Practice THIS to stand up from low surfaces with ease

- Those low surfaces 😖
It is so common, especially with arthritis to have difficulty standing up from lower surfaces like toilets, lower couches and chairs 🪑
One of the reasons for this is the degree of strength it requires from your thighs primarily ☝🏽
One of the best ways to master standing from lower surfaces is to simply practice. But you have to do it in a way that sets you up for success ✅
There are many other ways to help strengthen the thigh muscles (quadriceps) as well. But if you can get into the habit of practicing 10 repetitions of these everyday- standing from lower surfaces will become easier 💪🏽
Keep working to lower surfaces as you feel more confident and are less reliant on your arms 🙌🏼
Many members of Adventurers for Life- my arthritis workout membership- are tackling lower surfaces with ease due to the extensive strength they’ve built up in the right areas 😍
If you’re looking for more ways to strengthen so daily life becomes easier and the doors to adventures open with osteoarthritis- head to the link in my profile or go to keeptheadventurealive.com/start to get started ‼️

I love the way you not only tell us the WHY we can't do something - the quads need to work harder when the knee is at this advanced angle but you tell us what to do to fix it, at varying levels. I find that being told helps me realise that I'm not broken AND that the easy level I have to start at will be just temporary, just until I am stronger. A HUGE Thankyou from Australia.
Yes this is exactly right!
There was a time when I couldn't get up from a low surface and if I accidentally fell on the floor (getting things from the fruit bin in the refrigerator), well that's where I stayed 😅. And there was no way I was able to do a proper squat. But with practice doing squats, I got really good, quickly. I've had both hips replaced since I started doing squats and as soon as my left hip finishes healing, I'll be right there doing back at it. 😊
I agree! I hate it when people tell me to keep doing it because it’s right! Thank you!!
love how you present with no extra
time and clear explanations. Also, thank you for speaking to us as if we’re intelligent. Some just act as if we’re children. Very refreshing to watch and listen to your instructions.
I appreciate that!

😎 SS 71-year-old disabled person I'm going to try that I think the standing and sitting is what I need most it's scary when you fall
Very scary when you fall n will do everything to keep from doing that!
I am 61 broke my ankle last year and despite being very active up until then, I had to sit around a lot and keep my weight off it and omg my opposite knee has took the strain and I can't believe how much muscle strength I have lost and find getting up off low seats difficult!!! 😮 I am going to put your leg strengthening exercises in to a routine for daily practice because I am absolutely desperate to get my muscle strength back, I have also had repeated ankle strains so I need to strengthen those too. I used to be a runner and fitness fanatic and ride horses too. Thank you so much for your advice. 😊
That is really very helpful, thank you🤗
Welcome!
Is a preschool teacher stumbling on this, it's interesting. I am sometimes sitting on a kids chair for prolonged amounts of time, and getting up can be difficult. I will try this!
hope it helps!
Great advice. Gives us older folk hope for a better life. Thank you 👍
You are so welcome! You got this.
I tried ten "stand up and sit back down " and I completed them !! Yahoo! This is with 2 total knee replacements. It's a big physical and mental accomplishment for me.
Thank you for your help.
Now I need to trust my new "fake knees" and practice getting up off of the floor. That would be another accomplishment
Thank you sooo much ❤
Any time!
Yep. Been using a toilet extender since November 2022. Now I’m doing “sit to stand” and squats and I use that same blue AIREX pad. Sometimes 2 of them. Public toilets are too low.
I’ve been taught a few different ways actually - leaning forward - sliding your hands down your thigh - like you’re playing shortstop and stand up. But sometimes - I can’t and go right back down - so I guess in a sense - I’m doing the “partial sit to stand” haha.
If you lift the level of the seat, remember to use a small step to put your feet up while defecating, trying to defecate sitting rather than squatting makes it harder.

I have lost a lot of muscle mass in my legs in the last 5 years due to diabetes medication. I am only 63, but feel like an 83 year old trying to stand up from a toilet or chair and while going up and down steps. I am going to try these exercises to see if I can get some strength back.
This young lady is a true gem.

Standing up from a chair was one of the tests my physical therapist would do to see if I was getting better.

I have had two right knee injuries that cause me to have accelerated the symptoms of no cartilage! Now I need to build muscles around my knee. Any other suggestions?
You are awesome! I will do your exercise until I can build up!
I used to just sit in a squat position on a step stool and I was so comfy, it was what I preferred and now it hurts and I want it back! More suggestions please!

You are so welcome!
Thank you. I DO hv this difficulty.
You're welcome!
Y are the best help thanks❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
I have to exercise it mor often.
TOTALLY! I can get up from most things, can get down no problem, but if I go onto a short stool or the floor, I have to manoeuvre around until I can haul or be hauled up again. Mine seems to come from my hips though, the front of the hip bone specifically across the lower abdomen. My knees are fine.
What a beautiful, clear solution for me as I age
You're welcome!
Thank u 💓 💗 💖

There are also some wonderful focused exercises to speed up the process of strengthening these key muscles!
Thanks for sharing. ❤

I am 5’9’ tall and I find it can be challenging trying to get up from a too low of a position. The shorter you are, the less difficult it is to stand from a lower position.
Many thanks for your guidance. May I ask you if you would like to give some recommendations to help or cure the problems with pain in the lower back area and release the nerve causing… I would be very grateful with any advice, sincerely C.M.
