I just finished my first playthrough like a week ago (currently on 2nd) and I completed this side mission. I figured I was supposed to play it even though it was a side mission, especially with how heart wrenching the mission is and how it ties into the main story. Amazing game 15/10

Anyone else feel that as soon as Arthur got sick with the Tuberclosis virus his perceptive of life changed, it’s almost as if he tried to repair and fix his sins before he died. That really got me in the story 😢

Well even in the beginning he wasn't that mean. Cynical but usually not malevolent. When doing a debt collection however he tends to become overly intimidating for the sake of attempting to get the gang's money back. It's a psychological tactic more than his true self.
And what’s amazing is that in the beginning you also want to be mean and don’t think anything of it cuz your playing as an outlaw but as the story goes on and you see how crazy Dutch is you start to want to be nicer just like Arthur is wanting to as well great writing
It showed good character arc coz I felt the game forces you to be a "bad" outlaw then when you hit the turning point, the tb diagnosis, it forces you to do the good deeds to increase your honor
Actually, after the final cutscene that was mentioned in the video, I found Mrs downs again in Annesburg. She had a new client, and was going into a new apartment. She saw me and said "you go away, you leave me alone", grabbed the new client, and quickly shut the door. Arthur Shrugged, shook his head in disappointment, and walked away.

You forgot the epilogue... Edith and her son are seen boarding a boat, their appearances implying they are wealthier than before. Additionally, issue 75 of the Blackwater Ledger in the epilogue features a news story which mentions the Downes family opening a brand new golf course and owning several successful businesses out west by 1907.
That is really good. Seeing the marks on Mrs Dowes face I had assumed she'd got syphilis, which was as much a death sentence as tuberculosis, back then, but it probably was just that she was beaten up. This detail gives a much better ending for their story.
No, I think you have to get in the brawl with the big guy in Valentine saloon before you go robbing with Javier. Thats when Arthur first meets Mr. Downes. Hes the guy who broke up the fight
I wouldn't be surprised if many folks had the same reaction. Outside of rare instances such as a character running around in a smoke filled building that is on fire, you just don't see characters in games and film randomly cough for seemingly no reason. If it isn't being used in relation to a joke or surprised reaction, a sudden and unexpected cough in a dramatic work is an instant red flag (and potentially a death flag) for the character.
Edith DOES NOT ask you to go stop them from bullying her son. Arthur does that of his own volition. The point isnt redemption or absolution for Arthur. He is spreading goodness, as Edith tells him, just as the sister tells him. If he is to be man unleashed, be good. His redemption is found when he continues to be good through the rest of chapter 6 and helps everyone he cares about get away.
Fun fact of inconsistency: When Arthur was speaking with the nun, he says, "I've got the TB." Historictally, the term tuberculosis, or TB, wouldn't have actually been part of the common tongue. They would have either called it "red lung" or "consumption", as it has the appearance of consuming the body in later degenerative states. When people contracted tuberculosis, the term "lunger" was used as a derogatory term much like those who contracted leporacy were called "lepers". The term bacteria's scientific name and abbreviation was not used in common English until the 1970's. This is not a reflection of the story writers by any means. This part of Arthur's story brought me to tears as it speaks to moral integrity and the need to "right the wrong".

The fact that Arthur is giving away some of his needs to the Downes family just shows how much he doesnt deserve, so much guilt and regret...Arthur's a real human being and you feel bad for this guy. Arthur forever will remain one of the best protagonists in gaming history. Along with John ofc but dayum hes such an MVP!!

Theres this cut scene you get at the camp Arthur sits and talks to one of the girls!! He seems depressed, She even mentions that he is the only one out of all of them that knows how lost he is..
Because everyone walked around with guns and ammo back then. It would be no different than people wearing a hat today. If someone didn't carry a gun, they were either vulnerable to being robbed or they had someone with them that was armed.
I actually went from bad honor into good honor only of these Mrs. Downes missions. You get a lot of honor at the end of these. Probably these side missions are a help to have a good honor at the end.
There is a side mission you can get in saint Denis in chapter 4, first you have to help out a preist, then you help out a sister of the church, and if you do that mid way though you come into conversation with “prostitute” and Arthur takes one look at her and asks “Mrs. Downs?” I just came across this a day ago and I was waiting for it to come up here, but there you go
UR PATHETIC We’ve all tried not to go get the money from this guy, or beating him but not drawing blood. Even if you do manage to get past chapter 2 without doing this mission Arthur still comes back from Guarma with TB

I don't see how its Arthur's fault Mr. Downes died..He WAS going to die regardless of his debt to the gang. She was going to be a widow anyway all of this could of been foreseen by her husband and instead of taking loan money for himself he could of sold off the property and used that money to set his wife and son up for a better life. He was literally weeks from death he knew he was sick. As far as I'm concerned Mr. Downes caused all the trouble for his wife and family.
I also noticed Hosea is quite sick as well, almost immediately as a matter of fact when I did a second playthrough he was coughing and wheezing the second the game hit chapter 2. He probably would have died from a sickness too if he wasn’t shot. He even mentions he didn’t have much time left at the beginning.
Oh but Arthur’s Tuberculosis isn’t a spoiler I guess which is what the videos about lol. I would have assumed anyone watching this had beat the game and knew this by now.
Arthur writes about Hosea in his journal and how he couldn't believe Hosea lasted through the snow up in Colter. The man's probably worn out from old age.
This is probably one of the best redemption arcs of Arthur. He is such a well written character, especially with his realization that he’s going to die.
I love that in the side mission he shows symptoms of being sick when he visits the widow that he already saved. I haven’t seen a game take something from the main mission and have it carry over into a side mission. That is so cool

I completed this mission on my first run through I never thought I’d need high honour just to get it and when I did it I felt well happy it’s just a game but the storyline is so strong I absolute love the game

At 5.47, there's a little clue in the dialogue between Arthur and the doctor. The doctor's question : "The best thing is rest and getting somewhere warm and dry, and taking it easy. Is that possible ?" Arthur's answer : "Sure, I can just take my winters in my country club in California." At first, it look likes a joke, which it is. But when you have completed the game and can finally walk into Blackwater's street and meet the newspaper boy, you can buy the Blackwater Ledger n°75, the one that tell the story of Micah Bell's death. The fifth article reveals the final fate of Mrs Downes and his son : they opened a golf course in California, in part thanks to Arthur's money they received in Annesburg. Therefore, Arthur Morgan had a clear vision of is future when he talked to the doctor : he owns a country club in California (even if he's dead) !

This was one of his redemptions. His true Redemption was helping John and Abigail and Jack Marston get the hell out of Dutch's gang. And he sacrificed himself for it that is why it's called Red Dead Redemption.
Same! It's amazing how many variations there are. I also never meet Mr downs. I finished the chapter before and I guess it times out. I'm told by Strauss the husband died and to collect from the family. My scene was the same as the one here, where I met up with them as they are moving. Curious if I still have TB???
He died after Arthur beat him up. It's possible that the beating expedited the process of his illness and his ultimate death. Same goes for Arthur's fight with Micah where Arthur dies immediately after the fight. At least when you have high honour. Otherwise Micah shoots or stabs you. In the end it's karma that Arthur died. I liked him but it's the price for the things he done. His biggest mistake was to listen to people like Dutch and Strauss.
Rockstar made 1 hell of a job making a unique and different protagonist. Arthur isn’t like what I see in every game what I really like about Arthur is how he redeems his self and the heart he has. Even he did not have much time left he made most of his time about the people he cared for he even died for it.
This chapter of the game really made me Tear up, no woman should ever suffer to be a prostitute, no kid should work in no goddamn mine, life is too short I'm glad Arthur helped them to get a better life 😢🙂❤️
The MIGHTY GRIZZLY I got the good ending where he died where he wanted to die bc I think John marston said Arthur wanted to die while seeing the sunset and he got what he wanted to see the beautiful sun setting ... and yeah and Micah didn’t kill Arthur in my ending so and I almost cried when he said ‘thank you’ to the horse when it died ;-;

I did these missions and had no clue they were the same people, the mother looks really different, I just figured Arthur must of killed that kids father before the game starts
What’s cool is that the mission where Arthur finds out he has tuberculosis is called a fork in the road. I think this is because after this point the decisions you make will basically determine your ending.
I ran into her in saint Denis after doing a church side mission in that City for the nun. After completing the secret missions, I then did the story mission where I return a girl to annesburg, yet, at the end of that cutscene, I still see Mrs downes. Weird huh?
I wonder if Stranger missions are supposed to be finished in a correct order alongside the story ones. Setting up the right circumstances in order to see Mrs. Downes leave with the money and her son at the end instead of succumbing to depravity even when given the choice to start over. This game really knows how to play with your emotions and even if you do the right thing, it doesn't seem enough. But as Rains Fall once said, "...you can never change a person. We only become more who we really are."
There is also a blind man that asks for money somewhere in valentine If you give him money he will tell you that you are dying and you will see things more clearly
I knew it! Always had a feeling that when Arthur got coughed on by mr downs it was the point he got tuberculosis. And when mr downs son said “maybe other events will transpire” it felt like he was alluding to Arthur’s death later on

I saw Mrs Downes many occasions before doing that quest. First time was in Saint Denis and she called the cops on me. Second time, she was chilling near the rail road track in annesburg and she said something about her son so Arthur went into the mines and saved her son. That scene in the video was probably the 3rd encounter with her.

What actually seale arthur's fate is colm torturing him because tuberculosis does not affect 9 out of 10 people and when it does come into affect that person has to be not consuming anything or little things for 1 to 2 days or untreated wounds

You think it's a good stopping point just to free roam with Arthur or better to go to chapter 5 and stop? Most items can be unlocked by chapter 2 except for fishing pole. Thoughts?

I did this mission before triggering the scene in that town, then I trigger the cutscene, she was back, but she was already gone cause I completed the side quest before triggering the scene, so basically I broke the game

I wouldn't be surprised if many folks had the same reaction. Outside of rare instances such as a character running around in a smoke filled building that is on fire, you just don't see characters in games and film randomly cough for seemingly no reason.
If it isn't being used in relation to a joke or surprised reaction, a sudden and unexpected cough in a dramatic work is an instant red flag (and potentially a death flag) for the character.
Edith DOES NOT ask you to go stop them from bullying her son. Arthur does that of his own volition. The point isnt redemption or absolution for Arthur. He is spreading goodness, as Edith tells him, just as the sister tells him. If he is to be man unleashed, be good. His redemption is found when he continues to be good through the rest of chapter 6 and helps everyone he cares about get away.

This is not a reflection of the story writers by any means. This part of Arthur's story brought me to tears as it speaks to moral integrity and the need to "right the wrong".

I actually went from bad honor into good honor only of these Mrs. Downes missions. You get a lot of honor at the end of these. Probably these side missions are a help to have a good honor at the end.
There is a side mission you can get in saint Denis in chapter 4, first you have to help out a preist, then you help out a sister of the church, and if you do that mid way though you come into conversation with “prostitute” and Arthur takes one look at her and asks “Mrs. Downs?” I just came across this a day ago and I was waiting for it to come up here, but there you go

I don't see how its Arthur's fault Mr. Downes died..He WAS going to die regardless of his debt to the gang. She was going to be a widow anyway all of this could of been foreseen by her husband and instead of taking loan money for himself he could of sold off the property and used that money to set his wife and son up for a better life. He was literally weeks from death he knew he was sick. As far as I'm concerned Mr. Downes caused all the trouble for his wife and family.

I also noticed Hosea is quite sick as well, almost immediately as a matter of fact when I did a second playthrough he was coughing and wheezing the second the game hit chapter 2. He probably would have died from a sickness too if he wasn’t shot. He even mentions he didn’t have much time left at the beginning.

This is probably one of the best redemption arcs of Arthur. He is such a well written character, especially with his realization that he’s going to die.
I love that in the side mission he shows symptoms of being sick when he visits the widow that he already saved. I haven’t seen a game take something from the main mission and have it carry over into a side mission. That is so cool
To be fair, if Mr. Downes had TB, he was going to die regardless if Aurthur beat him up or not.

I completed this mission on my first run through I never thought I’d need high honour just to get it and when I did it I felt well happy it’s just a game but the storyline is so strong I absolute love the game

But when you have completed the game and can finally walk into Blackwater's street and meet the newspaper boy, you can buy the Blackwater Ledger n°75, the one that tell the story of Micah Bell's death. The fifth article reveals the final fate of Mrs Downes and his son : they opened a golf course in California, in part thanks to Arthur's money they received in Annesburg. Therefore, Arthur Morgan had a clear vision of is future when he talked to the doctor : he owns a country club in California (even if he's dead) !

This was one of his redemptions. His true Redemption was helping John and Abigail and Jack Marston get the hell out of Dutch's gang. And he sacrificed himself for it that is why it's called Red Dead Redemption.

He died after Arthur beat him up. It's possible that the beating expedited the process of his illness and his ultimate death. Same goes for Arthur's fight with Micah where Arthur dies immediately after the fight. At least when you have high honour. Otherwise Micah shoots or stabs you. In the end it's karma that Arthur died. I liked him but it's the price for the things he done. His biggest mistake was to listen to people like Dutch and Strauss.

Rockstar made 1 hell of a job making a unique and different protagonist. Arthur isn’t like what I see in every game what I really like about Arthur is how he redeems his self and the heart he has. Even he did not have much time left he made most of his time about the people he cared for he even died for it.
This chapter of the game really made me Tear up, no woman should ever suffer to be a prostitute, no kid should work in no goddamn mine, life is too short I'm glad Arthur helped them to get a better life 😢🙂❤️

Same, I’m glad I went with the high honor route. It made this story and Arthur’s death that more touching/powerful. First game that literally made me shed a tear.

Since you beat him up, the TB spread faster, killing him quicker then if Arthur didn't beat him up.

I ran into her in saint Denis after doing a church side mission in that City for the nun. After completing the secret missions, I then did the story mission where I return a girl to annesburg, yet, at the end of that cutscene, I still see Mrs downes. Weird huh?
I wonder if Stranger missions are supposed to be finished in a correct order alongside the story ones. Setting up the right circumstances in order to see Mrs. Downes leave with the money and her son at the end instead of succumbing to depravity even when given the choice to start over. This game really knows how to play with your emotions and even if you do the right thing, it doesn't seem enough. But as Rains Fall once said, "...you can never change a person. We only become more who we really are."

I knew it! Always had a feeling that when Arthur got coughed on by mr downs it was the point he got tuberculosis. And when mr downs son said “maybe other events will transpire” it felt like he was alluding to Arthur’s death later on

I saw Mrs Downes many occasions before doing that quest. First time was in Saint Denis and she called the cops on me. Second time, she was chilling near the rail road track in annesburg and she said something about her son so Arthur went into the mines and saved her son. That scene in the video was probably the 3rd encounter with her.

Wasn't about sanitation, it was that they didn't have antibiotics back then. My mama got TB in the 80's and recovered fine with the proper treatment

I did this mission before triggering the scene in that town, then I trigger the cutscene, she was back, but she was already gone cause I completed the side quest before triggering the scene, so basically I broke the game
