I remember the account "Common black girl" that got exposed as being run by a white person because they made a post saying "forever wishing I was a teen in the 50s" 💀

I went to an all girls school and omg the amount of girls in front of their lockers singing variations of the cup song every morning was frightening...like how does one stay so dedicated to the craft?
my middle school 6th grade experience was the cup song, kids pretending they knew what drugs were, and just listening in on who got cheated on by the ugly popular boys
Oh baby the phenomenon did NOT die. It evolved to those weird “textpost” accounts on Instagram that literally only post screenshots from tumblr and twitter with ads on the middle of each post
At least you can see who tweeted it and they give credit to the person who came up with it (most of the time), common white girl pretended to come up with them herself and never gave credit.
I think a large part of the Rapunzel fascination was she was that she had a toxic parental figure that wouldn’t let her live her own life, which is one of the most relatable thing for teens, whether their parents were actually toxic or not. It just made her the perfect target for self-projection because she was the most fleshed out princess at the time with a creative and cutesy personality and an ideal relationship with a guy that wasn’t just “Prince Charming.” A lot of people that liked Rapunzel most likely had Ariel as their fave princess prior. She’s an advanced version with more autonomy, a goal that was completely separate from a man, and the idea that her real loving parents were out there (though Ariel’s was more centered on leaving home to explore the human world before she met Eric)
Same with me except I was most of the time playing online games and roleplay with toxic players that managed to traumatize me just by teaching me "big words"
The true pinnacle of bizarre disney character genre edits was the merch. I cannot properly express my bewilderment when I saw a tatted up Ariel with hipster glasses on a girls tshirt at hot topic, no less when I saw a similar shirt on an actual human body.
Dory posting that video of why he's a "pillar of the Twitter community" while not wearing a shirt always makes me laugh. Like dude, you posted memes YOU DIDN'T EVEN MAKE
I knew a girl in high school who photoshopped a rapunzel edit to look like her and then Flynn to look like Markiplier, and then flipped that Flynn and made him look like Jacksepticeye, so it looked like she was being held by both. And they were all in flower crowns. She was super sweet though and genuinely wanted to be my friend, and I didnt mind. She was a little quirky, and so was I, just on the opposite spectrum. I was a fan of obscure indie horror games and internet virus dissections. We worked out as friends though.
I vividly remember seeing a meme with Rapunzel edited as main characters from Divergent, the Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments, and such. I remember being so weirded out by those Rapunzels.
Speaking of Rapunzel, it would be cool to see a video covering “the big four”, the trend where tangled, brave, how to train your dragon, and rise of the guardians leads were always drawn together!
I remember being a part in that fandom. Although I join it around the late 2010s. It is the only fandom (so far) that I cringed at. And I had a MLP, Undertale, Eddsworld, and a very brief Hollywood Undead phase. I cannot believe I romanticize killers, and remember seeing s3xy pictures of them.
@@kittykittybangbang9367 I could fill in for the transition thing if you'd like! To sum it up: being a child with almost no restrictions on TH-cam can easily lead you to stuff like "Cupcakes" and "Rainbow Factory", which are popular MLP Creepypastas. Then, you transition to more well-known stuff like Jeff the Killer, Ben Drowned, and Slenderman. And BOOM! NOW you're a 9 year old crushing on the Goth GF who wants to get rid of all serial killers.
when i first got instagram when i was like 9 i somehow got in this weird role playing community where everyone’s oc was just an edited tangled or frozen character 😭😭
I've totally stumbled into those random RP communities too 😂 I remember falling down a rabbit hole and finding entire RP groups/sites dedicated to Lion King OCs all recoloured on the same free TLK lineart base
This has the same energy as someone in a movie revealing a secret talent but refusing to tell how they developed said talent bc it's too embarrassing. But then everyone keeps asking so finally at the end of the movie, they admit how they know it and everyone's like "You should have kept that to yourself."
3:21 *ex-Starbucks employee flashbacks* I actually didn't hate the unicorn in terms of taste. I kind of thought it was like a sour gummy worm type of flavor, and I'm a simp for sour, so it worked out. The real horror was making the damn thing. To make the fraps that color, we would add in a sour powder. If anyone's familiar with powdered candies of the time like fun dip, pixie stix, or baby bottle pops, it was that sort of candy dust. Except it was incredibly fine. Genuinely a breathing hazard in the state it was in. If you made one wrong move with that stuff, you would be breathing in sour unicorn dust for hours. Funniest thing I remember from that day though was a girl buying a venti frap, striking one of those "basic cute girl" poses while sipping it and taking a pic for Instagram, then immediately tossing the frap in the trash. Good times.
Did anyone remember that one weird fandom that has to do with 4 characters such as jack frost, hiccup, merida and rapunzel or is it just me? Edited: thank you so much for the likes! ♡🥰
Oh my gosh yeah it was called Rise of the Brave Frozen Tangled Dragons. ... I was never in it but one of my friends was and my Pinterest was overwhelmed with it, hahahaha
Ok but I saw a woman in a punk Belle shirt literally this morning. Belle had piercings and tattoos, there was a crossed out “Gaston” tattoo on her arm with a “beast” tattoo below it
Somw of those are pretty good, to be fair. I personally really like the designs with punk Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn giving eachother tattos while smoking I feel like they aren't bad by themselves, it's just the people who make that their entire being
I think the reason why Rapunzel was so popular in common white girl culture is due to three things. 1: Unlike previous princess who looked more like full fledged adults in appearance (Cinderella is an example,) Rapunzel looks noticeably younger due to the art style. She looks like a young adult or even a teenager, which could be considered the usual age range of the basic white girl. 2: Her personality is very bubbly, cheerful, and dare I say it “quirky” which could be considered usual traits of the common white girl’s personality. 3: The art style, unlike disney Princess films before this art style is more cute than realistic, the style feels very modern, cute, and quirky for it’s time. So I think the basic girl culture was drawn to this in particular because people thought the art style was cute and quirky and the rest was history. And as one comment put it, Rapunzel was basically the ideal common white girl.
rapunzel had a really good soundtrack and an interesting story though?? it's not just popular to white people and tbh this comment stereotypes every single white girl ever
tangled also was the first traditional Disney Princess movie in a while (eg, white princess, from an unspecified time period, basically everything the princess and the frog wasn't lol) meaning that it would definitely grab the attention of the younger generation
The goth rapunzels in the thumbnail gave me Mrs. Mojo flashbacks- the videos called "Disney Princesses in Modern Day" or "Disney Princesses if they were goth" on that channel broke me
Just got whiplash when I saw people referring to the thumbnail as goth. Pretty sure those are just Punk or emo edits, goth would be more just all black
12:47 My personal reasoning is because of Disney’s telling of the Repunzel story is basically about a girl going on an adventure with an arguable handsome man outside of her home, which would be against her mother’s best wish, because she was told to always listen to her mother and be afraid of the outside. Same thing with Ariel but just swap the motherly figure with a fatherly figure and replace the bad intentions with a over protective nature. TLDR: Repunzel and Ariel’s story’s both have a basic idea of the beginning force to drive the plot being rebelling against Guardian figures to go after a handsome man.
i miss the unicorn frappuccino so so much. it was the best thing I've ever tasted next to amoxicillin, neither of which i'll ever be able to have again :(
Weird how princess edit pfps aren't gone yet. Most I've seen now is instead of making it goth, they make them like Princess Tiana wear modern formal clothes I think the newest generation of "Common White Girl" are those edit channels that usually have a simple name like "Blah" or something and make those "_____ being _____ for __ minutes" or "_____ out of context"
The rise of the tangled dragons Ke$hastuck (ke$ha+florence and the machine and marina and the diamonds and homestuck) SuperWhoLock - i don't need to explain. Every Harry Potter AU ever. Doesn't fit the criteria perfectly but it still counts.
I was a teen when all this went down. I would say being “basic” was always either an insult or self deprecating humor. It was never something we viewed with pride. Lmao
Same here, I used to laugh at myself for being basic. I don't think anyone actually aspired to have the label?? That era was always about being different and quirky and socially aware.
Same, I can't remember what age I was in 2010(I'm a dumb bitc-) and I called myself basic a-lot. People would call me basic as humor or an insult, No one called themselves "basic" with pride.
Watching this made me realise that if I become elderly, there will be a lot of popular culture from my youth that I'll only find out about through some documentary in 2080.
you guys can give me any random article that goes along the lines of "____ reimagined as ____" and I'd actually believe that it was an actual buzzfeed article
BuzzFeed did a lot to contribute to the cringy mid 2010s aesthetic. They used to have "funniest things on tumblr" listicles. They still do it with twitter to this day.
I remember the Repunzel edits and cringe every time, I have the ones where she's edited to look like all of major young adult dystopian future heroines seared into my brain. Sadly we're seeing a resurgence of this trend with people editing Frozen characters to look like all trendy and modern, I cringe every time I see those too.

I’m actually real salty about the cup song. I was in an alternative percussion band in highschool and the teacher running it had been using that rhythm for years. We had a really cool routine with shakers with that rythym and we’d toss them between each other. When the preppy annoyingly catchy cup song came out it just wasn’t the same anymore. PSA that rhythmic pattern predates the cup song and I’m kind of salty it’s now only associated with that😒
Does anyone else remember those YT channels who used those Rapunzel, Elsa, Anna, Jack Frost, etc. edits and created generic stories with them? I remember being obsessed with them as a kid...😅
I remember watching those channels back in the day. I think one channel I used to watch a lot was called The Pirate princess (I think I don't remember.)But those edits were really good. Unless you're talking about rise of the brave tangled dragons, because in that case I'm thinking of something completely different.
I remember really liking this one edit where Rapunzel was shipped with Mavis from Hotel Transylvania. My oblivious little bi heart was like "😳💖 sO cOoL" lmfao
I remember the emo Rapunzel edits because of just how strange it was to me. I consumed a lot of American media through the lense of someone who very much is not American so I could try and have something to talk about with my American cousins. The emo Rapunzel thing was especially weird to me because at the time I didn't even know what Tangled was (I think Tangled officially came out in Norway a year after it did in the states and Canada) and was like "wow! who the hell is this???" and I never really questioned why there were so many different edits of just this one random woman
In 2012-2015 I wanted to be a “basic white girl” so badly. I was so obsessed with the Tumblr aesthetics but I was obese back then and never fit into the clothes I liked. I hope the Tumblr styles come back again so I can live my Teen Self’s dream
Being that I graduated high school during this time, I can 100% confirm that Rapunzelle edits are STILL the bane of tumblrs existence. Also that unicorn frappe was absolutely disgusting.
I also never had it, mainly because it wasn't sold in my country (along with several other drinks that exist in the West), but I was curious to have it at least a few times. What does it taste like?
There are edible things that clearly and naturally represent colours of the rainbow, such as the irresistibly green Matcha and the really pink Kashmiri tea.
@@cez_is_typing hmm, what kind of sour flavour? Is it citrusy or like candy? (to be fair, my friend like sour stuff and mangoes, he'd probably enjoy the drink)
does anyone else remember the dolphin accounts?? in the same vein as "common white girl" accounts, there were a TON of twitter accounts which had a dolphin as their avatar and had names like "no" "tbh just stop" "omg no" etc, and they all posted very similar "relatable" content targeted towards teenage girls and young women. i swear they were really popular in like 2013.
I think the reason that Rapunzel became more or less a figurehead of these types of accounts is because she was 'quirky' (and sort of the animated version of the MPDG) without being too off-putting. Lots of these meme accounts try to appeal to the 'socially awkward, I have only 3 friends' type of person, and Rapunzel was the cute Disney version of that.
Omg, the Rapunzel edits gave me such flashbacks. I used to run a Frozen/Disney fan account when I was like 12 and I remember actually making those awful style edits of Elsa and Anna. I strongly remember doing one of those real person edits of Elsa and Jack Frost...
I actually remember making a few rapunzel edits for my friends from that specific image lmao. I think it was just a very easy to edit image (clean lines, clear background, not an elaborate costume or pose etc), and the fact that we didn’t really have icon sites like picrew around back then. if a very untechy 15 year old can edit these photos on a app on her iphone , then really anyone can.

Tbh, there were a select few things I don't mind about my early junior high days, but the memes and my old personality just makes me wanna crawl in a hole
I think the disney edits happened pretty organically. "Disney princesses as ___" used to be everywhere, given how much people love disney/pixar movies I wouldn't be surprised if people just saw a particular style of princess redraw that they liked and went from there.
this brought up some locked away memory of those tweet reposting instagram accounts that trauma dump in the caption. like the meme would be like “you know that feeling when there’s a rock in your shoe” and some reaction image and the caption would be like “my mom went to jail today :/“
tho that’s still a thing. there are some posts where the caption will piggy pag / be relatable to the post but a lot of times the caption will be so far gone. like i remember this one post from last year or so, the post it self was some “relatable” “funny” thing and the caption was the owners personal issues related
And now it's the aesthetic accounts that do that it's just weird to see a cute dress and the caption is like "my dad kicked me out of the house I'm going to my aunt love y'all XOXO"
I need a video from you on the weird hiccup, Merida, Jackfrost, and more mash up fandom that existed. God I remember the weird comics and edits from back in the day. And the Jackfrost x Elsa thing that came from that. Like what was that?? Did it really even happen or did I dream that.
@@idonteatspiders2986 I used to like Jelsa too, then I grew up and then I realized how weird it was. Now I ship Jack Frost x tooth fairy and I don't really Elsa with anybody.
looking back at this it kinda feels like it’s happening again on twitter, but instead of basic common white girl aesthetics it’s gimmick accounts that buy twitter blue and start posting interaction bait instead of sticking to their gimmick
idk but i wouldn't be surprised if any of those "ancient memes" "lyrics/whisper/genious cards out of context" accs ends being exposed for the same stuff eventually .... it's just a matter of time ig
Disney princesses were seen as part of an aesthetic back then... they were used as a lot of fashion inspiration on the app “we heart it”. similar to the way bratz dolls became part of a baddie/ kardashian aesthetic, how anime characters are part of egirl/ eboy aesthetics and more currently kind of how the newest trend is focusing on shows from the early 2000s like totally spies and winx which work well with the modern y2k.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who saw the connection between the basic Rapunzel edits of yesteryear and the baddie edits of today. You could even include the gangster edits of cartoon characters to that list - I guess it's a form of self expression, making a character you already relate to more like yourself or like your ideal self. I think a large part of the Rapunzel fascination was she was that she had a toxic parental figure that wouldn’t let her live her own life, which is one of the most relatable thing for teens, whether their parents were actually toxic or not.
It just made her the perfect target for self-projection because she was the most fleshed out princess at the time with a creative and cutesy personality and an ideal relationship with a guy that wasn’t just “Prince Charming.”
A lot of people that liked Rapunzel most likely had Ariel as their fave princess prior. She’s an advanced version with more autonomy, a goal that was completely separate from a man, and the idea that her real loving parents were out there (though Ariel’s was more centered on leaving home to explore the human world before she met Eric)

I actually didn't hate the unicorn in terms of taste.
Good times.

Lets not forget about rise of the brave tangled frozen dragons. That's probably one of the other reasons why

My personal reasoning is because of Disney’s telling of the Repunzel story is basically about a girl going on an adventure with an arguable handsome man outside of her home, which would be against her mother’s best wish, because she was told to always listen to her mother and be afraid of the outside.
Triton was 100% worse than Gothel. He was a genocidal monster who threw temper tantrums and kept his daughters as dolls.

We had a really cool routine with shakers with that rythym and we’d toss them between each other. When the preppy annoyingly catchy cup song came out it just wasn’t the same anymore. Those rapunzel edits haunt my nightmares. And that weird adventure time styled image of 3 types of girls i saw everywhere
The I'm a potato one ?
Your videos are so mad soothing?? Like I love them!! Fun old topics presented in a chill tone for me to wind down to. Thank you!
I’ve never seen someone continuously rock clown makeup so well
👁👄👁How is Izzzyzzz's makeup so good each video? Is this one of the abilities warlocks under the patronage of Garfield get 😳???
She's giving my Hungry, Bean, Kitty Girl fantasy realness
I always look forward to seeing her new gimmick makeup for the videos.
Of topic but your pfp is my childhood
Her make-up used to weird me out when I first started watching bc of how bold it is but it's really started to grow on me.
My favourite edits have to be the baddie roblox ones hahah
@@sunettas9738 "the gangster cartoon edits" made me remember the huge amounts of edits of homer simpson or simpsons characters in general wearing south american futbol team shirts.
@@VonVikoGoat I haven't seen those, but they definitely sound interesting. Speaking of which, I guess you could also add those Simpsonwave edits from 2016
i had forgotten the unicorn Frappuccino but thanks for bringing it back to the forefront of my mind
hi vriska
What did it taste like?
I never had one
thanks Vriska
i actually found a shirt at work that had white girl disney princesses on it. it said some shit like "ladybosses together" or something similar.
for context i work at a thrift store so we get all kinds of shit. never got a picture of it but it was so funny.
One time I found a clock glued into an ashtray at a thriftstore once. I laughed for over 10 minutes over it.. I dunno why.. I guess I was pretty bored lol
Same vibe as when I worked my local election and some lady came in with a mask of Illumination's Grinch with a horribly photoshopped mask on it and next to him, text that said, "I hate wearing this." So much wrong in such a small amount of fabric.
@@somethingwithbungalows classic thrift store find, lmao.
@@fanime1 LMAO
@@koda_dawgg I regret not buying it.. it was beautiful lol
Only problem was.. is that it was a little smaller than my hands put together and it costed over 6 d o l l a r s
Your makeup and outfits are always absolutely incredible and so creative!! And the fact that the content is great just makes your videos doubly enjoyable to watch :)
Agreee
I was a part of the huge Disney Instagram community back then (yes, I know, roast me below) and Rapunzel edits were EVERYWHERE... people would just color Rapunzel's hair pink, say she had lightning powers, and call it an OC.
She was like Disney's version of a Sonic oc
I went through that phase too lol. it was actually a positive community though
@@lishthefish1423 I'm glad you mentioned it being a pretty positive. All I've seen is just people ragging on the entire concept and honestly the edits, fanart, and AUs were fun and cute and even now I kinda miss that innocent kind of fandom experience? Fandom/internet turned pretty sour post-2015 imho, so I guess that is just the nostalgia talking. Oh, to be young once more. I still love Rapunzel and I will probably die as a Tangled fan. There is embarrassment but I stand by it lol.
@@roxassora2706 NOT THE SONIC OCS 😭😂
as a huge tangled fan who watched the series until it ended last year... 👀 👀 👀 i mean....... the colored hair associated w different powers isnt out there in this universe
"it's not like they were hurting anyone or breaking Twitter's term of service... right?"
well-
There's a internet rule for "everything that exists has a rabbithole?"
It’s something like that..
The army of Garfields behind her is growing and I'm s c a r e d
I DIDBT NOTICE UNTIL YOU POINTED IT OUT
i for one welcome our new overlords
LMAO
The Garfhorde
Its a minefield of Garfields
The part about tweet deck makes so much sense when you think about modern meme pages basically turning into ad pages
I remember there was a Rapunzel edit for like every big Fandom at the time. They were everywhere.
Especially HP, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson and Divergent if I remember correctly
Rapunzel edits have nothing on Constable Frozen from Tumblr and their Frozen edits tbh 🌝
No stop
STOPPP CONSTABLE FROZEN LITERALLY RUINED ICE CREAM FOR ME 😭✋
stop omg-
omfg the rapunzel edits are some of the earliest images i remember seeing on pinterest
