      @@WagnersTechTalk Would you know of any common reason\s why when connecting wirelessly my laptop will not locate the Pi by IP or \\RETROPIE ?

    • @WagnersTechTalk

      Go into RetroPie setup under WiFi and make sure you see the IP Address. It may be in the format of 192.168.x.x . You can then use \\[your ip] to find the Pi. This assumes that you've already connected the Pi 4 to your network. That should get you to your Pi.

      Reformat the USB stick using PiImager (here's how: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_as_FAT32_Pi_Imager ). Create a retropie folder off the root (all lowercase). Insert it into the Pi again, give it about 30 seconds and remove it. If that doesn't work, try a different USB stick, maybe there is something wrong with yours.

    Hi. New to all of this. So far, this is quite informative. One question: Are the game files actually stored on the microsd, or on the pi directly?

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, sure no problem. The games and bios files are stored on the microSD. If you don't want to use a microSD, you can also use an SSD connected to the USB 3.0 (blue) port. Although, microSD is the least expensive way -typically.

    I literally just got my Pi4 in the mail like 30 mins ago. Your video was uploaded just in time. lol.
    I've built an older model before, but this was a nice refresher.
    I never knew about the shortcut to preconfigure wifi. That's gonna save a bit of time later.
    Thank you, sir!

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol, glad this was good timing! The WiFi setup shortcut was one of the main reasons I wanted to make this video. It's not very well known and greatly simplifies the setup process. Regarding your question, no I've not seen that personally. If I were to guess, try a different hdmi cable. I have received a bad cable in the past, spent a bit of time troubleshooting. Then narrowed it down to the cable. May be something you can try. If not, post your question here: www.reddit.com/r/RetroPie , lots of folks there that may have a better suggestion or ran into the same.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind comments! Are you asking about converting an original MK1 arcade machine to a RetroPie cabinet, building a new cabinet or purchasing one? There are a ton of different ways you can go. If it's an original arcade machine, I would leave it stock (jmho) unless it isn't working. With a bit of work, you can build your own and put the Pi into (fun project, my son an I built a few). Or you can purchase a case, connect an arcade stick to it, etc. You'll find some guides here that may be helpful: wagnerstechtalk.com/guides/#Raspberry_Pi_4_Retro_Gaming . They don't cover building an arcade cabinet though. There are just so many possibilities, I'm not sure what you're looking for.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A few things it could be: 1) make sure your microHDMI cable is plugged into the port nearest the power input. Make sure the Pi is powered off, power it back on and you should see it appear. 2) If not, you either have a loose connection or there is something wrong with the cable itself (I've had that happen).

      For the WiFi setup, see this section in the written guide: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming/#Wi-Fi_Setup . More specifically, changing your WiFi country. If it's not set correctly, it could cause issues with WiFi. For USB Transfer, try making sure the USB stick is formatted as FAT32 or exFat. If it's NTFS, not sure that it will work. You can use Pi Imager also to format the USB stick here: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_as_FAT32_Pi_Imager . Let me know if any of this helps please!

      It could be a number of things. Try updating the game list, then restart emulation station. If they still don't show up, verify that the games themselves are still in the correct folder (weren't moved or deleted). If the Pi was shutdown abruptly (not going Quit->Shutdown) that could also cause file corruption. Hope some of this helps.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      At a minimum, you'll want a heatsinks applied, though a cooling fan is recommended. If you begin seeing a small thermometer icon in the upper-right of the screen, that is an indication of thermal throttling (meaning, it's getting too hot and the CPU is being throttled to prevent over heating). I always thought "BIOS" was the screen you'd get to from tapping F8 or F5 or something while trying to boot a broken computer??? Can you clear this up for me? And is there someone or some place that can put all these files in one place to buy or download? Games are called ROMS and BIOS is something that needs to be downloaded and installed with the games? I just want to play old video games but it got so frustrating that I haven't even used my new Pi in at least six months, which I essentially wasted $130 on!

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      BIOS is the code that tells a computer (PC, Mac, Gaming console, etc.) how to access hardware within the machine. So yes, you're right it is the first thing used by a computer before loading an operating system. Although, gaming consoles are also computers and each has it's own way of communicating with the hardware on the machine and therefore has it's own BIOS. I can't provide links to BIOS or the game files themselves, but there are indeed collections of either. You'll need to enable the option, but you could use VNC: wagnerstechtalk.com/retropietips/#Remote_connect_to_RetroPie_from_PC . But, if you can't see the display to enable ssh, this isn't going to be much help. If you re-image the microSD, in Pi Imager there is a gear icon where you can enable vnc as well as setup WiFi while the image is created. That may work for you, but you won't see the UI just an SSH terminal session.

      For the Trackball games, I installed Advanced Mame (I believe it was under experimental). Then, copied over the games that need a trackball/spinner and made sure it used that emulator for Arkanoid, Centipede, etc. It worked fine. There is much less configuration with Advanced MAME, though a little more cumbersome to exit games. Give it a try and see if that helps you.

      You shouldn't need to rename the games. Keep in mind though, if you have a lot of games to scrape it will only allow scraping a certain number per day (I think it's 5k) depending on the scraper. So, you find that it stops at some point, that's typically why. Creating an account will remove the limitation.

If you’re unsure what I mean, you can read a bit more about my take on the subject here ( wagnerstechtalk.com/emulegal ). I can say, that both BIOS and some games can be found organized in archived packs. Plus, my HP laptop completely died while being forced to upgrade to Windows 11 and I have no way to solve that problem! Is there an easier way to play old NES and SNES games on my Pi? Where would I even find the "Bios" and games online??? It seems easier to buy one of these "Kinhank" or Super Console X systems with all that shit already on it, except that EVERY single video I've watched about them always has flaws or hundreds of games listed multiple times, etc. Not to mention that I own an 8gb Raspberry Pi already. I was disappointed that I can't even watch TH-cam videos at 720p/60 fps! 480 at 30 fps is the best I can get it to play! Is there something I'm missing with this emulation business? Or is there an easier way to do all of this? Please explain it to me as if I'm a five year old, cuz this shit is confusing!

You can search amazon for "retropie" and buy a pre-configured microSD card. I typically recommend the DIY route, but it's another option given your PC isn't functioning. Hi Jeremy, only two things I can think of that this could be: 1) Bad image download to the SD card or bad SD card or 2) A new update to RetroPie that is causing issues. Try re-imaging the SD card, if that doesn't work try again tomorrow or try with a different SD card (if you have another available). Could be the hosted image became corrupt on the download servers. All I can think of off-hand.

      Just re-imaged Retropie and set it up manually (not using the CTRL+SHIFT+X), worked fine and connected to my local network. This means 1) possible bad SD card/image 2) possible bad Pi. Try again, but use the CTRL+SHIFT+X method shown in the video to setup your network. It's possible that you didn't set your WiFi country which may be causing the issue you're experiencing (though, I've never seen the error you posted, but I always set the WiFi country). Also, make sure you're installing the version of RetroPie appropriate for your model Pi (Pi 400/4 Model B, etc.), that could also be the culprit. You could also install TwisterOS which comes bundled with RetroPie. However, in either case you would need to transfer over your existing files from the RetroPie image. You can definitely add RetroPie on top of PiOS, this is what was done with TwisterOS (which is running PiOS but with a lot of UI enhancements, apps, etc). There may also be a way to go in the reverse direction (RetroPie -> PiOS UI since both are PiOS), but it's not something I've tried nor needed to do. Definitely ask on the Subreddit above, I'd be curious to hear what others have done as well. I do know with PINN Lite you can have multiple partitions with different OSes installed: PiOS, another for RetroPie, another for Ubuntu or ... (many options). The main downside to PINN is that it first boots from a microSD before running the OS off the SSD.

      Hi Squishy, thank you for your kind comments! I'm not sure which method you're using (USB or network copy). You had me until you said you will need a Raspberry Pi. Can't seem to find one

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wasn't long ago, they were everywhere. But yes, they are in shorter supply at the moment. I've seen the Pi 400 at a reasonable price on Amazon and other cases such as the NESPi 4 and DeskPi Lite bundled with a Pi may be cheaper than buying a Pi stand-alone. Hopefully supply will catch back up with demand soon. Here's a link to the Pi4 cases that I've reviewed, incase it's helpful: wagnerstechtalk.com/guides/#Raspberry_Pi_Cases

    lost me at the bios and roms

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      BIOS files are the files that contain the actual code from the machine. For example, if want to play a PS1 game, the BIOS is the code from the original PS1 that was copied and saved to a file. The roms are the games themselves. You copy the BIOS/ROMs to the appropriate location for each. I have a little more information here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming/#Installing_ROMs

      @@WagnersTechTalk when I transferred the roms to my pi it literally wouldn't let me put more than one file into each individual roms folder. Also im not sure if I need to unzip the file before transferring or if transferring the actual content of the file over is fine

      If you listen carefully, you'll understand it creates the subfolders for you. Then, remove the USB stick, add your games and then re-insert it. No fairies involved and not Windows-specific lol. You may want to back up a bit to 07:00 so you can understand the whole picture rather than skipping ahead and leaving a not so nice comment about something that was fully explained in the video.
