In India we use the leaves directly in vegetables or any other dish directly as individual leaves or into a paste. Also made into powder with cumin seeds ,salt and dried chillies and eat it with steaming hot rice and ghee.Curry leaves are good for digestion and has anti cancer properties.

Luke, you have my heart. I totally agree with what you said. I’m Indian and make curries everyday, twice a day mostly. I can’t do without these curry leaves in my curries. Also you can add curry leaves while making homemade ghee. Smells divine and tastes delicious. Promotes hair growth too along with so many additional benefits. Back home we have tons of plants growing in our backyard, tender and fresh. Gosh I miss it.
I buy a pack of leaves for $0.99 at my local Indian grocers every week. I’m going to try to grow them from seeds I have bought from India recently. Fingers crossed.

Ah! My favorite....love this plant...it tends to grow very little in colder temps but loves heat n sun n humidity! I use it in tempering dal or stir frying veges. And to prune it...if it is big enough and you want it to be bushier, prune the top and you'll get a new branch from the next node.

Super excited for this video. Everyone says this tree is easy to grow, but not from seed! I just grew new trees from seeds. Took some experimenting to get them started, but even the first stem and tiny leaves have the wonderful aroma!!
I wish you would have said that there is a difference between the curry leaf, and curry powder found in markets. The powder is a mix of spices like masala, ginger, tumeric, pepper, etc.. You did say green curry, but most people will only hear curry. Always enjoy your videos!

I looked all over for a Curry Leaf Plant a few years ago and could not find it. So I went to the grocery store and found a few packs of curry leaves that had some 6+ inch stems on the leaves. I took them home and rooted them. Three years later, I have a 2 1/2 or 3 foot tall bush. Proud of that little bush, but can't help to think that it should be bigger with more stems growing out of the soil.

I'm not Indian, but I'm pretty sure curry means a "blend", which was made into a thing when British soldiers asked street vendors to whip something up. While curry leaves are undoubtedly widely used in South Indian cuisine, it is not what we know of as the curry flavor. That is cardamom, coriander, cloves, turmeric, and in Asian cuisine, coconut milk and bay leaves. You could walk down the spice aisle of an Indian market and smell each of these and easily see where they play the part. Curry leaves, despite the name, are not the main ingredient of curries. They do not smash curry leaves into a powder to make curry. They do grind cloves into a powder with a pestle, however.

This is mostly used in Southern India only. Northern Indian curries don't usually have this... we use significantly different spices. In my northern state we call this "sweet neem" and we call 'bay leafs' as "curry leafs" :D

Luke, thanks for this video. I have a curry leaf plant in a south facing window inside because it’s too windy outside where I live and it lost all its leaves when I had it out there. It seems much happier inside and flowers and makes seeds every year, but doesn’t produce a lot of branches to harvest leaves from. I’ve started to think that I should maybe top the flowers to prevent it from flowering so I get more leaf growth. Do you have any advice on pruning for more leaf growth and what to do when it goes to seed?

The soil in your pot looks sandy. Do you mix sand into your pot of soil?

I used a stem to plant this..the stem is kinda getting a mold (a white fur like thing) on the 15th day from what it looks like. Any tips on that?
Context: Growing it indoors in Canada, pot is next to a window where there's plenty of sun, the stem cutting is covered under an inverted plastic bottle.

You have a bit of mis-information here. The yellow color people associate with curries (and curry powder) comes from the liberal use of Turmeric. These curry leaves would not impart any color unless you used waaay too many, and blended them to a paste first (which I cannot imagine doing). The leaves are usually added to hot oil or ghee along with spices as part of a final tempering step.

Thank you Luke. I love curry leaves. Could you make a video on how to germinate a curry leaf and are there different varieties of curry plant. I notice my curry leaf is very pale green but the ones in the store are dark green. Perhaps, I'm doing something wrong. In California north, could I plant my curry leaf outside? And how do I winterize the C.plant.

I have a small plant that was gifted to us and it's not growing. I just repotted the plant and put it in full sunlight area outside (Oklahoma City are). It does not appear to have any disease or bugs. Any recommendations on how I an stimulate growth?
