    I am growing a curry plant for the first time this year. I am living in New Zealand. So far, so good. "Colin" as I call him has grown about 30cm in about 10 weeks. I was looking to find out how to make the plant more "Bushy". You seem to answer my question perfectly. Thank you so much!

    Thank you! Someone just gave me some cuttings (with small root). Let's hope I can grow a beautiful, big curry leaf tree. I miss cooking with them. I'm in Alabama now (from Santa Barbara), so very hot, humid summer and cold winter, so will keep In pots so I can move them. Wish me luck!

    Thank you so much! I was very reluctant to prune it, after I see your video, I am more confident. This current tree I had it for 4 years, all others last only for 6 months to 1 year and so I am happy about this one and was so afraid to prune it thinking I will ruin it. Now, with confidence, I am going to prune it. Thank you so much!

    Omigosh! Thank you so much for these videos. My husband bought me a curry plant for mother's day 3 years ago (when I complained of the trek to the indian market to buy them) and this year was the first year I brought it inside for the winter and I have flowers! Now I know what I'm doing wrong. I'll need to repot and prune ASAP! It's about a foot tall now and I'll be sad to prune but LOVE the hints. Thank you so much!

      Jessica Hilt Yes repotting and pruning it well (in warm temps) will ensure a nice healthy plant. Just don't be afraid to prune it, the curry leaf will grow back nice & fast.

    I pruned my 16" curry plant and it didn't do anything, leaves yellowed and started to drop, absolutely no green shoots . This went on for about 5 months, from September till February with no shoots. Then I saw somewhere that it probably had gone dormant and needed to be severely in the spring. So a week ago, I pruned it and attempted to root the cuttings. In a few days, I started seeing tiny green shoots on the plant as well as the 2 cuttings that I am trying to root. Oh happy day, I didn't kill my curry leaf plant!

    Thanks for this clear video. Has helped dispel some of the fear around pruning.
    A couple of questions:
    1. Does the curry leaf plant respond to notching? Will notching encourage branching?
    2. f I cut a long branch right down, meaning right down to the woody stem that no longer has leaves, will it branch from there?

    Question: what's the best way to remove the yellow/dead leaves and skeletons from the lower portions of the plant? We didn't know how to prune correctly until we watched this video, and now we have a tall (3 foot) plant that is bushy at the top but has nothing but drooping, yellowing leaves at the bottom. I'm not sure whether to pluck off the skeletons from the tree, or cut them with scissors, or what. Thanks! p.s. we are currently treating the soil of our curry plants (all indoor) with beneficial nematodes due to fungal gnats from overwatering.

    Thank you for this! I have a very small plant that's about a year old, and was afraid to prune it, but you've given me the confidence to try. Do you have tips on how to fertilize/what to fertilize with? I've purchased curry leaves from a few people in the SF Bay Area who have BEAUTIFUL, full, lush plants and one told me she never fertilizes, one told me that she fertilizes with buttermilk, another with yogurt, and yet another said she uses regular organic general purpose fertilizer. With all the different opinions, I'm confused about the best way to go about it.

    Help!!! First, I avidly watch your videos because they're super informative and it's great to have the perspective of a gardener local to my weather. I live in the north part of OC (not so far from your area) and am looking for advice on my curry leaf plant. I bought it online as a tiny plant - now it's about 3 months old and 4.5 inches tall. It really hasn't changed much since getting over the initial shock of being potted. I keep it in full sun, water only when dry and finally added a little slow-release fertilizer about 3 weeks ago but nothing is happening at all. It's not growing, it's not dying... it's not doing anything. Should I be seeing any growth at this stage? Should I prune it? I was advised by the plant's seller to keep it in a 6 inch pot until it's 12 inches tall. Do you think my pot is too small? Any advice will be very much appreciated!!!

    Very informative. Thanks 👍. Just one question, could you please answer? - Can we start the first pruning when the plant is more than 6 inches tall? My plant is around 12 inches tall now, from the base around 6 inches the stem is brown colour and then above that is recently grown, so it is tender and green. Yesterday I could see it started flowering at the very top.

    Nice video, as usual. I'm interested in how you use these leaves. I don't think you need a whole separate video for this, maybe just a blurb at the end of the video stating what one does with curry leaves. Dry them? Saute them? Eat them fresh? Who knows? Not me.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lanium Good point, I was actually going to add that at the end of this video, however I missed that part. Curry leaves can be sauteed with veggies. Usually the veggies also have some spice added to them (turmeric, salt, cloves etc). We also make tomato soup in which, at the end we take a large spatula, add some butter, heat it and add the curry leaves to roast a bit and then add it to the soup. Tastes great. Curry leaves are also a great addition to coconut rice - which is basically stir frying curry leaves and groundnuts in a little oil then adding rice and grated coconut to it. Try it sometime, its amazing! Hope that helps!

      Search for Indian cooking recipes and you will find that curry leaf is used extensively. It is an herb cooked with vegetables, rice and meat dishes. Usually the leaf itself is not eaten (removed and discarded like bay leaf) although it imparts a definite flavor to the dish.

      I freeze mine and add them straight from the freezer to my popu. The Hindi term is "tadka" or "thadka". It is also called "tempering". Google "how to make popu" and you will find lots of methods for making this. It is basically spices fried in oil. You then add it to a dal, or use it as a base for a curry.

    Hi there,
    Today I brought a curry plant about a feet in height and I have been told it was potted about two days. I wished I listened to this video prior to buying as I'm not sure how they have planted it, whether it's a planted root or from seeds. Anyways it's outside in a pot and I'm determine to make this work. My question is when should I prune it? It looks like a little stem with couple of leave at this moment and I don't want to kill it. Appreciate your help. Thanks

    1. When do you harvest your leaves? Right now in the Central Valley in No California the nighttime temperature goes to 32 degrees and is sometimes windy and rainy; the daytime temp is around 41 to low 50s. I have my curry plant which is in a clay pot and roll it outside if the daytime temp gets to upper 50s or low 60s. 2. What happens when my curry leaf plant grows too big and heavy to roll it in and out of the house? Can I plant it outside and will it withstand the colder nighttime temperatures.
    Your advise is much appreciated. thanks.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Abi 1. I harvest my leaves as needed! 2. yes, curry leaf plants in the ground can withstand lower temps. We have had freezing temps twice in the past 5 years and the plants are still growing strong. Make sure you protect it with black plastic if you expect the temps to go below 40: th-cam.com/video/na9XeH2Cicg/w-d-xo.html

    Your video is very helpful... i have been growing curry leaf plant for the last one year... i have 2-3 baby plants that have grown beside the main one that i planted... but all of them have leaves only at the top and just a long stem below that.... may be because i have been hesitant to prune them for fear of losing them :).... other than that is there any fertilizer that you use for the curry leaf plant ?

    Great clip. Very instructive, thanks.
    I'm growing one in Tokyo and it's in its second season now, very healthy with lots of leaves.
    Is there a particular season that one should or should not prune? We are coming into fall right now, is it a good time to prune, or wait until next spring? I found last year the tree dropped all its leaves over winter.

      +Silicon Lunch Thank you! Pruning is recommended at the start of Spring season, when the temperatures just start going up. That enables the plant to send out a lot of new shoots. Hope that helps!

    Hello there! I always learn something from your informative video lessons. Thank you so much. We have extreme cold winters, and my tree goes dormant in cold temps. We use heaters, which make the air too dry in the condo, would you advise to cut the tree down to 6 inches near the soil for newer growth? I am asking this because, scales attack the tree in winter. To wipe all the leaves is a big task. Will the tree thrive back if I cut it way down to six inches of trunk? Please advice. Thank you!

      someone sometimes Thank you and nice to know that you like the videos. You can prune about 30% of the tree and not more. It will come back up with new leaves in Spring/Summer. Hope that helps!

    Awesome videos!
    I recently bought a curry leaf plant and potted up. i see few leaves turning blackish in the tips and few leaves started to fall off. is it due to pests? or lack of fertilizers or watering issues? any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Thanks for this video, very informative. I have a plant about a year old, but hasnt grown much. I've never pruned it before. Do you think it is too late to start pruning it?

      Trisha Vaz Unless you are in Hawaii or Florida, please wait till Spring. When the weather warms up, start pruning and feed a good dose of Nitrogen fertilizer like this one: amzn.to/1zm0aGo - Hope that helps!

    Hi sir👋 awesome videos. I read from a source that you can add the water that U wash your meat with. Which is a blood like residual. Is that same as blood meal and gives the same nitrogen benefit ?

    Thanks for the upload and thorough details. I have a question. Is it possible to prune the Curry leaf plant from its petiole?

  • @ClydeRebello
    @ClydeRebello 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have been harvesting the curry leaves from the petiole and now have just the stem without leaves at the bottom of out 2 ft tall plant. Can i still prune the steam closer to the base for it to branch out to new branches? Im worried there are no leaves like when you do?

    I live in Connecticut and have a potted curry plant which is kept indoors most of the time, because of the severe winters here. My plant has been growing flowers on several branches but they dry out and I do not get any seeds from them. What should I do with the flowers? I do not have any suckers growing in that pot. Please advise.

      +Varsha Deshpande When it gets warmer (around July) the flowers will set fruit and you can use the seeds to propagate

I didn't repot it straight away cuz I I wanted to buy new pots today. But before I do anything, I saw the cuttings leaves suddenly drooped in the evening!? Please note I placed the cuttings indoor, in a wet tissue in the morning y'day cuz i thought it need some water. Today I repotted the droopy cuttings anyway and gave them plenty of water. Please advise how cqn I save it. And if I done right thing? I am worried.

    Hi there, I enjoy your videos. Thank you! My curry leaf plant is indoors due to winter in Canada, however, I see scales on them especially in winter. How do I take care of it? Also, is it the right time to cut in winter? Should I wait for Spring? My plant is about two years old.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      someone sometimes Scale Insects are the only major problem in curry leaf plants. However the good news is that it can be eliminated completely, 100%. Use Isopropyl alcohol (available in pharmacy/drug stores, any concentration) and a cotton swab. Dip the cotton swab in the isopropyl alcohol (do not dilute) and rub all along the stems and leaves where the scales are, removing them. The isopropyl alcohol will kill the scales instantly. Make sure you rub the entire length of the stems, underneath leaves, etc and use your fingernails, if necessary, to remove the scales. Take your time and do it thoroughly. Once all scales are gone, the new growth will not have scales. I had one plant affected by scale and I have successfully eliminated it with just isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab. I wish I had a done a video on that but I did not. Hope this helps. As far as pruning goes, wait till Spring. Prune the plant properly and add Blood Meal at the base and water thoroughly. In about 2 weeks, the new shoots will emerge.
