    I’m from the uk and although I’ve always loved the idea of a Tesla the MG 4 here is absurd value I ordered one in September and recently had a test drive and was really impressed.
    A long range MG 4 is £20,000 less than the cheapest Model 3 and it’s literally less than half the cost of the long range model 3.
    Hoping to take delivery in the next month - it’s my first ever electric and even my first ever “new” car so didn’t take the decision to buy lightly!

      Also from the UK that dreamed of a Tesla for 4 years..... taken delivery of my MG4 last week.... there is nothing you can tell me that the Tesla Model 3 can do that the MG4 can't that justifies nearly double the cost.

    The MG4 looks very compelling.
    The LFP Model 3 would be our choice today. However, we shelled most of our life savings on a 2018 Powerwall home storage battery, a 2019 Model 3 SR+, and last February sold the VW camper for a Model Y LR (back camping with a few luxury items). All three products have NMC batteries…they’re fine. (Same with our daughter’s 5 yr old Hyundai Ioniq 28kWh).
    In the Summer we keep both cars charged to around 50-60%…in Winter 80-85/90%. The Powerwall (on the Octopus/Tesla energy tariff) fills to 100% (grid and solar) and empties out daily. We keep testing the capacity with our home spun formula, and it still shows it’s retained its 13.5kWh usable capacity. Software management I guess.
    The M3 SR+ (2019 version) has a 50kWh battery (47kWh usable). Not big…2 thirds that of the Cupra. It weighs in at 1680kg (tested at our local garage on its first MOT), and reaches 62 mph in 5.5 secs. The driving is thrilling, aided by double wishbone suspension (same as Model Y LR). Bags of passenger and luggage space and coveted by our kids who drive it when it’s free.
    We now use the Model Y for its massive luggage capacity and hatch back, as we’re getting on and it’s easier throwing camping garbage in it.
    Both cars are incredibly practical, (as with the Powerwall…and Starlink), and hugely enjoyable to drive. The continual updates and improvements over the air while sat in the drive, autopilot and charging network can’t be underestimated…you just plug in and bugger off for a coffee…no messing with cards and apps, and the charging stops on route are calculated by the car, and updated according to conditions etc.
    When we got the Powerwall we didn’t know who Tesla, and Elon Musk were, but in 5 decades of driving (including Trucks) I’ve never known a company with such drive, innovation and attention to crucial and important detail.
    Whatever EV someone wants, it’s really worth using Tesla as the benchmark. The MG4 looks like a great solid choice, but the Cupra stands out as a style over substance, marketing exercise (which has become a bit of a plague).

    Cupra v Model3. The difference is adults with legs will not fit in the rear seats of Model3. You can comfortably park a bus in the rear seat of a Cupra.

  • @edvoon
    @edvoon ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The MG4 long range only charges at 135kW, same as the Cupra Born. Also there’s been a video that shows even Tesla Model 3s with LFP batteries will degrade faster when regularly charged to 100% frequently. Although it is still expected to have a longer lifespan. Basically if you can fit it into your budget, then Tesla is the superior vehicle. If you can’t, then the MG4 is the one for you.
    I already ordered my standard range LFP MG4. You get a pretty much “Good Enough” car for almost half the price of a Tesla or Cupra, Yet without sacrificing safety or driver assistance features.
    Not only Newspapers. Even the MG4 salesperson I ordered from didn’t know the difference between LFP and NMC batteries. But it’s forgiveable since the ZS EV only has NMC so they haven’t been trained for the MG4 yet since it hadn’t been officially announced.

    I have watched a few MG4 reviews over in UK and Ireland.
    I’m sure I heard one of the reviewers say that the Long Range battery pack will change to LFP later, just didn’t have the capacity from supplier to have both LFP.
    So by time comes to Australia in Feb/Mar 2023 might both be LFP, IF, we get the long ranger version.

    I have the Cupra, about 6 months now. Lots to like and a few very annoying niggles (especially the Haptics which are beyond annoying!).Not sure where you got your figures from, the MG4 is not 10K cheaper than the Cupra in the UK and the Tesla is a lot more expensive in the UK (even if you can get one). The Born has been out a long way before the MG4 so if there are any similarities then its done by MG not the other way around. MG is not a bad looking motor and is better value than the Cupra, but the Cupra is a better looking car. So looking forward to the BYD's coming to the UK to shake up the market and having more to choose from and hopefully prices coming down. I'd have the Seal in a heartbeat if they price it competitively. BTW; the Cupra handles very well and is very nippy, I have decent range returns and mostly motorway driving. Wont be keeping it too long but very happy overall and until the BYD's come along

    I've just looked around an MG4 here in Cumbria, England. it is being rolled out to customers now. It looks great, it's cheaper and ticks all the boxes. A lot will be sold, I hope and being a mid-sized car, it will fit into most people's street, garage, parking space. The Tesla has done the walking, Musk does the talking and it's great for so many reasons. I would wait for the smaller one to fit into my garage. The Cupra Born is really an ID3 sibling, so the hesitancy I would have is their software mess and overpriced. My current EV will do until a few more cards come onto the table. I will be looking out for the Dolphin, when it comes, hopefully no BYD sales debacle here in UK.

  • @sahar_services
    @sahar_services ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hahahah The Model 3 it is the better car hands down he says.....but also the most expensive one by far, 15.000 Euros more expensive to be more precise!!! So I don't think it is the best comparison, besides that MG4 and Born are not even in the same category. MG4 and Born are Compact Hatchbacks and Model 3 it is a midsized sedan. And again, the base Cupra Born has a 58 kwh battery pack and it is 15.000 euros less expensive then a Model 3. The 58 kwh Born it is just 150 kg heavier and it has almost the same range.

    Yesterday I found that the LFP batteries in the Tesla models are losing their capacity much faster than the Teslas with Ni Li batteries, they have the same worn at 50000 miles as a Ni-base Li battery at 100000 miles... These are the results collected by the application which survey Tesla batteries... So is not all rose on the LFP batteries...

    The battery size is of course a consideration but : weight is a killer to range. The way the Model 3 is built is shear genius and results is the lightest car in its size and power. One big feature of the model 3 is its thermal management system, no other EV manufacturer can match it presently. The model Y and and the model 3 also have the worlds highest ancap safety rating. As you can tell I am a Tesla owner.

  • @Eric76
    @Eric76 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I was interested in a concise comparison between VW-Cupra, Tesla and MG, and what I am hearing is about weight and batteries in each manufacturers respectively model. If we talk about established media outlets like WhatCar, they have said the heavy Cupra Born is their best small EV in 2022. I just think this channel is causing more ambiguity about small EV's and the producer seems hell bent on proposing that an MG and or a Tesla Model 3 2022 are superior small EV's. I would like to see producers take these EV's out for a spin and then make a judgement, rather than using their intuition and facts about the battery, weight and what Top Gear said. There are plenty who would disagree with the outcome of this type of critique in recent weeks and months this year on here.

    Excellent review. I’ve bought a standard range MG4 to replace a 2 year old MG5. I don’t need to use public rapid chargers very often as I charge at home. If I had to do high mileage, I too would probably plump for a Tesla if I had the money, but for me, with a minimum 160 mile range in winter and what looks like at least a 200 mile range in warmer weather, the MG4 is perfect. Lovely car, a few software issues on the MG Pilot now remedied and great value for money. This car is really taking off in the UK and justifiably so.

    Personally I think efficiency is a underestimated marker. How much watt per km, that’s going to be your bill. Tesla is extremely efficient and fun to drive plus you get many updates and new functionalities all the time. The tesla software value is underestimated, no other brand can match this for now I think. Honestly range, most people don’t even do 50km daily so I don’t think it’s an issue at all.

    Tesla model 3 long range is 4065lbs or 1843kg and model Y long range is 4416 lbs or 2000 kg. Cupra Born 58 kwh is 1828 kg and 77 kwh 1955 kg. So the 77kwh Born is only 100 kg more than the equivalent Model 3.

    Thanks for the comparison video. I don’t find many videos on YT compares the Born and Tesla because I’m choosing between these two. I’m in Aus and Born has just been released. Both Born and base Model 3 are almost the same driveaway price where I live. After driven both, I have to say I can’t fault the Tesla for the tech you get, the software and the design. Born was fun to drive but it felt like a normal car when I sit inside. The design is pretty much like a normal combustion car but with battery, even the screens look dated to me. Whereas Tesla, I really feel like I’m sitting in an EV with digital controls through the touch screen. In Australia, Born doesn’t come with GPS, travel assist and wireless Apple CarPlay which is a huge let down. I thought I could put up with it using wired CarPlay with Waze which is what I’m currently doing, and this set up frustrates because the connection doesn’t work sometimes and Waze sometimes doesn’t work either. The best feature I like is Tesla’s navigation system where the trip planner built in. I hate laggy phone connection. Having all that already in the car is important to me.

    I’m stuck between a model 3 and a mg4. The price difference is notable but so is the build quality. The Tesla just looks and feels more premium. Having a model Y I am struggling with justifying the additional cost for a model3. I do get that Tesla itch satisfied. I don’t need the larger space that the model 3 provides, but the panoramic top, the facelift 2023 model with refreshed interior design is stunning.
    The MG4 is a great looking car, easy to drive, and ok ish on the inside, but brand snobbery is also a factor.

    I really want to love Teslas. But the plain desert in the cabin (Style, wheel, no display in front of the driver) holds me back.
    Also one more thing to consider is the car hight. For me it means a lot to be able to see around from higher, and not to sit on the floor each time u get in. (Standard sedan vs SUV thing). In that regard both the Supra and the MG4 is closer in comfort to a SUV, hence I would almost say would need to be put against Tesla Y not the 3. Then the price goes up significantly.
    All in all if Tesla Y would be in that price range I would consider :)
    Sorry no hate, just an alternative point of view.

    We live in the UK and I have a 2019 Model 3 and it's great, I'd prefer if it were a little narrower and had a hatch - so a narrower Model Y would hit the spot. I'm looking for an electric vehicle for my wife, she likes a small cross-over style vehicle, so a Model Y is too big as far as she's concerned. The MG4 looks good from a UK roads POV, but it's Chinese and we'd prefer to buy British, EU or American. I keep telling her that the selection of EVs will get better and better but it seems to be taking so long and the selection seems to be comming from Chinese manufacturers first. 😒

    So in fact LFP even today with the current densitys has more range than Turnery because you're only supposed to use 60% of the available battery in a Turnery. Also lfp is safer fire wise. Energy density increasing in lfp .. I can't see why ternary batteries will continue much longer except for the fact that massive Investments have been in producing Turnery. The improvements in battery technology the manufacturers cannot keep up with.. they have to change their manufacturing process to produce a new type of battery.. the winners will be the ones that do this most quickly and cheaply.

    A 2021 Tesla Model 3 SR+ with LFP battery with a 54kWh capacity clocks in at 1887kg minimum weight. A 2017 Renault Zoe with a 41kWh batterypack weighs in at around 1400kg, so a Model 3 only being 200-250kg heavier is ridiculous.
    Also there is really not much benefit in having an LFP battery over a "regular" lithium battery. Yes it will degrade a bit less, but people are talking like charging to 100% and discharging to less than 20% wont affect the battery. It will, but to a lesser extend. The Zoe cant be configured to only charge to x%, so unless you stop it, it will always charge to 100%, and there haven´t been any real degradation or outright defects in those batterypacks. The LFP battery is simply just cheaper to manufacture because of the absence of cobolt and nickel. But it comes at a cost: more weight because of lower energy density.

Statistics can be bent to prove nearly anything :-) I have a friend who is not permitted to buy a Chinese car because of the ‘theoretical’ ability of the Chinese government knowing everything about where they are at any time, and perhaps the ability to shut the vehicle down should it wish to! Or to put it another way there are a number of corporations and nations who may, or may not, have more control over you now that you might hope :-) Personally, I’m not particularly bothered whether my life is governed by Russia, China, or the USA except I’d rather not be forced to be a citizen of any of them :-)

      You buy a Tesla and they dictate what you are and are not allowed to do with it.
      They can change your range over the air and restrict its power and speed on a whim.
      They punish you if you don't use the "correct" repair company (results of repair don't matter).
      You can't modify or adjust certain things on the car and Tesla locks you into their network and if you seek someone cheaper or better they penalise you.
