- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 ก.พ. 2025
- Today let's dive into the mystery of the @NormofNorth twitter account- originally intended as an innocent way to market the (widely hated) Norm of the North series of kid's movies, the twitter account caused a stir when it began posting strange, dark and even innapropriate tweets. For several years, rumors about the account have swirled- has Norm been hacked? Has a rogue intern taken control of the account to spite their employer? Or has this been an elaborate PR stunt the whole time? Let's dive into this Norm of the North drama and find out!

4 actually, remember Sea of Thieves.

I must say Duolingo has my respect because they took what their audience was saying about an innocuous owl language learning app and completely ran with the fan theory and rebranded to murder owl.
duolingo is fucking insane i love it. i also love how like 99% of the fandom simps for the purple haired chick 😭

It's actually pretty common. American animated movies used to get very minor redubs in Britain if a celebrity guest cameo(TM) was dubbed too American for the Brits to understand. Shrek did that a lot iirc.
Having worked as a social media manager for a company that let us go a certain amount of rogue on twitter especially, I can see it if not as a marketing stunt per se, then, as you said, as employees letting loose with the blessing of a higher up. When I worked in that position, both me and a colleague of mine were literally fandom dwellers and active twitter users, so instead of focusing on marketing we were legit posting stuff we knew would make people laugh and/or engage. I will say, people interacting and messing around with us was legit one of the best feelings on an otherwise pretty exhausting job. (I'm not trying to make you sympathize with corporate accs btw, I left that job for a reason. But if this was a stunt, then at least I hope the intern behind the tweets had some genuine fun :D)
My guess is the sanctity of the Norm brand isn't high on the list of priorities for a big media company. So whether or not the accout got permission to shift from pretending to like a bad kids movie to surreal adult-oriented shitposts, some manager likely went "eh sure why not"
What are the posts? Can you give a link?
@@Periwinkleaccount it was not an English company and the posts weren't in English either. Also I've left that position a year and a half ago, so digging up tweets from that era would be a pain in the ass. I still could theoretically, but do you really need'em?

the pause between
"norm is in rehab..........norm has relapsed" got to me, holy goddess I hope this isn't a weird marketing stunt (and if it is, more companies need to take NOTES)
A lot of these marketing stunts tend to be the millennials starting out in the advertising industry. That generation grew up with some unhinged crap, and it’s only gonna get worse (but in the best way possible because the goal of advertising is to make people look)!
Lionsgate is a big company, so them just "forgetting" about one of their IP's entirely isn't likely. Also if it was a rogue employee, I'm sure that Lionsgate has the resources to contact twitter and shut down the account. But it is fun to imagine a scenario in which Lionsgate completely forgot about one of their IP's because it was so shit that they didn't catch on to one of their former employees still maintaining the account.
What Ip's does LionsGate have unlike WB, Disney or even Viacom I really don't think of any franchises in particular when I think of Lionsgate.
@@PeterGriffin11 I guess there's... Alpha and Omega and the Saw movies?

lionsgate also has a pretty big social media presence (at least on tiktok) and it is received pretty well, they seem to be pretty in touch with the youths and nothing they post is cringy… so it’s actually pretty expected of them to do some shit like this
"What's the worst thing I can tweet?" followed by "Norm has type 2 diabetes" is really funny to me because it's such an anti joke.

My local A&W did a promotion with them years ago so they put a poster of norm up and they still haven’t taken it down. If you eat there you have to deal with him staring at you
Reminds me of my local theater. One of the first movies they showed when they originally opened was Battlefield Earth, so they still have a horribly sun-damaged Battlefield Earth poster on display front and center.
Doesn’t A&W have a bear mascot of their own?
Is it still up?

Man, I would love to see a deep dive into that one Alpha and Omega wolf movie series. That shit was so weird.
To clarify: I still watched it like crazy and pretended to be a wolf on the playground of my middle school
Same, I am still in disbelief that such a terrible movie has a big fan base. A fan base so big that it has 2.3k fics on FFN. To put things into perspective, Alpha and Omega is only a few hundred fics away from surpassing Godzilla, James Bond, and Jurassic Park in total published works.
How does a movie that was torn to shreds by critics and most audiences have a fanbase that could rival some of the most celebrated movies ever made?! I’m tempted to sign up for some A&O message board just to ask why people like theses movies so much
Yes!! I loved them as a kid, they were so bad I can't even look at them now ❤
*Saberspark would like to know you’re location*
no because alpha and omega was what started my hyperfixation on wolves
Apparently it's a popular movie within the furry community.
i think if it IS a marketing stunt, it’s insane and honestly scary how companies have seemingly gotten better at winning young people over in their favor, me included. Also if it is a marketing stunt it’s so weird that someone who is getting paid is essentially pretending to be an unemployed/ unpaid person to put up an another layer of synthetic relatability. Although the account is hilarious and i love the tweets themselves if you think about it too much it starts to feel a little icky imo
like at least cringe corporate accounts have their niche of being cringe and corporate, when companies get better at shitposting like this it’s worse in a way
Whoah, yes. Synthetic relatability is a great term.
Maybe stop engaging with corporate accounts lol

In the Finnish translation of the Norm of the north there was a scene when Norm was changing clothes behind a curtain (I don't remember why but this is literally the only thing I remember from the movie 'cause it aires (for some reason) very frequently on tv. The female human character of the movie asked Norm something like "When are you gonna come out?" And the Norm came out behind the curtains in a very fruity outfit and asked "Do you mean from the closet?" and looked at the outfit disgust💀

For all the reasons you listed, I get a "they gave me permission to be weird and no one proofreads my tweets" vibe. I also tweet from a corporate account and trust me when I say the really big companies often delegate this stuff WAYY down the ladder and won't check unless it makes CNN. (I'd be shocked if they even have a comprehensive record of the people running each movie's account. Where I work, it just goes to whoever takes over for the last person who ran it.)
This reads to me like someone who isn't supervised, but still works at the company so they won't say anything directly offensive without plausible deniability, in case someone high up enough to care notices. And they get to keep the "but it got engagement!" defense too.
i might instinctively hate advertising, but like. there is always a little gremlin in my brain that goes “wow the marketing department did their job, huh” on these sorts of things
thank you for documenting this. we need these moments immortalized in videos as everything on social media is so fleeting.

Izzy reading out the tweets as they progressively go further and further off the rails but always keeping the same dead-pan expression absolutely killed me. I doubt I will ever reccover.
today, the norm of the north account posted a tweet saying something like; "Im tweeting this at 9 PM right now but i love all of you guys and i can't wait to get yelled at for this shit". it was later deleted.

Idk why people think interns run these accounts, they don't. If you look at job listings for social media people almost always require a marketing degree. Any listings for intern are always "you will work with the social media manager".
i think companies like to purposely push this idea of a hapless innocent “underpaid social media intern” in the hopes that people will feel bad for the person running the page and thus not harass or ratio them
obviously izzy never misses with their looks in videos but they look especially cool in this one love the new hair

I love how often your titles are about topics I know about but not the subject, and constantly pull me in cause my response is " I'm sorry the _w h a t_ "
It makes sense that it could be a marketing scheme but then it confuses me why they'd do the "got the call from lionsgate, it's the end" both because then the engagement would end, and it would rile up anger toward lionsgate
Yeah, I kinda just assumed it was the natural evolution of Wendy's twitter brand thing of being relatable to people. It also kinda helps that no one actually cares about Norm of the North and everyone was in on the joke. Like there isn't gonna be a kid who just adores Norm of the North and finds the unhinged tweets and everyone else remembers the brand as "that weird kids movie from a few years back." It's basically the perfect account to test the water for a brand twitter account to act like this and I'm pretty sure we're gonna see more of this in the future.

I feel like the early norm of the north jokes like the “Norm 😍” one were an attempt by a brand twitter account to relate to the kids. Then either they realised this was the most interactions the account had ever had so just kept going, the account got hacked, or (like the account said) the account manager got sacked after norm was cancelled and just kept the twitter account. I’m assuming it’s the first one but ultimately I would prefer the underpaid ex-intern one
2:17 I did some calculating and apparently, 3 of the Norm's heads and 4 baby polar bear heads can fit in to one head of that romantic interest polar bear.
so the crossword at 8:12 isn’t edited. It was posted on the official norm of the north instagram in early 2019 with ‘that’ included, over a year before the twitter account saga began. Which I guess might be evidence towards the twitter posts being authorised by Lionsgate.
I always checked in on the norm twitter account every once in a while so this is super cool to see. I hope it’s not deleted but that’d honestly be pretty hilarious and add to the fever dream feeling, regardless of whether or not it’s a pr stunt
i came into this vid seeing the title and thinking, "c'mon, it's obviously a hacker or former employee." but you've genuinely changed my mind now. 🤔
I will never forget the day I randomly found the norm of the north twitter. It was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions for me
Someone else may have already mentioned this, but it's worth noting that Lionsgate also produced NBC Hannibal. The official Hannibal tumblr account posted in the style of a regular old fandom blog, and the fannibals kinda loved it lol. That "one of us" marketing strategy worked well in the past for them, so it's not surprising they might try it again.
Also, I love Aggro Crab! Everyone reading this go play Going Under it's rad
How the hell have I been thinking about this for spontaneous moments several weeks and always end up forgetting before I can really look into it, thank you Izzzyzzz for doing the hard work for me
I love your videos I love hearing you deep dive Into things that I loved when I was younger and still do now and also learning about things I have never heard about like the topic of this video
So when I was in elementary school, they would take us to the library once a week during summer school. I used to read Garfield every single time, and he was my absolute favorite. I completely forgot about all this until finding your videos earlier this year! Thanks for giving Garfield back to my life haha
This is exactly what I needed after a particularly awful day. Thanks, Izzzyzzz. ❤
I feel like Lionsgate would've taken action if it wasn't for marketing, like releasing an official statement or SOMETHING.
They did know, I think.
I remember norm of the north as one of the few instances where my dad wanted to see an animated movie and I had to convince him not to go see it because it was bad which is usually the opposite. To this day I still don't know why he thought this would be more interesting.

i’m increasingly skeptical of the angle that it was a marketing stunt considering they still haven’t released anything new. if it was marketing, then it wasn’t very effective because there’s nothing to market right now
