30 Subgenres of Techno (with examples)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 มิ.ย. 2024
- In this video I will show you all 30 genres of techno (technically there are more than 30 subgenres, because all the subgenres have subgenres themselve and also I left some techno genres out because i thought they are too similar to others or because i thought they arent worth mentioning in this video. But essentially those are all Techno sub genres). I also tried to explain every of the subgenres of Techno very briefly. I hope i didnt trigger anyone who is a fan of a specific subgenre because I said something wrong or anything like that, if thats the case please let me know in the comments!
Also Please let me know what is your favourite Techno Subgenre! Should I make another one of those videos for House Subgenres?
Edit: I made another one! Check out the 30 Subgenres of House Music: • 30 Subgenres of House ...
The next free sample Pack is coming out next week btw, so dont worry :P This video was more effort than expected so i didnt have time to do the video, but the samples are already waiting to be featured in a video!
Important Note: After Feedback from People who probably know more about Techno than me: This video lists the subgenres of Techno AND Hardcore. I counted Hardcore as a subgenre from Techno since it directly evolved from it. Looking back now that was probably not the correct decision, but in the end its only a matter of definition. I hope I didnt confuse you too much. Also I forgot Ambient Techno.

30 Subgenres of House: th-cam.com/video/VWxeD3u44yI/w-d-xo.html
Also, important note: This video lists the subgenres of Techno AND Hardcore. It's also missing genres and some generes might need further clarification. I'm already working on an updated better version of this video, and will update you once that happens.
btw big room is house
Im a German and we don't say Berlin Techno, we say Underground Techno.
Underground technically just means that it's not mainstream, I wouldn't necessarily call that a genre
Finally someone who included the good stuff. Nothing better than Industrial or Berlin Techno ❤
100% agree. Industrial and berlin techno has such a nice dark rumble to it
Those are always included in these lists.. literally one of the most mainstream techno genres these days
not noisecore
Schranz all the way
Totally agree. I don't care if it's commercial.
"gabber was on a mission to find the most hard hitting kick drum in existence"🤣🤣
gabber is one thing for me and thats fun time with my freind in the netherlands and people trying to sell me xtc
My favorite kind of Techno would be a combination of Acid and Industrial Techno with the heavy and dark beats as well as the speed of Hard Techno or Schranz.
have you found an artist that encapsulates this?
@@sadikkarout9260 I have never been good at remembering names of artists. But I guess the late '90s and early '00s were the years in which the genre had its peak.
I have a 2 CD mix album with Hard Techno from Sven Wittekind, which comes close to it, but it's not entirely spot on.
There is one DJ who very much impressed me with some of his style he used in the first half of the '00s. He called the style Tech Dance, which is sometimes a variety and sometimes a combination of Hard Trance, Hard House/Dance and a pretty fast variation (just slightly slower than Schranz perhaps) of Techno with some influences from the more retro style of Acid and Industrial Techno. His name: Yoji Biomehanika. He's not a typical Techno specialist, but back then he came close to what I really like.
I remember listening to a live radio broadcast of Sensation - The Black Edition in 2004, held in the current Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. I was waiting for a Hard/Tech House DJ to play, who was called DJ Luna. And after him there were a few Hardcore DJs in the lineup. But then, just before Luna, this Japanese DJ unknown to me came, and after just three songs in I was just like: "Oh my God! Okay, forget Luna, because this guy is DA BOMB, man!" The music isn't exactly matching what I mean, he was really good back then.
This is actually very informative! Good job
Old man here trying to learn.... thanks so much for this
As an umbrella term, it makes sense for me to see Hardstyle within Techno. By the way, in this video what's been given as an example is clearly Nu Hardstyle. Early Hardstyle is rather different and I find it a lot closer to Hard Techno for example. Many playlists mix both. As a side note, I don't really appreciate what characterizes Nu Hardstyle - but it's what the most successful producers from the early scene have been doing for years now.
I find the similarities between genres quite a subjective thing, and so there's room for many possibilities, especially as music keeps evolving. Nice selection!
wow I had no idea Schranz was the techno I liked... never even heard of this term
Called Hard Techno too... But here is different
Klangkuenstler aka the king of Schranz. If you like his stuff you like schranz
The song displayed in this video as Schranz is nowhere near the actual genre.
@@tenkobar Yes you're right. I would say hypnotic techno better fits track #18.
Hardstyle = techno , made me cry 😭😭😭
Don't worry I'm gonna make an updated version soon XD
I usually separate hardstyle from techno
Look fake but is totally real for some sh*t
Hardstyle is evolved from hard techno, you can listen from old qlimax anthem from 2003
th-cam.com/video/NtpOwthjZOE/w-d-xo.html
@@donit. the updated video should mention it like "retard techno" or something :)))
please make more of these, they rock!!! thank you!!!
Thank a lot :D I'm currently working on one for Dubstep and I'm definitely planning on doing some for DnB and Breakbeat too!
From that video I finally know that schranz is my type of music.
Found Klangkünstler and went on a set of him. Best „raving/clubbing“ experience i‘ve had so far
Same here, I went to a showing out in Berlin and was astounded. Klangkunstler is definitely one of the best in the industry
Me too went to Klangkünstler as my first rave and it was so fucking good.
these videos are so dope. i learn so much from them
appreciate your work, thanks
As for Tribal Techno. Techno came from the house scene, or better yet was the idea of a hand full of people who wanted to create their own brand of house music that also reflected the drap and monotone scenery of a machinated production facility, based on the decline of Detroit's automobile industry. Forlots of sub genres of house and techno it makes sense they share similarities.
That, and a lot of Detroit techno was inspired by Kraftwerk and similar early pioneers of a more mechanical sound than disco.
tecnobrega nessa lista me pegou KKKKKKKKKK
this deserves way more views. great video!
thanks :) I'm gonna do a remake soon though, since theres still room for improvement...
I wanna do 2 examples per genre and more accurate descriptions
This information is gold, thank you very much
Thank you - my second viewing. Saving for future reference
Damn what a start into the video :0
Amazing video!
Great job, thank you!
You did good here. B+
LOL I just loved that u considered tecnobrega in the video hahahahaha and yep, the lyrics won´t make it better, it´s actually called tecnobrega bc it has old dance music elements and beats over the "brega" genre lyrics. Great videos dude!!
LOOOOOOL, TECNOBREGA FOR LIFE HAHAHAHAHAHAH awesome, thks for the list.
thank you for making this video
I think Tech House goes more into the House direction than Techno
yeah maybe, it's kind of a hybrid. But I included it both in the subgenres of techno and also in the subgenres of house.
depends on the track
Bro Im from Brazil, and in my opinion TechnoBrega isnt Techno. I dont know whats the definition of Techno, thats my opinion because Techno Brega has a totally different public, its the kind of music our uncle would dance with our aunt in a sunny beach at Brazil, brega = corny. BTW thanks a lot for this video, really nice job.
I almost died laughing when I got to the technobrega.
TB is to techno as Ice Cream Truck Music is to Polka, etc.
@@jun.iormanhaessame 😂

So good. Thank youuuuuuu
Superb Video! You have to make a follow up on this with what DJ is known for what perhaps, was very informative. Thanks!
I'm already planning on making an updated version with more and more accurate information, will probably still take 1 or 2 months, but it will definitely happen
awesome video thank you a lot !
Glad you like it :D Stay tuned for tomorrow where I'll release a video about all House Subgenres
Thanks for your work ❤️
Some of the examples can't be classified as techno because they don't share the elements, the intention, the history or even the way they are produced like: Hardstyle, Happy Hardcore, Tech-house, Cybergrind, Trance-core, Frenchcore, Speedcore, Indrustrial Harcore and Tecnobrega.
Others can HARDLY be classified as subgenres of techno: Big Room (Not the EDM style but the techno-Big room style) , breakcore and Gabber.
But thanks to this video i discovered the name of one style i love Schranz
I mostly agree with you, but the (happy) hardcore and gabber style has been around since the late 80s, so it's wrong to say those (sub)genres don't share the history with techno
also, try hards (🤓) will tell you sewerlst isn't breakcore, but actually atmospheric drum and bass.
But at this point fuck knows, distinguishing edm genres is a pain I can't be bothered with at this point.
So first no. Hardcore other name is hardcore techno. For some people techno was too slow so they created the faster son hardcore (hardcore techno). It's from the same roots.
8:57 best one out there, love Dr. Peacock and frenchcore in general
I love your work, make a video about melodic techno!
thanks man, i'll consider it :) either melodic techno or house is next
excellent video.
One of the most important subgenres of Techno was missing: Ambient Techno
and some corrections, the song you put in the Breakcore section, is by Sewerslvt, a Drum n Bass artist, not Breakcore
Some Breakcore artists would be Venetian Snares, Alec Empire, Goreshit, Igorrr, Bogdan Raczynski etc.
Cybergrind wouldn't put it here as it is more focused on Hardcore kicks and more realistic percussions with the more aggressive aspects of Grindcore (a subgenre of Hardcore Punk, Crust Punk). Some examples of Cybergrind would be bands like Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Libido Airbag, The Berzerker, Whourkr, Mulk, etc.
Nortec is a musical subgenre that was created at the beginning of the years 1999-2000 in my city (Tijuana, Mexico), the name derives from the same group that gave rise to this particular musical subgenre "Nortec Collective", its main characteristic is the combination of elements of electronic music (Techno, House, Downtempo) with instrumentation of regional Mexican music ("Banda Sinaloense" and "Norteña") processed by means of samples
I have 2 albums of this musical subgenre (Nortec) on my youtube channel, in case anyone is interested
damn your right, I honestly forgot about Ambient Techno. I'll put it in the description.
akschually
Sewerslvt is absolutely breakcore
@@gabe257r6 No, it is not
Sewerslvt doesn't meet the characteristics of Breakcore, I think that would be said by someone who doesn't listen to Breakcore much.
@@boardstechre0964 I listen to breakcore and Seweslvt is definitely breakcore and also I'm a DnBhead
thank you for this pretty informative and useful, I studied a bit sensei :)
Glad you like it :D stay tuned for tomorrow, I made another one about House!
okay now gl me remembering what are the differences between each one
I‘m still waiting for one of these lists to include hardtekk
Acid, Hardcore, Berlín, industrial, Dub and Gabber
Thanks finally managed to pinpoint my style. I am a Deep melodic techno, tech house, ghetto tech, Birmingham techno kind of guy.
A good old school example for Industrial Techno a.k.a. EBM (electronic body music) is Cybex Factor with "die Schöpfung".
I was unsure about EBM, but personally I would put EBM under Industrial/Goth and not under Techno
EBM is not techno
TBM is
melodic / minimal TOP 1 . minimal is very diffucult to realize .
A video of all the subgeners a melodic techno would be greatly appreciated, possibly by favorite subgenre right now
Berlin, Frenchcore and Gabber. The holy trinity of techno in my book
thank you for including sewerslvt for sure one of my favorite artits
Thankfullness
Loved that UK techno well funky
Nortec it's actually the deconstruction of the norteño and banda music from Mexico mixed with techno. This sound originated in the late 90s in Tijuana Mexico. 10:49
9:25 you threw this in here just to troll us oldheads, didn't you 😤
missing all the freeparty sounds like tribe tribecore pumping tribe or acidcore
Informative Video but bro, please improve the soundquality if you make an update.😅
11:10 i jumped out of my chair when i heard this one i really wasn't ready for a good regis tune
cool video, i liked it. i do have one question tho, why did you feel the need to include genres like hardstyle, happy hardcore, hardcore, frenchcore, speedcore, breakcore and gabber? sure those genres might have been influenced by techno in their roots but they're very far from techno. all of those genres would fall into a category of edm called 'hard dance music', cos you know, they're hard (except breakcore because technically it's bass music but i think it's both). it's great to see someone make a video on techno subgenres cos tbh techno is a really confusing side of edm, lol.
honestly mostly because it said so on wikipedia... looking back now I have to say though it would have probably been the better decision to seperate them.
Schranz, Hard, Acid, and Indus techno FTW
i love detroit techno !!
To which Techno subgenre do the tracks "Balthazar & JackRock - There is no Tomorrow" or "D.Mongelos - Human Solution" belong?
Hard techno, Industrial techno, Berlin techno, Minimal techno ❤❤❤❤
5:08 I was waiting for the drop until I realized I was already in the drop
Haha same
Yeah Detroit Techno is of course kinda close related to house music given its birthing place and idea. The album Digital Solutions under Model 500 is Juan Atkins at his finest, showcasing how far we have come in Techno music yet we are still close to the source material. Is this love or what?
finally somebody who knows that Techno is a genre and not just what all electronic music is called
What about Post-Progressive-Acoustic-Techno-Punk? Oh wait, that comes out after SHTF. 😅
Hey good job! Can you please order the video from the slowest to fastest BPM?
why that?
So I’m looking for a song that I feel like I hear every time I’m at a tekno party. It’s just like EAS- RIP Lil Peep, I played, but it’t just ONLY those heavy kick drums, nothing else. No melody or anything. Just very deep kick drums. Any suggestions of what song it could be?
sorry, no idea
Try charlotte de witte or amelie lens tracks
Great Video! So maybe you can help me, I have the Problem that i not really find similar Songs like my Favorite: Stereo Destroyer, Miss Djax, Human Resource, Marshall Masters :( do you know wich Techno genre this track actually is? :)
I would say its Hard Groove, its a very hard version of Hard Groove, but still.
Isn't Breakcore a subgenre of DnB or is DnB in general a Techno subgenre?
You're right, its more of a fusion of DnB and IDM. IDM was marketed as "intelligent techno" for a long time though.
I don't know if its just me, but does anybody else recognise Tommy Four Seven, Ansome, Scalameriya? They have this rather unique style, similar to Birmingham techno but deep bass and dark atmosphere. I can't really place them in any of the subgenres in this video. Was wondering if they are inventing a new subgenre...
How did you make the visuals ???
I liked the part when you played the techno
hardstyle is my fav, sounds lie a bouncy ball
Really good video but isn't trancecore, cybergrind, happy hardcore, hardstyle, hardcore/frenchcore, breakcore, speedcore, industrial hardcore and gabber these aren't the whole subgenre of hardcore (techno or EDM) yes in the history of this genre techno is important but if if you just mean techno it just means techno
Yes, looking back now, I probably should have done it differently
I rarely see Ghetto Tech mentioned I love Ghetto Tech along with Industrial, Berlin, Melodic Techno hood ole Detroit Techno
I Love acid
interestinggggggg
Gabber/gabba my fave type of techno
I'm from Birmingham... never realised 'Birmingham Techno'' was a thing. I've even been to 'House of God' few times.... learn something every day! You dont meantion Tech Trance or Techno Trance or groovy techno or for that matter cosmic techno. Decent vid tho
I don’t like gabber or happy hardcore that’s made in like what 2000s cuz I’m quite weird but I’m just happy Scott brown made it for the example he’s an absolute legend I’m pretty sure he invented bouncy techno
Thanks!
Me whenever someone says I listen to "techno":
Schraaaaanz, jaman
well, right here you got between techno and hardcore, although I think you should make a guide for hardcore since hardcore has more sub-styles than house, which also I think you have forgotten to add other styles of techno that are, belgian techno (which would actually be rave or hardcore techno), Bangin Techno which would only be techno outside of its region of origin as it is, german techno, latin techno and jtech (which would be japanese techno) and italo techno, and You have also lacked peak time techno, hardgroove techno, and woky techno (which would also be known as experimental techno) and finally freetekno, which would be known as tribe, tekno and old school hardtek, and that the latter has its small variants within freetekno although its variants are very confusing!!!
and about the schranz example, i think you could have chosen between hardtechno anthem (created by viper xxi) which is remixed by boris s. and there's Party Party Party by greg notill, which by the way are both of my favorites from schranz, which also the example you took, is more for hard techno than for schranz, which also I see that in the description you have not added that schranz has certain influences from detroid techno, hardgroove techno, and industrial techno and industrial hardcore respectively!!!
and I also think that you could add hard acid, which would be the derivation of the initial acid, that is, it is its hard version of normal acid, which is also known as hard acid techno or hard acid trance, and I also think that you should have put to euro-techno that would be like its variant of the British version of techno but for only the European continuant!!!
This video is by far the most innacurate, so I'll probably redo it completely soon. I'll definitely keep your comment in mind while doing that though.
Could you name me some melodic techno subgenres please? Im searching but i dont find nothing
tbh I dont know the names, but I know that there are a lot of very different styles in Melodic Techno.
For example you can check out lables like Afterlife, Uppergrounds or Anjunadeep (mostly deephouse but also some melodic techno).
@@donit. ok thanks!
Hearing sewerslvt in this mix was a shock. Although Mr. k*ll myself is always such a lovely contrast from the rest of their hands.
Always appreciative of genre explanations to find more of the gems that are so hard to describe.
Melodic Techno all the way! Always best the best and hottest floor in the club or the festival...
Can you introduce vinahouse?
It's rather a subgenre of House than of techno no? Also never heard of that tbh, but seems interesting. Can you maybe give me two songs that you think represent the genre well? Then I'll put it in the pinned comment on the subgenres of house video.
I am the Hard Techno, Industrial Techno guy.
But i like to listen to Peak Time Techno (Berlin Techno) though :D
How would you describe daft punks digital love
Thats French House, you can check my video about subgenres of House for that

30. melodic - alright
Nice video but I never want to hear that frenchore track again
Some umbrella terms here are too close to one another. Making the whole thing rather confusing for beginners. For example, deep melodic techno with melodic techno, bunker techno too close to minimal techno, schranz close to big room techno ( add some speed on bpm); and hardcore, speedcore and even industrial core very similar. And this is why people call techno to anything and everything these days because there are so many labels.
Good that this video is trying to clarify things.
These days a different bpm for what can be essentially the same style can result in a new sub-genre.
Deep techno
What kind of music does Boris Brechya make?
Usually Tech House, Minimal Tech or Progressive (those are all subgenres of House).
Acid!
gabber(early hardcore) is not a techno subgenre. its is own genre that has influences from techno but also at least 3 different genres. hardstyle, happy hardcore and speedcore are subgenres of gabber(early hardcore). But i must say the line between some techno subgenres and early hardcore subgenres is very thin tho, just like with trance, and could be placed under both. In the end its all EDM tho xd
You're right though, I kind of mixed it with hardcore. At some point I'm gonna redo the video with more accuracy
One might say all techno is monotonous, but that one may leave now
Ghetto is the old school version of tech house?
So, Carl Cox is Berlin mostly?
Most of the stuff I know from Carl Cox is Progressive (a subgenre of house) or Tech House.
Thanks, it was very informative!
Could you please define the term 'progressive' in this context?
Do you mean Progressive as in Progressive Techno or Progressive as a term for genres in general?
@@donit. Yeah, when describing those genres you referred to descriptions like 'more progressive' (like on 2:44). I mean, does this mean more complex melodies, or structures etc?
@@Divuar It's not exactly easy to nail down, since it can mean different things in different contexts. initially it was invented when they did Progressive House in the UK and when they invented that name it simply refered to an attempt to forward the genre so to speak.
However, since Progressive House and Prog exists, Progressive also reffers to a certain musical style. So when I said that the genre is "more progressive" I meant that it has similarities to that style and not the above definition.
Prog is a pretty big genre in general, here are some examples that can maybe help you better understand what the word means (these all belong to Progressive or Prog):

Give an examples of what you like in techno
I don't know, I just like the general feel of it I guess. Compared to House music it always sounds a bit more alien and I think thats exiting. (Dont get me wrong, I like house music too)
