    Papaya trees CAN be pruned, and if you want to keep your tree short, they SHOULD be pruned. I have several trees around my property in various configurations. After the 1st year, you'll get suckers growing on the trunk. You can keep your tree short by chopping the trunk at ~3-4ft from the ground. when there's no more chance of frost in early spring. The first time you do this, you won't get fruit that season, but new suckers will grow into multiple trunks. It's like managing an indeterminate tomato plant. Keep one stem/trunk if you want big fruit, or keep multiple stems/trunks if you want higher quantities of smaller sized fruit. I usually keep a single sucker that is growing in whatever direction looks nicest, and use the other suckers as clones via airlayering.

      Excellent reply. Your name was aptly chosen. It's obvious Luke is new to papayas. I'm growing mine from seed and they're MUCH thicker than his plant. They just started to flower at 18" and they're hermaphrodites so pollination won't be an issue. Papayas grow true to type so why both with grafting? And you can definitely top and prune them. I'm growing them in a very similar climate to Luke's so my results are not attributable to my region's climate, especially being in Canada lol.

      This is absolutely true. I m from Indonesia and I know exactly how to grow papaya. Papaya tree CAN be pruned. I've been living in Canada for almost 10 years. I love papaya and I've been trying to germinate papaya seeds from store bought papaya but unsuccessful . Noone sells papaya trees over here as far as I m concerned.

      @@Free_Falastin2024 How do you know your seeds are hermaphrodites? Where did you buy your seeds? I tried from seeds of fruits bought in store it grew to 1 ft and slowly died. I live in Canada as well. Thanks for your knowledge

    Great vid. Have you fruited papaya indoors?
    I will add that you can top papaya if they get too tall and they will shoot and form multiple trunks that will go on to produce fruit. Might help those with a ceiling, They grow and produce fruit so quickly in warmer climates that it is easy to just cut it down and grow a replacement.

    Ripe papaya drizzled with lime juice and a little honey is such a healthy and refreshing breakfast! the seeds also have antiparasitic/antiviral properties I believe, and have a peppery taste similar to nasturtium leaves.

  • @franksflytraps
    @franksflytraps 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    TWO corrections.. you can top a papaya if it gets to tall and it will grow a new flowering stem. #2 if you grow ungrafted papayas you will need MANY plants to grow either male, female, or hermaphrodite trees for pollination. You dont know what your growing until well into its life so you need to grow several if you want one to fruit. Awesome, super easy tree to grow, but definitely not easy to fruit with just one.

      topping or stressing it in other ways can force a male to fruit. I've done it via topping and have seen others literally driving stakes thru the trunk.

    When I lived in Papua New Guinea, I found that the BEST papaya were a deep pink . . . they're better than the orange fleshed ones. I don't know the names - but they were huge fruits and so GOOD! Thanks for this video about papaya - they're worth it! (I now live in Illinois - not the best natural environment for papaya! )

    I have 4 papayas growing in my back yard and last year they got hit super hard with red spider mites. Lost all the leaves and the tops died. Didn’t even have to cut them back and they shot out new branches from the trunks which currently have fruit so even without cutting them back it is possible to get fruiting branches on papayas. I’m in CA. Low humidity doesn’t seem to bother them much either but strong sun and good drainage is a must. And give them as much heat as you can.

  • @nickengland29
    @nickengland29 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can absolutely cut the top of a papaya off. It has AMAZING results and can be done multiple times. You will end up with bushy plants that have multiple trunks. I had some that were only male and looked into if you can make them fruit. Found out you can stress the plant out by cutting the top off and it worked. So then I started thinking about using this to grow a bushier plant that's not as tall. Took a new papaya and cut the top off at about 2ft tall, then it bushed out with multiple trunks. I've also seen people sticking wooden stakes thru the trunk to stress a male into fruiting.
    I've also seen people take a small papaya out of the soil to expose the roots. Then you snip the main root and put it back to make into a female.

    When the papaya’s terminal bud is cut they will produce multiple side shoots. The new shoots will transform the plant from male to female leading to positive fruit production.

    Great video Luke but you made one massive mistake and that is papayas grow lateral branches as well but it just takes a while. Being from Jamaica I've seen more papaya trees in one week than most will in a life growing everywhere and they send out lateral branches eventually. The original stem can be cut if strong lateral growth is present to keep the tree shorter. this was also correctly noted by another youtube gardener Rob from Australia.

    Topping a papaya tree can give you two main trunks. You might have to wait till the trunk is generating sprouting s on the sides of it's trunk while growing but the tree does make two main trunks when topped.

My last papayas were in a poly tunnel, didnt make it after a freeze. But they had produced 4 fruit. Not knowing what to do, i cut fruits hoping they would still ripen. But they molded. So i try again with trees i actually like flavor of. Take care.

    I had tried and failed multiple time trying to grow papayas from seeds from store brought fruit.
    I live in the northeast, colder than MI.
    Two questions:
    1) Where do you recommend that we buy the grafted and non-grafted trees, online or brick and mortar?
    2) What growing light do you recommend that is not too expensive and where to buy it on sale?
    Looking forward to eating REAL papayas in a year or so.

      I don't think it's a good idea to chop it down too short. Maybe around 3 and 1/2 feet from the ground approximately. Else they just die. They do send out multiple "branches" when topped off and each branch does fruit. But I believe the tree needs to be mature enough for this to happen. I have them growing in my yard and they usually suffer some kind of fungus or bacterial infection at the heads and sometimes I just chop them halfway down instead of fighting up to pull them out and they do send out 3 to four heads after a while.

    • @crescentgarden6819

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't keep growing, and if you prune it too low that means it will never fruit. Papaya do not form lateral growth like normal trees. They form latteral growth more like tomatoes do. They are essentially suckers that grow fully mature trees before fruiting again and these suto branches can be 3-4 feet in length before they fruit again.

      I think it depends on the tree & your luck. I've seen some cut trees that have grown a couple shoots where they cut the tree and have continued to grow & have fruit on each of the shoots. However, I haven't seen it often and those papaya trees were tall (20-40 ft) so I don't know how long it took for it to start fruiting again. I live in Hawaii and see Papaya trees everywhere. I wish my papaya tree was doing good. They're very susceptible to root rot, which my tree has :(.

    We once grew a Papaya tree in our compost heap a couple years ago here in Johannesburg, South Africa. It grew about 1.5m tall until we decided to move because it received very few hours of sunshine. Unfortunately, it didn't survive the transplant shock and died a month later😢😢

    Hey Thanks for the video. I live in south Alabama, we do get freezing temperatures a couple of times a year. It never stays below 32 more than a day. Will a papaya grow in the ground outside if I keep it from the north wind?
    If not, if I plant in a container, will it do better if I move it outside in the spring?

    Hi, I Was hoping you might be able to help me. I have a beautiful papaya tree growing in a container just recently it's started to have some leaf issues. So far only affecting about 4 leaves the tree is about 3 feet tall. And has been thriving, The leaves have me worried that whatever it is may be spreading. Is there any way that you could see pictures and possibly offer some advice? Thank you in advance for your kindness.

    I am from Puerto Rico, i live in the country,I grow papayas in my land,The reason one papaya smell like dirty socks and one is sweet and juicy ,is because is TWO TYPE OF THEM,it have nothing to do if they grow at home or they are from the supermarket,,I bye them at Walmart too and they sell the type that are ver sweet and orange inside .The reason one have flowers and give you a fruit and others dont,,is because one is female and one is male,,The male plant will never produce a papaya..There is no way of knowing is the seed is male or female,,What do i do? I plant like 50 or 60 seeeds

    Hi. I am having trouble with the papaya leaves curling and turning yellow. New leaves are still coming, but the mature leaves are curling up, yellowing and some browing at the tips. Is this a water, nutrition or too bright of light issue? Thanks.

    Thanks for another great growing guide! I see some older videos where you had a greenhouse but it doesn’t seem like you have one now?

    I live in a area with hot summers (in June July and August it's between 35 and 40°c) And cold winters ( few nights its below 0°C and days are about 10°C)
    13 hrs sunlight in summer and 9 hrs in winters. We have orange trees, fig trees, olive trees, mulberry trees, pomegranate trees and grape. All these plants produce well. I wanna have papaya, avocado, banana, coffee trees in containers but outside. Is it possible to have these plants in my location?

    There's no way I'm going out in the freezing weather we have here to prune fruit trees, especially with my back yard being an ice skating rink! However, when we do get a thaw so that my hands won't freeze within the 1st 30 seconds, would you say that paw paw trees are like pears in that they prefer to grow straight up? I pruned my bare root saplings as soon as I planted them to get side growth, and those branches that came off the side went straight up.

    BIG Question 🤔 why do papaya trees or seedlings keep dropping their leaves? I’ve had one before that kept dropping a lot of leaves and it doesn’t hold a lot of leaves
