This is a perfect timing video, I was just at a nursery and wondering if the bay laurel was the same as the spice we use. I will now go back and purchase one. Thank you Angela!
I live in Florida. My mother in law planted about 8 laurel bay trees in this yard in 1956. My husband has never left home and I've been living here since 1972 tending the trees that grew huge and providing our big yard with so much shade nothing flowered. The trees were beautiful. Then laurel wilt disease hit the southeast coast and we lost all the trees within two years, despite arbologists trying expensive infusions to keep at least one alive that lasted the longest. We gave up on bays but suddenly one 'dead' piece of trunk that the tree removal guys didn't remove showed signs of a sprout and now, 10 years later we have one of the few bay trees in the area which has grown strong and healthy. Avocados are laurels and when the disease spread South Florida was in a panic fearing the loss of a large part of the commercial supply of avocados, but the wilt seemed to subside before hitting that far south. I think I got that straight. (I lost my huge avocado plants about 30 years ago because of too much shade from the bays, which was fine with us since tree shade was more important)) Thank you for this video. We replanted with live oaks, which are more hurricane proof so my one lbay is happy to be queen.
I had no idea we could grow this plant in AZ. I adore this spice. Do you sell these cuttings locally?? I would love to pick one up and give it a go this year.🎉❤
Love the idea if the laurel leaf wreath!! So cool. I have a potted indoor plant for the last 2 years from a small plant (im zone 3) and it is SUCH a slow grower lol.
Great video, thank you you gave all the information needed to successfully grow this plant and no unnecessary information. Really awesome. Thanks again. I have subscribed to your channel now too. 😊
Just subscribed because your videos are concise and thorough. Yours is a valuable asset to my growing aspirations in Gold Canyon. By the way, thank you for speaking CLEARLY and ENUNCIATING your words!
Perfect timing! I've been meaning to get one of these. That's interesting about drying them first! I was kinda hoping it'd be like an herb where I could just go pick a leaf off whenever I needed it. Is there a reason you dry them?
Thank you so much for this info. I had one a few years ago, (in Scottsdale) and I made the mistake of not putting it in the ground, it lasted for about 5 years. I've been unable to find a reliable source for a new one since. Can you recommend a local place to buy a plant or get a cutting?
I have had a difficult time with Bay, scale insects appear out of nowhere and keeping them alive over winter even under a good grow light is a challenge.
Same problem for me. Northern VA ZONE 7A so I can’t plant them in the ground or leave the pots out dec-feb. scale shows up and I use need oil, but the bush dies anyway. Trying one more time this summer, hopefully third time is a charm.
For the last three years I’ve tried to get a bay laurel to grow taking them in during winter where I use grow lights for 6 hours or so. Every time they do ok until spring and then they die. I’ve been trying to find a robust bush to transplant but can’t find any over a foot tall.
My wife (the gardener in our relationship) got me a bay laurel. I’m a little concerned that it won’t do well in very rainy and wet South Louisiana. It’s still very tiny, but it seems to be doing ok so far. I’m the cook in the house and I got really tired of the broken stale dried bay leaves I got at the store.
Hey, lovely informative video. I just have one question still unanswered. Can i force branching on the plant? Mine is small, but its still a single stick. Can i force branching to make it bush up a little bit?
I was gifted a few branches, but none of the leaves had any scent at all. I'm not sure if it is a species difference (grown in Oregon, but leaves look about right size). I put some in the dehydrator but still no scent at all.
Can I grow it in pot? I am from karachi pakistan. We have no winters. If yes, what is the minimum size of the pot inches (height and widht)? We dont have a ground, I have to put the pot on the rooftop
Angela is such a blessing to us all. ❤😊
Perfect timing. I asked a friend for some cuttings from his very mature tree. Thanks 👍🏽

Which nursery was this?
I couldn’t keep mine alive last year but you certainly inspired me to try again!
Great timing for this video! I have two that need to be potted up. Thanks for the information. 🌱 ❤

Thanks for sharing. Trees become such a part of our home and landscape. Losing them is tough. Glad one survived!

Drying can reduce bitterness.

@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks Angela!

Sorry to hear that. Indoor gardening can be challenging for sure.

@@JoshuaQ8 I tried insecticidal soap but it takes several applications so using preditory insects is the best option since I have citrus too.
Do you do consulting? I'd love to get your opinion on my new garden.
Limited yes. You can contact me for more details.
So informative thank you so much! ❤

That's frustrating.

I hope it grows well for you!
what hormone would you recommend for food crops? how many weeks for roots to form?
This is the one I use: amzn.to/3WgREYD

Absolutely.
@@GrowingInTheGarden how? How can I force branching?
My bay Laurel is not spreading. It is a single stem about 7’ tall. Can I top this plant? If so, when is the best time?
You bet - I would wait until danger of frost is passed.
I was gifted a few branches, but none of the leaves had any scent at all. I'm not sure if it is a species difference (grown in Oregon, but leaves look about right size). I put some in the dehydrator but still no scent at all.
They don't have a strong smell.
whats the best time of year to prune a bay leaf ?
Early spring
Angela where can I find a cutting? I’m from phoenix!
Check A&P Nursery or Arizona Worm Farm
Thank you! 🙏

Yes - 10 gallons would be best.
I live in zone 8A North Carolina. I'm hoping it will grow here.
Baby it the first few winters, and hopefully it will be fine once it gets established.
angela I live in Chandler, do you sell any plants, I would love to buy few from you for my kichen garden
No, sorry. Check A&P Nursery and Arizona Worm Farm for starts.
Where do you find a bay laurel in AZ?
You can check A&P Nursery
Can we grow it from seeds? Do they produce seeds?
Some types produce seeds - I've never tried it. I didn't see anything about growing it from seed in any of the research I've done.
Anywhere local selling this plant?
Check with A&P Nursery
If you live in California its better and easier to plant our native California Bay. Thanks.
I am in Glendale and love to see your nice videos. We would like to visit your garden. Pl inform your location and contact number.
Hi - I'm not offering public tours at the moment, but thanks for asking.
