Rise of the Guardians was one of one of those movies that “flopped“ in theaters, but was a huge success with audiences and wins the hearts of everyone I’ve ever seen who has watched it for the first time.
I remember being 8 and seeing a bunch of videos of jelsa and fire Elsa. At the time I didn't know what tumblr was, or shipping, or fanfics, or anything really. But I really liked jelsa with all my heart.
the most insane thing to me about shipping rapunzel with every single attractive contemporary animated character is that she and eugene have easily the sweetest and healthiest romantic relationship in any animated franchise?? for being such a genuinely supportive and selfless love interest eugene gets cast aside and forgotten so much 😭
Noooo but speaking as someone who shipped Rapunzel with like basically anybody I could think of while simultaneously being a huge New Dream shipper I always didn't put Eugene in my aus or even killed him off dramatically because I was like "If Eugene is around there's no way Rapunzel would fall for someone else" 😭
@@dixiewhite2698 Can you imagine anything more embarrassing than having to go to your parents and ask for money to get a tattoo lasered off because literally no one will take you seriously with a handlebar mustache on your finger?
It's funny, when this fandom was big, I was phasing out of fandom obsessions and my younger cousin was phasing into this one, so one day I found her writing a JackxElsa fic on her phone and told her "I used to do that in my old fandoms too!" So she asked me to read her fic and proofread it for her, it was really sweet ❤
Wait no bc this is wholesome in every way. You opting not to judge or call your cousin cringe or anything like that and allowing her to have that phase is absolutely amazing! Imo having that phase is just fun, and you get to enjoy yourself!
@@ratstanduser its still going its ridiculous. what was realy fun to see go down was the jack/rapunzel and jack/elsa shipping war.god tumblr wars are fun
I hate it so much😂 cause I really love the movies individually but I despise those crossover. But tbh people shipping Elsa with Jack are the worst oMg THey hAve iCe pOweRs tHey NEED tO bE a cOupLe... Uh-huh and you don't see the lesbian energy Elsa vibrates or are you just blind?
Rapunnzel being a ravenclaw is because she'd gets written as luna lovegood, plus her creativity rather than smarts. her drive to have knowledge of the lanterns and where they come from is the driving force of her movie. she also works well in hufflepuff as she is extremely loyal and kind, hiccup.. hiccup could be all four houses, he is the one guy you could debate for hours on each. yes, he is the smartest but so is Hermione and she's Gryffindor.
@@editaudioaestheticI agree honestly when it comes to hiccup I’m sure it would be something akin to Harry Potter where he kinda adds his input on which one he prefers. However I do think that Ravenclaw fits him best. I mean just look at the things he’s made, 2 flying suits, multiple fire blades, a new leg, a huge map, a new tail wing for toothless, and learned how to fight/train dragons just by watching toothless. If he doesn’t belong to raven claw the most I don’t know what to tell ya.
@@editaudioaesthetic Rapunzel also seems to enjoy books, though that might be because she only had access to THREE her whole life, and seeing and looking at others was probably exciting. But still. Yeah hiccup being hufflepuff makes no sense, and honestly having multiple characters in one house makes sense for them being friends, right??
I swear Izzy is the person who literally speaks out what I saw in the internet and wondered why it exists. She's doing our confuzzled thoughts a favor.
I vividly remember absolutely loathing Jelsa for no more than one specific reason It's just 2 ice power people so people went "ohoho ice cubes, let's ship" and I did not stand for that lol
i used to like it because of the ice powers really (and bc i was 13 and had no clue and just shipped characters all over) but now that i think about it its so dumb.........like they literally have nothing in common except the ice powers and having sisters
I was the same too! And I specifically hated the “Enemies to lovers” trope, but only if it was with two characters from other’s works, if it was between someone’s custom characters them it is okay
personally the reason I didn't like it was because Elsa was like 25 and even though Jack was 300+ years old, he still looks and acts like a 14 year old and that was enough for me to be against it, but it could have been worse.... don't worry, I didn't go and scream at Jelsa shippers, (that would be just cringe and rude.)
25:22 "Technically both had a large group of friends and sidekicks but because they weren't conventionally attractive they were seen as mostly irrelevant." If Astrid isn't conventionally attractive then my interests as a teen must have been unconventional lol.
personally i think she was excluded because they already had a blonde girl main character And a female character who was physically skilled. also maybe astrid was a bit too boyish for tumblr hipster edits...?
@@SkiddlyBink Yeah that sounds like a reasonable explanation. Personally, I have historically not been able to tell that someone is considered a tomboy until someone else points it out lol. When I was younger I think all that word meant to me was "hot" lmao
21:21 how could you not mention the popular 2010s animated TV show trifecta Gravity Falls, Steven Universe and Over the Garden Wall, which come together to form the most glorious multifandom name I've ever heard: Steven Falls Over
i was so obsessed with this. fans were so convinced that they were really gonna make a movie with the big four and when elsa came into once upon a time, everyone thought they’d bring in jack to be with her. a very strange fandom but the edits are genuinely really great
What did not help with that was the director/writer of Rise of the Guardians then endorsed Jelsa and said he wanted it to happen (then again, he’s like obsessed with shipping Jack Frost with almost female character he can find)
@@exammole4545 I have so much unfortunate info about the director’s shipping exploits. He once tried to say that a REAL LIFE woman was so in love with Jack Frost, she threatened to K word herself if he didn’t return her feelings.
that and all those: "merida can be seen entering the castle with elsa and anna at *insert time stamp from that one scene in frozen*", on top of really blurry gif of a little blob of red moving around in a crowd of.... mostly just hair lmao not sure i had tumblr yet but i remember those posts leaking over into facebook. i never understood what the obsession was, especially since i was relatively new to the internet to start with. for like a year i just assumed there was actually a movie coming out that combined the 2 series and everyone was looking for easter eggs
I had never even heard of this fandom EVEN ONCE and I was on tumblr constantly during this time. I saw your comment and it all came back to me like a smack in the face
For some reason I hated this fandom as a young teen because I viewed them as the 'cool hipster fandom' that were encroaching on the 'real' nerdy fangirls who liked wtnv, homestuck and like marvel lol. As if we weren't all spending all day being cringe on the Internet instead of like going outside lol.
Honestly, as someone who grew up on YT from 2008-2012, this fandom basically just felt like an evolution of ‘animash’ crossover AMVs to me. I never rly understood the appeal of crossover edits, which largely focused on editing Disney/popular animated movies’ characters together for a new narrative, but the existence of this fandom did not surprise me with that background lmao. Only surprising thing was how popular they were all collectively together on tumblr but tbh that just tended to be how 2012s tumblr rolled.
Fuck, I miss those days. So many old AMV/Animashes have been removed over the years. Literally a bucket load of nostalgia that I would love to have back 😭
The big 4 is one of the least offensive fandoms I've ever seen, personally. Fans were always creative and nice, and honestly they picked the characters that I was drawn to as a neurodivergent person, so I might have joined the fandom had I discovered it at its start :)
I think that’s probably because it mostly consists (and has always consisted) of kids, younger teens, and neurodivergent people like us. It’s pretty damn cool how positive ROTBTD is and more or less always has been.
The fact that dark Rapunzel now canonically exists in that universe and pretty much looks exactly how the fandom headcanoned her with the pitch black eyes and black hair will never not be funny to me.
Since every season has an associated element, it was typically: Jack - Winter - Water (cuz, yknow) Merida - Summer - Fire (obvious) Hiccup - Autumn - Wind (flying) Rapunzel - Spring - Earth (magic flower)
I’m surprised she didn’t touch upon “Golden Blonde and Jet Black”...for those of you who don’t know, it was an impressively edited and really cute love story between Rapunzel and Mavis. I stumbled across it when I was younger and it was the first time I’d ever watched a lesbian pairing lmao.
@@kittykittybangbang9367 before starbucks started promoting official limited time instabait drinks, "secret menu" starbucks orders were very popular in the early/mid 2010s. I definitely remember secret menu unicorn and mermaid frappes that just sounded like a batistas nightmare, as you had to rattle off a long and specific order since you couldnt order them by name as these secret menu items didn't actually exist (yet).
I've seen Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons every now and then on Pinterest, DeviantArt, and tumblr. Each time I saw it, my Big Sister™ instincts would activate and I'd actively encourage the creativity. It's just so cute and heartwarming to see kids doing what they love, no matter how crappy the editing is. There's just something about it that makes me see the artist in them, and I love it.
I know right? Honestly, compared to other fandoms, this super crossover just looks fun and run entirely on headcannon. I have known the Elsa and Jack Frost pairing for a while. But I didn't know people has been shipping this movie character I don't even remember with all kinds of teen girl protagonists.
It’s kinda funny knowing that “Rise of the Brave Tangled Frozen Dragons” essentially became the go-to fandom place to create/view animated crossovers. As someone who was completely absorbed into this fandom during my middle school/high school days, it’s kinda neat to see this fandom being discusses without completely disregarding it just a “sign of the times”. I’m pretty sure this fandom is what helped me get into writing and other creative endeavors, so I have to give it thanks for that.
I felt so much pain watching this. This transported me straight back to my rise of the brave tangled dragons phase. I remember being so heartbroken and upset when people shoved aside Jackunzel for Jelsa. I was so atrociously anti-Jelsa. I was such a salty child. Was anyone else on the Instagram role play side of this fandom?
Yoooo, i disliked Jelsa as well (mainly because of how popular it was that almost everything was centered around them and how there were toxic shippers) but I never really trashed the ship or the shippers (respectfully hate maybe?) I shipped Jarida (there is so little content for this ship, its so sad) and Mericcup (with Jackunzel)
I also hated Jelsa so much, just because I didn't like Elsa as a character, didn't find her appealing or fun, I still think to this day that she is a quite flat character, Anna has much more personality on Frozen 1 and I didn't get the popularity of Elsa. Also, shipping just because they shared the same powers... Boring. Jack was such a fun character, in my head he needed something more fun, or crazy than Elsa. I loved Jarida, and Hijack, and also Jackunzel, they made more sense to me idk.
I never knew about all this big fandom until today. I just remembered seeing fanarts of Jelsa and ignoring it, cuz I wasn't really a big shipper in those days, until I saw Hiccup and Jack Frost content. I wasn't a fan of it, but I kinda liked it. In fact, gay shipps in general were the first thing for me to be a little close to what now we know as "representation". And thanks to my happiness of seeing queer characters existing I became a shipper.
Man, this fandom really embodies everything about early 2010's fandom culture. I was never a part of it but it always seemed so... interesting? I guess?? This one and the "Disney" crossover one.
I agree that Hiccup should be wind and Rapunzel earth. That goes well with their seasons as well. I disagree with the Merida is Fall and Hiccup is Summer. Personality wise they are the other way around. Making Merida fall because she has red hair is the only reason I can see for it and that is a poor reason. Also why is Rapunzel, who while smart was more about showing care and loyalty to others, in Ravenclaw while Hiccup, who did show care but who had a substantial amount of his character arc focused on showing that brains beat brawn, in Hufflepuff? I am all for these tropes but…. Do they even trope?
I think Rapunzel fits wind more seeing how free-spirited and high energy she is. Also the fact that her breaking free from her chains is a theme that I personally see working more with wind than earth.
Alrighty, I have a lot to say: 1.Wasn't expecting you to call Pitch a tumblr sexyman with no hesitation. 2.The one part about the whole dark au, I gotta point out that black haired Merida looks like Bellatrix Lestrange 3.I almost got sucked into this fandom in the past 4. I agree that Rapunzel would be earth and Hiccup air. 5. Hiccup would most likely be in in Griffindor not Hufflepuff. That man is brave. 6.Why is there a fifty shades of grey au!? 7.Can't believe no one thought of the big four being poly. 8.This is just people looking a kids movies and going what if we mess with the multiverse and mix them together, quite literally. 9.I need a fanfiction that has every single one of these characters, I'd read it 10. most of them have some major parent issues, all have varying degrees of trauma 11. Non attractive? Ha, I had a crush on Ruffnut I apologise for the rant (I can't spell)
Personally I see Hiccup as more of a Ravenclaw. They’re inquisitive right? Hiccup loves learning. He finds the dragon and literally studies it because the dragon manual had no info on night furies. He was also shown to be very invested in his map making in the second movie and finding new lands and stuff. So as much as it was a thing back then to categorize characters I’d say both Rapunzel and Hiccup would be in Ravenclaw house. XD sorry for the essay. Also I totally y’all’s points too.
Back in the day, I had a classmate and she was so into this fandom that she had a lot of notebooks with thousands of fanfiction about this, and she used to make me read them and give her my feedback about her stories, I obviously never made fun of her I was very respectful with her unusual writing 😂. Hope she's doing better now.
I cackled at "Hope she is doing better now". 😂😂 As an avid fanfic reader for well over a decade I definitely understand how especially younger readers and writers can be a bit unhinged, not in a bad way but still very much weird.
Omg this just reminded me that I used to inflict the same torture on my friends, just with my own original stories. Idk if that makes it better or worse lol.
Oh my lords, the drawing of Hiccup at 13:52 IS MINE. Of ALL places to see a blast of the past is seeing your own art YEARS later online (I am SO curious, where did that one drawing end up without my old account name? I still have the psd of it....). A NOTE on that, I wasn't too keen on Hiccup being Earth at the time as I wanted him to be the wind but for shenanigans and headcanons and such between people I had to go with earth. I NEVER leave comments anywhere, this was enough to pull that curtain. Very fun video, first I watch on your channel and beautiful fashion style!
While I really liked this fandom, my best friend LOVED it. She had a Tumblr ask blog, she actively talked to others in the fandom, and wrote a lot of fics. I actually drew fanart for her via her suggestions. She even wrote out a whole AU mainly focused on Hijack that I drew comic pages for. I still have appreciation for it (it's basically one big polycule, so course I do) and I do know many awesome people who were in the fandom at one point.
We love polycules here. And also this fandom just seems so interesting and also has characters that I love, and they do all seem to go together very well!
I have a lot of respect for weird crossovers because the way people are able to fit together different plots and characters is just so creative and fun? Like, it can be cringe, but I like them on principle. I’m actually pretty involved with the current White Collar/DC fandom, which isn’t huge, but still oddly popular for how random of a crossover it is. It’s mostly based on a few works from a couple years ago that took off, and the discord that was started (I was one of the first ten members of the discord, and while I’m not a big figure in the fandom, I’ve been a passive observer for the last year or so) that helped people interested in the crossover get connected with other fans, which I think is a big part of the rise in recent works. For me, as a depressed 19 year old shut inside the house during a pandemic and unable to see my IRL friends, it was more about the fact that I stumbled into a community than it was about the crossover material itself, if that makes sense. It was really awesome to have a group of people who cared about the same niche fandom as I did, and that sparked my creativity and made me want to write, not because it was my single favorite fandom or whatever (I’d be hard-pressed to pick just one primary fandom, because that’s just not how I make and consume content), but because I knew there was this group of people who would read what I wrote and say nice things about it. This is all to say that I think a lot of it’s about other fans, not just the characters
Are those Dc/White Collar crossover about Tim or Bruce being Neal as an undercover identity? cause if so i may have read it too, through the timkon tag, my otp
I seen some of these niche fandoms evolve into something separate from the source material, such as changing the copyrighted characters into completely different/original characters and story. It's weird, but oddly interesting to see and even nice.
I remember being in the HetaOni fandom (Hetalia x Ao Oni) and the level of production and talent that was put in some of the artwork still amazes me to this day. Those were fun times.
Oh wow I had buried that jack frost onceler gif DEEP in the back of my mind Also, this reminded me of the Bad End Friends, it was another super popular tumblr crossover fandom with the eViL 🤪😈 versions of characters like dipper finn and wirt. I think it'd be really cool to see an Izzzyzzz video on that :]
I liked coming across "mystery kids" stuff, which was just a collaboration or Coraline, Over the Garden Wall, Gravity Falls, and I think in more recent years Hilda?
@@emmy_platinum Mystery kids was always one I LOVED as I as into the spookier type of shows, but it was always hard for me to find proper content for it, but I am now remembering an entire comic someone was making about it and I am now about to hunt that down at 5:30 in the morning
something i will say about crossovers, as a neurodivergent person, is that crossovers appeal heavily to neurodivergent people because sometimes? the mere thought of two or more of your hyperfixations/special interests being in just the same general area just gives you an unfathomable amount of serotonin, hence why a bit more weirder things like pooh's adventures are such a thing. plus, i remember being in middle school and being a little too obsessed with (cough) hetastuck...
When I was younger, I'd imagine a certain crossover between kids novels (diary of a wimpy kid, big Nate, captain underpants jermino Stilton get the point already) and one particular thing I can say is for the "who is the best protagonist of all these books" it was pretty obvious Greg heffley was the lowest tier
11:26 I think there's another group and it's the 4 dads (Santa, Stoic, King Fergus and King Frederick) hanging together. Honestly seeing chad dads hang out together doesn't sound bad at all
I can see Stoic, Fergus and Santa hanging out, but Frederick looks so out of place there, probably because they look like badass dads he is more an adult Disney Prince
As someone who was in this fandom a few years back I have to admit that RotBTD was always something that I truly adored as a kid - magic powers, funny stories, angsty drama, I mean, come on I'm glad this fandom didn't die cause it's something that's really worth remembering imo
True,, seeing this video was nostalgic for me looking back at my childhood just all out consuming disney crossover stuff. Those were the good ol days :))
When I was younger I loved the “Secret Trio”, which was a crossover between Danny Phantom, Jake Long, and Randy Cunningham. All of them had secret alter egos and dark spiky hair, so I guess that was why they were put together 😂
@@davidhong1934 the show wasn’t popular. I’d say it’s underrated, but that’s just my personal opinion. The jokes were bad and the characters were meh, but for some reason it was my favorite out of the three anyways 😂. Unfortunately it was cancelled on a cliffhanger and the rest was history.
@@davidhong1934 To be fair all three were fairly short running shows Jake Long only lasting 2 seasons and Danny Phantom lasting 3 Jake Long in particular did seemingly badly since they changed the art style to be drastically simplified in the second season and from what I heard Danny Phantom was supposed to have 4 seasons but was wrapped up in 3 cause the writing was on the wall for cancelation.
I really miss the early 2010's. I spent such a large portion of that era online so I witnessed it all, and as cringe-worthy as it was... it was already pretty enjoyable
I didn't ever want to go into this fandom, it looked so intense. I saw a book about it on wattpad (a Jelsa book with TONS of engagement, both good and bad) and the pictures on pinterest years back and just watched from the sidelines, in awe. Thank you for this video, you just brought me back some memories!
I was too busy on Percy Jackson Pinterest to dive into this fandom but I was constantly bombarded with the edits scrolling through the geek or humor categories back in 2013-2015
You just got into the intense side of it in its time of great turmoil. If you were introduced to its part where there were just 4 teenage crossover friends mingling and displaying their unique traits then who knows, maybe you'd be dragged in like the rest
I think the reason fandoms become a big thing is that fanfiction gives young writers an easy way to write a story with characters that are already fleshed out. It's hard to come up with your own original characters that aren't just direct copies of you with different moods or just walking tropes you see everywhere. Having characters that already have an interesting design, backstory, and personality allows the person to focus more on world building and plot development. I don't fault anyone for making fan fiction, in fact I encourage it. Any excuse to delve into the world of writing is a wonderful thing, and I hope that in the future, when fans grow up and out of their fandom, they can see that they have the power and the tools to make their own story. Sure, it'll take way longer to flesh out everything, but it's so much fun to have a full story that's yours.
besides the worldbuilding and narrative side of things, i’d say that writing fanfiction can also be a great exercise in learning how to write different types of characters consistently! writing characters that already have an established personality & background can be a bit harder than people think, as you can’t just change them on a whim or make things up on the fly because you’re not starting from scratch. it’s kind of like the difference between having an assignment prompt vs none; on one hand it can be hard to come up with something on your own, but you’ll have the freedom to do literally anything. on the other hand, a prompt gives you a more immediate springboard for a story, but then you’re also given a certain limit to keep things in line with the specific prompt/concept.
I know you had good intentions with this comment but the way you imply fanfiction is a "phase" for young writers really dismiss that fanfiction is a valid form of writing itself, not a learning phase, not something you are supposed to use as training wheels until you "grow out of fandom". I don't write fanfiction to learn how to write, I do it because it brings me joy and I want to share it with other fans. I doubt writing originals will ever bring the same feeling.
I joined the fandom cause I was just like "oh there's a crossover movie?" and then I found out it was just a thing on the internet and I got way too involved, I read fanfiction, I made art (the art consisted of bases and stick figures with hair but art nonetheless) and it was something I entirely forgot about
One of my favorite things about the fandom was when they purposefully made more and more horrible names for it by adding literally whatever movie had just come out. The scroll down on the wiki just cracked me up!!
@@darienb1127 Yup! When a new animated movie came out, people would just add it to the acronym and add the characters to the fanworks. It got ridiculous real fast, but it was all in good fun.
Oh god, this makes me instantly remember how I made an “anti-Jesla hate” FaceBook page at 12 years old because the ship got so popular it was popular to hate it lmaoo. What a time the internet was.
There are cool crack buddy, spouse and partner pairings for many recent adaptations of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ works. A really fun example is a crack buddy pairing between the Dynamite Comics versions of both Tarzan and John Carter.
As someone who was in the editing scene around that time, one of the big reason why those crossovers were so popular was thanks to the green screen packs you could find on youtube. Editors shared green screen of those characters and since editing was becoming more and more popular, greenscreens were an easy way for kids to make edits they were proud of.
I was totally astounded the first time I saw one of the edits. I think it was this really edgy one with ‘Control’ by Halsey and the creator actually made doubles of the characters because this AU contained some sort of “alter ego” for each character- where they basically had the opposite colour palette and a bunch of tattoos. It was so well made in the eyes of preteen me that I genuinely thought it was an actual dreamworks production, I bet the video is still up too.
I was friends with the Big Four kids, but I wasn't satisfied with any of the characters, so while my friends were roleplaying Elsa and Jack Frost and Merida, I was roleplaying ... Ruber from Quest for Camelot, right alongside them. Good times. Ruber became something of a weird uncle to the gang.
Yo Quest for Camelot was and still is a banger movie and Im surprised the twins weren't somehow shoved into this mess due to being, yk, a two headed dragon. I appreciate the Ruber love he was an amazing villain
Read your comment and was like "hold on who the fuck is Ruber", then had the childhood nostalgia equivalent of a Jimmy Neutron brain blast. Quest for Camelot was dope, thanks for reminding me of its existence, LOL Also not gonna lie I'd /love/ to hear more about Weird Uncle Ruber's dynamics with the big four, if you have any extra stories you'd be willing to share on here?
okay my two cents on this fandom. i was a HUGE part of it on wattpad, and my acc is still up. i had an ask the RotBTD, i had opinions on whether elsa should be included, and ofc, i partook in shipping drama. i was a HUGE jerida and hiccunzel fan, but i was also a fan of crazy niche stuff like elsa/flynn rider. i was big enough to have thousands of readers at my height, until i dipped forever and made a new, much more modest acc. this was such a big part of my childhood!
I think when discussing why these specific characters got popular it's important to remember that most of the people participating in this fandom were kids and teens, they wanted stories about teenagers who they could relate to and who had more complex narratives and interactions and stories, and disney and dreamworks movies are great at providing a spark for that, but incapable of carrying it very far due to the time constraints of a feature film, they can only really focus on one character's story, everyone else is supporting cast. I think attributing the shared attractiveness of the big 4 to the vanity of the fans is unrealistic, it was the studios making a conscious choice to make their main and therefore most developed and interesting characters conventionally attractive, in the hopes of selling more tickets and merchandise. The main thing the big four plus the frozen girls have in common is that they're protagonists, Elsa and Anna aren't quite as developed because they shared the protagonist position in their movie, but they had an established and developed and complicated relationship with each other and that was fuel enough for the teenage imagination to run with. Flynn Rider is also conventionally attractive but he's too grown up, his problems are more relatable to young adults than young teens so he got forgotten even though he was equally a protagonist of Tangled, and Merida is actually not particularly conventionally attractive because her entire story was focused around being a child, so her design was intended to look awkward and childish and immature rather than beautiful, a key example of this being her eyelashes and how subdued they are compared to the dark, feminine lashes of the other girls. There are other features I could point out but this is already an essay, the point is what made her compelling was not her looks but rather her character and story and how relatable it was to the teenagers making up the fandom.
Plus, the attractiveness theory requires thinking that the Onceler guy is better looking than the girl from How To Train Your Dragon, so it clearly misses something.
This is such a weirdly specific question but was it like implied that Rapunzel was the daughter of Sandman and Mavis was the daughter of pitch Black or was that something else
Rise of the Guardians never getting a sequel has always pissed me off. It was a huge movie, besides how it preformed at the box office. My younger brother just watched it for the first time recently and asked me about any sequels or spin offs. When I told him there aren’t any, he literally said “well that sucks.” I wish universal would have made something with the characters from the movie again
God, can’t wait to see a video on the fandom that always perplexed me while I was on the cartoon/video game side of Tumblr in the 2010s. Truly was a time to be alive

@@abbakarenina Pretty sure he was around 23 in the tangled movie. Rapunzel's tangled adventure takes place over 3 years or so and he has a birthday episode where he was 26(I think). So i'd say between the movie and series hes around the ages 23-26.
My guess is that Flynn just didn't have that much going for him in terms of being memorable. Him being in his 20s instead of a teenager isn't why he wasn't popular, cause tumblr girls thirsted over superwholock who had all of its protagonists being adults. I think not only did his facial hair make him seem older, he just... kinda lacked charisma and charm. He had some in the movie but... he didn't end up being much more than a generic handsome thief with a heart of gold. Unlike Hiccup who had a memorable voice and quotable lines, he overflowed with charisma, or Jack Frost who had a developed and compelling backstory that appealed to edgy teens. Flynn Rider just... didn't have that. Rapunzel had a compelling backstory. His character was just... overally pretty generic. Generic orphan who generically resorted to stealing to survive. Generic snappy and sarcastic personality, and generic "he was always a good guy deep down".
plus there was the fact that he was constantly trying too hard as part of his swashbuckling persona and would deliberately go out of his way to show off and flirt. Kinda hard to thirst for a character like this, unlike Jack Frost or Hiccup who were sort of "hot without trying"
I appreciate all the heart and soul that went into this entire fandom. It's the same blissful sincerity as those terrible AO3/Wattpad stories written by teens you can find
The first time I was introduced to this fandom was from a video where someone shipped Mavis and Rapunzel together, and they adopted Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph. 😂 For some reason, they made Pitch Black Mavis' father and the Sandman as Rapunzel's. It was an odd one for sure. I think you can still find the video. I think it was called "Golden Blond and Jet Black"
I felt personally offended every time you said Astrid wasn't conventionally attractive... but at least it hurt less than hearing “HTTYD is basically a horse movie“ and agreeing with it lol 10/10 video
yeah, i would argue for Eugene as well but they did not have their own stories or at least no one really focused on them since... well, they were not exactly the protagonists. They made kind of justice on Astrid and the others with the series giving information here and there which was great... i was obsessed with it for a quite a while and it honestly hurts hearing the truth no one really dared to mention until now about HTTYD being basically a horse movies
@@deerinheadlights7179 man I remember so much Eugene love back in that day, it's really baffling how he wasn't included in most RotBTD stuff I've seen. I guess it would conflict too much with Jack/Rapunzel?
@@deerinheadlights7179 I remember seeing *some* inclusion for them back then but yeah they were mostly ignored and it was strange. I guess that even though Eugene and Astrid are attractive, they just aren’t “angsty” or “quirky” enough to make the cut (even tho Eugene is a literal orphan but I guess it’s about attitude)
@@ivyej industry and some good writing can make almost anything "angsty" enough to be honest... in fact some AO3 writers are doing great with it. But i think it is better this way, if all the cast were the same depressed 12 years old's crying over their hard lives i do not know what i would do... What i mean is that i could have been worse. Astrid could not really make much of protagonist with the already established story of "teaming dragons" knowing how she saw things at first And Eugene... i have no idea, his story was good enough for protagonist and would do the trick but in this case Rapuznel's view would never be close enough with te view which would do for undestemating her character and story while Flin's is even more positive (understand family friendly) portrait without too many details for his past.
My Hiccstrid-loyal heart cannot bear seeing these edits of Hiccup or Astrid being paired with someone else... even now I still covered my eyes when they popped up in the video XD
Damn I could NEVER imagine Rapunzel with anyone but Flynn Rider, like come on they're probably one of the best Disney ships ever with actual plot rather than prince charming and damsel in distress
shipping rapunzel with someone else doesn’t diminish the impact of her story tho? plus, due to the nature of her character and the other related three, fan content rarely took away her agency.
@@duckydae op's point is that Eugene blows every other ship out of the water and it's actually canon, and I gotta say I have to agree. Flynn Rider is top tier husbando material, can't get any better than him 😔👌
Hiccup and Rapunzel's houses should defintely be swapped. Hiccup was an inventor and researcher in many ways and loved learning more about things (Especially dragons). And it's that knowledge that he gained that would often aid him. Fitting for Ravenclaw since they are known to be smart and intelligent. He could be really nice and loyal as well, but many other characters in his films had those traits. Rapunzel was known for being extremely nice and at the start of her movie, she questioned and even panicked about leaving her tower since she trusted and was loyal to Mother Gothel. Those are traits that perfectly describe a Hufflepuff. Now when it comes to Tangled, I've only seen the first movie, I never saw the series, so I could be wrong about this. But that's how it should be in my opinion.
I love the idea of both of them being in Ravenclaw though because they both seek new knowledge. However I could totally see Rapunzel being Hufflepuff because of her kindness and ability to make friendships with nearly everyone.
@@martin.allaman Did she…create anything? Like, she found creative uses for her hair, sure, but other than that her greatest strengths in her movie are her strength of character and her endearing outlook.
The whole "ew cringy" honestly reminds me of 7th grade when you couldn't vocally like anything that wasn't considered cool. I would have thought we'd gotten over policing people's intrest at this point.
its so wild how far rapunzel's reach is her fan interpretation is wildly different in the rapunzel's tangled adventure fandom its kinda interesting to think how the two fandoms would mesh lol
...I was actually reminded of rotbtd recently because I found out Varian is mentioned in the wiki. Oh, and the worst thing I found out looking into that is why Cassandra X Rapunzel is listed as "Rapssandra" Why? Because "Cassunzel" is taken by Aunt Cass (bh6) X Rapunzel. helpppp
Oh my god nothing like realizing you’re part of fandom history! lmao I founded the original the-big-four group on dA with a friend of mine before passing it on to other people after leaving the fandom. It was a wacky crossover but we all had a lot of fun. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
17:20 That was honestly one of the biggest problems when trying to find anything Hiccup/Jack related online. If you looked up Hijack, you'd get some action movie and a bunch of crime stuff. Frostcup has always been the superior name, but only like 1/4 of the Fandom used it! 😔
omg I remember being so engrossed in this fandom. I made “the big four” bracelets and gave them to my friends and I shipped Jack and Repunzel so hard that when Elsa came into the picture I literally left the fandom. It’s so wild looking back at my younger preteen self and reflecting on the emotions I felt during that time. It was a great community when I was in it, and I honestly don’t regret being so involved
The only crossover AU I ever payed attention to was the bad end friends. I just really liked the idea of ‘but what if these characters didn’t have a happy ending?’
Man this brings back memories! Never was in the fandom itself but it was a constant presence - I saw it everywhere. Hell, one of my longtime friends is still in the fandom today. I always like that you touch on both sides of fandoms in your vidoes. Yes, it can be intense at times with unnecessary drama, but at the end of the day, the core of a fandom is, or at least should be, just people having fun and that's really what ROTBTG is. It's really impressive that this fandom is still alive and strong today, great vid as usual! :)
Omg yes I could not have said it better! All cringe and drama aside, people were and still are happy creating stories and art for this fandom which is the most important thing - having fun
This was my first fandom and I actually kinda miss it. 😂 It was my first time being exposed to ship wars and what led to my immense hate of Frozen. I could never tell my family it was because Jelsa fans kept shitting on my ship, so I told them it was because I was tired of seeing it everywhere. Glad to know it's still going on somewhere out there.
@@babynyancat2002 Speaking of which I've heard that in the books or prequel comics Pitch actually flirts with Tooth. Imagine if that happened in the movie.
Back in 2013, my friends and I literally cosplayed as The Big Four. We went to a convention as these characters, taking tons of photos as the different ships. People knew who we were too! Lots of con goers knew about the Big Four at the time. It still holds a special place in my heart, not going to lie!
All I remember about Brave is that we watched it on Christmas Day and found out my hamster was dead about halfway through when we went to give him his Christmas presents. 4/10 had a lot of aesthetic forests
I love how the majority of comments here are long, detailed accounts of people’s experience with this fandom and how it shaped them as a person in some sort of way. It’s incredibly nice to see a video that was able to touch something really special in a lot of people, and also see that reflected in the comments section with little to no scorn from “outsiders”
Agreed! Also I don't see how this fandom would ever deserve scorn, except of course from pretentious "grown ups". It was extremely fun and creative. Also, a gang of characters with potentially interesting dynamics is always great. I have extreme respect for anyone who put their heart and soul into the art and stories, it's great to see people thrive creatively or get a first few tastes of being creative.
I always really appreciate how you approach these topics, I had my toes in like ALL of the fandoms you've covered, I'm STILL involved in some of them, and hearing someone talk about it in a way that isn't derogatory and mean-spirited is so nice, You're always very refreshing to watch especially because I love learning about all these weird internet phenomenon, but I hate the way most people talk about them
yes like even if it’s considered cringe now at least they were happy and clearly not hurting anybody there’s not much to gain from bashing it other than maybe a laugh and a few clicks which you can still get by not bashing it
yeah, i love how she actually compliments the hard work and love put into the fanarts and fanfictions and stuff. like sure its a little strange but you can see the care put into it and thats kinda sweet
I shipped Jelsa SO HARD, I made an Ever After High oc of their daughter. Also, it always bothered me how Hiccup, Anna, and Rapunzel, were just being shipped with eachother as if Astrid, Kristoff, and Eugene weren't a thing at all. Like, to me, It didn't make sense.
Oh my god you made an ever after high oc of there daughter? I would love to hear about her I've never though of putting there kids in ever after high that's so cool!
As someone who was a part of this fandom... listen... I didn't think I'd ever hear about this again and it could have stayed that way Edit: the Jelsa bit reawakened a slumbering rage I didn't know was still there. My headcanon was that Elsa was Rapunzel and Jack's daugther/descendant and I never understood why she wasn't integrated into the fandom that way.
My guess is that they wanted all the characters to be roughly the same age so they could have more teen interactions? Having two of the big 4 as parents would change the dynamic dramatically. Although baby Elsa fan art would've been very adorable.
Well, it actually sort of was? Sometimes stories would cast Elsa and Anna as Jack and Rapunzel's daughters, but usually they would just make Elsa and Anna Rapunzel's cousins.
i think its because rapunzel made a cameo appearance in the frozen movie and it looked like they were around the same age ( though Rapunzel had her short hair so maybe slightly a bit older )
@@vynti7080 that was part of it, but I'd agree with that if the whole fandom hadn't essentially thrown out all the canon besides the character designs and personalities
Same, i disliked (respectfully hated) Jelsa mostly because of the toxic shippers and that almost everything was about them… I shipped Jarida (lmao it was such a small unpopular ship that I had to contribute content for it)
"The ship name was Hicunzel" Holy Christ, that is the funniest thing I've heard in the last 24 hours, and I went to a comedy show last night. And the show was actually really good, so the fact that hearing this name alone made me almost pass out laughing really means people should have realized how bad that name was.
They also fit perfetcly as an RPG group, Jack would be a mage, Rapunzel's the healer, Merida would like a rogue or a warrior and Hiccup would be the mechanical expert
as someone who very much was there, i’ve never heard them referred to as “the super six”, it was always the big six. i remember a lot of mavis or tadashi content (usually jackxmavis or tadaelsa) but the big six was the main stuff i saw. god i think this video caused a significant amount of psychic damage, especially when you showed frozen ii crossover holyyyy i do wonder how different the instagram and tumblr experiences were, it’s possible that the “which was bigger” argument was cos the big four was bigger on tumblr and the big six on instagram, but i don’t know haha
I grew up with it being called the Super Six, but that was Jack, Hic, Merida, Punz, Elsa and Anna. Not Mavis and Tadashi, though I did see them occasionally in the Super Six crossover stuff.
@@zoguy6988 oh yeah no it was the big four + anna and elsa but i saw mavis and tadashi involved sometimes, often enough that it was worth pointing out :)
@@handsoaphandsoap nope, just the big six! the big hero six lot were occasionally involved (tadashi more than anyone else) but not often - i assume cos it’s modern/futuristic rather than generic Past (rotg is set in the modern day but jack was a medieval kid so idk)
I'm gonna be honest: I don't even consider this fandom to be cringe. Never been a part of it but you know what, I respect the idea. While I wouldn't ship these 4 characters together I can imagine many ways in which their disparate personalities would make for an entertaining story if you put them together in a room and since their respective movies have elements in common that idea is reasonable enough. Against other ways I've seen fandom culture butcher and water down media, an AU about four teen main characters from different movies interacting sounds a lot more constructive to me. Hell, maybe it's for the better in Merida's case, since her movie left so much to be desired.
i agree to a certain extent. i think that the idea is great like you said but the large majority of the fandom are tweens with no idea of how to create convincing / intriguing dialogue or narrative points. not to mention the uncanny edits. it's like giving star wars to disney. a beloved franchise tainted by people unequipped to uphold that level of quality. but the thing is that i guess we can't really be surprised that it's all cringe. it appealed to a bunch of cringy developing little 12 year olds who are learning. and from what i've seen in some of the comments on this video, it helped people develop a creative drive and some good moral lessons. tldr; it's all cringe but it's positive cringe. an inevitable cringe that all tweens suffer.
idk I LOVED it as a kid and a few years ago went back to read a wattpad book about the big 6 and it really wasn't terrible. sure the storyline was kinda childish but it was just what middle schoolers perceived high school to be. It was cute to see people try to stretch movie details into well fleshed out stories😂
memory unlocked: i genuinely thought you were going to talk about those like cosplay story videos someone made of the big four, id nearly forgotten about it but now that i remember, i used to LOVE them so much, id follow each update and video it was so god awful but lovely in its own nostalgic kind of way
i was deep in the hiccstrid/httyd trenches and had SEROUS (albeit one-sided) beef with the big four fandom for completely casting astrid aside. SHE WAS SO INTERESTING AND COOL AND PRETTY. mericup couldn't even compare.
I like both tbh :3 obviously you can’t change canon but I think Merida and Hiccup’s relationship could’ve been quite interesting and a fun dynamic. But I do get the not wanting to ship anyone with your OTP, I’m like that about some characters, but some I’m fine with shipping with other people :3
I remember being yelled at for asking a question about Jelsa because I should have known it was a bad ship based on the age gap. I knew Elsa was 21 but Jack's age??? Depending on the source material, he was between 14-18. Jack was voiced by Chris Pine, he sounded like an adult. Fandoms are brutal and scary, my dude
Jack is actually immortal so he could be 1000+ years of age. In frozen 2, elsa could turn immortal since she is now an spirit so she could turn into 1000+ soon.
@@lisahoughton3262 in that case I'd argue that if it'd be creepy to ship him with anyone, probably Merida (the youngest), first movie Hiccup and maybe Rapunzel (just bc she's so innocent and sheltered) would be the ones that it would be creepy with. So basically Elsa would be the safest bet with the immortality rules!
15:10 people also called him Black Ice, that was Jack's like, 'darkiplier' mode. Though Black Ice existed within and out of the corrupted-by-Pitch AU, he was just kinda like the evil twin or persona. Sometimes the same person, sometimes a different one altogether.
Before any of these movies came out I remember being a 13 year old on deviantart where my absolute OTP was a crossover. Willet, which was Wilbur Robinson from Meet The Robinsons, and Violet Parr from The Incredibles. The fandom never blew up so I basically gobbled up all the fanfiction and art I could get my hands on. Some similarly very impressive edits were also created. I remember my favourite fic from the time was about Violet being cryogenically frozen during a solo fight with a villain. Decades later she's discovered and revived and has to resume her highschool life (in class with Wilbur Robinson) whilst dealing with the angst of her parents being old retirees and her brothers being middle aged with families.
this was like... my introduction to fandom. like. oh boy. the nostalgia hit hard. and also like, in retrospect, the reason this crossover was appealing to me as a lonely middle schooler was probably because all of the main characters' narratives in their respective movies were ones I related to, but they were also so... lonely. None of them really had any friends their age (except Hiccup but at the time only the first movie was out and his eventual friends were more reminiscent of the middle school bullies I was trying not to think about). they were all going through similar coming-of-age journeys all on their own, so imagining them meeting and comparing notes was probably my own way of coping with loneliness by imagining the possibility that I could have a friend group of people who understood me. In short: escapism is one powerful drug. (also in a sense this wacky fandom in of itself did give me that, as it was a way into an online community with other teens who shared my interests)
This is actually such a good breakdown of why this fandom happened, I’ve never seen anyone make this connection but now you’ve said it, it just makes so much sense
@🍿Kittycorntv145🎬 oh what! then you're the same age I was when I started exploring the web :O I'm sure you've grown up with youtube and social media and all sorts of stuff but still, I hope you're having a good time as a kid on the internet and discover fun corners of it like I did back when this fandom happened
Man I remember the mess of the shipping when Frozen came out. I naively thought everyone would fit Elsa and Anna as Jack and Rapunzel's kids, but it became clear that was not a unanimous thing. I remember some of the more hardcore Jelsa shippers trying to push Rapunzel out of the four and replace her w Elsa. Was a wild time for sure.

Rapunnzel being a ravenclaw is because she'd gets written as luna lovegood, plus her creativity rather than smarts. her drive to have knowledge of the lanterns and where they come from is the driving force of her movie. she also works well in hufflepuff as she is extremely loyal and kind, hiccup.. hiccup could be all four houses, he is the one guy you could debate for hours on each. yes, he is the smartest

Yoooo, i disliked Jelsa as well (mainly because of how popular it was that almost everything was centered around them and how there were toxic shippers) but I never really trashed the ship or the shippers (respectfully hate maybe?)
I shipped Jarida (there is so little content for this ship, its so sad) and Mericcup (with Jackunzel)
I shipped hiccup and Jack and hicerda instead
LMAO SAME BUT MY MINE SHIP WAS HICCELSA BECAUSE I HAD A CRUSH ON HICCUP AND I WAS OBSESSED WITH ELSA LMAO-
I also hated Jelsa so much, just because I didn't like Elsa as a character, didn't find her appealing or fun, I still think to this day that she is a quite flat character, Anna has much more personality on Frozen 1 and I didn't get the popularity of Elsa.
Now i really want to look up those crossovers again
Same. Wasn’t a part of it but it was sooo interesting to observe from the sidelines.
I miss the early 2010s
Ikr
I KNOW RIGHT
You are right and trust me there were many debates on this back in 2014
I think Rapunzel fits wind more seeing how free-spirited and high energy she is. Also the fact that her breaking free from her chains is a theme that I personally see working more with wind than earth.
Reminds me of whenever I see Narnia edits putting the Pevensies into HP houses.
Alrighty, I have a lot to say:
1.Wasn't expecting you to call Pitch a tumblr sexyman with no hesitation.
2.The one part about the whole dark au, I gotta point out that black haired Merida looks like Bellatrix Lestrange
3.I almost got sucked into this fandom in the past
9.I need a fanfiction that has every single one of these characters, I'd read it
10. most of them have some major parent issues, all have varying degrees of trauma
11. Non attractive? Ha, I had a crush on Ruffnut
I apologise for the rant (I can't spell)
OMG, I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT HOW THEY COULD BE WRITTEN AS POLY
"Loyalty" is typically seen as the "main" Hufflepuff trait, and I'd argue that's a significantly more dominant personality trait for Hiccup.

What fandom isn’t weird?
Name a fandom that isn’t cringe tbf
I seen some of these niche fandoms evolve into something separate from the source material, such as changing the copyrighted characters into completely different/original characters and story. It's weird, but oddly interesting to see and even nice.
I remember being in the HetaOni fandom (Hetalia x Ao Oni) and the level of production and talent that was put in some of the artwork still amazes me to this day. Those were fun times.

something i will say about crossovers, as a neurodivergent person, is that crossovers appeal heavily to neurodivergent people because sometimes? the mere thought of two or more of your hyperfixations/special interests being in just the same general area just gives you an unfathomable amount of serotonin, hence why a bit more weirder things like pooh's adventures are such a thing. plus, i remember being in middle school and being a little too obsessed with (cough) hetastuck...

There's a Cinderella 3 review that talks about fanfiction! You should watch it!
besides the worldbuilding and narrative side of things, i’d say that writing fanfiction can also be a great exercise in learning how to write different types of characters consistently! writing characters that already have an established personality & background can be a bit harder than people think, as you can’t just change them on a whim or make things up on the fly because you’re not starting from scratch. it’s kind of like the difference between having an assignment prompt vs none; on one hand it can be hard to come up with something on your own, but you’ll have the freedom to do literally anything. on the other hand, a prompt gives you a more immediate springboard for a story, but then you’re also given a certain limit to keep things in line with the specific prompt/concept.
yuh
Writer here! I also started with fanfiction and I agree. If I wouldn't have started with that, I would not be where I am now.

Plus, the attractiveness theory requires thinking that the Onceler guy is better looking than the girl from How To Train Your Dragon, so it clearly misses something.

right ??? when it started to gain traction i was already a bit too old to get into it, but i wasnt old enough to not know about it or avoid it lol. a bunch of people i followed on tumblr were really into it and i remember very distinctly the very weird experience of like. seeing my neighbors' backyard being taken over by the big 4 while at my own it was just business as usual lmao
God can you imagine a video on the Phineas and Ferb Tumblr/Deviantart fandom that existed at the time. Things were wild in there.
Weird how Flynn wasn't included. He seemed very much like Tumblr girl bait.
@@abbakarenina ig, teen girls are more into the effeminate male chars
Kinda hard to thirst for a character like this, unlike Jack Frost or Hiccup who were sort of "hot without trying"
he was included in all the rapunzel aesthetic girl edits as the guy character (all the hipster/fangirl/emo/whatever girl but with a boy)
For some reason, they made Pitch Black Mavis' father and the Sandman as Rapunzel's. It was an odd one for sure. I think you can still find the video. I think it was called "Golden Blond and Jet Black"
WAIT OMG I REMEMBER THIS
i remember staying up late watching youtube on my iphone 3 when i wasn’t supposed to and i found that one 😭😭
That video was how I learned what gay people were
Omg I remember that video damn you just unlocked a memory for me.
Oh my god, I watched it!
I WATCHED THAT TOO
I felt personally offended every time you said Astrid wasn't conventionally attractive... but at least it hurt less than hearing “HTTYD is basically a horse movie“ and agreeing with it lol
10/10 video
yeah, i would argue for Eugene as well but they did not have their own stories or at least no one really focused on them since... well, they were not exactly the protagonists.
Astrid could not really make much of protagonist with the already established story of "teaming dragons" knowing how she saw things at first
And Eugene... i have no idea, his story was good enough for protagonist and would do the trick but in this case Rapuznel's view would never be close enough with te view which would do for undestemating her character and story while Flin's is even more positive (understand family friendly) portrait without too many details for his past.
Flynn Rider is top tier husbando material, can't get any better than him 😔👌
Same like she and eugene are too cute together that i don't see the appeal of her and jack 😭
If Tangled the Series fandom taught me anything is how Rapunzel is shippable, particurlarly with Cassandra.
Did you make the meme at 15:41
I actually do prefer Rapunzel in Ravenclaw as she also has the creative side of the house, not just the typical bookworm side
I love the idea of both of them being in Ravenclaw though because they both seek new knowledge. However I could totally see Rapunzel being Hufflepuff because of her kindness and ability to make friendships with nearly everyone.

As someone who was a part of this fandom... listen... I didn't think I'd ever hear about this again and it could have stayed that way
Edit: the Jelsa bit reawakened a slumbering rage I didn't know was still there.

Ah, the anti Jelsa crowd and their creative ways to jump thru hoops to somehow end up with both sides of the couple being pedos
Don’t miss that
Jack is actually immortal so he could be 1000+ years of age. In frozen 2, elsa could turn immortal since she is now an spirit so she could turn into 1000+ soon.
