Thank you for this video! I am an illustrator that is working on 13 diff avo variety representations for a cookbook. Finding high quality image reference with reliable details on each variety has been tricky. I love the natural light, multiple fruits to show diff in shape/size spectrum, the comparative varieties in the shot and discussion on the color/texture specifics. Thank you again!

Greg, thanks for posting! Just yesterday I was looking for a Nabal video on TH-cam! So how timely this is - I was thinking to myself yesterday when is Greg going to do a Nabal video 😀?. That is one tree I’m looking for in 5 gallon! Gary Gragg is selling them right now in 15 gallon at his nursery in Richmond near Oakland but they are super super expensive. Do you ever sell trees or cuttings for grafts of any varieties? It would be very fun to talk shop sometime when I’m in Vista at moms. I have a small grove in East Hills of San Jose in SF Bay Area and trying to fill out my collection. It’s humble amount of 11 varieties but growing. I keep telling my wife it’s the last tree but I keep adding more. Our climate is similar to the hills of Escondido and I’ve been having good results for being in Northern Cal but it’s a struggle in the beginning when the trees are young. I grew up in Vista and I have trees down there as well on moms 3 acre homestead. I planted a few years back for her some Reed, Sharwil, and Hass and they are all kicking ass right now. Originally our Vista property was an old avocado orchard but was VERY old and in early 1980’s when I was a kid we bulldozed all the trees and planted only 3 Hass , 2 which are still producing heavily 30 years later. So finally I’m trying to build out that orchard in Vista as well. Only issue in Vista is my mom keeps bitching about the water bill but I keep telling her to let me keep adding avo trees and I pay the water. 🤑. My brother has about 100 Hass in Riverside on an old 4 acre residential property he recently bought near the UC but they are struggling due to neglect and he had to stump many of them . He lucked out bc he got grandfathered in with gauge canal water access at agricultural rate even though he is on a residential property. Our whole family is pretty OCD with Avos!!!! It’s Just a hobby we’ve never sold any. Can’t tell you how much I appreciate every single video you have put out! Your enthusiasm and depth of understanding is to be applauded.

      Hi Pat,
Cool coincidence! I don't sell avocado trees or budwood; I just try to connect growers to good sources of them: gregalder.com/yardposts/where-to-buy-an-avocado-tree/
I'll be sure to put together a post on my website and success of avocado budwood soon.
Eleven varieties is more than a humble collection! I can relate. Just yesterday I bought two more trees that I really don't need. I don't know even know if I have space for them.
Water is key with avocados down south here. Wish I had a quality well or special rights. Let me know when you're visiting down this way.

Hi Pat, I live in Hayward, CA in Sfbayarea. I also and collect avocado trees. I have a 12-15ft tall Holiday that's starting to produce this yr. Also in the ground, I have 3-4ft Nabal and Nimlioh, Reed, GEM, Sir prize & lamb Hass. I recently added 2-3ft Queen Avocado. I have several seedlings that I plant to graft over with some of my varieties.

I love Nabal but Cannonball avo is larger and taste likey similar and Cannonball takes cold better by 2 or 3 degrees, cannonball is mostly grown in northern cal, but its starting to be grown in southern cal. Cannonball avocado fruit has more flesh to eat seed of nabal takes up alot of space.

I know you do, Frank! That's why I'm trying to add a few more these days. Just on a Nabal note: it is susceptible to persea mites, grows vigorously, and has a B type flower.

Greg, I’m looking for a great flavor/texture eating quality type B. I’m deciding between the two? I’m in NorCal. Which would you recommend? Would Sharwill be more productive? Thank you!

Hi Eva, The best eating type-Bs that I know are Nabal, Sharwil, Edranol, Fuerte, and Sir-Prize. All of them can produce acceptably, but none are reliably as productive as many type As.

      Hi,
All of the avocados shown in the video were grown in the USA, in Southern California. The Lamb and Reed varieties both originated in Southern California, but as I mentioned in the video the Nabal originated in Guatemala.
Cool that you are in Russia and love avocados!

      Nice!
We don’t grow avocados in Russia, but there are imported. It became very popular last years) my favorite is Fuerte and I think in California it is even better than our imported stuff. One day I will make money and fly there to try⭐️

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I hope you get some good Fuertes in Russia sometimes. I know it's possible despite the distance from where they're grown commercially. They grow amazing Fuerte avocados in Spain. One of the best Fuertes I've ever eaten was actually a Fuerte grown in Spain and imported into South Africa; it still tasted wonderful there in South Africa after having traveled so far.

      Hi Lex,
First look into the CRFG scion exchange in LA or Orange County. And look for a source at Tropical Fruit Forum too. For details see this post I wrote: gregalder.com/yardposts/where-to-get-avocado-scion-wood/
But if you have no luck by February, get in touch with me through my website.

You might also try Laguna hills nursery if you live in socal as they frequently have obscure varieties for sale in spring. No sharwell or Jan Boyce but they have others like don gillogly and an Israeli seedling from Fuerte and I think they had nabal last year.

I wouldn't know where to buy Nabal avocados to eat either. I can't remember ever seeing them at a farmers market or anywhere else these days.
The tree where I got these Nabals is now stripped for the year. I can try to connect you with some next summer.

@@spinnordoctor I already have a nabal tree but it's not fruiting yet. Maddock nursery in escondido/fallbrook, you can get a 5 gallon nabal for $29 and a 15 gallon for under $60. If you are in for a road trip, go to maddock. Last week, I met a guy from oakland rented a van to drive down to san diego to buy avocado tree.
