who's plays it better, who plays it worse. These back-and-forth comments could go on for a century and end up nowhere!.
Paavo and Hilary make quite the team. For me the 2nd movement is beautifully played I forget the great recordings and live concerts I have heard of this piece. It’s always worth paying attention to how an orchestra responds to Hilary’s playing. I don’t think I could ask for more from their ensemble playing than recorded here. Beautiful, nuanced, tender, filled with energy.
@@Rask0lnikov How true of all these videos. I just get lost in the music - brilliant. And the performance - outstanding. But is she better than others? How the hell would I know? I can barely play the triangle!! I just enjoy listening - wish others could do too.
We have all known people who say that they are not interested in music; it does nothing for them. That is like admitting that a piece of your soul is missing. Great art, whether it be music, painting, sculpture, photography, architecture......adds so much to life that to live without it or not to appreciate it would be no life worth living. Listening to this is an audio feast.
This conductor and the Frankurt Radio Orchestra are really impressive. Very, very tightly organized when they play......reminds me of the old Toscanini recordings. This seems to be the perfect collaboration with Ms. Hahn.
Hilary’s point must be that Joachim’s cadenza is so familiar to listeners that it is sometimes rushed by soloists wishing to show off. Here she just allows it to breathe (and show why it is still beloved beyond the notion that it is the first one for this concerto).
Dear Ms. Hahn, I think you are an inspiration to young musicians, everywhere, and for all time. Thank you for your dedication to our dear Brahms. You, and he, have made everyone very happy with this offering -- and your lovely orchestra and Conductor!
Stunning playing of my favourite violin concerto by the best violinist in the world. Hilary is my kind of woman. Impeccable manners, the epitome of class. I could watch and listen to her for hours. Sometimes I do! We are so privileged to have TH-cam, to be able to witness incredible performances like this from an undisputed genius.
Majestic. Hilary so cool and calm always smiling. Truly a great violinist. After 3 years I must add that she plays a magnificent Adagio. It seems like I am hearing it for the first time when actually the first time was about 50 years ago. How is it even humanly possible to produce such exquisite music?
I'm not a music expert; all i know is what I like. i think this performance is one of the best. The first recording I ever heard of this was Nathan Milstein, and I think he has more feeling into it than does Hilary.
The meaning of life... is found in this performance of the Brahm's Concerto by Hilary Hahn. Powerful, yet nuanced and witty, and also highly straight-forward. Just be happy that you are alive to witness such an amazing testament to the power of the human mind. I feel so blessed...
When you perform you may use your face as you choose. One is not required to include facial expressions when performing. Listen to the music or chose an artist who's face suits your taste. There many other fine violinists out there to pick from. Happy hunting and a Merry Christmas!
@@sneddypie It made great sense. It means the performance is about the collective music-making, not about an individual "star" personality. In that respect, it is among the most useful comments.
@@paulsomers6048 It's a concerto - a soloist with orchestra. The performance is collective but the roles are not equal. Brahms in his concertos has integrated the soloist and the orchestra far more completely than most others save Bach.
@@musicola7371 Of course it's a concerto with all that implies. But various soloists approach their solo role differently. Ms. Hahn's attitude is often that of a chamber musician. She always recognizes the other musicians on stage and even looks at them for ensemble purposes.
Amazing!👍👍👍My favourite interpretation of this concerto is the 2023 performance by Hilary Hahn. This interpretation is also amazing! It’s amazing to see how she has changed over time.
some moments I love from the first movement: 1:05 - this little tune played by some of the woodwinds reoccurs many times through the piece 2:56 - this intense moment, and the way the sound fades in 2:59 3:06 - the build up 4:53 - just beautiful 5:38 - something about this melody that goes on through 6:00 (also that tune i talked about earlier is being played at the end of that melody as well) 7:19 - this beautiful melody that goes on through 7:50 8:57 - this intense moment that goes on pretty much through 10:11 then switches at 10:12 to the soft melody we’ve heard before 11:51 - that i’d add this too 12:43 - building up to my favorite part of the piece 13:12 - build up to the arrival at 13:20 (my favorite part) 13:54 - the flute plays one of my favorite melody’s from earlier 15:33 - this beautiful melody again 22:00 the rest of the orchestra returns 23:13 building up to the finale 23:18 these double stops and thats pretty much it! reply with what you all think i should add
This is a performance of the highest order. A work of utter beauty. This performance is up there with those of Heifetz, Kogan and Oistrakh. I hope to hear her live one time. The tone of her violin is utterly pure. Listen to the cadenza for example. The sheer beauty of it brings tears to my eyes... The orchestra and conductor are also doing a splendid job. I could go on and on about this performance, but hey: just listen...
Hopefully you will get the opportunity to hear a live performance - I was blessed to do so just last night with Ms. Hahn and the Boston Symphony with Andris Nelsons; truly as good as it gets (and I've been around for a good many years).
What more could one ask for? A fantastic, confident and excellent German orchestra, plus this heavenly violinist. This performance was made in heaven, in both the playing of the Orchestra and this wonderful lady. At last something TH-cam has loaded which makes the world a better place to be. So many thanks.
Hiliarys' power and control particularly in the higher register is fantastic. Combined with Jarvi and the FRS the result is wonderful music making. It is also a pleasure not to be distracted by the contribution of the couturier.
Hilary Hahn performing in HD! A great violin goddess with a great conductor performing one of the divinely great works of music of Western Civilization. What a treat! Thanks.
OK. But I've heard a slightly slower recording. I think the 2nd movement in particular could be played a bit more slowly in the beginning. Towards the end of the 2nd movement, it sounds quite good really.
Matthias Holger Mieth Agreed. But don't ask these two to play slow :-) Jarvi's tempis are always quite quick and as for Hahn, well, we can listen to her Barber, 3rd mvt to have an idea of her taste for speed.
Hahn playing and the violin is a damn copy of Vuillaume's Paganini "Il Cannone". The most marvelous sound. It seems Vuillaume made a few. That is a good thing. I suggest the value of Vuillaume's violins is about to skyrocket. Who needs a Strad?
This violin concerto written by Brahms is for me one of this composer’s main masterpieces. The interpretation required of the violinist is amazing. Hilary Hahn plays her touchingly in sensitivity and beauty. The orchestra and its direction are remarkable. Bravissimo for this magnificent interpretation and recording that gives us moments of unforgettable pleasure.
WoW, she is is so certain. So on key and in touch with the orchestra. Her attitude and behaviour is of a kind I maybe have never seen before. What a woman.
The fact that she did not get an immediate standing ovation for this performance blows my mind. This is beyond any performance of this piece I've ever seen.
She is amazing! It’s true! EVERY NOTE played beautifully! I can’t stop listening, it’s so perfect. What a tremendous blessing to get to hear such great talent. Every note is Heaven sent.❤️
SUBLIME violinist! Both Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra & HH give Brahms musical melody such enrichment of resonance, phrasing, gracefulness & magical delight.
Also, let's not forget Paavo Jarvi. He has conducted many beautiful pieces right here on TH-cam. Start hunting for them, and see if you agree. Conductors really do make a difference!
+S. Schwieterman - Correct, the conductor is the essential personality in an orchestra. He/she guides conveying the sensibility and vitality to the performance.
Hilary Hahn is fantastic. This is my favourite rendition of my favourite piece of music. The tempo, vibrato, everything is just perfect for me. I've listened to so many superb violinists play this piece who just seem to try too hard to make it their own and end up making it sound quirky, slightly bizarre and with a strange flow to it. Maybe it's just me?!
+Put the lotion in the basket Actually I think she has one of the best right arms technic but her vibrato is always the same. She doesn't seem to use it in a constructive way which I very much dislike. Her sound is very much beautiful but she doesn't experience this with her heart i feel.
Coincido plenamente!
Hilary's playing is truly unique. Never a wasted note, never a single shred of the music that gets passed over or left behind. Every little detail is crystal clear
Her playing absolutely compliments Brahms's music. Brahms is simple in a way that makes it extremely complex and deep and very hard to capture successfully. Hilary Hahn's technically flawless playing and very deep interpretation takes it to whole new level.
I have heard this concert with so many great violinists, but this is the best perfomance of them all. Hilary is outstanding and simply better than the rest!
How can you compare a recording with live performances (experienced live by you, I mean)? I have attended three suberb performances of this concerto by Anne-Sophie Mutter, Salvatore Accardo and Schlomo Mintz (all in the late 1980s or early 90s). At a lower level (in my opinion) were Nigel Kennedy (because of his noisy foot stomping), Dmitri Sitkovetsky and others. I'm looking forward to seeing Hilary Hahn perform live (Mendelssohn) in Madrid this weekend (27-29 January 2017).
I can't, because I'm not compare live performances I've been to with recordings. I compare this concert with my own records (I have three versions, Perlman, Kremer and Kennedy), other TH-cam clips and on Spotify and in my opinion no one plays this better than Hilary! I was on Hilarys concert in Stockholm when she played Mendelssohn and it was amazing, so you really have something to look forward to!
After posting my commentary I expected you would say you were comparing recordings. It was I who suggested you were mixing up live performances with recordings. Anyway, I saw and heard Hilary Hahn play Mendelssohn's concerto on Saturday, 28 January 2017 and she had me in a trance and drove me to tears in the first movement. I must say, I haven't heard anyone play better than her. As far as recordings go, I've got quite a few of the Brahms concerto, including Oistrakh, Menuhin (with two or three different conductors), Mutter and Hahn. I enjoy all of them but there's nothing like a live performance with a good violinist.
@@Stam56 In the end, Hilary Hahn brought me to tears with her Mendelssohn. Everything was so perfect and so intense, live at the concert hall. The second part of the concert was way beelow standard after hearing her play. It was also with a conductor who had to step in at short notice, so he wasn't able to do much in terms of rehearsing.
I'm sure that if Brahms could hear Hilary Hahn playing his glorious music he would surely smile because she draws out all the power and haunting magic of this emblematic work

@@QUABLEDISTOCFICKLEPO Plus not a single way that beginning will put anyone to sleep.
What can you say? She is the best violinist in the world today! Just her ability to play every note with such clarity is amazing.
No, she isn't. Anyways, that is personal.
Jan Snauwaert of course it is. But what is your choice. Sharing thoughts and opinions from others for me has led to some wonderful experiences.
William Scharf
Isn't that what violinists are supposed to do?
@@jansnauwaert1785 You may now add to the list Maria Duenas of Spain.
She makes me cry. Mr. Bell and others don't. When she plays one doesn't think about how well she can play, but rather how beautiful Brahms' Concerto is. And not even THAT, just wallowing in the glorious sound of the music!
It's as she's not even there, she the music!
Chris K very well put.
Agree!
I agree too!
Hilary foregoes so many violin frills and indulgences, , leaving only incredibly interpreted master works - #discipline.
She is the only violinist that doens't make any facial expressions at all, she just express everything in the music!
She makes facial expressions, they're just miniscule. Her brows were furrowed for the last 2 or so minutes of the piece.

Hahn is such a goddess. I could watch/listen to her for hours. So mesmerizing!
They are waiting for one of the practice rooms to free up.
I like how Hilary Hahn enjoys the rest of the orchestra. I think you don't see it very often.
And much of the time, the orchestra she's playing with visibly enjoys her playing, which you certainly don't see all the time. 😂
Genii.
Imagine how amazing the sound of a full orchestra must be when you are right in front of it. That is how Hillary hears the piece being played.
This conductor and the Frankurt Radio Orchestra are really impressive. Very, very tightly organized when they play......reminds me of the old Toscanini recordings. This seems to be the perfect collaboration with Ms. Hahn.
The German way of getting things done.

Hilary Daimyo!
Thy majesty, may thou through thy benignity and benevolence teach us, poor men, the art of mastering the violin.
The first movement cadenza gave me goosebumps. Interpretation and phrasing is superb.
Hilary’s point must be that Joachim’s cadenza is so familiar to listeners that it is sometimes rushed by soloists wishing to show off. Here she just allows it to breathe (and show why it is still beloved beyond the notion that it is the first one for this concerto).
Thank you twoset for introducing me to this incredible woman!
Dear Ms. Hahn, I think you are an inspiration to young musicians, everywhere, and for all time. Thank you for your dedication to our dear Brahms. You, and he, have made everyone very happy with this offering -- and your lovely orchestra and Conductor!
You are right. Inspiration to the young! And for us, poor mortals...

There's no "I" in Orchestra... No "she" either...
@J. Larsen whats your point, your comment made literally no sense

Sheesh, that first movement. Hilary and Mr Brahms had me in literal tears.
I think this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard - played superbly by orchestra and violinist Hilary Hahn
Amazing!👍👍👍My favourite interpretation of this concerto is the 2023 performance by Hilary Hahn. This interpretation is also amazing! It’s amazing to see how she has changed over time.
Dynamik,Esprit, Liebe, Seelenleben, jede Note ist authentisch, wirkt bis ins Innerste. Bravo Hilary Hahn und allen Musikern, auch Dirgenten.
some moments I love from the first movement:
1:05 - this little tune played by some of the woodwinds reoccurs many times through the piece
2:56 - this intense moment, and the way the sound fades in 2:59
3:06 - the build up
4:53 - just beautiful
5:38 - something about this melody that goes on through 6:00 (also that tune i talked about earlier is being played at the end of that melody as well)
7:19 - this beautiful melody that goes on through 7:50
8:57 - this intense moment that goes on pretty much through 10:11 then switches at 10:12 to the soft melody we’ve heard before
11:51 - that i’d add this too
12:43 - building up to my favorite part of the piece
13:12 - build up to the arrival at 13:20 (my favorite part)
13:54 - the flute plays one of my favorite melody’s from earlier
15:33 - this beautiful melody again
22:00 the rest of the orchestra returns
23:13 building up to the finale
23:18 these double stops
and thats pretty much it!

And that superb violin into the mix!! What a combination.
That Frankfurt audience is always very reserved at first. After a while their enthusiasm kicked in.

+Jonny Mauser I almost agree. Who do you like better for this Brahms in particular?

Her playing absolutely compliments Brahms's music. Brahms is simple in a way that makes it extremely complex and deep and very hard to capture successfully. Hilary Hahn's technically flawless playing and very deep interpretation takes it to whole new level.

2. Adagio - 24:10
3. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace - 32:16
