Great review! One thing I will say though. Lighter in the bends doesn't always mean quicker in the corners. Look at the R35 mate, the Nissan engineers were obsessed with weight when making it.. they sent it back to the design team multiple times asking for more weight and more of it over the wheels. More weight over the wheels, more traction.
I can’t wait for the tuners to get their Hands on this. Everyone always says that. Oh God, they messed up, BMW messed up, but did they really? BMW right now is the baddest out there. That’s when the majority of the people said, they messed up, oh, no, look at that grill.. I’m pretty sure that they left a lot on the table for tuners to make their brand. Insane again.
If the Devil owned a car it would be an Audi RS7 or RS6 black on black with red interior. Audi does sinister well. When it comes to their Avant models they are unrivalled.

Before watching, I’d like to point something out. People bash newer generations over things like higher weight, higher price, worse looks, lower engine displacement, etc. After people are awed by its performance and/or it depreciates to the point where they get more affordable for the average person, suddenly the entire attitude towards the car changes. As long as it drives well around corners and it’s fast in straights, does it matter? Looks are subjective anyway. If you can, then great, but most people criticising won’t buy one anyway. This has happened with objectively good cars like the 5.0 sc x351 xj, lci m760li, even the new c63 is not bad once you look at it as another sporty mercedes rather than as a c63. Let’s just enjoy the last of the ICE performance cars while we still can, because soon, we won’t be able to.
the new M5 is one of the better looking new cars from the BMW lineup especially in this touring version. I don't love it but unlike the M2, M3 and M4 I don't hate it. the weight is frankly absurd and I can not wrap my head around where it came from but I can imagine that this would help it be a fantastic highway cruiser and a mighty practical daily/commuter thanks to the large trunk. now what really interests me is their new hybrid drivetrains and seeing what they can do with some refinement over time be it in power, fuel efficiency or just messing around with different drive modes to adjust the driving dynamics and personalize.
This and the Porsche Panemera Turbo S estate are good competition. I'm in the market for a bigger fast estate, I like RS6, but the seats aren't comfortable. I want to see what this and the Porsche are like.
Great review from Rory, as usual. As for the car, I don’t understand it. You won’t buy this car for track days (the only wagon that can do it is the M3). You want a very fast super wagon; however, for this you have the 550. You will never be able to use all these hp in every day life
Given its weight, size and “hybridness” this wagon format may make more sense than the saloon. It’s become a fast, spacious tourer which is great for chewing up the miles on a long family holiday trip.
Most owners will spend the majority of their time driving this car in the city or on the autobahn. Twisty roads will be more of an exception, so how it handles on those doesn’t matter much to most people. Overall, this offers a better deal than the sedan in almost every way.
I think if someone makes a better designed grill it would look much better. That grill makes it hard to distinguish the two side of the grille plus it has that giant plastic blob at the top of the grille which could be removed and would look tonnes better
I just don't see the point in the hybrid setup... apparently it's not about performance, probably some restrictions, but Audi boosting the RS engine while BMW going hybrid is really weird. Anyways, much better looking than the 7 series, the XM and the rest of the recent design atrocities...just that illuminated grill thing 😧
Audi will go hybrid as well… there is no other choice left I am afraid. And honestly in some European countries the fact that’s it’s a hybrid makes you save 60.000 bucks and so it’s around 60k cheaper than a RS6
@Planeandcars1980 I am sure they will. My point was more in the sense that if you go hybrid, it should improve the previous car. Take new Bentley's Conti or the Porsche 911 base models. Price wise the M5 is a bargain for sure. I have no idea how they kept the pricing at this point but that's 👏 to BMW.
With the hybrid system you get in addition the instant torque of the electric engine. This makes a huge difference how you experience the car. I own an i4 M50 and it feels subjectively quicker than the M4, when you kick down the pedal.
