Indeed he does. It is actually Thomas Downes who breaks up the fight that Arthur gets into in Valentine in one of the earlier missions. So even before the debt collection mission, Arthur has already potentially been exposed. I'm not sure he could catch TB that way, but it's curious that it's already part of the story.
I've often wondered about all the people that Arthur hung out with after getting infected. He must have passed the disease on to others, especially to Mary Linton.

Thanks , 3rd play through and just wanted a chapter two save with Micah in jail and Thomas downs away . I varied things by rolling block bullet to TB Downes from horseback , failed mission twice then option to cancel and enjoy staying in chapter 2.
There really isn't any negative effect of the TB til after you do the diagnosis mission. The game gives you so many tonics and bottles of booze and food, I have never been in a scenario where I was killed because I couldn't recharge any cores. Arthur really is a bullet sponge. I almost always die cus I was trying something crazy or stupid out of curiosity. 99% its falling off a cliff 😂. Not til way late in the game does Arthur's health become a handicap. I assume you still get TB and collapse in San Denis, even if you glitch your way around the Downes mission, considering its a major plot point and multiple later missions depend on it. 😄 I just wish we could get to the west side of the map sooner.
Often wondered if putting up your mask would help but im guessing he probably takes it down in the cut scene. Keep in mind ive not tried this myself but I'm sure someone has.
I re-downloaded this game a few days ago. I was 40% in and hadn't done a single mission in chapter 2. I'd been out for months, had my Arabian. Had a bunch of trinkets and pelts. But I went back to camp and Strauss just started talking to me. Then when I rode off, I died. You can't escape your destiny.
I was able to avoid Downes all the way to chapter 6. Then the first time I went to Saint Denis, when I got near the doctor it triggered the cut scene in which Arthur gets sick and gets led to the doctor; no way of avoiding TB all the way through, dang it.
@@BigPolskiMan I never went to Downes, and I thought I was gonna avoiding getting sick, but as soon as I hit Saint Denis in Chapter 6, the cut scene started in which Arthur goes to the doctor; he gets it no matter what.
As much as we all want to avoid Arthur dying, it can't happen. It's part of the story, it can't be undone. Even if we follow the doctor's orders and go back up in the mountains pretty much, it doesn't work. Still, click bait or not, this is interesting. However, because Downes is the ONLY Strauss mission that is a main mission, it can't be avoided.
it be better if before you do the final missions in chapter 2 you have to go to him to continuer the story, make chapter 2 safe then chapter 3 being the start of his health downfall

And if you cannot avoid the TB mission, you can use any player you want to go collect, except for Dutch. That way Arthur has a chance to live, whole someone else dies
The thing that happened to me is i avoided doing any Struass Missions and avoided talking to Downes...i did all other missions until all i had was Bill's Bank Robbery mission and a couple money collection missions markers had dissapeared...i went to do Bill's bank robber mission and during Bill's Bank Robbery Mission cut scene Strauss walks up and says Strauss had died and tells Arthur to go collect the debt from his wife..even still not having encountered Thomas if you go see his wife Arthur still gets T B

I freed Micah after all, visited Mary, did all the missions that were available without visiting downes. But John is missing again !! Nowhere to be found. So it's like I traded Micah, for John !!! I can live with that. Knowing what John will do in rdr1 to Javier.

The other day , I decided to do a yellow mission which was the Bill and Karen Valentine bank one and just as we were about to leave , Strauss came up to me and said Thomas Is dead and can I collect debt from the wife. After the bank mission was over it sent me to his house where I collected the debt. I seem to have somehow missed the cough in face encounter. Arthur hasn’t started coughing yet

Put off the "TB" Strauss mission in chapter two till I had EVERY possible challenge, every satchel, and every possible side mission complete. I healthy Arthur is a happy Arthur.
Great video thanks a lot I have been trying to stay away from that mission for a long time, but I thought my time was up after reading Marys letter, Great save my friend, thank you again. Regards Chris.
Another option is to keep on editing your saves till the last chapter (before the sick suppose to get worse) and max out the core of your Arthur's Stats (Health, Energy, Dead Eye).
You can sniper Thomas Down dead and rob his House. In the early PS4 version i ended that mission with many dead Thomas Downs in the cutscene wearing his hut.
The purpose of this video was to get rid of the letter that's annoyingly trying to block you from sleeping or getting anything off the table. As far as staying in chapter 2 goes, I realize it get's boring, after you've completed as many challenges and missions available. But that's better than anything after chapter two.
What I don't get by this video is that you've clearly done the Survivalist challenges - but I don't know how to get to the jack mission to start Survivalist without having already done this? I get the letter pretty early on in Chapter 2!
In my annoyance against Thomas Downes killing Arthur, whenever I need a bull, goat or pig hide, I go to Downes Ranch - cap his son, dog and farm animals. Arthur is avenged.
There's an order to the missions where you're never forced to go to the Downes Ranch. I've done it. Of course I don't remember the order of the missions, but I've ended up with that as the penultimate ch 2 mission.
After reading letter, if you kill downes and then it will not give the option to cancel the mission, next you do is again retry and kill downes, then this time you will have option to cancel the mission.
Alternatively you could just not talk to Strauss in the first place and not rescue Micah from jail. Leaving you with healthy Arthur, living his best life at Horseshoe Overlook, with everyone still full of hope and joy, without Micah putting people down all the time, without the Pinkertons showing up, with Sean, Kieran, Lenny, Hosea, Molly & Mrs Grimshaw all alive & well, without Arthur living in the perpetual friendzone and best of all without having to indulge Strauss.
R* did not need to force this mission! All it does is irritate the player since forcing anything takes "the moment" away. The completion timing should've always been just as "optional" as any other mission. Simply don't allow any further missions or chapters until it is completed.🤷♂ Let the player play as they wish!
Reverend Swanson glitch. Do everything you can (Bandit 6, herbalist 9 and everything else up to 10 apart from gambler which should be to 9) then do the mission. Complete the mission as usual but make sure you complete gambler 10 during the mission. After completing it, you should get your outfit.
I seem to have some how avoided it by doing another mission for strause. Basically the TD mission and two other shake down missions were aviable and I chose to do one of the other two after the sequence with Mary's letter and talking to strauss.
Thank you for your video I tried this method on my PlayStation 4 and it worked. I was able to cancel the mission and continue. With other missions. Thank you but now Can you complete chapter 2? Without doing that mission.?
You can avoid the read letter and then cutscene forced, you would have to make it where you never did any of the money lend missions and when you find the letter, you can read it and there won't be a cutscene, after that. You won't be forced ever to visit Thomas Downes.
I recently did this mission cuz i just started playing this game except I didn't get spat on by Downes. I punched him a few times and then I hit Dismiss while he was still on the ground. His family came out begging for his life so I spared him. Then I went straight to Strauss back at camp. I'm wondering: since I didn't kill him, can I go back and visit him so I can kill him and then rob him cuz he still owes money to Strauss? I'm hoping not to get too close to him now that I know Downes has TB. Maybe take out his entire family as well so that there aren't any witnesses. I'll cover my face too lol. PS. I'll also add that i turned down Mary, that old love from his past who wrote him a letter. I figure I have many missions to complete, the last thing I want for Arthur is more problems that aren't his lol.
It does not matter if you ever come in contact with Thomas Downes or not. Regardless of how you play the game, there is only one certainty. Arthur will die at the end of Chapter 6. There is no way to avoid this if you intend to complete the game past the epilogue. You can play the game for many countless hours as Arthur and do everything possible to prolong the inevitable, but if you avoid the ending of chapter 6, then you miss out on the rest of story as John, and the world that is opened up for you as a player in the New Austin side of the map. Or you can just be adamant about it and see if you can explore the entire map as Arthur, collect all the legendary pelts from all regions, catch all the legendary fish, pick all the necessary herbs and much more. This will increase your longevity as Arthur by far if you are able to pull it all off. Even if you can, you will never be able to complete the game until Arthur is long gone.
Good for postponing Arthur catching TB nothing else but I still prefer to play more of chapter 2 as healthy Arthur so it is a useful glitch none the less.
I did this procedure and, YES, it bypasses the ultimatum to go to the Downes Ranch to contract TB. HOWEVER!!!!! Even though I could choose other missions as I pleased, I could not progress any further passed chapter 2 without eventually completing that mission. It was the only mission available and nothing else showed up. So, I chose another hint located in TH-cam: obtaining the Bulldogger snake hat from the Trapper. I needed two perfect snake skins and one perfect sheep skin. I saved this and went for it. Time will tell if it worked or not. Doing the video's procedure DOES bypass the mission but DOES NOT allow you to play throughout the entire game without TB. If the hat thing works, I will post it.
Rockstar has patched so you can't auto save untila later chapter. Also, even if you didn't visit Downes, Arther still catches TB mysteriously.... you can't change the storyline.
Well the fact this guys channel is called "Insane Troll" might be a bit of a clue that this is not possible lol You CAN do what he says in this video and it will cancel the mission for the time being. But what you CAN'T do is stop Arthur from dying. Its in the script of the game. You cannot finish Chapter 2 without giving Arthur TB. A trainer gives you the best hope but still sadly Arthur dies... Even if you make him a 7 foot bodybuilder lol 😂
I don't remember, is hoseas' mission at shamus where you unlock the fence, then already available? Because without the fence, no gold bar chasing would make sense...
I remember shouting at my tv wondering why we were forced to beat him up. Was trying to do a good playthrough and was so mad i was forced to do wrong. Thats the only problem i had with the game.
If you beat him to death do you get TB faster? I'm replaying the game and did not beat him at all, just got the spit in the face, I'm on the chapter where our base is in the swamphouse and Artur seems well still, no coughing. First playthrough I beat him to death and I remember Artur was very sick.

lol in my 2nd play through, before you ever talk to strauss in horse shoe overlook, you can go to the downes ranch but it'll jsut be occupied by a random rancher NPC, but it's the easiest way to get cow/pig hides, not sure if anyone else found that but a bull always respawns as well as 2-3 perfect pigs
I just wish we could get to the west side of the map sooner.
Never realized that’s how he caught it..This game blows my mind every day
same I thought he got it in sanidines.
I realized it after doing a second playthrough and doing research on how TB is spread
Often wondered if putting up your mask would help but im guessing he probably takes it down in the cut scene. Keep in mind ive not tried this myself but I'm sure someone has.
@@clintmcdowell7259 nope people have tried it and it doesn’t work unfortunately lol
Camp funds: $190,000+
Dutch: WE NEED MORE MONEY!
And his horse celebrates with him in the end. Best ending ever.
Crazy how we all know the heartache that awaits yet we come back anyway.
I was able to avoid Downes all the way to chapter 6. Then the first time I went to Saint Denis, when I got near the doctor it triggered the cut scene in which Arthur gets sick and gets led to the doctor; no way of avoiding TB all the way through, dang it.
After a certain point doesn't it no longer allow you progress through the game without heading to Downes?
@@BigPolskiMan I never went to Downes, and I thought I was gonna avoiding getting sick, but as soon as I hit Saint Denis in Chapter 6, the cut scene started in which Arthur goes to the doctor; he gets it no matter what.
So i guess rockstar will give arthur TB anyways.
@@vincebarber6933 Because this is a glitch to skip or cancel the mission... that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Downes coughs on you after the fight with the big guy in the salon in the beginning of the game.
This was so helpful. Thank you so much. I’ve dusted off RDR for a new play through on PS5 because of your helpful videos.
Some really helpful advice for delaying contamination with TB and being able to continue now with we loved once and true.
thank you so much sir, thought i would be forced to endure that horrible experience all over again
Wish they'd make a complete remake of this game. Where you can play multiple players who have their own story. You can play any character at any point and time during your game play. And if you cannot avoid the TB mission, you can use any player you want to go collect, except for Dutch. That way Arthur has a chance to live, whole someone else dies
I usually just throw dynamite at Downes. The cancel option appears after a few attempts.
does this still works??
Hmmmmmmmmph
The thing that happened to me is i avoided doing any Struass Missions and avoided talking to Downes...i did all other missions until all i had was Bill's Bank Robbery mission and a couple money collection missions markers had dissapeared...i went to do Bill's bank robber mission and during Bill's Bank Robbery Mission cut scene Strauss walks up and says Strauss had died and tells Arthur to go collect the debt from his wife..even still not having encountered Thomas if you go see his wife Arthur still gets T B
Strauss walked up.... and said he had died? So he was a ghost?
@@Del_S oh..no i did not mean Straus had died i meant to say Thomas had died before i could go make the cut scene happen where i intimidate Thomas
@@MrZomg17 Oh, right, that's less spooky. But still, seems like your game decided to go quite glitchy
@@Del_S do you have twitter? I will show you a picture of something i found on my Red Dead map both on story mode and online
It would be nice to at least explore blackwater with arthur before he dies
That was awesome!! In all my last playthrough I stayed as long as I could in ch 2, with Mary s letter on the table, and Micah in jail. And I couldn't go forward without visiting downes !! But this time I can visit Mary without tb !!! It's exciting!! LoL 😆😆
And do some more missions!!
I freed Micah after all, visited Mary, did all the missions that were available without visiting downes. But John is missing again !! Nowhere to be found. So it's like I traded Micah, for John !!! I can live with that. Knowing what John will do in rdr1 to Javier.
You can do this anyway it's called don't show up at camp bc worst thing they do then is send bill javier or Charles to check in on you which after you can prompt them to run along back to camp and they never sent them after me i get all the free Healthy aurther play i want ps who want to hang in camp anyhow? Boring
Just like By the Book in GTA V. They know you don't want to do the mission, but they force you anyway
Why that mission is cool
@@AK_GV You think that's cool??
@@ExplorerDS6789 well the overall mission is nice. Also the part where Michael and Dave are talking about what really happened in North Yankton is interesting
When I played the first time I got to the point of robbing the Valentine Bank and had to see Thomas Downes right after.
I really Appreciate that at least you try to save arther
Rockstar did Arthur dirty
I left the camp as soon as I got a letter from Mary......never went back....it's my 8th playthrough and it's been four real time months i haven't been to camp....i have had Javier....bill.....Charles..come look for me but.....i am good....
It's too late anyway downes coughed on you in the salon fight in the beginning of the game
@@bodhi6769 oh...damn....not again......
hahahahahaha😁
You are truly the Micah of TH-cam .
Arthur getting TB is an absolute point in time.
I’m on my second play through and have stayed on chapter 2 for months now and have left the Thomas D debt collecting.
Didnt happen
Does Arthur cough now?
@@kistatra3645 I’m still on chapter 4. Think it’s chapter 6 he starts coughing
@@rebeccam9what about now?
i avoided downes misison and complete all other story missions, take the legend of the east satchel. now i was searching that "?" sign on karen which pops up little before but now i cant find it. that "?" on karen never occurs. so we are in horseshoe overlook how can i proceed without doing downes misison, story is kinda stuck. is it real that valentine bank job can be happen wtihout doing downes ?
Wow this actually worked, thanks!
indeed. still does to this day.
Rockstar being classic Rockstar, you have this awesome open world but the story mode is in a more forced direction than a railroad track.
Thanks buddy, but how did you get the Eastern Legend outfit in Chapter 2?
It’s almost like Rockstar knew we would try to avoid the mission…
Arthur still developed tb though doesn’t he?
Another option is to keep on editing your saves till the last chapter (before the sick suppose to get worse) and max out the core of your Arthur's Stats (Health, Energy, Dead Eye).
That "ee yup" followed by "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" when he falls ended me 🤣🤣🤣
You can sniper Thomas Down dead and rob his House. In the early PS4 version i ended that mission with many dead Thomas Downs in the cutscene wearing his hut.
July 9, 2024 this still works!
you’re a life saver!!
(literally!)
(for now) 😅
feb,5th 2024 and it still works !
Dying is the part of arthur's redemption
he see things more clearly
Legend, now I can enjoy chapter 2
thank you brother, you saved my Chapter 2 life
Absolutely loved playing this game
That teabaggin horse in the end was good.
There's an order to the missions where you're never forced to go to the Downes Ranch. I've done it. Of course I don't remember the order of the missions, but I've ended up with that as the penultimate ch 2 mission.
must've spent a lot of time doing challenges before doing the first story mission in chapter 2 to have the LOTE outfit this early!
It's strange seeing Arthur doing the Downes mission in the LOTW outfit.
After reading letter, if you kill downes and then it will not give the option to cancel the mission, next you do is again retry and kill downes, then this time you will have option to cancel the mission.
You can see that Arthur coughs after cancelling the mission. He still gets TB.
How did u get that outfit in Chapter two? Doesn't it require the horse fence unlocked?
Reverend Swanson glitch. Do everything you can (Bandit 6, herbalist 9 and everything else up to 10 apart from gambler which should be to 9) then do the mission. Complete the mission as usual but make sure you complete gambler 10 during the mission. After completing it, you should get your outfit.
you seriously saved my life
I seem to have some how avoided it by doing another mission for strause.
Wearing a bandana as a mask should help, right? lol
And just stay 6 feet apart.
@@pickeljarsforhillary102 Na That was Covid.
Aurther should have gotten his 87th booster and he would have been ok😊
@@patriot82 then he would have had congestive heart failure
He gets TB from the bar fight, Thomas coughed on him after intervening. Sadly can't wear a mask then
You can avoid the read letter and then cutscene forced, you would have to make it where you never did any of the money lend missions and when you find the letter, you can read it and there won't be a cutscene, after that. You won't be forced ever to visit Thomas Downes.
Works, tested on PS5 February 22nd, 2024
Its funny that this is kinda the only one we have to do.
I didnt do any on my second play through except one just to do something
I even killed Downs with an arrow, and dumped his body in the ocean! Trying to prevent this mission 😂😂😂
6:52 there's only one Roach, any other horse is just imitating :|
Arthur would have died anyway without TB in the final fight against Micah since Micah played dirty and pulled out a weapon.
Guess you could just stay in chapter 2 forever.
He had a plan: Just another empty tape. Dutch said.
There’s no way out for Arthur missions still have to be played out , and he has to die from TB , that’s how the game was made .
Oh god I'm very sure the camp have more than enough money to head to Tahiti
Well the fact this guys channel is called "Insane Troll" might be a bit of a clue that this is not possible lol
You CAN do what he says in this video and it will cancel the mission for the time being.
Because without the fence, no gold bar chasing would make sense...
that mission unlocks the emerald ranch fence, the other fences are available at the start of chapter 2
@JasonLee-ow3ur oh yes? Thank you didn't knew
Loading up an old missin and canceling works too!
I just leave Micah in jail and roam.
The horse at the end 😂
i made myself get TB before i even decided to save Micah. like maybe I'll die and then for sure Micah swings in strawberry.
This mission had me looking up how do you get tb from other people and you can't get it from saliva. Its an airborne disease.
