For those wondering how we captured my perfect audio in the house while I was talking about lighting... we used a toilet paper roll. For post processing we placed the roll in a bowl of warm water and sloshed it around.
I really don't want this style of video to become too trendy.... Whoever is watching: Please don't tell your friends about this channel! I'm joking but I'm also not! Love your style; fresh not "trendy"and to the point! Kudos!
The only thing to note here (which was touched upon in the video) is that you will need a massive amount of light to compete with the daylight coming through large windows. Here they're using 2x Aperture 300s, which are roughly equivalent to a 1K HMI. That's a lot of light! Alternately you can choose a tighter shot and move your light source in closer to the subject. Just be aware that you won't be able to pull this off with a 20W LED panel.
It's great to see someone embrace bright, cheery, high key lighting for a change! Many shooters default to dark and moody "cinematic" (ha!) lighting for everything they shoot. That treatment doesn't fly for a lot of commercial and corporate work. The 7' umbrealla is a good alternative to a large diffusion frame. I can't fit a 4x4' frame into my car, but I could find room for a large umbrella when collapsed. Q: Was the lighting difficult for Michelle to deal with? Overly strong lighting can be really tough on some talent's eyes. She doesn't appear to be squinting, so I guess it was fine for her.
Thanks! Yeah it wasn’t too bright for her. I’ve noticed diffused light even if it’s bright usually isn’t a problem. I think it’s important to have the lights already on and running when the subject enters the room. If a light is turned on once they sit down they might comment about the brightness more often
@@EpicLightMedia A trick that can help is to have the talent close their eys and "look" directly into the light. This will allow their pupils to partially adjust to the light. Then, have them redirect their "look" towards the camera (or interviewer) position before opening their eyes. This can help people who have overly sensitive eyes.
@@EpicLightMedia Thanks once again for a tip I can use on set. Every detail is important -- in a days shoot -- when how comfortable your model or client "feels" when the camera's roll -- grateful !
People love you the way you talk and explained things clearly, not the other two guys .You have the skills and way of transmitting information so maybe you can teach to a university when you retire .
You are amazing. The only channel I am aware of that asks to unsubscribe and dislike you. That definitely deserves like. Majority of so-called youtubers are annoying for constantly asking for likes and whatever. And you are the opposite. Awesome.
Your channel is so much more informative than those of the people you mentioned at the outset. I enjoy a lot of their content. But your content is invaluable.
I'm a photography student, and this is better than anything I've seen in a textbook. Showing the "low effort Zoom meeting" baseline indicates what to expect - and to fix - before lighting and each step is clearly explained in context. You worked with existing light in ways I would not have tried to produce quality results with less equipment and labor. And as a still photographer working solo, less is always more. Incidentally, I can guarantee that umbrella will work with HMIs - a lot of traditional strobe heads had 500w halogen modelling lights and those big 4800Ws flashtubes get pretty toasty.
Absolutely loving these. Could you please make a video about exporting and uploading settings. Your videos looks so rich and crisp, despite TH-cam compression. Would love to know what you recommend we do when it comes to exporting and uploading.
Yeah I've been wondering the same thing! And maybe talk a little about settings up your monitor for editing, I noticed my tv looks very different from my 4K IPS Monitor. Whats the way to setup your monitor so your exports look as great as possible on all kinds of devices?
This guy is really sharing industry know-how and real professional insights rather than just drawing attentions to get views with very few real content like many “TH-camr” do 🎉
Me: *starts the video* Video: starts with skip ad button Me: The button is wrongly placed and it appeared right away, probably fake... Video: plays Me: ok fine *clicks the ‘button’ Video: doesn’t do anything Me: *clicks again* Video: still playing Me: ...dang it, I fell for it
I'm so glad you talked about raising the Aperture/TStop value when changing to tighter lens. This is so often overlooked, even by seasoned pros. It is definitely not common knowledge. Everyone must have skipped that day of school.
The sad part about these videos is that, when they end, I know that I’ve released the maximum amount of dopamine in my brain for a while. The next coming days will be dull, lacking anything exciting or interesting. I won’t be happy, nor will I be able to enjoy a full erection either. I’ve learned to cope with it, but I will still pass every coming day wishing for yet another ELM video.
In reverence for Potato Jets dog dying, I am going to call a temporary moratorium on being snarky towards him. . . You know what I really hate about you: you know way too much about this stuff. I tune in to look at the pretty girl and I end up learning about lighting. BTW I love the dogs!
2:34 why do u put the umbrella that far from the lights? does it matter? could u for example bring the lights closer to the umbrella and dim them a little down? or just take the umbrella back close to the lights? or its all the same? thanks
Good question. I like my diffusion as close to the subject as I can and the lights as far away as I can. It fills more or the diffusion and makes the light softer when it’s farther away. Also because of the inverse square law with lighting it makes for a more evenly lit subject and scene with lights farther away from the source
Perfect blend of straightforward tips with some creative levity sprinkled in. Getting really annoyed with all the channels forcing in 10 minutes of vlog content around 2 minutes of half thought out camera review or lighting techniques
ELM is a filmmaker's best kept secret on youtube. It's like, I want you guys to succeed and be way more popular, but I also don't want everyone to know about this amazing channel. Haha
Nice job on this video. A note on the umbrella. You often have to be careful that the light isn't in front of the camera where if you don't flag flag it, it washes out the blacks or even flares. Plus, if you plan to use it outside, it requires a windless morning.
Thank you! I've been fighting a room with a lot of windows and (even filming on iPad) your suggestions of a high key next to the windows and a bounce have helped immensely.
You guys are seriously the real deal and are such a great team.. I have now finally learned what I needed to know to use the 190d lights I have.. Congratulations 99% of TH-camrs in this space who claim to be industry experts and influencers fail the value test and fail to disclose the actual skills needed.. So I answered the survey today about what to do next in the community section, Plus your showreel shows the skill set you actually have.. Congratulations. And I also agree that youtube does not need another expert product review..only 2% ticked that LOLS My point is that you both actually have real-world knowledge and a cool presentation technique. I'm extremely sorry for being SUBSCRIBED to your channel. That golden tip "closing down the apurture for close up shots" thanks a lot. love your dark humor!

Many years of marriage have prepared me for this... you can’t shoo me away from your channel, I’m inmune to your abuse... I’m also liking this video and staying subscribed... there’s nothing you can do.
Interesting idea to use the umbrella. I come from the photography world and actually have one of those, but I'm often left wondering how to mount a light panel to it. Never thought to use a grip head, might have to try that on my next shoot.
Yesterday I made a note to research how to light commercials because of an upcoming project... And boom this shows up in my feed first thing in the morning lol
Your video helped me tremendously, dude. But the reason people don't use big white umbrellas is because you're losing A TON of light by reflecting half of it on the inside of the umbrella. That's the reason you're not getting enough output. A bowens-mount softbox would change your life. Keep up the good work. Your channel is great
The umbrella idea is brilliant. Much faster than setting up even an Aputure Dome MkII which is my current go-to setup. Thank you sir for the amazing content!
A 5 in 1 reflector works also great! I have a 200x150cm that has a great diffusion surface. The umbrella would let more light through, I think, so it's also a nice tool.

that explains it XD haha nice video mate! :)
I thought my headphones were broken.
double or single layer? you can't just omit important information like that!
You must have spent some serious cash on that TP roll. Move over Arri, audio's coming to town.
U still have toilet paper? U damn rich guy. U got too much money from advertising. Need to unsubscribe again.
Thank you for actually making this look like a real commercial not some b-roll montage.

Love the "Ferris" ending..."Why are you still here?"

you wont often get to see these type of videos for free..hats off Sir..Thanks for all your amazing lighting contents
I don't understand how 41 seconds of this lady telling me not to subscribe made me subscribe. Really not what I'm used to seeing on TH-cam.

Looks like a Kino Flo, or Titan Tube, maybe a Quasar light.

One of
the best channels out there, with incredible in between tips!🔥
I like your sense for detail with regard to the aesthetic bokeh when using different focal lengths.
What you explain starting at 7:00 is an axial cut (some kind of jump cut called „cut in“ ).
There are 4 ways to implement those axial cuts:
1. Crop-In in post
2. Multiple camera setting like here: th-cam.com/video/UoFTXMtucBU/w-d-xo.html (ok, that is not really an axial cut because you leave unavoidable the optical axis)
3. One cam, same distance, different focal lengths
4. One cam with one focal length and different distance
Crop-In (1) in post has „bad“ bokeh and looks steril.
Multiple camera setting (2) won’t work with Michelle, because she is „spiking“ only one camera.
Method 3 works for you.
But what speaks against method 4? You stay with your 50 mm lens and then you shorten or halve the distance to Michelle for the close-up. Ok, you then get also a shallower dof and a more distinctive bokeh, but you could fine tune it with your mentioned ND-method.
I know, with method 4 you change the perspective while with method 3 you stay in your perspective. But this change in perspective could give you some extra aesthetic touch.
Which 3 lights there?
FUNNY HOW THE VIDEO STARTS AND FUNNY ENDING :)) , THE BETWIN IS VERY INTERESTING AND VERY GREAT EXPLAINING ABOUT LIGHT FOR PHOTOGRAPHY :)
I DID A THUM-UP ABOUT THE VIDEO :)
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
I like that you’re straight to the point, I learn so much from your video compare to others, my favourite channel of the year 😆
What an amazing tip sir, thankyou very much. One of the most important lessons.
