It’s odd to see the doctor wash his hand at 0:50. Hand washing by doctors was practiced in the 1870s but it was only by a handful of them; the majority didn’t believe that germs could be spread by the hands. It’s a small detail that this game is known for. Also he has running water which is another luxury.
Mean the pinkertons were either gonna catch then faster up cause Arthur was legit just some steps away from his dead so he made it easier to sacrifice himself for John
The Sanatarium would only prolong the inevitable. Active tuberculosis requires broad spectrum antibiotics to cure that simply did not exist at the time. The most a Sanitarium could to is intentionally cause a pneumothorax to force the bacteria clusters out for a time while dosing him with narcotics to ease his pain.
@@Snaps08 Basically the medicine required to save Arthur's life did not exist at the time. The only thing they could have done was prolong his life slightly.
You know, I met a man, his name was Arthur I think. He was a bit sarcastic but he kept coming back to the hospital and seeing him grew on me a bit, I didn’t think the tb would kill him since he kept coming back to the hospital. Although eventually he stopped coming back.... I hope he’s in a nice place now
That line broke my heart. It just goes to show how (imo) Arthur was extremely undervalued by the rest of the gang. Especially towards the end. Granted everyone had their own problems but it seemed to me that the only people who truly acknowledged Arthur’s illness and tried to comfort him were Charles and Mary Beth. Maybe Swanson and Uncle aswell. Everyone else just seemed to ignore it even Sadie
@@legendgamer676 I realize this is 4 months old, but i dont think sadie was necessarily avoiding it. I just think she acknowledged that arthur wasnt the type to look for or accept pitty for himself from others. That scene when abigail gets kidnapped and sadie and arthur ride to vanhorn, she alludes to him that she should be the one to do the upfront stuff cause she knows that arthur doesnt want to accept that hes limited now, but spares him his pride by saying, "youre a better shot". He knows shes known, but she still belives and values him. Their friendship, i think is beautifully complex and it kills me even more cause hes the only one in the gang she is truly close too, other than abigail. She even calls him hun.
The amount of people that actually believed that they can try to make Arthur feel better is actually heartbreaking, considering just how much he grew on us as a character. On my first play through I tried buying and crafting any kind of medicine I could find.
In my first playthrough, that scene hit me hard. It felt like a smaller scale of what being in that chair would actually feel like, but I felt it. Although my honor wasn't high at that stage I actually ended up helping a lot of people in the game, and maxed it. Although, I knew that Arthur wasn't going to survive because in those days it was almost impossible to survive tuberculosism
My Arthur never got to wear a simple shirt+vest after that, I had to keep him warm and well-fed. And then he started coughing when eating and that's just... my heart broke
There is a random encounter north from Saint Denis. A wounded man wants you to take him to this doctor and if you take him there, doctor recognize you and is impressed that you had strenght to carry him there. I remember when I first did this event, I rushed to the doctor and helped him, because that random person in Saint Denis also helped Arthur to the doctor 😄
Man it's kind of hard to watch that scene. still gets me a little emotional. The moment the doctor said tuberculosis my heart dropped the same way Arthur's dropped I'd imagine.
Doctor:You need rest. Arthur: *goes out and kills someone every 2 minutes, robs a shit ton of things, goes into many gunfights, does alot of missions *
Doctor: You gotta stay somewhere warm and dry. Is that possible? Arthur: Sure I can just take my winters in my country club in California "cough" no it's not possible! New Austin: Am I a joke to you?
This is heartbreaking to watch. it really is. TB is serious. but to see everything Arthur did even being sick was monumental for a game character. I guess he will live on in everyone who was touched by this game. vaya con Dios Black lung.
TB may have been common in the late 19th century. Still, the doctor diagnosed it simply by Arthur looking sick and a cough with some occasional bloody sputum, which to me as a physician, is funny when I think of how we diagnose TB today with our multiple lab tests. A bloody cough could be lots of things, including cancer, bronchitis, infection (bad pneumoniae can cause bloody cough). Listening to the lungs and looking at the tongue will not really help that much in diagnosing TB. Granted, I know doctors back then had far more limited understanding of these diseases, how to diagnose, and treat (treatment for TB didn't come until the 1950s, and they only developed rudimentary microscopic staining abilities to diagnose in the late 1800s, around the time of this game).
Arthur: *coughs one of his lungs out in the camp* Everybody: Mmm yes, Dutch's plans seems to be made out of Mangoes... Arthur: *goes to the doctor's shop a few times a month* Doctor: Are you good, son? Do you need another shot of Horses Balls crushed and mixed with licor and cocaine?
I found another one. A random event NPC spawns in the swamp area off of St. Denis. He's injured and Arthur can take him to the doctor. If you spawn him after Arthur's diagnosis, the doc will have a different dialogue something like "you shouldn't be doing this in your condition" he will remember you when you bring the injured npc to him.
A what if you never see with red dead is what if Arthur took the doctors advice, headed out west with John, Sadie, and some others that were by that point already loyal to him. Not likely but a nice thought non the less. Interesting to think if he would have survived.
There’s actually a random event where you’re able to talk to the Doctor again after you brought someone who needed to get his arm amputated in his office. He’s really shocked that time..

Notice how after the Doctor says "You have tuberculosis, its a progressive disease.." he then says "You'll be.." but doesn't finish his sentance, I reckon he's saying "You'll be dead within a couple of months." But doesn't want to finish the sentance and quickly changes the subject afterwards.
Good eyes buddy
@ you could just be thinking hes rambling
Wow nobody would've thought that
Yep, i noticed that while playing
Omg that's the same thing i thought, this doctor is such a good guy ;-;
That music when Arthur has these realisations is enough to rip your own soul apart
Suuuuuu
It’s odd to see the doctor wash his hand at 0:50. Hand washing by doctors was practiced in the 1870s but it was only by a handful of them; the majority didn’t believe that germs could be spread by the hands. It’s a small detail that this game is known for. Also he has running water which is another luxury.
The fact Arthur could’ve gotta some medical attention by going to sanitarium but in stead waited for death shows you how bad his depression really was
Mean the pinkertons were either gonna catch then faster up cause Arthur was legit just some steps away from his dead so he made it easier to sacrifice himself for John
@@simonnachreiner8380 so what you saying now in a short answer
@@simonnachreiner8380 i just looked up what a pneumothorax is. Holy shit, does that sound ungodly painful.

Does the doctor say that, when you visit him with John in the Epilogue?

this is a sad one😣💔
That line broke my heart. It just goes to show how (imo) Arthur was extremely undervalued by the rest of the gang. Especially towards the end. Granted everyone had their own problems but it seemed to me that the only people who truly acknowledged Arthur’s illness and tried to comfort him were Charles and Mary Beth. Maybe Swanson and Uncle aswell. Everyone else just seemed to ignore it even Sadie
@@legendgamer676
We should learn from arthur how to live strongly with Loneliness 😭
Mad respect man I tried doing this several times and I couldn’t get him to say a word about the diagnosis I knew there must be some hidden dialogue 👌
Indeed bro, thanks for the feedback
Am I the only person who started to wear Arthur’s winter jackets thinking I can help him get better in my first playthrough
When you get TB you actually feel much colder, despite the occasional sweaty night.
@@BadMoody420 I've stopped smoking as Arthur when he got that last stage of disease
I'm still wondering when the doctor said "I thought you'd be dead by now"
There is a random encounter north from Saint Denis.
“I was hoping you’d be in a sanatorium out west by now”
“You’ll need gold for that. Do you have some?”
Doctor:You need rest.
Arthur: *goes out and kills someone every 2 minutes, robs a shit ton of things, goes into many gunfights, does alot of missions *
2:40 "I need money for that."
The 1948 dollars (which is now WAY more due to inflation) he has: am I a joke to you?
Arthur: "I'd need money for that."
The $1,900 in his pocket: "Am I a joke to you?"
I like that the doctor actually seems to care about him
Doctor: You gotta stay somewhere warm and dry. Is that possible?
Arthur: Sure I can just take my winters in my country club in California "cough" no it's not possible!
New Austin: Am I a joke to you?
he wanted in new austin
There is no civilization in new Austin
Well you insta die when entering New Austin as Arthur
It’s actually: no *cough*, it’s not possible
1:18 Doctor is dope smoking beside a tb patient.
I can imagine the doctor thinking "how is this guy not dying if he looked really sick" everytime he sees him walking inside
1:32 Anyone else notice the random human skull just casually sitting on the table?
I always find it funny that the doc lights up a pipe 2 feet from his patient after diagnosing him with a degenerative lung disease
He doesn't know it yet, but getting the TB is the best thing to ever happen to Arthur.
Gave him perspective in life.
This part in the story really pulled my heart strings I really liked Arthur he was an amazing character and I could not believe he went out like that.
No doctor would ever say “huh I thought you’d be dead by now” to someone with cancer
3:28
The Doctor : "so how are you doing ?"
Arthur : *smoke weed everyday*
Tobacco was believed to cure Tuberculosis then.
Only... Instead of tuberculosis, you'd have lung cancer.
When Arthur opens his mouth to say ahhh, I imagine his breath would be horrific. Rotten teeth, infected gums.
You know I’ve never even seen the doctors catalogue before I usually always just loot or craft the tonics
“I thought you’d be dead by now.”
‘This Indian gave me some herbs . . . ‘
0:52
“You got... L U M B A G O”
Then he would have lived to his late 70's and end up getting shot by the feds. hahaha
Very serious!
This is heartbreaking to watch. it really is. TB
is serious. but to see everything Arthur did even being sick was monumental for a game character. I guess he will live on in everyone who was touched by this game.
vaya con Dios Black lung.
The doctor giving Arthur some cocaine after the checkup is the most 1899 thing ever
2:40 “ehhhh I need money for that”
The near $2000 in his pocket: 😐
What’s amazing this game has been out for a while and you are still finding secrets
Yeah lot to discover her
@@IndoJordy Do you have the Guarma "camp" conversations by any chance?
Arthurs death was so avoidable you even see the guy that gave him tuberculoses the freedom the game gives you should be able to save him
Pretty sad when he dies it makes me sad.
Yeah it is
Doctor: "Do you need anything? Some cocaine perhaps?"
Nah I have 99 of that
Doctor smoking in front of Arthur suffering from TB, real professional
I love how all the merchants in the stores comment on Arthur, mostly out of concern, and Arthur’s like, “WHAT MAKES YOU SAY THAT?” 😠
TB may have been common in the late 19th century.
I mean it is a game
4:15 Perfect, spread that TB just aaaaaaall over that doctor's office. Be the original anti-masker!
Pov me pretending ti be super sick infront of the doctor
"Need money for that" has the equivelant of like 300k in money back then
Fun fact, you will have more dialogue if you bring the arm man to the doctor before the diagnosis he will recognize you.
Thanks buddy
Yeah
Arthur: *coughs one of his lungs out in the camp*
Everybody: Mmm yes, Dutch's plans seems to be made out of Mangoes...
Arthur: *goes to the doctor's shop a few times a month*
Doctor: Are you good, son? Do you need another shot of Horses Balls crushed and mixed with licor and cocaine?
Stand there chain smoking cigarettes in front of the man the told you you have tuberculosis, then coughing blood all over him
I found another one. A random event NPC spawns in the swamp area off of St. Denis. He's injured and Arthur can take him to the doctor.
If you spawn him after Arthur's diagnosis, the doc will have a different dialogue something like
"you shouldn't be doing this in your condition"
he will remember you when you bring the injured npc to him.
I love how this guy actually cares about his comments and gives the time of his day to look at them, even likes them too, keep on going man.
This was really cool the attention to detail in this masterpiece of a game still amazes me to this day
Indeed, gives it a bit of life in the game
@@IndoJordy Totally agree with you
4:38 Aaaaand the emotional trauma continues
3:09 "The same problem as before?" I mean, this tuberculosis isn't going anywhere.
A what if you never see with red dead is what if Arthur took the doctors advice, headed out west with John, Sadie, and some others that were by that point already loyal to him. Not likely but a nice thought non the less. Interesting to think if he would have survived.
About 2 years I've been watching you're content, still have you're mojo man, congrats.

Doctor : what can I get for you ?
Arthur : ( coughs )
Also Arthur : sure
"Don't worry doc, as long as I don't do any missions, I'll be just fine"
There’s actually a random event where you’re able to talk to the Doctor again after you brought someone who needed to get his arm amputated in his office. He’s really shocked that time..
