  • 2012 Toyota Tacoma Door Lock Actuator Repair…. Fix it for Free!!
    Recently this drivers side door lock actuator decided to stop functioning consistently. It got to the point where it was only working about 20% of the time. Its operation was very intermittent. The locks could still be locked with the key, and the lock lever. But the power locking function was not working most of the time.
    I have always preferred to attempt a repair, before going down the route of a component replacement. There are several reasons for this. To start I would rather have the OEM part in the car than a rebuilt or remanufactured part. I also strongly prefer to use OEM parts and not aftermarket items, especially when it comes to electrical/mechanical parts like a door lock actuator. Also get enjoyment from repairing something that wasn’t working, rather than replacing it. And obviously it saves either myself or the customer money.
    In this case I had a few suspicions to what was preventing this door lock from operating correctly. In the video I walk you through the steps to remove the actuator, get it disassembled. Once we have it apart and on the bench I cover the area’s and items that you should be taking a close look at.
    I mention this in the video and it is important for me to mention this here again. This approach and repair applies for much more than this door lock actuator. I have performed this same type of repairs to window regulators, starter motors, many door locks and actuators…. Really anything that has electric motors, with moving parts. Getting fresh grease on all of the moving and pivoting parts, inspecting the operation of the micro switches, plus addressing the brushes and contacts on the motors almost always fixes the issue. I have had great success with this approach and it has certainly saved myself and customers a considerable amount of money.
    Thank you for taking the time to watch the video!

    Sometimes all ya need is a little disassembly and a thorough shaft cleaning. Bravo AutoTechNick

    Excellent words of wisdom. A little time and effort goes a long way and teaches you at the same time. Much better approach than just blasting parts at the problem!

    I wish it was this easy but my door won’t open sounds like the locks work but handles won’t trigger the latch

    Crazy, this makes sense.. my locks 2006 tacoma don’t work in the morning when it’s cool, but work in the afternoon when it’s warmer. Could be failed grease and motor.. I think I would replace the entire unit if I did the repair!

    Finallly, a down to point video with plenty of detail to get the job done. I have the 2nd gen Taco Truck that has the two front doors causing me this problem & now thanks to you, I can take my path to resolve my doors as well, I appreciate this very well done tutorial video.
    Cheers,

    Used a new aftermarket motor and now when I “unlock it” it unlocks, locks, and locks again. Is this a “timing or clocking” issue or did I buy the wrong motor?

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  ปีที่แล้ว

      Don, that could be cause by a number of things. It could be the clocking of the motor. Or it could be a micro switch that is reading incorrectly. Is just the motor in the actuator aftermarket, or is the whole actuator aftermarket?

    Question....my truck doesn't lock the doors when I take off. I only hear a small noise. it's a 2014 toyota tacoma, thanks

      If all four locks are not locking, it is unlikely that all four actuators are suffering from the same or a similar issue that I cover in this video, since the odds of all four failing at once is incredibly low.

      When u take off? Like put in in gear and drive? Tacomas don’t lock when put in gear if that’s your concern.

    Vapor barrier adhesive... the plastic tears easily, so dont pull on it. Instead, a putty knife against the adhesive works well. I am disgusted by the over-use of plastics in modern cars - bet these door mechanisms never make it to the 30 year mark. If anyone has and likes this vehicle... buy replacements, keep them bagged and away from summer heat, and out of any sunlight
