I think that Liquid has expanded so much in the past two decades, it's almost its own genre with sub-genres. You've got the classic style that's RnB influenced, you've got the jazzy styles, the pop vocal styles, then you've got all this deeper, moody, slightly darker style of liquid that borrows from the neuro sound design, it's close to what you called microfunk but with more of a rolling vibe to the drum kit, and more complex sound progressions.

it's really sad to see how this new style direction (modern liquid dnb) has gone too soft pop. real liquid funk/dnb is almost a lost art these days and only a smaller number of underground artists do this real liquid funk and not the modern pop liquid dnb of today, it's awful and I love the old school liquid funk style which sounds 100% better. and if you want to hear my own songs that are *liquid funk* dnb style, you can find them on my channel 🥳🍫☕🍹🍸🥂this was interesting video

@@donit.No, not both, 20 years ago for saying that dnb and breakbeat are same - you would be rudiculed. Purely technically speaking, dnb is the subgenre of breakbeat, not reverse. Everything that has broken beats is technically the breakbeat, either, the dnb, or the breakbeat itself, even the breakbeat subgenres of club music, like breaktrance.
Well, I can't blame you for adding the break into drum and bass, but you missed adding the west coast break, which started the florida break, the progressive break, the baltimore club, and the hardcore breaks that would be its revived version of hardcore rave which in turn is known as breakbeat hardcore or oldskool hardcore!!! and on the drum and bass side, you have not added technoid, halftime, footwork jungle, dubwise, drumfunk, and crossbreed!!!
Whats the difference beteen hardcore breaks and hardcore rave? I already have progressive breaks. Baltimore Club I would say thats basically just Truntabelism and falls under Hip Hop, no? Technoid falls under Techstep I'd say, footwork jungle is the same as ragga jungle, I wouldnt say Dubwise is dnb, Drumfunk is debatable, but what I heard so far that people call drumfunk was always either Atmospheric Jungle or Breakcore (feel free to give me a counter example though) and Crossbreed even though is has drumbreaks, I would definitely put that under hardcore and not dnb. West coast breaks is a good one tough.
@@donit. The difference between hardcore breaks and hardcore rave is that hardcore breaks is a revival of hardcore rave, which by the way is breakbeat hardcore (its main name, of course), which also has resurfaced since 2000 since hardcore rave It has ceased to be relevant since the mid-90s, so hardcore breaks takes influences from the original hardcore rave and adds modern styles such as dubstep and footwork and drum and bass and finally the uk bass!!!
I’ve been searching any info about the whole new trend of dnb style which I could not name… Maybe you can tell me? For example: Wingz & Koharent - Satisfy Or Cesco - Rattler Or even DMR - Guilt I think the style of these three tracks is very similar and I really love it. But I can’t help to define it by myself. Can you help me please? Anyone?
its closest name if not the exact one minimal/deep although me and many other DJs define the genre their mixing as "deep" it very often crosses paths with liquid, tech step dark step and sounds often minimalistic
@@xicyDJx hey mate. thank you for your answer, appreciate it. Before i read your reply i was searching the answer by my own and i found one interesting mention: "bristol dnb". can you tell me what it is? is it also a sort of "deep dnb" or is it a whole new subgengre?
@@LF7D_ i would say it falls under said "deep" category... sofa sound is a good example for a label from bristol that makes that kind of music a lot. Overview UK is not from Bristol iirc but also a good example Wingz for example is under even though he is from austria/vienna.
@@xicyDJx no mate, i was told that its a whole subgenre called "bristol dnb" and all those sofa sound, overview uk, 1985 music, Flexout and even Critical (o.O) are among that style lebels. so i am a bit confused now... i thought those labels are Deep/Minimal...
@@LF7D_ and what i am saying is that you can sort of put bristol dnb under the deep/minimal umbrella... if even Markus Wingz who i know personally says so... i mean its just me telling you so believe me or not... but thats my whole stance on it.^^
I thought all the music choices were great except for Neurofunk, the examples you picked did not fit modern neurofunk in the slightest. I'm not sure but I thought Neurofunk was a quite modern subgenre
I mean I'm pretty sure it already existed before 2000... but you are right that what people call neurofunk has evolved quite a bit over the years. maybe I should have also put in a more modern version of neurofunk as a seperate genre, but I didnt want to just invent terms.
@@Ossipeks I wouldnt call it dub infused just because the bass reminds of a dubstep bass. the difference to other jungle tracks is mostly the atmosphere and I think thats whats the most important thing about the genre neurofunk
for neurofunk I think that he should've picked anything from the "current value - back to the machine" album and maybe "edrush, optical, fierce - alien girl" or something like that
Neurofunk (Breakage) I don't think that's the best example you could have put there my man lol Breakage is waaaaaaaaaay too chill for neuro and hes more known for his jungle stuff. I think a better example would have been any current artist on Blackout and such, Pythius is a good example I'd say, Counterstrike is great too but that's more on the Technoid side of things which is even more aggressive Neuro basically lol as for an older neurofunk example maybe Optiv - Brainworm or Ed Rush & Optical - Chub Rub or any old BSE / State Of Mind stuff As for modern liquid it actually hasn't moved to a more pop sound, you're just not looking in the right places or the right artists, plenty of artists still doing traditional liquid today
Fair point with the neurofunk. With the modern liquid genre I didn't mean to imply that that all that liquid is nowadays. Rather I wanted to seperate the more modern varient from the classic one, but of course both still exist!
Some of these subgenres are very questionable lol, especially breaks and hardcore, even jungle was really a precursor to d'n'b as a genre, you can't just take breaks or smth that sounds like acid house and say that it's drum and bass 😃 (breakcore is also a genre entirely separate to d'n'b)
Amen Breaks sped up to about 170-175 is what started both genres, but is definitely more drum and bass than jungle which used other break samples sped up. DnB was technically first, but they grew at the same time. It's like twins. Same parents. One is technically older and they have a ton of similarities, but they also have their own backstory and personality even though they are related.
Cool concept for a video but the choice of examples for jump up and neurofunk are …. Interesting. those are some of the most popular subgenres and the examples do not capture the sound well. Based off those I would imagine the accuracy for genres I’m not as familiar with are also questionable. Also where is liquid funk? And halftime? And calling modern liquid not “real” liquid is pretty shady lmao like why is that necessary when explaining the genre
Maybe you think of more modern varients of the genres, but I think the examples for jump up and neurofunk are very typical... What examples would you have chosen? What people call liquid funk is usually either liquid dnb or microfunk. Halftime is something I would count under Darkstep, though here I think its also ok to see it as a seperate genre. And sorry if it came across that way, but I didn't intend to call modern liquid dnb no real liquid dnb, I only used the word to differentiate between it and the one that existed first. Thats also why I put it in quotes, because I wanted to emphasize that none of them is more "real" than the other.
I would usually count that under Hardcore Rave. But some people differentiate between them as Hardcore Rave being the "oldschool" genre and Crossbreed the more modern one, I think thats fair too.
@@donit.The first example of neurofunk is poorly chosen. The second is ok. Similar to Liquid, I would differentiate between old and new. Examples of new would be Prolix - Beat Down or State of Mind - Giant VIP. But all in all a very informative video!
Maybe if you see Breaks as a seperate genre, but I don't think there's any subgenre in there that wasn't at least very strongly influenced by DnB or Breaks. Regarding your alleged wrong and missing genres, it would be helpful if you could be a bit more specific there, what do you think is wrong or missing?
@@donit. Theres a genre called breakbeat that encompasses everything you call breaks. Hardcore rave is definitely not DnB. Jungle makes a bridge between Breakbeat Hardcore and DnB, but is also a distinct genre, but thats ok if you put it inside DnB genre. First Jump Up example you mention is not the old Jump Up, is actually more turned to the Nu Jump Up you later present. Old Jump Up is a subgenre of Jungle (check this one for old Jump Up: Dead Dred - Dred bass). Big Beat is a subgenre of breakbeat (The Prodigy is not DnB). Kemal - Hostile is more Techstep than Darkstep, so not a good example. A better example is DJ Hidden - The Narrators (Eye-D remix). What you call Psybreaks is actually Neurofunk, you should remove the examples you call Neurofunk and replace them by the ones you call Psybreaks. The first one you call Neurofunk (Breakage) seems more Techstep / Drumfunk. The second one (Counterstrike) seems more Techstep / Darkstep (check instead the more recent Counterstrke work, most of it is Neurofunk). Breakcore is also not DnB. It is a unique genre, more turned to Breaks and Hardcore Techno. But Drill and Bass is a mix of Breakcore and DnB. The examples you call Drumstep are Nu Jump Up. A good example of Drumstep is Rusko - Everyday (Netsky Remix). The first example you call Dancefloor is Liquid Dnb, the second one is more turned to Liquid and Microfunk. Missing genres: Halftime / Halfstep (different than Drumstep), Technoid, Skullstep, Crossbreed, Drumfunk, Dubwise, Trancestep, Hardstep (Jungle), Atmospheric DnB (not the Jungle one), Neuro Jump Up (Neurofunk + Nu Jump Up), Abstract DnB (well you can ignore this one). Check out some Zardonic stuff too, he combines DnB with Metal. I may be missing some genres too.
@@birdman8375 I agree that Hardcore Rave is more Hardcore than it is DnB, but I would say its a subgenre of both, since it has strong enough influences from both. Same with Breakcore (including The Prodigy). Regarding the missing genres: Technoid - Whats the difference to Techstep? Skullstep, Hardstep - Same as Darkstep. Crossbreed - Same as Hardcore Rave Drumfunk - Same as Microfunk Atmospheric DnB - Whats the difference to Atmospheric Jungle? Halftime - I put this under Darkstep, but since there is actually a clear line you can draw, I also don't disagree if somebody sees it as a seperate genre. Dubwise - Same As Ragga Jungle Trancestep - Usually used for either Dancefloor or Chillstep, maybe give an example of what you mean? Tbh I have no idea how you can think that my Dancefloor examples are Liquid DnB and Microfunk, they are clearly way more energetic and noisy. Also the first Jumpup example is definitely not Nu Jumpup, if you listen to the entire song you can tell for sure because of the long intro and non-modern structure. I think even the small part is a very typical example of Jumpup. I think Kemal - Hostile is Darkstep, because its more agressive and has emo and punk elements. Darkstep and Techstep are generally quite similar though. That Psybreaks and Neurofunk is basically the same is one thing I agree with, I only noticed a couple of months after making this video when I listened to the genres a bit more, that its a bit pointless to differentiate between them.
@@donit. No no no no. Hardstep is a genre of Jungle, similar to Darkside, but heavier and not so dark. It has nothing to do with darkstep. Examples are DJ SS - Black or Renegade - Terrorist. Skullstep is related to Darkstep, but much harder. Check out Synthakt - Desert Sun. Technoid is way different than Techstep, it is a mix of techno and DnB. A good example is Raiden & Current Value - RM Bleeps. Crossbreed is not Hardcore Rave. Creebreed is a crossover between hard DnB (mostly Darkstep), and Hardcore Techno. An example is Lowroller - Mixbreed Soldier, another example is Frazzbass - I Lied. Its much more recent than Hardcore Rave (I see what you mean with Hardcore Rave, it comes from Breakbeat Hardcore, but don't confuse it with Hardcore Techno, it also evolves from it, but is something completely different now). Microfunk is the same as Minimal DnB. Drumfunk is focuses on complex drum beats and has nothing to do with minimal. Check out Seba and Paradox for drumfunk stuff. Atmospheric DnD (Adam F - Aromatherapy) is drum and bass, while Atmospheric Jungle (DJ Crystl - Meditation) is jungle. Thats why I told you should distinguish between Jungle and DnB. Liquid DnB builds upon Atmospheric DnB. Halftime is drum and bass with half tempo. If it has dubstep influences, you can call it Drumstep. Otherwise its just Halftime. Here is an example of Technoid Halftime: Dean Rodell - Proximity. Once again, Ragga Jungle is jungle, while Dubwise is drum and bass. Here is an example: Juju - Skylarking. Trancestep mixes psytrance and DnB. Concord Dawn is probably the most known artist of the genre. Concord Dawn - Cloud City. Dancefloor I dont think is a genre. Maybe its dancable drum and bass, but in that case it should encompass a lot of genres. Chillstep I also dont know, but should be a genre of Dubstep, not DnB. Psybreaks is not Neurofunk. Psybreaks mixes breakbeat and psytrance. Neurofunk is a distortion of funky bass, it is also psychedelic, but has nothing to do with psytrance nor breakbeat. There are other two genres related with Neurofunk that are not DnB anymore: Glitch Hop and Neuro Hop. Darkstep has no emo or punk elements. Its just dark and heavy DnB. Known artists are Switch Technique, SPL, DJ Hidden, Donny, Katharsys, Counterstrike. Kemal - Hostile is between Techstep and Darkstep, but is not the best example for Darkstep. Old Jump up is characterised by its bassline, here is another example of Old Jump Up: Aphrodite - Stalker. Nu Jump Up started with this track: Shimon & Andy C. - Body rock. Nu Jump Up is dancable and jumpable and good for partying, and thats why it used to be also called Clownstep. Then you have what I call Nu Nu Robotic Jump Up to refer to that more recent robotic sound that is mainstream right now. It is usually bad and repetitive, and even more clownstep than before. Here is a nice example: Subsonic - The Storm.
Hey ! I think your Drumstep examples aren't the best. Drumstep is essentially DnB with same BPM but with half-step beat, and some Dubstep core elements in it. The Dirtyphonics remix of "Me & You" does have some Dubstep elements in it, but remains DnB. You really need that half time beat to call it Drumstep. Those examples aren't the most relevant examples at all. Famous Drumstep artists are much closer to the more "classic" approach of the subgenre. **Drumstep** 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and K____________S_________ **DnB ** 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and K_______S____________K________S___ Also, Drumstep is very similar to "Halftime" music in terms of tempo and drum pattern. The main difference between the two is that Halftime sounds ECACTLY like DnB, whereas Drumstep sounds like Dubstep with Halftime tempo and half step beat. Hope it helps ! Thanks for this video. The rest is really well-decribed !
Wouldn't breakcore come from breaks+hardcore while drill step is DnB+breaks? They might both end up at near the same bpm because of hardcore part, but they would be subgenres of two different genres.

it's really sad to see how this new style direction (modern liquid dnb) has gone too soft pop. real liquid funk/dnb is almost a lost art these days and only a smaller number of underground artists do this real liquid funk and not the modern pop liquid dnb of today, it's awful and I love the old school liquid funk style which sounds 100% better. and if you want to hear my own songs that are *liquid funk* dnb style, you can find them on my channel 🥳🍫☕🍹🍸🥂this was interesting video
Do you have some examples of old real liquid funk/dnb? Cheers
Atmospheric/intelligent/ambient dnb is having a nice revival right now and it’s the roots of liquid dnb, highly recommend checking some out. I love the original liquid dnb too and I think you’ll like that stuff
Some recs:
Artemis - Elysian Fields
Makoto - Wave
LTJ Bukem - Music
Future Engineers - The Silence
Arcologies - Reflections of the Mind
PFM & Peshay - Unreleased Remix
Aural Imbalance - Astral Forest
Mirage - Personal
Hope you find something you like!
Still nobody mentions rollers :(
can you tell me what subgenre is music like "Stomping Ground" - Formula or "Bands" - Jenks (UK)
very nice video
Formula is drumstep. Jenks I'm less sure about. It sounds like a mix of a modern version of jump up with neurofunk to me.
Some of these are breakbeat subgenres
yeah, its both breakbeat and dnb
No crossbreed ??
Where’d #3 go?
Where does Dubstep fit in?
I have another video for Dubstep and Garage
Can you tell me which subgenre make macky gee? I can't determine it :D
maybe jumpup?
Yes, the second example of the jump up (02:00) is similar to what Macky Gee has been releasing
I’ve been searching any info about the whole new trend of dnb style which I could not name…
Maybe you can tell me?
For example:
Wingz & Koharent - Satisfy
Or
Cesco - Rattler
Or even
DMR - Guilt
I think the style of these three tracks is very similar and I really love it.
Breakage - I N I is literally a dub infused jungle track. Very bad example.
@@Ossipeks I wouldnt call it dub infused just because the bass reminds of a dubstep bass. the difference to other jungle tracks is mostly the atmosphere and I think thats whats the most important thing about the genre neurofunk
for neurofunk I think that he should've picked anything from the "current value - back to the machine" album and maybe "edrush, optical, fierce - alien girl" or something like that
What was #3 ?
I just accidentally put the number 2 for number 3. So there are 2 number 2 now, but there isn't genre that's missing or that I removed.
Noob question, why do some people hate Jump Up?
Well I dont hate it, but maybe check out this guy music.ishkur.com/JumpUp?query=Jumpup
No artcore in this is a crime. still a solid video tho
add minimal dnb as a subgenre such as some of the 1985 label stuff like visages alix perez skeptical etc but otherwise decent video
Its wild that you didnt include belgian jump up cause that shit doesnt fit in any shape of box
Im kind surprised crossbreed and halftime aren't in this. granted it is a bit niche
do you have any examples for these?
missed halftime and drumfunk
i would have included newschool breakcore like sewerslvt or femtanyl but pretty comprehensive otherwise.
I just missed some examples of pure Drum n Bass.
Thats not really a thing, drum and bass is more of a category
Neurofunk (Breakage)
I don't think that's the best example you could have put there my man lol
Breakage is waaaaaaaaaay too chill for neuro and hes more known for his jungle stuff. I think a better example would have been any current artist on Blackout and such, Pythius is a good example I'd say, Counterstrike is great too but that's more on the Technoid side of things which is even more aggressive Neuro basically lol
as for an older neurofunk example maybe Optiv - Brainworm or Ed Rush & Optical - Chub Rub or any old BSE / State Of Mind stuff
As for modern liquid it actually hasn't moved to a more pop sound, you're just not looking in the right places or the right artists, plenty of artists still doing traditional liquid today
Fair point with the neurofunk.
With the modern liquid genre I didn't mean to imply that that all that liquid is nowadays. Rather I wanted to seperate the more modern varient from the classic one, but of course both still exist!
Some of these subgenres are very questionable lol, especially breaks and hardcore, even jungle was really a precursor to d'n'b as a genre, you can't just take breaks or smth that sounds like acid house and say that it's drum and bass 😃 (breakcore is also a genre entirely separate to d'n'b)
i thought all the jungles styles inspired dnb lol something sounds wrong here
Amen Breaks sped up to about 170-175 is what started both genres, but is definitely more drum and bass than jungle which used other break samples sped up. DnB was technically first, but they grew at the same time. It's like twins. Same parents. One is technically older and they have a ton of similarities, but they also have their own backstory and personality even though they are related.
Why does nobody ever talk about rythm???
Thats also why I put it in quotes, because I wanted to emphasize that none of them is more "real" than the other.
need belgian dnb 😈
where crossbreed
I would usually count that under Hardcore Rave. But some people differentiate between them as Hardcore Rave being the "oldschool" genre and Crossbreed the more modern one, I think thats fair too.
Some weird demo choices in there.
which ones do you not like?
@@donit.The first example of neurofunk is poorly chosen. The second is ok. Similar to Liquid, I would differentiate between old and new. Examples of new would be Prolix - Beat Down or State of Mind - Giant VIP. But all in all a very informative video!
Half of the genres in the video are not DnB. Florida Breaks? Is that a joke? Many genres are also wrong. And many more are missing.
Regarding the missing genres:
Technoid - Whats the difference to Techstep?
Skullstep, Hardstep - Same as Darkstep.
Crossbreed - Same as Hardcore Rave
Drumfunk - Same as Microfunk
Atmospheric DnB - Whats the difference to Atmospheric Jungle?
Halftime - I put this under Darkstep, but since there is actually a clear line you can draw, I also don't disagree if somebody sees it as a seperate genre.
Dubwise - Same As Ragga Jungle
Trancestep - Usually used for either Dancefloor or Chillstep, maybe give an example of what you mean?
@@birdman8375 soooo what about minimal/deep?
Microfunk is minimal dnb bro 😂
yes its different words for the same thing
@Donit you forgot Skullstep/Militarystep
militarystep? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_step
@@donit. maybe he refers to footwork.
@blackjo56 *me slient for moment to 2024 cuz he's being the smartest shit for Skullstep fans*
**Drumstep**
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
K____________S_________
**DnB **
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
K_______S____________K________S___
Also, Drumstep is very similar to "Halftime" music in terms of tempo and drum pattern. The main difference between the two is that Halftime sounds ECACTLY like DnB, whereas Drumstep sounds like Dubstep with Halftime tempo and half step beat.
Hope it helps ! Thanks for this video. The rest is really well-decribed !
This guy was bored and just started making shit up 😂😂
For example?
I think the breakcore examples are terrible, those sounds more like drill and bass
they are quite different, breakcore girl and igorrr have good examples
maybe something more distorted or energetic would have gotten the point across better, I still think theyre Breakcore though.
Wouldn't breakcore come from breaks+hardcore while drill step is DnB+breaks?
They might both end up at near the same bpm because of hardcore part, but they would be subgenres of two different genres.
