I got the opportunity to use a gimbal in my last internship and I was so excited to try it out... then I realized shooting with it at basketball championships felt so limiting... especially since everything else I did was handheld before. You def hit the nail on the head, I see a lot of times it's great for establishing shots, walking and talking, etc. but in the moment stuff causes you to feel limited in what you shoot with one.
Buying my gimbal was one of the best decisions I made, but it serves a purpose. Doesnt get used except for very specific work. Its a very on basis thing for people
Cheers for the quality on this video! Valid points, clear examples and a stellar look. I'm currently selling my old gimbal as it doesn't support my new Sony anymore. You're video confirmed my feeling that I won't buy a new one. Enjoyed watching, thanks!
Great video! I see exactly where you’re coming from on the subject of gimbals. I personally held off from purchasing a gimbal for several years because I prefer the freedom of handheld shooting. However, last month I actually purchased a used Ronin SC for $125 in good condition. After learning how to properly balance it, I used it on a outdoor event and was frustrated because I’m used to using my 7’ external monitor to help me see my subject in focus, and the phone as a monitor isn’t the same. Gimbals serve their purpose, and I will practice more with it but at the end of the day, I prefer rigging out my micro four thirds camera and having manual functionality.
Do you like the Ronin? 125 is a deal! I was looking at one last month apparently its discontinued. I got a weebill this month and I love it, I learned it in 3 days, the first two days of owning it I liked to take it back lol. But I figured it out and now I love it. Keep at it I think you'll like the capabilities it gives you.
@@-Jay_Is It’s growing on me lol, but basically I know I’ll have to keep using it to better understand it, seeing that I’ve mostly filmed handheld. I like the fact that I have a Ronin but my first ever gimbal was for my phone which was a Z SmoothQ.
What would you recommend if i want to video my soccer games and have the camera automatically track the ball? Budget version I want to spend no more than ~300 on it possible?
I couldnt agree more. My son was getting married and I used my Iphone with a DJI gimbal on all of vacation videos. So instead of spending $10K on a videographer I spent it on Black Magic Pocket 6k and all the rigging and lenses. Then came choice of gimbal. I didnt see many DJI RS2 on YT for a product review. I saw it on DJI site and bought from B&H. Come to find out I ended up buying a professional gimbal right at the release. At the time there was no how to videos. 6 months later every TH-camr had reviews and tutorials. I could have been one of them, as I never am the first to buy anything. I now do mostly all handheld and the BMPCC6K now has gyro stabilization and with a 3 point contact its almost as good as a gimbal.
i am not sure if you can update the firmaware thats what I would do first and then I would of calibrate afte turn it on if has that future i had issues like you said in reason 1 with my crane m3 but i started calibrating it before fully using it an I had no issues with it ever since
Nice opinion. I also love handheld especially for sports. What's your hot take on the movement towards more vertical content and filming more in that aspect?
I'll always continue to shoot 16x9 (landscape) when I shoot sports - it future proofs it a lot in case something on TV/Broadcast/TH-cam requires it later on. I shoot in 4K so I'm usually okay to crop into my footage!
I bought one and actually took it back due to what a pain in the ass it was. I have a little one for my phone that I use every now and then, but I totally agree with you. GO AVS!!!
In my opinion, most people who use a gimbal all the time, most of the time, are like that tourists with a camera in their hand who walks around the city and films practically everything they see in front of them. Gimbal, if necessary, should be used 5 to 10% of the time.
I think phone is a great start if you can't afford a camera right off the rip - but you'll find quickly there are certain limitations to phone videography!

Agreed, I love my gimbal couldn't do much without it.
Your handheld shots look amazing! 🔥
exactly the video i needed to see. thanks for making this bro. gimbal shots are sorta like drone shots. for specific shots.
I’m returning my RS3 tomorrow. Fuck this. If a client ever asks for one, well they’re paying for it.

Thanks so much for this Nils, appreciate it so much!
Great video, making me rethink buying one this summer.
Glad you found it valuable!

@@Inspirewithdrones3342 right. I do handheld as well so it's a game changer for me.
Did you mean 7 inch external monitor?
@@paulnbrenda358 sure did! Thx for catching that bro!
100% agreed.
great vid!
Make sense. I know a cinematographer who’s bread and butter is hand held and uses stability in post.
Post is always a risky thing
@@slurp3194 it can be, but this guy is really good

I have the crane 3s for my FX6 and the crane 3m for my ZV1 😉 but in the most situations I film without gimbal 👌

How do you feel about monopods for shooting football?
Tell me about it man. Hand held all the way!
I've already have a gimbal, your opinon makes me change my mind. And, please let me know your camera rig when you film with hand held!!
I have a video on the channel that goes over this! But it's essentially a small rig cage with a top and side handle primarily.
What about steadycam?

Rig cage it is!!!! Perfect timing 😅💸💸

I use my phone for all my video, do you have a opinion on that?

Been doing this for 4 years and I almost never use my gimbal 😂
Please give me your gimbal. I’m starting videography and I just have Sony a6000
and a sigma 30mm 1.4, just missing a gimbal😅
Ahaha I still use it from here to there! It comes in handy, but it’s not necessary!!
1000% for action that isn't planned, i.e. sports they just aren't it. Walkout, pregame, halftime, etc. it's all good. For the actual game action, nope
WRONG. hahahaha Jkjkjk.
Gotta make that response video now ehhhh 👀
Oh you don’t know how to use it, you’re probably not balancing it right
Jokes aside though another great video!
Probably not eh - what an amateur I am hahaha.
