I'm 75 and 4 weeks post partial knee replacement - I'm finding all your videos really helpful. I can't necessarily do all the exercises at the moment but have plenty of time at the moment to watch the videos as I recover. Your demos and explanations are brilliant. Thank you for posting.
God bless is right! Many of us have incurred accumulated injuries - had jobs that required lifting, on feet for 12-16 hours-i am a retired RN who was very fit, but eventually, job injuries caught up with me! Keep up the good work!!! ❤
BRILLIANT! These are the two biggest issues I have, getting up from a chair and crawling up the stairs! I will try these exercises and pray for improvement! THANK YOU VERY MUCH WILL!! I'm a FAIL and cannot do these exercises. cannot lift my legs like that, cannot drop a hip and just too weak. Sadly, I will continue crawling up my stairs to get to the loo.
I'm not close to 65 but noticed recently one knee feels like it wants to trip me while climbing stairs. I'm going to do these exercises in hopes it will strengthen that knee. Thank you Will.
@@HT-Physiowhat does it mean if (climbing stairs) one knee literally "crunches".. l mean audibly so (l can hear it!) no pain, but.. (thisnoisecantbegood) pls do tell..
Thank you, Will, for the explanations on each exercise. I am 76 yrs old with one ankle fused and the other ankle replaced therefore finding stairs a real challenge. I'm sure in time these exercises will help my mobility. With thanks from Canada.
Fantastic! Any thoughts on more overall body bone strenghtening exercises? I have osteoporosis, but I think have strong bones in spite of low density. Have decided not to take the usual prescribed medication , but go for diet and exercises instead. I find the exercises you shared wonderful - have been doing them for 2days now😊. Really works! Bless you! My arms might need some bone strengthening excercises too if you have time to share some please. I am turning 80 in July❤Best regards, keep up your good work please!😊
Have you considered doing a short video of an exercise routine we can do with you? I’d like to see a routine for people with osteoarthritis for example. In Australia, physiotherapists have started running exercise classes as part of patient treatment before joint replacement. We have so little input from the system in the NHS.🙏
Again, Mr Harlow, you are no. 1 for even those above 65. The "sit to stand" got me movin. That exercise also calls for patience, and you know why ! - slowing down to sit is not easy. I like the exercise to strengthen the glute just before that - so dooable with minimum equipment.
That's great to hear I'm so pleased it has been helpful for you - and absolutely, it's so important to slow down and to take time to do things properly to prevent injury!
You are really excellent at helping older people like myself improve important physical aspects and your guidance is really appreciated. If you don’t mind sharing, how did a young person like yourself become interested in working with seniors?
Hi there - thank you for your comment - I started my career working in the NHS and saw how necessary preventative work is to help keep people healthy and safe. I began as a sciatica specialist, but over the years I have been able to develop my work to help support a huge array of issues which are typically faced by older individuals. I have found that lots of people feel unsupported and unsure where to begin when looking to protect themselves or looking to recover following injuries/surgery. Ageing is a natural process which we all face and I wanted to work in an area where I could offer a real benefit to my clients!
@@HT-Physio Thank you for your thoughtful reply. My parents taught me, and when I married and had children I taught them that if you help even one individual to lead a fuller and happier life, that is a truly worthwhile endeavor. You help so many address and correct problems that develop as we age ( and which many like myself were not expecting) that I sincerely hope you recognize that each of your videos is an extremely worthwhile endeavor that helps so many individuals regain our fullest happy life. Well done you👏🏾
Wow, this is really good! I just stumbled across this video. I have diabetes and kidney complications. I started stairclimbing to bring my blood sugars down. I agree with 47. Its always shown to us by young person with no pain what so ever. I'd like to see this exercise done by a much older person with extreme Arthritis like many us. You make this look so easy because you have no pain and all your muscles strong and healthy.
I've been using my stairs to do step ups, step downs and hip hikes. The latter has been useful for curbs without cutouts when I step off sideways to avoid falls into traffic. Stairs are important to maintain senior fitness for independent living,
I really love these exercises as you can really feel the legs and knees getting stronger. Just wish I knew why my outer hip hurt when bending my left leg up stairs. There is clearly an issue somewhere as i can feel my groin, glutes and hip sore when I do other exercises like glute exercises side hip exercises etc. .I am hoping everything will get stronger over time.
Wonderful direction. Must start this. I am just having trouble on the stairs. I am 79 and know I must take care for some of these movements. Thank you for such clear instructions.😊
That's great to hear - I think it's important to take the time to explain things fully so people feel informed when considering what is appropriate for them!
Just found your channel and I loved what I watched so far. Even did some exercises while watching. Now my muscles seem to be awake. great! Anyway, what I wanted to say to this video: Glad you addressed getting DOWN the stairs as well. That one is harder than getting up the stairs - at least for me.
Just the good advice I needed after a bad experience climbing 3 flights of stairs just to avoid walking in the heavy rain. Thank you for all the helpful tips you give, Will..
Thank you, I'm 68 and do have a lot problem climbing and getting up off a chairs. I haven't tried your method but happy to say it makes sense, and it's not called a miricle method that works in a minute unlike many others. There is no such thing
I had terrible knees at 50 years old . Waiting at a station I would find it very hard to get up from a seat. I was going to have operations on the knees but read that they always end up with a knee replacement get it checked out with a good physio therapist. Find a soft surface and kneel down with your bum on your heels . If you can’t go all the way place a pillow between . Sit there for a minute . Also raise yourself up to upright kneel and back down 10 times . What it does is pump the Synovial fluid around the knee cartridge. Don’t go hard on yourself just slowly push it. The next exercise is door handle squats onto a low stool.
OK they're good but my right goes down an inch and plays a very painful orchestra. Also must this be done on stair our flat ground. I don't give up but this is too much
I'm sorry to hear you've been having difficulties climbing and getting up - but absolutely, there's no quick fix, it takes time and work, but the benefits are definitely worth it!
Hi Will, this is a brilliant video on how to climb and come down stairs. I had total knee replacement surgery 5 months ago and find coming down the stairs especially very painful and unstable in the operated knee. I only discovered your video a few days ago and I have been doing your exercises since and I am finding a big improvement already. You are by far the best physiotherapist I have worked with . You have a deep understanding of your subject and you are a brilliant communicator. You explain the fundamental causes of the problem and then prescribe and demonstrate the best and most effective exercises to address the issue, and very importantly also, you explain in very simple terms how exactly your exercises work and how they will fix the problem. BONE on BONE! Exercises 3,4and 5 are exactly what I can't do! PLEASE give non load bearing exercises for quads. These exercises are good if they are done before problems arise, when you are younger. If I could get up and sit down from a chair as in exercise 5 I wouldn't be needing this! PLEASE try and imagine what it's like for us with minimal, almost or no cartilege. THANKS!

@jvelez57 I go downstairs backwards, since it's easier on my knees. You need to keep your hand on the railing. My problem is abt 80lbs extra weight. When Will says to add in a " small" weight, I just laugh, so how's 80lb, Will.
THANKS!
Me too ,it’s awful and have to hold on to railing going up or down even one step!

You want to climb stairs easily? The magic secret is to climb stairs frequently :-) I am 64, 110kg and still take 2 steps at once.
I am 68 so I go backwards climbing upstairs
Not for everyone. I climbed stairs at the local stadium for exercise and ended up with hip impingement that I’m now getting physical therapy for.
