      😂 and who has ever seen coffee b-roll in the cinema. Coffee b-roll is never cinematic, it’s Youtubic. B-roll doesn’t even exist in cinema, it’s an old ENG broadcast term that Peter McKinnon confused his minions into adopting for random shots of anything that isn’t him talking into his camera.

  • @Notxarb
    @Notxarb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was actually in the middle of trying to figure out a rig for my mirrorless. I was thinking of playing around with putting weight further away from the center of gravity but is still balanced when you hold the handle.
    Because right now, I have a good amount of weight on the camera but I can tell that my side to side twisting motion needs more weight and think more weight away from the center of gravity would help?
    physics...

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah you’re def thinking deep on it hah!!! For side to side movements (whip pans etc), I try to increase my contact points for more control. For more tracking type side movements, I let gravity hold the weight down but keeping a light touch on the top handle

    This video was awesome. Too the point and super helpful. Any recommendations on how to make a mirrorless setup have more weight without adding like a monitor and battery packs? I have a cage and a top handle as of right now.

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly that’ll make the most sense. It’s be silly to just add random weight, better to add useful weight. A monitor helps a shit tone, and never hurts to have a good battery that’ll last you forever.

      I def like the look of it. I jsut hate how people think it’s like a make it or break it feature, as if it’s going to make their work look better. I'm totally agree with you but I need my gimbal, I shot with a fuji xt3 (no IS, no ibis) and without the gimbal, my image shakes too much, for me its it's unusable. Maybe I should add more weight (a monitor, extra batteries could help) but even with this extra weight I don't know if the final image would be useful. For the moment I'll stick to my gimbal, but for sure, if someday I get a Komodo or a more weighted camera, I'll use it without a gimbal because I love the movement it comes out!

  • @shawn5210
    @shawn5210 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can I use a gimbal turned off just to add weight to make my shots look smoother?
    Nah seriously I have started going handheld recently after using a gimbal extensively and it really works for some scenarios. It all depends on what you are shooting. Dynamic shots like in this video, hand held is better but on shots with lots of camera movement and not much subject movement then gimbal it better for me.

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is nice to see you don't need the Komodo to get the Komodo look. Hand-held with the R5 looks good. Lol.
    As far as needing a gamble you have two different issues to solve.The R5 on a gimbal with AF can give you the same hand held look that your are doing with it weighted down. In fact it can do more and save you a ton of time. The Komodo get's rigged up and you have a much bigger gamble. With Komodo's global shutter you have a less active image compared to the R5 and cinema cameras. You're kinda trying to separate what the advantages of global shutter and saying it's your camera work and not global shutter. Well its the combination of both. Shots that would be unusable without global shutter now can be used.

      That’s not the point 🙄🤦🏽. I wasn’t going for a gimbal look. I was going for a HANDHELD look. There’s a way to get it and a way not to get it. And I disagree. The arri has rolling shutter and I frequently see it in films. NO ONE GIVES A SHIT THO BECAUSE ITS A FILM and not some stupid TH-cam video. I hope that helps ya understand the point now.

      @@cammackey I understand the point. My point was with the R5 and AF tracking a gimbal makes sense. You can get a handheld look with a gamble. You have to adjust the sensitivity setting to be much tighter. You also have to treat the gamble very different to get the handheld look you get. I love the handheld action that you produce. It's awesome. Cine-cameras also treat motion cadence much differently. So yeah Arri and rolling shutter is not the same as a mirrorless footage that has micro jitters, frame warp and has the catch up to a clean image after everything falls apart. And all that has nothing to do with hand-held movement. Motion blur covers some of that up like you stated in your video but sensor read-out becomes an issues with mirrorless cameras. My point is you can use the gimbal to get the same hand held look that you're getting with the R5.

      @@cammackey Let's reverse what you are doing and use a much bigger camera like the Arri Alexa LF and rig. Now what do you have to do to get the same hand held footage you get with the Komodo? Now you don't have global shutter and smaller form factor of the Komodo. The minute you say you want hand held with traditional cine rigs the shit hits the fan. I will say gimbals are way over used and used the wrong way.
