When Sikkim was newly added to the India Union, Darjeeling was more developed than Gangtok. But now, if you happen to visit Gangtok and then Darjeeling, you'll see how much the curve of Darjeeling has come down in terms of development. This itself shows why Gorkhaland must be a separate state, besides the fact that it has Gorkhali people who have distinct cultural differences as compared to the rest of Bengal. Also, the new state is not going anywhere outside the nation. It will be within India, just that it will be a new, developed place, that's it. I don't think it's just on part of West Bengal government to keep holding Gorkhaland under its control just for the sake of it's greed over its beauty, tea industry and tourism. Gorkhalis have always loved their fellow countrymen, and have the same allegiance towards the nation; and this movement is NOT against our Bengali brethren or West Bengal in particular.
P.S. 1)The British had added the proposed 'Gorkhaland' region to Bengal only for administrative convenience.
    2) It would be ignorant on your part to compare this movement with that of Kashmir, which is a disputed territory eversince 1947, and India, Pakistan and a fraction of the Kashmiris all claim it to be theirs. 'Gorkhaland', on the other hand was, is, and shall always be an integral part of India. The Gorkhas are just claiming their birth right.

Demand for Gorkhaland is genuine and has a valid point, culture different, language different , has enough population to be a separate state, has a long history of their demand, Govt. should immediately step inn , and declare Gorkahaland a separate country

debojit dutta declare them different country bt never merge nd relate darjeeling nd its people wid my peace country Nepal..Gorkhaland is there in nepal already a historic place of nepal..Nepali from Nepal r real brave gorkhas these darjeeling People r not gorkhas they r cowards fake Just using our brave kings name from gorkha nd demanding gorkhaland to gain some attention... Infact they r not real gorkhas.. Real gorkhas r more in british army regiment nd few r in indian army regiment..darjeeling people r not gorkhas Just using our Nepals history nd demanding state named gorkhaland....we nepali from nepal r against it..either they rename their state as darjeeling land or whatever bt not gorkhaland bcoz gorkha nd gorkhalis belongs to Nepal nd only Nepal.. there can't b another gorkhaland in india.. if darjeeling People r proud indian then why don't they accept indian laws indian languages and rules? what do they want? what?

When Urdu was about to impose on Bengali, they opposed. They came on the street. Why????????? because Bengali people love their language and they don't want any other languages to be imposed on them. Today, I ask Mamata Benezeee why you are imposing your language on others. As you love your language so do others. Because of this language issue , Bengali people separated from Pakistan and the map of Pakistan was changed. I think Mamata Benerzee wants to repeat the same history in Darjeeling.

I am Bengali and totally against imposing Bengali to any other ethnic people. this will only increase hate. Lots of people learn Bengali at will, There is no need impose it on anyone. I think most of them can talk, then why to impose further and put them in identity threat, all nonsense I dont know why the intellectuals of kolkata are not speaking against it.

Just like every Bengali speaking person is not Indian bcoz Bangladesh has more Bengali speaking population, Punjabi is spoken in Pakistan punjab province n Indian state of punjab,Tamil in sri Lanka n Tamil Nadu state, similarly it is our case, Nepali is among 22 official languages of india,n ya a small state is functioning,Goa is smaller than Gorkhaland area, Sikkim has less population than Gorkhaland state,n article 3 of Indian Constitution says a state is to be craved if two community faces their identity crisis, next time please ask this questions to the Indian government,Jai Hind,Jai Nepali language,Jai Gorkha🇮🇳

If today Nepalese demands for Gorkhaland then may be sometime in near future Bangladeshi residing in India will demand for a separate state in Assam.
Basically instead of making a separate state they can opt for Union Territory.

TMC is playing a big game with the sentiments of the community.
It is as simple to show sympathy for the initial time . With the passage of time it will become an agony and bitter heart feeling for their own country.
The people The Gorkhas who fought for us should be acknowledged but not in the sake of giving only Gorkhas as a separate land but to the whole Nepalese people who are serving for the country.
I will not say who is terrorist and who is not but now it is not the matter of concern rather it is the matter of saving cultural and ethnic identity..

Mohua Iam very much impressed by whatever you have said. me being a residence of siliguri and currently passing through the situation in both the hills and plains cannot agree with you more. Just for the language issue demand for a seperate state is not a valid point. GTA chief bimal gurung has robbed both central and the state. In the name of development he has taken 1500cr but has given nothing to the people of hills. The roads are bad, there is no hospital, and no sign of any development in the past five years. In short he has digested all the money. I request ndtv to please do a research on GTA issue to let people of India know what GJM has done to the people of hills. Such corruption should not prevail. Once again very glad that we have such great speaker like mohua

We the people of darjeeling are very innocent and loyal hence these corrupted leaders always exploits us. I will stand for gorkhaland but not behind this leaders. Now they say that it has become peoples movement so we have to choose our own leaders. Most of this existing leaders think that they can play with us for their greed but now it wont be like that.

ke ko gorkhaland? gorkhali ma fight garne gurung magar rai limbu khas thakuris haru ko afno chuttai bhasa ani culture cha ,gorkha land bhanera eutai ho bhanna mildaina..there are gorkhas in india, britain, france, singapore, hong kong and america too. to fight for one gorkha language and state in other country is foolish. Would britain or honkong give gorkhaland if they start a protest there too? Gorkhas are a group of soldiers from different ethnic backgrounds from Nepal who have their own language and culture for eg. gurung, magar, rai, limbu and khas chettri.. they are the main gurkhas and they have their own different language and culture. Yes nepali is the official language of Nepal but other gorkha soldiers' language is also official there, that means you have to fight for magar gurkhaland, gurung gorkha land, limbu gorkhaland , khas gorkha land etc..The best you can ask is for a separate state in India with a gorkhe feel not with a gorkha name which is not inclusive of all the ethnic groups. for eg.. pahad, darjeeling, dooar or himalaya..and that too politically. Protesting in streets is not going to solve ur problem. and don't forget the lepchas, bhutiyas, are they gorkhas too?

Absolutely right comments . The CM of WB has done her best for her Gorkha brothers & sisters of Darjeeling . Depriving south she is trying to develop the hilly region.Unfortunately some power hungry traitors are misguiding common people using communal centiments to achieve their personal vested interest. It is the duty of common & reasonable minded people of the area to stay away from any type of destructive movement organized by those hooligans. Join Mamatadi for the development of Darjeeling for the interest of common people of the thanks to all.

Actually India was colonised by British. It is evident that the British invaded and occupied the territories of Nepal to extend the Indian colonial Empire. Nepal(which was then from Tista in the East to Satlaj in the West and nearly Ganga river in south)lost one third of its territory to east India company which include many places like Darjeeling, Sikkim, nainital, dehradun, almora and many more) by signing Sugauli Treaty which later turned to Indian territory as British left India. But NEPAL has a right to get back the ceded territories. Colonial Power, the British left India setting up new sovereign states that claimed sovereign statehood. Pakistan was one of them. After the demolition of colonial rule Goa which was colony of Portugal became part of India and the Hong-Kong which was part of China became a sovereign sate. Similarly, The sovereign people of Nepal have every right to claim the lost territory of former Nepal. All these people are not only fighting for the name of the state, they fighting for their identity of their own it belongs to them to Nepalese who are children of those brave Gurkhas who died protecting, saving and not letting somebody else to come to their land. They somehow couldn’t protect all of the land but it’s now our duty as a proud Nepali(Gorkhali) to protect, restrain our greater Nepal. Jai Nepal 🇳🇵

NDTV, please understand, there is much more than what is being discussed here in regards to Gorkhaland. Language barrier, developments in the hills, education, jobs etc. are some of the factors that is adding up to current situation over the period of over 100 years pending demand. There is an urgent need to give an identity to the Gorkha people. They have given their sweat and blood for the country but they are not given their due credit. They are being oppressed time and again by any government in West Bengal specifically and GOI in general. They need to come up and its a high time they are given an identity, the Gorkhaland. Centre should not shy away from this matter and ignore the pain of the Gorkha people. These people came with their land and West Bengal govt has nothing to do with Gorkhaland. Dajeeling area was put under West Bengal purely for administration purpose only and holds not history with these people and their land.

Nepal taking advantage of the decline of the Mughal rule invaded India in 18th century in Darjeeling, Sikkim, Kumaun, Himachal Pradesh, but the East India Company with the help of local kings of these areas drove them out. they came back when Stupid Nehru signed Indo-Nepal treaty in 1950, by which Nepalese can come to India without visa and can stay. Now these Nepalis are calling themselves as Gurkhas and demanding a separate state.

The narrative is simple. While the erstwhile independent kingdom of sikkim existed so did the kingdom of Limbuwan.
Limbuwan was an autonomous region that paid a tax of one horse per year to the Hindu King of Nepal and was promised help in case of war and had to promise to help the Hindupati in case of war with men and weapons.
Sikkim had its own issues with Limbuwan and one day war broke out betweed the two kingdoms . True to the agreement the Hindu king helped with money and men and Silkim was faced with defeat so they turned to the East India Company for help and East India Company helped Sikkim win the war. The terrorities of Limbuwan was annexed and the British leased the land from the Sikkim Raja to grow tea n build a place to recoup n recover.
Later when India got her independence Sikkim stayed silent about the territories they had leased out .
When the State Reorganizatiin Committee (in 1953/7) was comissioned to make the map of India the same tract of land was deemed as "tribal land" and it was merged with the state of Bengal "FOR ADMINISTRATIVE PURPOSES".
Then the Govt of India also forgot about this bit ofvland as the young nation had other pressing matters in hand.
The indegenous people who lived in those tracts of land fell victim to harrasment and exploitation by the Bengal Govt who basically excluded them from almost everything including fudging the population census that shows even today that the people didnt exist. Denied basic human rights on their own land and denied their iwn history the people were subjected to racism and excluded from self governance. To make their claims stronger the West Bengal Govt cleverly used the word "Nepali" to mean that the people came from Nepal hence they were forigeners.
The people were forced to give up their ethnic name and re name themselves as " Indian Gorkhas " a title that the fortunate citizens of Nepal condemmn the people of Darrjeeling to have "stolen" from them ....not even trying to understand how or why the people here had to face to come to that situation where we were outcasts .
In Nepal we were called Darjilingays and Dhotis meaningbwe were looked down for our Indian nationality. In India we were "Nepalis" or forigeners ...... Kehata ha na Hindi mei... Dhobi ka kutta na ghar ka na ghat ka.
Imagine such treatment being borne in silence for years and years. Finally in 1986 Shri Subash Ghishing lead the movement for Gorkhaland because we needed an identity and basic human rights.
Bengal Govt fought back and politicised the movement with 99 percent of Bengalis not having the faintest idea of the history of the land. Politicans kept the narrative Bengal was not to be divided again and all that political retoric. Imagine claiming ownership of a land that has names of villages and hills and townships in the tribal dialect and not even "Nepali language" that is the common link language of a group of people with our own languages and culture.
The tibetian refugees that were settled here is another angle altogether.
So here we are strangers on our own land being asked to prove our loyalty to our Nation and being asked to go back to Nepal. while our neighbours and brothers n sisters of Nepal call us Thieves for "STEALING" the GORKHA title.
The Government of Bengal insisting a piece of land that has names like Mirik and Kalimpong n Kharsang and Libang Sitrabung Pulungdung Lahring n Seering and Singringtam and manaebhyanjang as a part of Bengal when i am pretty sure they dont even know in which language these places have been named and yes these places existed before n during the East India Company. The British unfortunately rechristened a few teastates so we have a Bannokburn and Marylbone and Magrets hope as well but we can tell its the Brits who christened the place.
The Tibetian refugees who settled here under the blessings of the Congress have caused enough damage to the ethnic fabric along with being aided by the Govt to help them have control over most of the Govt jobs so that the Govt population census or anything related to us written down as record cannot be trusted.... Glaring example of the number of "official numbers "of death according to the Bengal Govt during the 1986 Agitation for Gorkhaland to the real figures put up by families that lost their dear ones.
Lallantop is welcome to walk into the govt offices to check this claim .just any independent reporter is welcome to walk into the govt run places and see the numbers of Gorkha officials and the numbers of non Gorkha officials holding top posts here in Darjeeling and then we can have a discussion on fair representation.
During the struggle for Independence the right to self rule was a birthright but in a democratic India asking for the same right as a citizen of this Nation has landen a huge number of our people in jail and faced with trumped up charges in 2017.
We still wait for justice from our Motherland.
Jai Bharat Jai Gorkha Jai Gorkhaland. 🙏🙏🙏
PS please copy paste this before it gets reported abd deleted because TH-cam generally cant handle the truth.

Lepcha (Rongkup) and Yakthung (limboo/Tsong) are original inhabitant of these lands. They speak Lepcha and Yakthung languages, and have their own distinct Script, cultures, traditions, and ethnicity and religions. They follow their Matriarchal religions and worship nature and believe female sovereign gods. They are not Gorkha or ethnic nepali, thus why they are demanding gorkhaland, it has no historical aspects. They must ask in the name of something that related to Lepcha and Yakthung and other indigenous tribes. And related to Lho-Men-Tsong sum as previously these land were part of Sikkim.
People need very deep critical research there.
Hope indigenous tribes get their historical rights 🥰❤😇

      rajiv sarmah Research Dorjeling unrest:
Here is a history of the Gorkhas and a lazy hamlet called Dorjeling The history of Dorjeling, The name Dorjeling comes from the Tibetan words, Dorje (thunderbolt) and Ling (place or land), meaning the land of the thunderbolt.
The Nepali Gorkhaland Movement and the famous tea it produces is intermingled and to understand that one needs to travel three centuries back, when neither the borders were formed nor the nation-state.
WRITTEN BY KRITIKA AGARWAL |Updated: June 20, 2017 1:39 Pm
A group of Lepchas in Dorjeling.
Dorjeling, was ‘discovered’ by Captain Lloyd and J.W. Grant in 1829 as a respite for the British from the tropical climate. This small town, under the shadows of Kunchendzonga range, also called the ‘old Gorkha Station’, then deserted by the original tribal inhabitants known as Lepchas and Limbus after the suppression of a rebellion, had less than 100 inhabitants. Dorjeling and its surrounding region shares a complex history with Bhutan, Nepal and Sikkim passing from one kingdom to another finally being annexed by the British empire in 1866.
By the mid nineteenth century, the British were looking out for an alternative to tea trade in India since the export of tea from China was proving to be increasingly expensive. The opium war with China in the mid 1800s further added impetus to the need for finding a tea plantation region in India. The successful tea experiment in Dorjeling came as a boon to the British. Very soon, the quiet sanitarium town was converted into a bustling tea industry with about 170 tea gardens mushrooming. For this, the remaining locals were unwilling to carry out the arduous task of clearing forests, planting tea bushes, laying down railways tracks and building roads and other infrastructure.
Caption: Tibetan and Bhutia coolies in Dorjeling.
Dr Arthur Campbell, who became the first superintendent of Dorjeling in 1839, under the British, was transferred from Kathmandu to Dorjeling. It was under him the town started to prosper. Once the town started growing wealthier, the Lepchas who had taken refuge in Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan returned to live there. A close liaison developed between Campbell and Jang Bhadur Rana, the Prime Minister of Nepal who had overthrown the existing king in Nepal in 1846. This caused further deterioration to the already distressed socio-economic condition of the inhabitants in Nepal, leading to huge scale migration to Dorjeling. Rumours floated in Nepal, “chiiya bagaan mah rupiya falencha, Chiiya ko Bot mein sun paucha. (In the tea plantations, money is spread everywhere, you can find gold in the core of the tea plantation).” Family-based labour migration was ensured to provide adequate reproduction of labour to work in the Plantation economy.
Budhu bojju, an old woman, recalls the stories narrated by her grandparents about how the sardars enticed the people in Nepal with lucrative job offers in the Company Sehar and brought them to Dorjeling. “We have heard all this from our grandparents. They were searching for ‘coolies’ to work in the plantation as the British were running the Kaman (tea garden). In order to resolve the problem the goras would give the Sardars commission on getting labourers. The sardar smuggled ‘the coolies’ from pahar in the night time, through jungles, to the Sehar. My grandparents also came like that.”
It is seen that most of these workers stayed longer than the predetermined period, not out of choice but because the system coerced them into taking debt which they could pay back only through more labour-time. Further, the unfavourable situation in Nepal constructively forced them to stay on and work. As said by sociologist Nitin verma, “the unwritten law in this district is that once a tea garden coolie, always a tea garden coolie.” These migrants found themselves living in the middle of remote, forested terrain where they were allowed little or no contact with local villagers. Flight was almost impossible due to the unfamiliarity of the terrain, coupled with bounties offered to hill people to track runaways with dogs. Over time though, Dorjeling became their home and their roots.
A rigid segregation was maintained between the Nepali migrants in the hills and the migrants from Chota Nagpur plateau in the plains by the colonial rulers. The few Bengalis present in the hills were and have always been the ‘babus,’ the perceived elite who worked for the British and then the Indian government. The Marwaris came in as traders and have controlled most of the wealth. The Nepalese through time found themselves increasingly isolated and discriminated against.
The demand for Gorkhaland has always found its support among the tea plantation workers. The Nepalese find themselves reduced to second class citizens, at the hands of these otherwise minuscule inhabitants. A certain amnesia prevails in the hills; the history of the Nepalese has been erased. With little to hold on to historically, the relationship with ‘maato’ (land) and the tea-bushes their ancestors planted, has grown stronger.
Kipat (ownership of land by a community) and Maato (land) remain central to the movement. Maato ko andolan is still very powerful as it pulls in all the workers together. Slogans like, “Afno Maato bbhada Sddharta Sankar Roy thulo hoina!! Afno Maato Bhanda Ananda Pathak thulo hoina!! Afno Maato bhanda Dawa Narbula thulo hoina!! Bengalbata hamore Mato pharkaunu parcha!! (Neither Siddharth Shankar Ray nor Ananda Pathak nor Dawa Narbula - no one is greater than our homeland. Our homeland needs to be separated from Bengal)” echoed in the hills, each time the ethnic movement resurfaced. There were many others such slogans, which called for balidan for themaato, which inspired the workers who depended on their daily wages from the plantation to go on strikes as long as 40 days.
As the fight for Gorkhaland finds a new impetus, simultaneously tea plantation workers raise their demands for a fairer share of wages. Under the ambit of Plantation Labour Act, 1951, they are paid a mere Rs 132.50 when the minimum wage of a non-skilled worker is Rs. 226, semi-skilled worker is Rs. 248 and a skilled worker is Rs. 273. Other clauses of Plantation Labour Act, 1951 is violated with impunity. Many plantations have closed down arbitrarily leaving several out of jobs and starving. Lack of employment is driving the young out of the town in search of opportunities, which remain limited and plagued by racial discrimination. Those who continue to stay struggle every day figuring out basic necessities such as water, healthcare and transport.

rajiv sarmah The name Dorjeling comes from the Tibetan words, Dorje (thunderbolt) and Ling (place or land), meaning the land of the thunderbolt.
The Nepali Gorkhaland Movement and the famous tea it produces is intermingled and to understand that one needs to travel three centuries back, when neither the borders were formed nor the nation-state.
      WRITTEN BY KRITIKA AGARWAL|Updated: June 20, 2017 1:39 Pm
The Nepalese through time found themselves increasingly isolated and discriminated against.

i hope kiratis in assam sikkim and darjeeling unite and chase out indian and bengalis out of kiratdesh.
nepal darjeeling assam sikkim was known as kiratdesh. still today we have bodo people in assam. Bodo people are also kiratis. In kirati bodo language they say "Ang Nwng khou mwjang mwnw" which means i love you.The Bodo people are the descendants of the ancient Kirat people. They are related to other Kirati group from Nepal namely the Rai, Limbu, Jirel, Dhimal and others. In ancient time, Assam was part of Kiratdesh. Kiratdesh is the land where early kiratas dwelt. This estate includes Entire Northern Eastern parts of India, including west bengal, Assam,Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh,Bihar,Nepal,Bhutan and some parts of Orissa. I urge all kiratis to unite and break free from India. Free Kiratdesh.

If you really want to analyze the viability of the small state then do cross verify the revenues of these area. These areas are entirely different then WB and the mind-set there. Having a separate state will make it more viable then with WB

First of all to TMC Leader, Gorkhaland was always in a request and demand since a century ago its not from now and sudden, Lack of development, facilities, unemployment are the reasons. The Bengal govt has always supressed our hilly brothers and sisters torture and try to dominate them, this is how the Gorkhaland was born. So as an Indian they must get seperate state.
Secondly to BJP MP, we cannot just sympathize but you must considered our gorkhas brothers & sisters requirement and gives us separate state likewise 29 different states in india. Hope you know this when the war begins in the boarders than its our Gorkha brothers martyr in the borders. They protect you and 1.34 billion ppl in India, 70% soldeirs are Gorkhas in Indian Army, several Gorkha regiments, you must considered seriously and accept and agree for the Gorkhaland.
Thridly to Ms Neera Chandhoke, which political dangerous you are talking about, when the Telagana demanded and finally seperated from Andhra Pradesh, when Jharkahnd seperated from Bihar and form different states, likewise 29 states has formed so far in India, now you are talking about
Political dangerous, soverienty and etc, where were your Inward Looking, principles and Mission When India was divided into tiny groups and forms 29 states. When your principles and Mission could stop being divided Politically India and form states and how can you say its dangerous so and so
GORKHALAND A SEPERATE STATE SHOULD FORM NOW..

Why is Prashant Tamang on the show? He has no idea about the movement at all. Even Roshan Giri is not someone who should be there representing Gorkhaland. Better speakers should have been on the show. A lot of matter was left unsaid and the Gorkhaland issue predictably turned political which it should not have at all.

It is very easy for the people like you to sit under the AC and play with people's feeling and I would like to say the NDTV news channel learn something from the Republic TV. If you want to show the real news collect the original peoples not the people who are together and they talk according to your plan. I am From Assam and I really support from my heart the demand of Gorkhaland. You just created a debate without any knowledge of why Gorkhas want Gorkhaland... Shame on you all you call yourself an Indian by insulting one community for the other. What do you know about the history? Please it's my urgent request don't hurt the wonded Gorkhas any more because they are also present in the borders protecting you. I would suggest you to support The Gorkhaland and try to know the pain of the Gorkha community...
