Hey you beautiful people just want to clarify something :) The point of this video is not to say you will never have use for a gimbal. There's definitely amazing uses for them that can enhance your film, just know that you can still make amazing films without one. PS: If you want to buy a new gimbal dont let me stop you, its all about intention and how you use it

I had the ronin s, sold it a few years back, and now just ordered the new rs3 pro, because I am going to be shooting cars, and my clients want the gimbal look.
But I 100% agree with this message, Working for over a year WITHOUT a gimbal, I feel like I was able to learn the ins and outs of my camera, learn how to have steadier hands, and figure out how to get nice “raw” shots.

I thought the same thing and was telling my gf last night how much I hate social media anymore. Is a hard cycle to navigate through. Being the creators that aspiring filmmakers/photographers look up to get paid to do reviews on these new products. Making people think they have to buy that camera that has 50 megapixels or that gimbal that has raven eye. The truth is all of these are just tools to help you with your creativity. The best camera to have is the one you are shooting on cause that means you are actually creating something. Social media also robs everyone of creativity, being we all just copy each other. I started shooting with a handheld rig not long ago and prefer it over a gimbal any day. Way more organic. There is a time and a place for a gimbal and it just depends on your style. Brandon Li uses them all the time, but that contributes to his style. Get out there and start creating to find your own. Experiment with gear until you find what resonates with you. Gear doesn't make you creative, your mind does. Thanks for reading :)

I'm a recovering gimbal addict. At one point I owned five and barely even used them. Now I'm down to just two and I haven't used one of them in over a year or two, and the one I do 'use,' I have literally only used once this year. The filmmaking culture is so focused on the gear that we completely overlook what we're supposed to be doing with that gear.

Sound advice. We love using gimbals but everything you say is true. It also takes a bit of effort to 'learn' to shoot handheld after years of using a gimbal and defaulting to a certain pattern of filming. Different tools for different purposes.

This past weekend I filmed a 2 day event at the race track. My gimbal was out for repair so almost every shot I did was handheld. I didn’t find myself needing the gimbal once which is crazy to say cause I used to only use gimbals for everything! Point being there’s a lot of cool shots you can get without one and even simulate using handheld motion and tripods/monopods

  • @nightdonutstudio
    @nightdonutstudio ปีที่แล้ว +12

I do feel gimbal is overused nowadays. And especially those with a lot motion combined with trasition. They look cool at first glance but will get dizzy. However I still think for most commercial, wedding. They prefer clean smooth gimbal type of shots. It also looks "professional" for consumer. But for film, documentary, travel video, I think organic handheld shots looks good.

After buying a gimbal a few years ago, I found I didn't use it as much as my other support equipment or shooting handheld. I do find my cellphone gimbal more useful because it keeps my fingers off the lenses ... I use it basically as handle. I haven't planned on upgrading my old camera gimbal. It does fine when I do use it. Good show!

This is such a helpful video, it really cemented my thoughts on gimbals and that the proper use of gimbals is most important. I think for me (example) if i was making a hotel review video, i would use a gimbal or like you stated, a wedding event, but most of the time i just make basic videos around town or on vacation. Another thing too, is that shooting handheld helps me be more creative and challenges me to practice new shooting angles, stabilizing my body and finding shots from different perspectives. I like gimbals, but i like handheld a tad bit more! Thanks! 😀

Just because it´s new and gadgety features doesn´t mean that it will actually get you better results. The promo footage from the RS3 still has the wobble issues, that I find on my RS 1. Yeah it can lock itself but that won´t change the footage at all :)

Dude, yes hell yes, I know and love that song, it means a lot to me!! I felt it deep the first time I heard it at a small/intimate festival, it was literally raining at the time (maybe why the dj put it on), and I distinctly recall making an anchor memory of those there, sharing that moment with other smiling dancing people, open to the rain, the physical feeing of being alive, feeling my feeling for me.
But I didn’t hear much of the context of the rest of the lyrics to the song - fast forward several years, and it comes up on my Apple Music while goin’ for a emotionally-charged walk. I was like woah, and had to stop and sat on a rock and read thru all the lyrics while listening thru the song several more times and feelin’ it, opening up the parts of myself inside that were resonating…
But I didn’t put 2 and 2 together and realize, ‘til this moment, that the songs in each of those memories are the same song!! Wow, fk’n epic. Legendary song “Unwritten” is haha! I totally agree :D

If your camera or lens have good enough stabilization (IBIS, OIS), or your software have good stabilization (gyro or plain software) then you will be better without a gimbal. Believe me, gimbals are a hassle, and working without gimbal is faster and easier and allow more movements, better manual focus, etc

I've been rocking with a GH5 for years. The IBIS on it is soooooooo good that I legit don't even need a gimbal, save for shots that require that signature floaty gimbal look. Copped a Weebill S when it first dropped, and hardly ever used it. Sold that and got a Crane 3s on sale for the same price I paid for the Weebill S. A literal steal!
I still don't really use the gimbal much still lol

love this man! Bought a brand new drone, 3 years later never and I mean NEVER NOT ONCE flew it! Bought a brand new Gimbal, two year later, my camera did not even touched it! My logic nowdays ... if you needed it, you would not have learned about it from an awesome TH-camr lol!!

You don't need a TH-camr telling you what gear to use. TH-camr is all about views. The filmmaker is all about telling the story. So many hours of production were wasted to film behind the scene and show off how excellent, and professional you guys are. Creating this dream world for beginners. When in the end, it is a job. And as further you go this dreamland vanishes very fast because it's a hard job.
