      I also hated Jelsa so much, just because I didn't like Elsa as a character, didn't find her appealing or fun, I still think to this day that she is a quite flat character, Anna has much more personality on Frozen 1 and I didn't get the popularity of Elsa. Also, shipping just because they shared the same powers... Boring. Jack was such a fun character, in my head he needed something more fun, or crazy than Elsa. I loved Jarida, and Hijack, and also Jackunzel, they made more sense to me idk.

      I never knew about all this big fandom until today. I just remembered seeing fanarts of Jelsa and ignoring it, cuz I wasn't really a big shipper in those days, until I saw Hiccup and Jack Frost content. I wasn't a fan of it, but I kinda liked it.
      In fact, gay shipps in general were the first thing for me to be a little close to what now we know as "representation". And thanks to my happiness of seeing queer characters existing I became a shipper.

As someone who was completely absorbed into this fandom during my middle school/high school days, it’s kinda neat to see this fandom being discusses without completely disregarding it just a “sign of the times”. As someone who was in the editing scene around that time, one of the big reason why those crossovers were so popular was thanks to the green screen packs you could find on youtube. Editors shared green screen of those characters and since editing was becoming more and more popular, greenscreens were an easy way for kids to make edits they were proud of.

    • @m00dy.c0we
      @m00dy.c0we 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I was totally astounded the first time I saw one of the edits. I think it was this really edgy one with ‘Control’ by Halsey and the creator actually made doubles of the characters because this AU contained some sort of “alter ego” for each character- where they basically had the opposite colour palette and a bunch of tattoos. It was so well made in the eyes of preteen me that I genuinely thought it was an actual dreamworks production, I bet the video is still up too.

    Before any of these movies came out I remember being a 13 year old on deviantart where my absolute OTP was a crossover. Willet, which was Wilbur Robinson from Meet The Robinsons, and Violet Parr from The Incredibles.
    The fandom never blew up so I basically gobbled up all the fanfiction and art I could get my hands on. Some similarly very impressive edits were also created.
    I remember my favourite fic from the time was about Violet being cryogenically frozen during a solo fight with a villain. Decades later she's discovered and revived and has to resume her highschool life (in class with Wilbur Robinson) whilst dealing with the angst of her parents being old retirees and her brothers being middle aged with families.

    something i will say about crossovers, as a neurodivergent person, is that crossovers appeal heavily to neurodivergent people because sometimes? the mere thought of two or more of your hyperfixations/special interests being in just the same general area just gives you an unfathomable amount of serotonin, hence why a bit more weirder things like pooh's adventures are such a thing. plus, i remember being in middle school and being a little too obsessed with (cough) hetastuck...

    I'd argue Astrid and the twins fit into conventionally attractive, at least as far as Hiccup does. Astrid was just redundant because there's already Merida and the twins had little development and not much beyond comic relief bg characters. They also don't have iconic colours or elements they could easily embody. Is like Power Rangers or magical girls, need a theme colour and they were mostly blonde with shades of brown.

    My grudge with these kinds of big crossover groups is that when you're trying to find fic for the smaller involved fandoms, half the tag will be those crossovers. And while two fandom crossovers are generally fine content, once you get three or more they're either constantly competing for screentime to explain everything, and/or the characters are so divorced from their original cast and context that they're utterly devoid of content as far as their home fandom goes. Which on its own is fine, whatever people find fun. It's just really annoying to have to sift through an already very tiny fic pool to find stories that are actually about your fandom.

I saw a good comment mentioning that it may have been more that they where all the most developed and easily relatable characters in their movies. Thier all teens with similar themes and the fact that thier all "pretty" is just how film is. It's also been pointed out that Merida is NoT attractive in the same way that the others are. She's drawn to be you g and childlike, it's part of her story. Yet she doesn't feel like second rate in the fandom. Idk I'm just loving this comment section and have seen so many people pitching in as to why exactly we all loved these characters so much

    when it comes to disney crossovers, you have only just barely scratched the surface. the most fascinating crossover fandom i've seen is the youtube fanfic video demographic where they do these video edits that range from shitty to downright impressive. they spend hundreds of hours of their lives splicing and masking footage from various movies together, essentially creating the most high effort fanfics I have ever seen, many of which do not have any dialogue, so it's actually pretty fascinating how they approach storytelling sometimes. me and a friend spent hours watching them on youtube once, it was really entertaining. boy do they get dark and sexual sometimes, though.
    there is one that's like 10 minutes long that is just a giant collaboration between many creators where characters from dozens of films are transforming into other animal characters like they're all in some kind of animal shifter shared universe. that one looks like it'd be a hell of a rabbit hole to fall into if you ever decided to dig deeper into that AU's lore.

    It would be so cool to see Izzzy make a video about the cursed invader zim fandom. It's one of the most toxic, annoying, and gross fandoms I've ever been in (like not quite undertale level, but def top 5) but it's got its fair share of odd ships and crossovers and MOUNTAINS of fics. I was in this fandom when i was like 11, and lemme tell ya it gets worse. There used to be Jelsa fan accounts on instagram where they would make stories using a 4 panel comic style. They would edit pictires from the movies to make it look like they were in the same place and story. Then they often added other characters. I remember it being a big thing of jelsa vs jack and rupunzel? I think? Anyway there were tons of different stories and all of them were nuts. I even remember reading one where elsa had a kid (it was just baby anna with edited white hair) but she had fuckin cancer with the little edited in tubes and everything. My 11 year old self was obsessed with these stories i thought they were some agnsty good shit 😂

    I also don't think it's any surprise that all of this coincided with CGI movies finally creating human characters that looked attractive to a wide audience. As a huge Disney fan during 2010 who was mourning the gradual decline of hand-drawn animation, How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled really felt like the first movies to really nail CGI human character designs and movement. Before those, the computer-animated films with the most prominent older fandoms tended to be Pixar movies that centered around animated objects or animals. There were exceptions (i.e. Shrek or The Incredibles), but they either crossed into the uncanny valley or were extremely stylized. I genuinely do think that both Disney and Dreamworks finally nailing how to animate CG humans in a similar way to traditional hand-drawn character animation was a huge contributing factor, and those movies telling stories about relatable teenagers only helped. I'm sure that if early-2010s Tumblr culture existed in the early-90s something similar would probably rise from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin all releasing so close together and revitalizing interest in both Disney and animation as a whole among teens and adults.

Kids are gonna be kids, and they need to be allowed to stretch their creative muscles, even if as adults it just looks strange. Let's face it; we all did it when we were that age, too. It's just the older Gen X'ers and the Boomers that are having trouble getting over their weird hangups.
      It's kind of refreshing, honestly. I wish I still had all that energy and optimism despite the entire world burning down around us. Keep the creativity and optimism, don't let anyone tell you your hobbies are cringey because others think they are, that's the way I've finally let myself feel after all this time. Everyone needs an outlet that lets them feel happy and safe, and if you need to write terrible self-insert fanfic crossovers with Harry Potter and The Wizard of Oz, then who is it hurting to let you do it? Truth be told, you don't ever stop doing it, you just go through a phase where you're too embarrassed to let it out of your head and onto paper where it can be read by others. I forgot who exactly made it but i remember their username had fox and coffee in it, I know they had multiple usernames throughout time on yotuube though. Those videos were essentially where the disney princesses (and queen) would go through a hunger games type series and the winner would be the remaining survivor. I was so happy Elsa survived lol. However, those videos have since been privated and all that remains is the sims 4 remake of them, however those videos have the comments turned off. I was hoping to watch with my mother so she could finally understand what I’ve failed to tell her (I was in foster care as well, so I wanted a way to express to her the hurt and pain she caused me growing up before I was sent away). But no. They had to Introduce a whole new plot that had shit to do with anything. Yes, I’m still upset. No movie has ever came close to the first part of Brave. Rapunnzel being a ravenclaw is because she'd gets written as luna lovegood, plus her creativity rather than smarts. her drive to have knowledge of the lanterns and where they come from is the driving force of her movie. she also works well in hufflepuff as she is extremely loyal and kind, hiccup.. hiccup could be all four houses, he is the one guy you could debate for hours on each. yes, he is the smartest

However I do think that Ravenclaw fits him best. I mean just look at the things he’s made, 2 flying suits, multiple fire blades, a new leg, a huge map, a new tail wing for toothless, and learned how to fight/train dragons just by watching toothless. I have a lot of respect for weird crossovers because the way people are able to fit together different plots and characters is just so creative and fun? Like, it can be cringe, but I like them on principle. I’m actually pretty involved with the current White Collar/DC fandom, which isn’t huge, but still oddly popular for how random of a crossover it is. It’s mostly based on a few works from a couple years ago that took off, and the discord that was started (I was one of the first ten members of the discord, and while I’m not a big figure in the fandom, I’ve been a passive observer for the last year or so) that helped people interested in the crossover get connected with other fans, which I think is a big part of the rise in recent works. For me, as a depressed 19 year old shut inside the house during a pandemic and unable to see my IRL friends, it was more about the fact that I stumbled into a community than it was about the crossover material itself, if that makes sense. It was really awesome to have a group of people who cared about the same niche fandom as I did, and that sparked my creativity and made me want to write, not because it was my single favorite fandom or whatever (I’d be hard-pressed to pick just one primary fandom, because that’s just not how I make and consume content), but because I knew there was this group of people who would read what I wrote and say nice things about it. This is all to say that I think a lot of it’s about other fans, not just the characters

    3.I almost got sucked into this fandom in the past
    4. I agree that Rapunzel would be earth and Hiccup air.
    5. Hiccup would most likely be in in Griffindor not Hufflepuff. That man is brave.
    6.Why is there a fifty shades of grey au!?
    7.Can't believe no one thought of the big four being poly.
    8.This is just people looking a kids movies and going what if we mess with the multiverse and mix them together, quite literally.
    9.I need a fanfiction that has every single one of these characters, I'd read it

    • @thedingdongsunshinefuture
      @thedingdongsunshinefuture ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Personally I see Hiccup as more of a Ravenclaw. They’re inquisitive right? Hiccup loves learning. He finds the dragon and literally studies it because the dragon manual had no info on night furies. He was also shown to be very invested in his map making in the second movie and finding new lands and stuff. So as much as it was a thing back then to categorize characters I’d say both Rapunzel and Hiccup would be in Ravenclaw house. XD sorry for the essay. Also I totally y’all’s points too.

    I disagree with the Merida is Fall and Hiccup is Summer. Personality wise they are the other way around. Making Merida fall because she has red hair is the only reason I can see for it and that is a poor reason.
    Also why is Rapunzel, who while smart was more about showing care and loyalty to others, in Ravenclaw while Hiccup, who did show care but who had a substantial amount of his character arc focused on showing that brains beat brawn, in Hufflepuff?

    I think the reason fandoms become a big thing is that fanfiction gives young writers an easy way to write a story with characters that are already fleshed out. It's hard to come up with your own original characters that aren't just direct copies of you with different moods or just walking tropes you see everywhere. Having characters that already have an interesting design, backstory, and personality allows the person to focus more on world building and plot development. I don't fault anyone for making fan fiction, in fact I encourage it. Any excuse to delve into the world of writing is a wonderful thing, and I hope that in the future, when fans grow up and out of their fandom, they can see that they have the power and the tools to make their own story. Sure, it'll take way longer to flesh out everything, but it's so much fun to have a full story that's yours.

      besides the worldbuilding and narrative side of things, i’d say that writing fanfiction can also be a great exercise in learning how to write different types of characters consistently! writing characters that already have an established personality & background can be a bit harder than people think, as you can’t just change them on a whim or make things up on the fly because you’re not starting from scratch. it’s kind of like the difference between having an assignment prompt vs none; on one hand it can be hard to come up with something on your own, but you’ll have the freedom to do literally anything. on the other hand, a prompt gives you a more immediate springboard for a story, but then you’re also given a certain limit to keep things in line with the specific prompt/concept.

      I know you had good intentions with this comment but the way you imply fanfiction is a "phase" for young writers really dismiss that fanfiction is a valid form of writing itself, not a learning phase, not something you are supposed to use as training wheels until you "grow out of fandom".
      I don't write fanfiction to learn how to write, I do it because it brings me joy and I want to share it with other fans. I doubt writing originals will ever bring the same feeling.
