- In this video, I show you how to install and set up Recalbox 7.0 or higher on the Raspberry Pi 4!
In my opinion, this is one of the easiest retro emulation frontends to use with the Raspberry Pi and the Recalbox team has made it even easier with the inclusion of a shared partition! This allows you to easily add games directly to the micro SD card from Windows or Mac PC.

Older video but I just received my Rpi 5 today and decided to try out Recalbox. Got everything imaged with 9.2, turned the pi on and had the exact same issue with my controller start buttons not working. Tried 3 different brand/type controllers, gave up and hooked up a keyboard for the enter key (the A,B,X and Y buttons worked on all the controllers, weirdly enough) and went through configuring the controllers. Then I found this video, lol. Woulda saved me about 15 minutes digging around for other controllers. Apparently it's an issue with off brand/generic controllers, all three of the ones I tried were off brand but once configured they all worked perfectly. Thanks for the video!

would recalbox run saturn using yabause, like retropie? now that i have a raspberry pi 4, i'm dying to get at least a couple saturn games working...
@@benjamingilmore6442 we're already working on it. Results on Pi4 were not cool like XU4, so we just delayed this compatibility to work on it.
Impossible to find the SHARED folder on the most recent version of Recalbox installed through RPI Imager... Any help please?
@@juliencollet2859 Recalbox must be started once fiste. Then plug SD on your PC, right click on Start Button > disk management > attribute a letter to the share SD partition. And that's it !

@@Mike09017 i have a retro pi 3 which i bought and it works amazingly, ive figured out the pc emulation side of things to so im able to play anything not on my system directly through my pc using retro arch however i would like to design my own retropi 4 choosing the games that i would like to play rather than have hundreds of thousands which ill never touch.

I'd love a comprehensive look at the similarities and differences between RetroPie, Batocera, and Recalbox. Is it all how the system looks, or are there more differences?
AFAIK the 3 uses the same backend technology (libretro) so they uses the same emulator cores, the difference could be just front end related or prob inside configurations for making sure you have the best setup for each emulator, another example of this systems is Lakka
@@Gilded30 botocera includes extra emulators such as PCSX2 and Dolphin, do Retropie and Recall Box?
@@fantom0369 RetroPie does support both, need to be installed manually. So far my issue with RetroPie is mixing controllers, have to setup controllers on Archemulator and Dolphin and, so if switched from 3 xbox controllers to 2 PS3 and an xbox, it needs to be configured for the change
In my experience Recalbox ran games much smoother than Retropie. Harder MAME games especially.
@@richarddukard8989 I must admit, I cant comment on MAME. However, the back end is retroarch for both. I.e. you should be able to match the emulator that recallbox uses, on retropie. You DON'T have the option of easily switching emulators in recalbox, which may be an issue for some ROMS, but the front end (emulation station) is set up much smoother in recalbox.

Thanks for continuously up loading these vids. I was able to get raspberry OS and retropie working on my old laptop thanks to your tutorials.
Tried this out and setting everything up is much easier. Only thing I wish Recalbox had is a video/slideshow screensaver so I'm taking a look at Batocera (which sadly lacks the shared partition afaik).
Nice to see Recalbox featured, by far and away the easiest RPi retro gaming front end for RPi noobs IMHO.
ETA Prime, what is your preferred OS to have on your Raspberry Pi4 for the higher end games (PSP, Dreamcast, N64, etc...)?

Recalbox is legit the best OS for the Raspberry Pi. It gets the most updates and is way better than retropie, batocera, or lakka imo. I've tried them all and recalbox is the best and the most up to date as far as emulators go.
@@BigBrosFilms how do the 32bit+ games run on it? Really just want PS1, N64 and maybe Dreamcast and GameCube.
Hey @ETA you mentioned you were able to overclock your pi manually with recallbox installed in your last video. I was hoping you would cover how to do that in this video but since you didn't could you make a video explaining how to do that or point me to instructions on how to do that?
I am 99.999% certain he's done a video about "how to overclock the pi4" already. If not, there are hundreds already.
There is an option in the recalbox settings to overclock.
Just keep looking and your find it in the menus
Thanks ! I have the recalbox rgb dual on the way to play these games on a crt. In the past ice used Lakka so I wasn't familiar with how to do this. Turns out it seems even easier

I am about to reinstall my old dual core tomorrow.I may try this i just hope she's up to the task.I want to use her either for a retro arcade machine or a retro windows xp machine.

I would probably switch to Recalbox if they supported using Redream. I'd also love to see a version of Phoenix (3DO emulator) ported over to the Pi.

I've never used Recalbox, but have several devices set up with RetroPie. What is the difference? It pretty much looks the same.
Basically ease of use, they both use Emulation station and RetroArch
I've been a Recalbox user for a while and 2 big things for me are how easy it is to assign and switch controllers and that I can change the theme region with a toggle.
I use a lot of different controllers based on the system I'm playing and Recalbox is easier for me. I'm also nit picky and want to see the Genesis, TurboGrafx 16, etc instead of Megadrive and PC engine.
Retropie is nice, but for me does way more than I need it to do and I find in clunky/combersome. I just want to easily and quickly play my games.
I looked up their documentation of emulators compatibility it's not compatible with nds. I don't know if they have a expirmental section to access ds cores like retropie.
In my opinion RecalBox also has better performance especially in N64 games on the Pi 4
Whereas RetroPie still struggles, RecalBox runs it just fine with little to no issues

Hi, I installed Recalbox and realised that the game resolution is lower than that of Retropie on TwisterOS. The game I tried was NES 1943.
What screen is that?
I'm having trouble connecting any of my controllers. It for some reason finds everything except controllers. It even wanted to pair to my TV..

I'd like to see RetroPie, Batocera, and Recalbox for PC. Yes I know you can install Emulation Station and Retroarch and go through that tedious setup. But an all in one executable would be great. Only one real RetroPie, Batocera, and Recalbox setup for PC I know of and that is the guys over Retrobat. Pretty cool. But I'd like to see RetroPie, Batocera, and Recalbox officially for Windows.
One front end that ETA has show cased for Windows and actually done tutorials for is LaunchBox which is a pretty clean front end. Granted you have to yes get the emulators pointed correctly, but it’s pretty friendly and looks great. Like you pointed out you already know this but the three you mentioned were designed as standalones or possible dual boot options.

Great video - as always - two things don't work for me: a "Share" drive is not generated and my newly assembled arcade stick is not recognized? it works under Windows and also under Retropie. Recalbox only shows the lights. Can you help me with a solution?

how well does recall box work with MAME? I like retropie well enough but I built a bartop arcade machine and it isn't very intuitive for first timers hopping on it, wanting to play some games

On the new Batocera 5.27.2 with the Controller not being Configured, L3 + R3 opened the Menu, maybe try that for Recalbox
I have no audio whatsoever with my recalbox on my pc no matter what I do in sound settings. I tried to Google it and im presented with a bunch of coding I don't understand or know how to access and TH-cam doesn't have a SINGLE video. Help!!!!

@ETA PRIME In Batocera you can also format the share partition to exFat via the menu in ES, then reboot and you can do the same, that you described in the video (plugging out the SD-card, plug it into a Windows PC and copy roms easily over to the share partition). This was possible since Batocera 5.26 already. What is your opinion, if you compare Batocera 5.27.2 (currently latest version with some fixes for 5.27) to Recalbox 7.0?

i tried the recall and had the share folder,trying to put a ps1 and neo geo on there messed everthing up now i cant get the share folder back i have reformatted and erased and restarted 2x and i still cant get share folder to pop up what am i doing wrong

Is it possible to use an onscreen keyboard when using an emulator that needs a keyboard? I would like to be able to use it without a physical keyboard. Gamepad only (It can emulate a mouse. Keyboard for keystrokes only))

issues with recalbox 7.0 on PC
-Button mapping issue due to not having all the analogue directions available for input (right and down from both sticks missing) causing n64 controllers C buttons not being able to be set up and function
-HDMI audio out doesnt work (I tried every output option), only default internal speaker in my computer has sound out

so if I went through and did everything correct it should load up, which right now it isnt. Ive been sitting here for the last 10 mins and its not even loading up. what did I do wrong?

I have Retropie running for me on my Rpi4. I buoght a Rpi4 for my nephew and i thought that maybe recalbox would be better for him, after flashing the SD card and starting the Rpi i got no sound, if i try to use wifi it freezes and the resolution looks weird. So after esearching and finding nothing i am goin to use Retropie for this Rpi4🙄
Also, what happened to the website? Everything is empty in the docummentation and there is no detaila about what core is being used, audio settings and so on.
