I'm an atheist. I've always believed that religion was devised by people who don't exist to give weak minded people something to cling to. They say that money is the root of all evil, but religion is the root of all wars
It's fear mongering, if we weren't so afraid of death religion wouldn't have a hold on people. Because our brain cannot comprehend not existing we can't picture it we seek confort. Religion gives confort in return they ask for everything you money, your morals, your life, your property, your freedom. It's a dangerous cult with a special tax system and a history that would make Hitler blush.
"religion was devised by people who don't exist" I understand that this must be a typo. What did you mean to say? I think religion was created first as an explanation, then later to control the masses. I give to you, my son, the following parable: A: Where does the rain come from? B: It must have been a dog. A: A dog? B: Sorry, I got that backwards. A: dog...so, a god? B: Sure. A: What's a god? B: I don't know. I guess it's a being so powerful that it can cause the rains to fall. A: We'd better be nice to the rain god then, or we won't have any of these delicious turnips next year. B: Hey, you've given me an idea. You know how we don't have any police on this planet yet... A: What's a planet? B: Sorry. You know how police haven't been invented yet... A: Yes. They sure would have come in handy when Jedediah was coveting Harry Swartz's wife. B: Uh...yea. So, if there's a god who can make it rain, we can have a god that burns people for eternity for various heinous acts. A: You mean...like murder, or not believing in that god, even if you've never heard of him? B: I like the way you think!
I went to a religious school and I remember clearly it lost me when I realised all the sermons and hymns were basically saying God is merciful if you praise him, follow his rules at all times, sing about him etc and if you don't you'll be punished for eternity. And I thought that's not a merciful benevolent being that's a North Korean dictator.
Watch the documentairy The primordial code from Marijn Poels. A part of it sheds lights on religion and where it came from. Be aware though, it changed the perspective of the world in many ways of all the people I know that watched it.
The Church Of England currently has over 10 billion pounds in investments. Yet they still ask for donations for the upkeep of their buildings. Such hypocrisy.
The Catholic church has between 70-250 billion dollars in wealth (depending on what assets are included) yet still preys on the belief of people who can barely afford to eat for more money
Right but what’s the key there. They done force you to pay they “ask” everything is a voluntary donation. You can go to a Christian church your whole life and never pay a Penny and they won’t look at you any different. My church actually helps people out to. They will buy people bibles, and other stuff. Nothing is forced. I feel like you’re trying to insinuate by your quote that they are stealing money from people because they have so much money already and keep asking for donations. Personally none of the churches by me are anywhere near that rich. The pastors don’t make a ton of money or anyone else that works there. They do it for their love of god. And again I might add that they will never make you pay a penny.
Ricky is spot on. Religion was rammed down my throat at an early age. It wasn’t until years later that I had more questions that no one could answer. Any institution that is based out of fear and control is wrong. If others wish to believe in God, that is their choice. I don’t need a book to tell me how to act. Being kind should be instinctive.
Yeah, and don’t come up with the “god has his mysterious ways” phrase, cause even you hear the ridiculousness of that, don’t you? And standing by your own ignorance doesn’t prove you’re humble. Sorry, if I offend, or if I’m not “politically correct”. We should all just get over it..
"Convenient isn't it born in America I'm probably a Christian, born in India I'm probably a Hindu, if I'm born in Pakistan I'm probably a Muslim. Funny how where your born makes your faith the correct one, everyone else is wrong though. Lucky that isn't it?" Well put Ricky, if everyone followed the religion of Gervais..........the world would be a perfect place, no need for "gods"!! Religion is a stop gap for knowledge of the uneducated and unfortunately they use it for evil things. That's why I believe exactly the same thing as Ricky, always have and always will. You don't need a god belief to be a good and moral person!! He speaks brilliantly!!
They say be careful what you think as it could come true, but isnt that how we create things! by thought to action to creation. we are the gods, We must beleive in our selves and maybe we would all be one, They say god is all around us, well yes we are everywhere and all we created is, wether it was a name for what we see or anything we created. Put it out there in the Etha as some say,, that is energy, we are the creators. SO be careful what you think :)
I don't always agree with Ricky because I don't give anyone a blanco-check. Why would I? So far, It turned out, that after hearing Ricky, I agreed in every case he presented to me. For me, that's different.
I have the greatest respect for Ricky's straight forward, common sense, intelligent straight talking comments and views. He says what a lot of people think . He tells the truth. He says it as it is . The onl7 eople who criticise his comments and truthful common sense views are those who feel threatened by the truth being spoken on TV and social media for all to jear
We need more Ricky 'minds' in the universe..wouldnt it be a nicer place to live. You make so much sense and its refreshing to people like myself..Dont ever stop what you do 😊
I'm totally sick of sub-titles being splattered over so many videos, including shorts which are the width of the average cell phone and yet around a third of it is taken up with incorrect subtitles that scroll across the middle. It's worse than when youtube started putting pawnails (oversized thumbnails) over the last minute or two of a lot of videos so you can't see what is going on. Oh and yeah, Ricky Gervais doesn't bring anything new to the religion conversation but what he does say is delivered well. He's an absolute pommy gem.
I've never been able to get an answer from a religious person about why they believe in the religion they were born into and not some other religion. It's pretty obvious. And Ricky is right, God or gods are not the problem. Religion is.
When you say that to christians, you can be more restrictive: Which of the hundreds to thousands of CHRISTIAN denominations should I choose? What are the criteria to pick a correct one and not a false one? The range is gigantic, and all christians believe that what they believe is correct. The range varies from it does not matter what you believe, as long as you live a decent life and respect the others to you MUST believe the Bible is LITERALLY correct, you MUST believe the timeline that anglican bishop Ussher set up, when reality conflicts with the Bible, reality is wrong. That might make them be even more at a loss - that their ONE perfect God with his ONE perfect Word and ONE correct way to salvation splinters up in ultimatively 2.7 billion different denominations - one for each christian (would you dig deep enough over what normal christians do not think about, what they actually think).
As addition, your last sentence is underappreciated. Atheist let themselves be dragged in too much by apologists in discussions about whether one can believe that a nebulous, unspecific supernatural (= undetectable) God exists. Atheists would not give an eff about that whether one believes in whatever. What REALLY concerns atheist activists is that what they have to deal with in REALITY, with the people. What the belief does with the people, how it changes (suppresses) their thinking, how they look at the world at the world around them, how they judge the people around him, how they act (against other people) How it makes you vulnerable to be manipulated, how you fall for ideologies that make use of the thinking patterns that a believer has. I wish the famous atheists would state that clearer Christopher Hitchens could be brilliant in his rants about the evilness of the churches, but that was all he had. I saw a debate with the topic "Does God exist?" that imho he lost spectacularly, because he was unable to adress the topic at all (by listing unresolvable contradictions in the properties that are assigned to God), but went on his usual anti-belief tirade.
@@feedingravensIf we're talking about Christianity, denominations are a mixed bag. I don't understand all of the denominations and honestly I don't really care, but what does matter when it comes to Christianity is this. Jesus Christ came as God into the world to die on the cross for our error towards God. That Jesus was risen from the dead to conquer death and give us eternal life. For whoever believes will have salvation for simply trusting in Him. As for criteria to pick a correct denomination or a false one, well that IS very important. When you read how Christ lived through the gospals and the letters from the apostle Paul, you will be able to see the truth through the false.
When you are young you believe everything until you start thinking about it. I don't remember how old I was, but one day when I was praying very hard to the almighty god I wondered why we actually had to pray? God saw everything, didn't he? So he really had to have seen that the people we were praying for needed his help. Almost immediately I asked myself the question that god had to know and see and why didn't he help? He was almighty after all and this couldn't have been a lot of work for him. So I presented my problem to the local priest and he had a very good explanation: god had created us with a free will! The following week I asked the priest why hadn't god created us with a free will, but without the need to bash each other's skulls in? I never got an answer. Later I worked out the question a bit better, in a discussion with someone who wants to convince me of the existence of god I always start with the remark that people also have good sides, but some also very bad ones. After which I ask what my conversation partner would do if he saw someone abusing a very young child. Well, the answer is always clear: intervene immediately. Then I come up with the question why God who is all-powerful and sees everything, also that children are abused, but still does not intervene as my conversation partner would do. The conversation then always gets complicated and usually they quickly leave, probably wondering why their god does not intervene... does he perhaps enjoy it?
Something also to think about is why do people pray in the first place if god will never intervene because of the ‘free will’ bs. Like Yh Samantha god will answer your prayer so that your child can get better grades in school but he just ignores kids getting aids in Africa like cmon be real thiests.
@@v3xt__z0mbi37 Well, if prayer works, then god DOESN'T have a plan and he's not all knowing. Because how could a tiny idiotic human (compared to an all knowing god) come up with ANYTHING better than his All Knowing Perfect Plan...
I remember when I was very young, 7 or 6 maybe, I asked my mom, starting from the most absurd tale: is there really an easter bunny? My mom: no. Santa? No. God? She told me: Take your own conclusions 😂😂😂 so.... and I was raised Catholic anyway, I loved the Bible stories en lessons (for children) and the fantastic part of it. And when I was 13 I questioned a chrism teacher something that I found questionable at the time (I don t even remember at the time, because I loved that class foe the literature and interpreting parables) she simply answered: you don t come to the children's mass, do you? If you are not gonna be a practicing Catholic, then u musn't come to the classes anymore. Then it was it. I told my mom and she said: you must have the right to question everything there is, so, fell free to chose. I went for "scientific" spiritualism, that was even further in surrealism, then Buddhism, then, ok, enough. I believe a moral code and justice and that is enough for me.

As a religious person, I don't mind atheists as long as they don't hold a contemptuous attitude towards religious people. I understand why you don't believe. Why believe in what you can't see, smell, touch, taste or hear?
@@gamera5160 Yet YOU hold other religions in contempt. Big fan of the muslims who took down the towers or Sharia Law? How about Scientology? Big fan? " I understand why you don't believe. Why believe in what you can't see, smell, touch, taste or hear?" That's not the question you need to contemplate: it's WHY DO YOU BELIEVE - do you have GOOD VALID RATIONAL REASONS FOR YOUR BELIEFS?
One of the most important ideas presented or implied here is concerning the love of God. I have been saying for many years that real love is unconditional. The love of God always depends on the obedience of the recipient with the additional caveat that if the recipient doesn't obey, he or she will be punished. John 3:16 is often quoted by Christians when they try to explain what God's love really means, but if you read the context up to verse 21, you will see that God's love is conditional.
"Then he said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.'" (Luke 2:27) The laws in the Bible were written for the benefit of mankind. They're not conditions for love. They instruct us on how to love on another and how to love God. If you are not a kind, loving person, you freely deny God's love and grace and you cut yourself off from Him.
I'm not religious, but Christ's teachings seem to be good, it's his so called follower's different interpretation's of it that is dangerous and has caused so much bloodshed, been abused for power and riches and still is

@@smidlee7747 What you're suggesting is what's known as a "fallacy of composition". It the same as saying walls can't come from non-walls. "Emergent properties" is a concept found throughout nature. If you arrange bricks in a particular way, for instance, you get an emergent property called a wall that the individual bricks do not have. The same is with when you combine hydrogen and oxygen in a specific way. If you put them together in one way, you can make a bomb or rocket fuel. Put together in another way and it can become a water molecule that does not have the properties of each of the atoms by themselves. Get enough water molecules together and you can get an ocean that once again, does not have the properties of single water molecules. Life is an emergent property of certain types of matter. OMG! I love Ricky Gervais’ take on religion! I am on the exact same wavelength as him, I grew up in a very religious home (Penticostal UGH!!! 🤮). I had the bible forced down my throat from as far back as I can remember. Fortunately, I realized that it was all a load of BS. at a very young age (I’m thinking between 5 to 8 yrs). I drove my mother nuts asking questions about stuff they “taught” us in Sunday School (Get ‘em while they’re young!), I questioned EVERYTHING that didn’t make sense or sounded wrong and she had ZERO answers other than, “Because God said so.”, or, “Because the bible says so.” For example, I once asked her, “So, you can be a person who is inconsiderate, selfish, hateful or unkind, but because you worship god you’ll go to heaven. Whereas someone like me who is kind, polite, helpful, thoughtful and considerate will STILL go to hell because I don’t worship god?”. Her answer, “Yes.” Gee, thanks mom. I believe in one thing though, I believe that most, if not all, religions ultimately teach us hatred and intolerance towards others who look, act or believe differently than we do, and I find THAT to be the true evil. Oh, and one more thing, dogs ARE the best!! 🐶🐶🥰
I have my own personal faith. I do not like religion of any kind. What you're saying about these religious lunatics who believe as long as you pray to God, no matter what evil you have done while you're on this planet, then you will go to heaven is just madness, and it goes against the teachings of their christ. My older brother, who is not the brightest button, went to church a few years back, then came and told me that he had been speaking to a priest who told him if he repents all his sins before he dies he will go to heaven (how this priest, who is not allowed to have sex, for one thing, knows this information, is mystifying 😊) anyway, so i said to my brother, then that means Adolf Hitler who is one of the most evil man ever, when he was going to kill himself, and you had God waiting to give Adolf all of his wrath and send him to eternal hell, clever old Adolf, being one step ahead of God, repented all his sins, died, then got to heaven on a technicality, and you had God saying to old Adolf "Ahh, you crafty bugger, you, in you go my son" My brother said yeah. ???? If i had of had a gun i think i may have blown his brains all over my wall. lol. Unbelievable Man. Take Care man 👍
If you repent your sins then you will go to heaven. What a load of bullshit. Good old Adolf Hitler repented his sins just before he done himself in, then he was allowed into heaven on what is a technicality isn't it??? Unbelievable
Whatever you believe in to help you get through your World every day while not hurting or negatively impacting anyone else is exactly what you should believe in. No ifs, ands or buts. Live. Your. Life. It’s too fleeting to stress over it.
Interesting discussion with Morgan about what to expect at death. When a believer gets a diagnosis of a terminal disease, they are just as devastated as a non believer would be. Shouldnt they be jumping for joy? Like a kid counting down the days to the summer holiday or Christmas? But they dont. Faced with their own mortality deep down they know its all nonsense.
That's true. And while I don't claim to speak for any other atheist, I feel closer to a sense of excitement than dread when I think about my own mortality. I see it as an opportunity to either have a really big question answered or else to be completely extinguished which means it doesn't matter because I won't be there to be disappointed.
That's simply not true. The Christians I know who have faced death have all done so with dignity and with an even deeper belief in God. I don't know where you have done your research .

As a Christian I can say l,"Hate the sin, not the sinner." I love your up front humor and only have agree to disagree with you on who I pray to. Much continued success Sir
But what if the sin is just existing? That only works until the sin is being gay or not believing in god or even believing in a different god or anything else that isn't a choice (like being trans, even know the bible says nothing about it, so many Christians still hate it and call it sinful). Maybe the better thing to do is just not hate anything unless it's actively harming someone (which so many sins in the bible don't do). For example I don't hate religion, until it is harmful, people can believe whatever they like, it doesn't bother me (so long as they don't try to make everyone live by their religious beliefs) bit if it's harmful, like saying that you can't be who you are or don't get medical treatment or be violent towards that group of people or deny rights to women, or cut off specific body parts of children, etc then I would hate it. Someone believes in heaven and that a god is looking out for them, couldn't care in the slightest, you do you, if that brings you comfort then fine. Same with what you view as sinful, there's no reason to hate something that doesn't cause harm.
@@charlestownsend9280 I believe that most christians don't really think about what they read in the bible and just go with what they're told it means. Also, if there's no god then there's no such thing as sin.
I have my own personal faith. I don't believe in any religion. If you're a christian, then does that mean Hindu's, Buddhists, Muslims, Aboriginies, American Indians, Pagans have got it wrong because they don't believe in Christ? I like what Gandhi said "I really like your Christ, but i do not like your christians. They are so unlike your Christ" I have my own personal faith, but i know i could be wrong. It's something I've worked out myself, through learning, and what i've experienced while i've been on this planet.
I grew up Christian, but have dramatically evolved in my concept of the nature of God, which is consistent with some Christian belief systems: God is a verb, meaning God is love (or loving), and is manifest as the natural world. So, God is manifest from within us by being loving, and God is the natural world, existing separate from us in nature, whether or not humans exist.
100% no god exists in any religion, I once prayed, then I questioned Noah’s ARK. How did the Koalas and Kangaroos get to the ARK from Australia? How bout the FreshWater Fish ALL over the world? If you think they swam thru the ocean you’d be wrong. Question Everything
Well the existence of Noah’s ark neither proves nor disproves the existence of God. It certainly does make the Bible less likely to be the word of God but who knows? Perhaps God just liked the story so he kept it in. I would point more to the efficacy of prayer (known to be at best only as good as placebo) or the problem of evil (although that also does not disprove God, it just shows that if he exists, he’s not very nice).
@lidbass Excellent point about prayer. Even the Templeton Foundation, who were desperate for a positive outcome, were forced to concede that prayer is no more reliable than chance or luck. My question to an interventionist god is very simple - given the chaotic mess we have created for ourselves and the planet we inhabit, why the f#ck aren't you intervening? It's all your fault, and we've been waiting for you to show yourself for 2,000 years.

How was the universe/time and space created? Can nothing come from nothing? Or did something from beyond time and space, being timeless and spaceless (eternal and without body) create it?

When you say that to christians, you can be more restrictive:
Which of the hundreds to thousands of CHRISTIAN denominations should I choose?
What are the criteria to pick a correct one and not a false one?
The range is gigantic, and all christians believe that what they believe is correct.
The range varies from
it does not matter what you believe, as long as you live a decent life and respect the others to
you MUST believe the Bible is LITERALLY correct, you MUST believe the timeline that anglican bishop Ussher set up, when reality conflicts with the Bible, reality is wrong.
What the belief does with the people,
how it changes (suppresses) their thinking,
how they look at the world at the world around them,
how they judge the people around him,
how they act (against other people)
How it makes you vulnerable to be manipulated,
how you fall for ideologies that make use of the thinking patterns that a believer has.
I wish the famous atheists would state that clearer
Christopher Hitchens could be brilliant in his rants about the evilness of the churches, but that was all he had.
Well said.
Ignorance is bliss😅

If your going to use human beings killing each other 'in the name of' said religion, you should think about the people's decision making process. Are they twisting the religious message to benefit their own agenda, or does the religion deliberately say to do said action.
Also, if your best answer to your personal issues is to insult and mock then perhaps you should consider looking into the things you despise so much and understand them better. What you're suggesting is what's known as a "fallacy of composition". Brains are emergent properties of lifeforms.

I drove my mother nuts asking questions about stuff they “taught” us in Sunday School (Get ‘em while they’re young!), I questioned EVERYTHING that didn’t make sense or sounded wrong and she had ZERO answers other than, “Because God said so.”, or, “Because the bible says so.”
For example, I once asked her, “So, you can be a person who is inconsiderate, selfish, hateful or unkind, but because you worship god you’ll go to heaven. Whereas someone like me who is kind, polite, helpful, thoughtful and considerate will STILL go to hell because I don’t worship god?”.
Her answer, “Yes.”

That's true. And while I don't claim to speak for any other atheist, I feel closer to a sense of excitement than dread when I think about my own mortality.

You are strawmanning atheism by claiming it is something it is not. Why are you doing this? Dishonesty? Ignorance? Everyone who believes there is a god is a theist, and everyone else is not a theist.
Not a theist = lacks god belief = atheist.
thumbs down for the music that kicks in at the end blocking out what we was saying.
you have a healthy brain, are able to think rationally and logically...there is a quick way to find to atheism...:
study the Bible and this Christian God and read the old testament at least twice..
. success is guaranteed!!!!
the bible doesnt prove anything
@@Krishna.Mohan-m4tOP means reading the Bible should be enough to persuade you that it's all twaddle.
Can you quote the part of the Bible that convince you there is no evidence that the brain you are to think with has a Creator?
@@smidlee7747 I don't need a fairy tale book like the Bible, the Koran or the Torah for that. My excellent common sense is enough for that. And global science provides the evidence for it. those who are brainwashed by religions will never recognize otherwise their castle in the air would collapse....I have pity for these,,,I live now and they hope for better times after death...and feed paedo priests and their protectors.. .like in the dark middle ages

I love Ricky Gervais, and I agree with his view on religion. However im curious between 13.02-13.03 min. theres a picture of a book inserted. Kinda simalar to how they used to hide commercials (product placement) in the old days in the cinema 😅.
I'm not a religious believer in gods, I'm not Agnostic (whatever that is), I'm not Atheist (whatever that is). I'm just a person who does not know if a god or gods exist (because I can't know) but does not believe they do because there is just nothing that leads me to believe such nonsense. I cannot chose to believe a god exists anymore than I can honestly chose to believe Santa Claus exists. Faith is not a means of knowing anything, it is only a means to believe and I don't want to believe, I want to know. Therefore I have no use for this useless practice called faith. The problem with faith is that it is fraught with disappointment. Just ask anyone who has been ripped off or conned by someone they had faith in. Priests, fortune tellers, wives, friends, strangers, the list is endless. Faith has been proven to be an unreliable path to truth.
"The path to truth is littered with the bodies of the faithfully ignorant."
P.S. Great video friend, 20 mins worth listening too and I listened to all 20 of them.
so what's the point then? he who steals the most wins? i fear YOU, in your arrogance, are the faithfully ignorant. you have a closed mind and think you are an open minded person.
@@rodneynorfolk9737
So says you! I am sure you are an authority on exactly what makes me tic, an authority on everything there is to know about me, someone who you nothing about. If that is what you want to believe then al the power to ya because I'm not sure that I care what you think about me. OK I lied I know I don't care lol. Cheers!
@rodneynorfolk9737 That sounds like a defense mechanism. Maybe try showing that your invisible friend exists before acting all righteous about believing in obvious nonsense 😅
@@rodneynorfolk9737how is that position closed minded?
Why do unbeliever keep comparing God with Santa Claus who is based on a real person Saint Nicolas?
Since most of our knowledge comes from an authority and not from first hand experience you have no choice but to accept a lot things by faith.
There are only two options of the origins of conscious beings.
1) the universe which can not see, hear, speak, feel or reason produced creatures that can. Or
2) Eternal Conscious Absolute Being brought into His creation conscious beings. Sight, hearing, speech , feelings and reason came out of eternity.
So far with the advancements of AI no one has a clue how to make an AI conscious (like Data on Star Trek). If someone did find out how to make an AI conscious he would go down in history as one of the world's smartest men. Yet some believe blind nature produced conscious beings without trying.
mmm. I was 6. I went to a Church in Wales School. Around the classroom were posters of Jesus doing this that and the other. I also had access to Batman comics and Ray Harryhausen movies. I realised at this age these were stories. Big thing. Bible stories were boring stories.
The question you should ask yourselves is why we invented religion who, in return, invented a God outside of themselves instead of acknowledging God within us in our individual personal journeys we all are on or not on as you can plainly see !
Very straightforward. The sun was the first god. That's why god is in the heavens above. Now the first people that could create fire would have brought the sun to earth. They would be the closest people to god. The enlightened ones.
Religion is precursor to government.
God is the shepherd and we are the flock. Thing is the shepherd fleeces the sheep then eats/seals the meat. All about prophet/profit.
As for looking inward most people have idea about anything unless instructed what to think/believe/do so there would be nothing to find
control power and riches
To manipulate the minds of the weak so they can use them for their own advantage. This still happens today. It’s why 3rd world countries are…. Well, 3rd world countries.
how EXACTLY does one "see" the God within us?? What X ray or scan reveals him inside us?
Oh i realized im am agnostic atheist too 😊
I can't prove that God doesn't exist. You just have to take it on faith.
No you don’t ‘have to’ take it on faith. You choose to, or not.
People can't prove pixies don't exist either.
The burden of proof is 100% with the believer. And on that they fail every time.
so alah is not true but ur god is true?
@@justwalid2489 no god is true until someone provides evidence that does not require faith. Evidence that everyone can see to be true.

Piers Morgan’s laugh when Ricky tell him death is the end of something glorious for him. Made Piers realize he’ll never account to anything glorious in life so the afterlife is all he has to hope for.

Yup. I been praying and playing the lottery for 40 years. 65 and still nothing... oh wait, got to check my numbers. lol
one big issue is that people keep confusing and exchanging two words that are totally different: Religion and Faith. Faith is personal and intimate. Religion is organized crime, essentially...
