      @@AvocadoTalk Last year I tasted a GEM from the store and I think they picked them too soon. It was very nutty but the oil content was not very high. I think they pick them like they are a Hass and that is too soon in the season. Yours looked more creamy then the ones I had from the store.

      Pros and cons for both but you can't go wrong with either imo. It's tough to choose between the two but I tell people if you got the room, get both. For most backyards, gem is probably the way to go.

    Hey REM - Both varieties looked good. Very exciting to see them producing. I just started feeding my fruit trees yesterday with this brief up tick in the temps and Spring approaching - although we are expecting rain Tuesday and Wednesday. Still looking to add a Jan Boyce and Oro Negro to my collection. Thanks for the update!!

    • @AvocadoTalk
      @AvocadoTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AvocadoTalk Timing it with the rain was my thought as well. I know where you can order an Oro Negro from a nursery in Florida. They have 1 gal pots. But with shipping it would cost around $65. I figured I"d hold off and see if I could locate something here in CA.

      @@AvocadoTalk That's interesting. The host on Fruitful Trees raves about the Oro Negro. I've also watched a video from an avocado grower in Florida where he sampled a Monroe and an Oro Negro and definitely preferred the Oro Negro. But I think the Oro Negro is a slow grower and maybe is alternate bearing. I think it would be wise for me to order some Oro Negro avos from Florida and sample them before starting a tree.

    Man, mine lasted 3 months longer hanging. Idk when to pick them. They didn’t get soft at all, didn’t change color. But man it was great! Also my seed was more round, my peel test didn’t peel like yours though. I only got 3 this year and its already flowering pretty good.

      It's just going to accelerate, I think for both of us it will set more fruit this year. According to my chart Feb-Oct but I think it's really based on when the tree sets fruit. Going to be a good year, good luck!

    Full disclosure, I am a Commercial GEM and HASS grower. Not knowing when you harvested your fruit, it would make a difference. GEM mature a bit later than the Hass, say Hass in late February and GEM in May, does not sound like much of a difference but it makes a huge difference. You would find that if you harvested them in late September you would find the GEM would eat very well and the Hass would be very thick, chalkiny. Try them through the year and I believe you will really enjoy the GEM. These are recommendations for trees in Southern California,

      Thank you so much for the feedback. I plan to hold the fruit a little longer this time since I have more this season. I hope the flavor improves since I currently have 5 GEMs in the ground as of now. The first one I tried I picked when the skin started to turn black on the tree and I didn't want to loose it to a squirl. Plus the tree was very young so we'll see if it improves going forward. Thanks for watching!

I like to eat it with sugar or make avocado smoothie. What part of S. CA are you? If you don't mind and if your close I would like to visit you and learn more from you.

    Hi REM I like avocados too but I can't I dentify my planted varieties here in philippines.
    Do you have problems with cross pollination?
    My avocados cross pollinates and the varieties I expect dont turn-out.
    I have round varieties when planted besides long-necks and when they bloom flowers the same time the round-varieties all turned long necks.
    Some varieties aint affected like purple varieties stay purple. While some of my green varieties turns purple.
    Do you have the same experience REM? I have seen your avocados planted beside different varieties.

    • @AvocadoTalk
      @AvocadoTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ralph, new varieties are made everyday as soon as somebody grows an avocado from seed. To ensure you get a variety that you want, it must be grafted. If you're ever in Southern California, I'll be happy to give you some.

    Thank you for your evaluation. Lots of room for discussion here... For example, one fruit. Another is "Juvenile fruit" another is skin color, another is the season of maturity, etc. So, I try to share with growers and professionals in the industry that there is NOT a fruit in the fruit kingdom that changes color from green to yellow, orange, purple, salmon, red, etc that is NOT mature! The color change is a sign of maturity. It's post-harvest 101 and yet the experts don't talk like this... Anyway, if any of your black-colored fruit begins to change color this is a sign that the fruit is mature and will ripen! So, your GEM completely followed the rules... Season of maturity of GEM is typically a little later than your harvest date although technically you met the requirements of the commercial release date for 11 ounce fruit, size 40, after 21 Jan 2023. But, the reason you did was likely due to the juvenility of the tree. And that all the plant reserves went into producing just one fruit...... So everything was advanced....

    • @AvocadoTalk
      @AvocadoTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gray, Totally agree with your assessment. I think it could have sat on the counter for a couple more days then it would have ripen just a little more. Overall enjoyable and looking forward to this season. Thanks for watching!
