Curry Leaf (Murraya Koenigii) Propagation, Pruning, Repotting & Harvest

- In today's video we will look at the propagation, pruning, repotting and fertilizing curry leaf plant, also known as Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii plant which produces aromatic leaves, used in a lot of Indian, Sri Lankan and other south Asian cuisines
We start off by looking at how a curry leaf tree produces seeds. We then show you how to harvest these curry seeds and propagate them into new plants.
We then move on to pruning techniques to show you how to raise a nice, bushy plant.
In the next section we talk about repotting a curry leaf plant to a larger container, something that must be done every 2-3 years. This prevents the plant from getting rootbound.
We then look at the right way to harvest curry leaves. Either cut off the tops of the plant, from the top 3-4 inches, to harvest OR harvest the entire petiole (the leaflet) and not the leaves. This is an important difference between leaflet and leaves.

Hawaii is the perfect place to grow this plant. I hardly water it but when it was little, I did fertilize it every 3 months with fish emulsion. I couldn't believe my luck when the seeds dropped and another plant started rooting. Now I have 2 curry trees about 20 inches apart. I keep them like small bushes so it works out well for me. I use the leaves in tons of rice dishes and now having seen many recipes (especially for dry curry leaf spice) I can put all of my leaves to good use. I also used this video to prune and I have nice roundish bush like trees. Not taller than 5' high, they are easy to pick. I even give many fronds away to local Indian restaurants! They love it and sometimes give me an order of chicken masala or naan, which I never ask for, but am always very grateful to eat!

YES! I grow curry leaf plants in the North Georgia mountains! Of course, I bring them inside during winter.
They bloom every year during the summer and I save my seeds to grow new babies.

Thank you for posting this! I bought a curry leaf plant from someone and I cut the tip off. It hasn't sent out shoots. Leaves turned yellow. So repotted, and saw that she had planted in garden soil in the pot! Soil was compacted and hard. Took off most of the soil and repotted in potting soil and perlite. Fertilized it and watered. 2 days later, it looks better , leaves slightly green. Won't be buying plants from her again!

Down here in Sao Paulo, Brazil with two large curry plants growing in the front garden which we have to brush by to enter the house creating a delicious aroma when we pass. Now that we are in autumn the seeds are very big but still green so I came to find out how to grow from the seeds. I will certainly take all the advise. Thank you.

I've never tried pruning the top off my curry plant but I'll take your advice and do it now (since it's winter here) and hopefully it will grow new bushy growth this spring. Wonderful tips as always!

Thanks so much for this video. My curry leaf plant has blossomed this year and now I have seeds! I love this beautiful plant and I'm still learning how to cook with this herb. I found a beautiful Seminole pumpkin-curry leaf recipe, it was so delicious, but my husband didn't enjoy. We are not Indian and he isn't a fan of those types of foods so I'm still trying to figure out what American recipes to use these in. Thanks again for the very helpful video.

Thanks Bud for a comprehensive, easy to understand presentation, delivered clearly at the correct speed. I've been looking for something like this for a while - though I have saved my potted curry leaf plant over Chicago winters, it's getting a little spindly and I would like to propagate it for insurance! I wonder if I could prune off a 6 - 8" length of upper branch and attempt that. I do have a few seeds but I suspect they won't germinate - their skin has already dried out and turned wrinkly.
Thanks for the video! My curry leaf plant developed flowers in the summer so I kept in my garden to ensure pollination (I don’t know what method of pollination it uses). I brought it back in when the weather started to cool down and it developed plenty of seeds. They had just reached the stage of being ready to plant, so I have just planted 30 seeds! I really hope they germinate. I love the taste of curry leaves and the plant itself looks lovely. I like having a little indoor jungle to help with the cold snowy winter months.

I just moved to new home..i was wondering what plant i have in my new garden.it has black small fruit on it.i thought that is olives but i just realize its curry plant...wow ..i am happy whether its olives or curry...it has so many black fruit👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My little baby plant is turned into a huge tree in less than a year, I keep pruning it but it keeps growing and now it is over 15 feet, I do see seeds but never tried to plant them, now i will, thanks

I am in Swakopmund, Namibia, which is quite cold most of the year. I brought my curry leaf plant from South Africa about a year ago and am still struggling to let it grow indoors. Well living in zone 2B in Canada I knew I really couldnt get this beautiful plan to grow for me. I just get 'care package' of curry leaves whenever I visit my aunt in Orange County. But yes, I have had a small indoor curry leaf plant in the past - but it cant do much!
Sumac in powdered form also has a complex citrus flavor and is useful in many recipes.
The curry leaf berries are delicious to eat.It has an after curry flavour.

Great video! My plant is finally setting seeds and I am excited to start new ones! I've propagated many using the suckers and have given them away to friends and family, but I want to grow some from seed to keep them going strong in our garden. I love the tender leaves in all my curries and even in pakoras!

I live in the Philippines and curry leaves are almost impossible to find and curry leaf trees even more difficult. Nonetheless I was able to get my hands on a small tree that was in bad shape. I repotted it in good soil. I do not have to water much as this is the rainy season and the pot has good drainage holes and the soil has both pearlite and coconut coir. It gets direct morning sun from dawn to about 1 pm. It has been over a month since I got this plant and it is looking healthy. There is new growth and it is growing in height
Excellent video like all your videos. Very low maintenance plants. I live in the Philippines and have three of these. I have never watered or pruned them and they just grow like crazy. Very tasty to add for 30 seconds at the end of sauting onions o you don't burn them.

So much i didn't know! Ive made a mess of my 2 meter plant, but doing my best to fix it now. It is only a skeleton in new soil, so i hope it is going to grow.
My Seattle Indoor Curry Leaf habits: It grows 6 inches, loses all its leaves, you worry enough that it decides to regrows its top again, soon flowers and seeds come. You collect the seeds and the cycle starts again with the leaves falling off. It has a very Dr. Seuss looking kinky pencil of a trunk now 4ft tall, taped to a glass rod for support. Now has a 5 inch hat of leaves and flowers. I am the laziest indoor plant gardener. All plants get light blue water of Miracle Grow year around, more in Spring.
I do think I keep my Curry Leaf plants more moist than most with daily top pot waterings.
I need to learn from you if you wish. I am interested in agriculture activities, but having such a knowledge in place is very rare to studies all those activities.
I did try to propagate with a stick, no roots were grown but had some foliage and then it eventually died. I will try it again with a fresh branch and root hormone. Thank you for tips, I am in Canada, save couple of seeds for me and I will pick them during my visit to California.
Its very difficult, if not impossible, to propagate this plant via stems. Try seeds or suckers which grow around the main plant
Many do not know that the seeds do not sprout if dried too much. Better the fresh ripe,purple skin removed and dried in shade if sowed in loose soil in a pot it will sprout. Do not over water,the leaves will fall. Top much heat also not good but it is essential that roots get moist soil and leaves get good sun light.
The plants obtained by using seeds take years to teach a height of even 4 feet,but the brach cutting method gives tall plants in short time.
So seeds are for pleasure gardens and cut branches are for cash farming.

@@bhatishah1091 your plant has scale infection. They are tiny bugs. Make leaves sticky. My 10 feet tall curry leaf plant died because of scale infection
Great information. Can you please do a video on curry plant diseases(scales aphids and many more) and remedies. How to recognize it early. My plant was attacked by scales and it took toll on my plant. Was able to recue it. Wish knew it earlier to spot the problem. Thanks in advance !

Your plants look so beautiful, I envy you. I have just one, it's rather small and doesn't want grow. I am going to replant it into a bigger pot to see if it helps.
Make sure you are adding organic matter, keep soil ph neutral to acidic, move plant to part sun (5 hours). Good luck!

in 15 days my curry seeds germinated in paper towel. 1 inch roots came. half inch plant top showed up. I planted them in soil today.

Nice video! The only time I've came across this plant was back in culinary school. I remember the scent of the leaf reminded me of burnt hair. Lol!
We live in Tucson, Arizona and it is very hot in the Summer and dry. The winters can be cold here in the desert. We have been growing our curry leaf Plant indoor for the winter and it lost all it's leaves. In March I have put it outside and now it is sprouting at the top and looks wonderful. How do I encourage growth on the bottom of the plant? It is approx 3' high and only has growth on the top 3 inches. It is budding at the moment. Should I cut the buds to encourage growth? Very instructional! My curry plant is tall but not producing any more aide shoots on the long stalk. We do live in zone 6 so hopefully with warmer weather it will grow. I've repotted it and will be sure to follow your tips! I've yet to prune it as well. I've been scared to prune in case it doesn't grow back. Perhaps I should prune it this summer when it can grow, instead of right mo when it's still cold where I live. I'd love any more tips you might have to make my plant more bushy.

Thank you for the informative video. I received a baby plant (transplant from mother plant) about 1.5 years ago. Plant seems to be growing well and has 2 tiny baby plants next to it but the “mother plant” actually seems to be 2 separate plants (the stems are separate even going into the soil but are right next to each other). They are about 9-12” tall. Should I try to separate them into 2 pots to give them more space to grow, or does that risk harming the roots too much?

Thanks! Transplanted seedlings die because of "transplant shock" - Try to harden off the seedlings by moving them outside in a shaded area and then in partial sunlight and then finally to full sun. Hope that helps!

thanks - I brought small sucker from AUS to Greece and in pot in Athens in summer is good - plenty of leaves - in winter I surround it with plastic case it gets snow ! please advise re winter care of curry leaf tree in colder climates !

Hi, I tried many times to make it survive where I live that is Massachusetts but unsuccessful. Not able to get good seeds anywhere. Good gardening👍
so thats what the black fruit things on the top of my mum's curry plant is 😂 I never knew it was the seeds and every spring I'd have a couple handfuls of it both from my mum and dad's mature plants which eventually becomes bird food

What is the best place at this time? also the ground soil is very clay here.. so all our plants are planted by replacing 1ft deep clay soil with a potting mix ... Thanks in advance

My original seedling was bought near you at the Mecca for indoor plants Logee's Plants for Home & Garden in Danielson, CT and shipped to me (4"s tall) in Seattle. Seeds came after 4 years. Grows assisted by a hardware store Philips Mini Twister 6500K 1600 Lumens fluorescent bulb.
