    I am currently dealing with a dry socket. My tooth was a difficult extraction so this explains the pain. The clot really never fully developed so by day 3 it was over the top radiating to the ear and eye. Thanks for explaining what you did. Either I was so uncomfortable from the broken tooth to begin with that I didn’t retain the info. I appreciate the thoroughness.

    One good tip, for anyone having to do an extraction to reduce the chances of having a dry socket. Have a deep clean done beforehand on the same day, by scaling and cleaning your mouth of tartar and plaque, it gets rid of a lot of bacteria which would otherwise affect the bloodclot, so this in essence will prep your mouth for the extraction. It will cost more, but will help to heal your extraction quicker and leave your mouth feeling fresh.

    Doctors need to stop relying on conversation to instruct the patient of what to do. Important details can be easily missed or forgotten especially when the patient is already managing pain and stress when they come in. The on paper directions my oral surgeon gave me don't even allude to the need to keep a blood clot in place. Just reading through it otherwise uninformed the gauze is just for stopping the bleeding and "dry socket" is caused by smoking. The instruction sheet never even tells you what dry socket is.

    I did something like this- I was working a month long gig (no days off) and got my bottom right wisdom removed the day prior to my flight to my gig. I smoked, I ate crunchy things, then met my match on about day 4. Thank God my Dentist gave me tons of amoxicillin, Ibuprofen, and Tylenol, or I wouldn’t have been able to make it. I would clean the site myself by removing any food with one of those poke tools, and tweezers/ cotton swabs, and then rinse the site with salt water. I then would brush my teeth & I had medicated toothpaste at the time for my gums, so I figured it would help. Afterwards, I would rinse again and then squeeze oragel inside and packing wet gauze in the hole- following up with taking one ibuprofen 500 & one Tylenol 500 & amoxicillin. Slowly it got better, and then I realized the gums were healing/ closing. I feel no pain as of now (2 months later) but it definitely took about 16/17 days post extraction to finally have a 90% better sense of relief.

      I'm on day 4 right now and it's been the worst. I almost vomited from the pain. I had my general dentist pull the tooth and it ended up being a traumatic extraction. The tooth broke into 4 pieces and it was like 4 extractions in 1. The first day was sore but tolerable, days two and three it felt a lot better, then BAM day 4 I had gum pain, jaw pain and it was unbearable. It's Friday evening so I can't see my dentist until Monday. Ibuprofen and Tylenol have not helped. The only thing that worked was today I went and got Red Cross Toothache with eugenol and packed the socket with it - I was worried it was going to sting bad and it didn't - you just have to be very careful not to touch other parts of your mouth it will sting - but it's decreased the pain probably by 80% and has made it at least tolerable until it's over and can see my dentist.

    Buy a plastic or rubber tipped syringe from the drug store. Too many dentists send us home without something to properly flush out the socket. If you're having bottom teeth removed, it's a very high chance of happening no matter how careful you are. I used it to flush with salt water and the pain substantially improved by doing that. Applying some orajel or any other brand around the gums was also another life saver. The ibprofen and Tylenol did an okay job, but it really only takes the edge off when you're dealing with dry socket. Just my two cents after dealing with absolute agony for 5 days, lol.

I don’t smoke, didn’t brush my teeth really for a day after the extraction, did the cold compress and salt water, didn’t drink from straw and just eat porridge until now. Dealing with this right now. What I'm really worried about is residual food debris. The pain is manageable, and I've only been eating 'solid' food once or twice a day. Otherwise it's yogurt or low sugar smoothies. I take ibuprofen, then eat, and by the time I'm done eating and giving my teeth a quick brush, that's when I grab my monoject to irrigate the food out of the socket. That way the medicine is fully kicking in by then.
    My worry is that it seems like I can never get all the particles out, there's always a little bit that doesn't want to lift out and clings to the interior. It waves around and looks like if I just irrigated harder it would flush out, but I don't want to be too aggressive on such a sensitive area. The roots still have clots in the bottoms of them and I'd hate to dislodge them. There's some exposed bone between the roots and I think that's what's causing the discomfort.
    For clarification, it's a lower first molar and the clot never formed properly and was almost completely gone by the third day. Everytime I would eat anything there was a little less there when I went to irrigate.
    For irrigation and mouth rinsing, I bought a 12 pack of 12 oz bottled water and use 1 - 1 1/2 tsp of fine table salt to create a clean saline rinse solution.
    Like I said, the pain is manageable. I'm just concerned about the residual food particles that don't want to come out. I may try using a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide to water.
    I found this video very helpful. It made me feel better to know that it will heal on it's own.

She said it should kill the pain for couple days, but later at night I can feel the pain coming back. Two days later I came back, and again she gave me the same thing. Also didn't last for more than couple hours. The surgeon insisted that nothing else she can do to help. She said I could be clenching on my sleep (I did not even sleep when the pain was coming back). What should I do? How come the surgeon did not give any treatment like in this video?

    I had a tooth removal on 29. They did a full extraction pulpectomy with bonegraft. Now I did use a straw throughout sipping liquids for the first three days and then salt water rinse between day two and day four, but I didn’t spit hard. But I did notice that when they did the procedure they did kind of forcefully push down on the jaw Back-and-forth trying to get to 29 out. Day four I had to go back I was experiencing some catastrophic pain. It was no bleeding or anything like that but when I did go in, they did find out that I did have a dry socket so he filled it with some type of gel and come to find out it was alveogyl
    And the pain has went down, but I was advised to remain on the restrictions of only eating liquid food for the next 24 hours. Having a dry socket sucks!!
    Is there anything that a patient can do if they end up receiving a second dry socket during the process and how to properly care for that tooth at home if it say on a weekend and no dentist offices are open ?

      You should experience a bit of relief at the time that they place the medication. It's not uncommon for a dry socket to last for several days. I've had a couple times where it went on for 7-10 days (not the norm). I would keep in touch with your dentist and they'll advise what is best. Often I prescribe pain medication for patients so that they can tolerate the discomfort. All the best!

      Dry sockets are self-resolving with enough time. What I tell patients is if you can manage your pain with Advil / Tylenol and you're functioning okay, continue with that approach as long as the pain is decreasing day by day. If the pain is too much for those basic meds, or if it's staying steady or increasing, it's best to visit the dentist so they can flush the sites and evaluate whether or not they could benefit from a dressing of some kind. Hope that helps! I wish you well!

    Im on day 7 post surgery and just went to see my dentist for a follow up. The lady told me i have to start irrigating the bottom two wisdom tooth sockets. ( i had all 4 removed but she says that gravity will keep stuff out of my top sockets) When she did, lots of stuff came out of my left socket, but then quite a bit of blood came out of my right. My mouth is a tad sore coming home and i was just wondering could she have removed my blood clot? Is bleeding normal 7 days post op?

    • @OnlineExodontia
      @OnlineExodontia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is pretty standard and it's a good idea to follow her recommendation. If food/debris gets entrapped in the lower sockets, you can sometimes get a delayed infection that comes on 4-6 weeks after you have the teeth removed. The uppers typically don't need to be irrigated. The sites can be a bit inflamed and keep in mind they are healing so yes a bit of bleeding would be normal and is often seen when rinsing them out. The clot should be established very quickly (first 24-48 hours) so at this point in time you should not be too concerned about that. All the best...it eventually gets better!

      @@timothymills8047 I wouldn't be concerned. You'd have to really work at it (like physically dig into the socket to open it again). By that time, things are starting to heal and the new tissue will certainly be weaker at the beginning until it matures, but you wouldn't lose the clot.

    I had one of my lower wisdom teeth extracted yesterday. When I got home I
    rinsed my mouth out with water and also spat blood out not knowing that
    I was not supposed to. I then read on the internet all about dry
    sockets and that to avoid these you should not do certain things like
    rinsing and spitting. I am therefore worried I have a dry socket. I have
    looked into my mouth using a light and a mirror but am unsure whether
    the socket is dry or not. I have no pain at all and my breath does not
    smell. What would you advise?

    • @OnlineExodontia
      @OnlineExodontia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not much you can do at this point Tom. Rinsing and spitting should be avoided as you have discovered, however, just because you did that doesn't mean that you will have dry socket. Time will tell and I would be will to bet that you'll be fine regardless unless you were very vigorous / aggressive with your rinsing. All the best!

    So had my impacted wisdom teeth taken out, 3 days in I started experiencing horrible pain. Went back to my dentist he gave me pain meds etc.... Thing is I have not only excruciating pain but my jaw has locked up( cant open past maybe half an inch, meaning I cant really eat so now I cant take the pills cause i throw up everything I attempt to drink or eat.. throat is super sore and my mouth is constantly fillled with spit I can't swallow... Haven't eaten for two days will be returning to the dentist tomorrow. God I hope this ends soon .

    I had an extraction 4wks ago and developed a dry socket through infection it was treated as in the video and I was pres antibiotics. The socket is healing very slowly there is swelling and redness in the jaw below. I have been told the bone is infected will this resolve itself eventually? I am still in pain. Any advice would be really appreciated

    Thank you for your clear and informative video 🙂
    So I'm on day 2, and I have unknowingly done all the things I shouldn't have : used a straw (to drink soup), smoked (only about 5 a day) and ended up spitting the clot out whilst trying to sleep thinking it was a bit of food stuf in there.
    Ive learnt I have dry socket with the symptoms of that foul saliva taste, smelly breath and swollen glands under my jaw and round my ear.
    I've been running with salt water and have put a fresh gaunt in then ringed my mouth with mouth wash to prevent that taste seeping through - seems to do the trick... But would that infect / irritate the gum?

    • @OnlineExodontia
      @OnlineExodontia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That shouldn't be a problem for the gum Ms Maglorie, but certainly if you start noticing more symptoms, follow-up with your dentist. All the best!

    Great video, very useful. First tooth extraction of top pre molar and yesterday The clot came away now I have a bad smell coming from the tooth but no pain other than general feelings of the tooth extraction. After being able to photograph it I’m noticing a white pus with smell in the socket so I can only imagine is infection :( any tips for self help while waiting for an appointment with my dentist??? Any home remedies or over-the-counter products for helping clean out the infection??

    Im not sure the theory behind it. Ive have about 3 different tooth extractions. First 2 dentist said swap out guaze for the first day or so. After day 2 or 3 yoi can stop with the gauze. The last dentist was like you can remove the gauze 30 min after extraction. 100% if id followed my first 2. Used gauze for up to 3 days. Id be good. Tried the 30 minute thing and now this has been the worst extraction. I go tomorrow to see if its dry socket. Probably is. On both my sockets. Ive smoked and drank from a mini straw every time and been fine. Ive always done it with gauze tho. So i think its more important to keep it covered for the first 4 days. With a few hours uncovered each day. The smoking drys the socket up. Keep it covered. Until the clot is formed. Or youll be fucked.

    • @OnlineExodontia
      @OnlineExodontia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dry socket is very painful. Advil for example won't make it improve at all. If you're not experiencing pain, it's likely that you just have impacted food in the socket and it may need to be flushed out. If you're concerned however, it's best to get in touch with your dentist. All the best to you in your recovery!

    I was wanting to quit smoking cigars for a year. Week b4 I got molar chipped out I quit. 2 weeks after I wanted to smoke so bad month later still slowly don't crave it anymore. Straw I miss bc of my beard. I don't blow my nose anymore not spit I try not to sneeze. Do I miss my rotten broken tooh that gave me throbing migraines not able to eat jalapeños or rinse with listerean kinda miss it bc of the rince smoking I enjoyed it but needed to kick it. I forced myself to stop b4 the military. Anyways if I hadn't broke my ribs I would of gotten free dental & probably better in the military. Oh well. It is said 6 months fully heal. I got ways to go still. I do not enjoy not being able to blow my nose. Oddly I pick it more like finding gold nuggets
