Watch out for older variants. Revision 1.2 came out around Dec 2019 and that revision would give the user the option to use a power through put usc-c hub to both power the pi and to use for data transfer. There is no visible way for your device to be known to be an older model until you boot it up and look. Sadly the manufacturer is 100% to blame as you may have been solda defective product...and they truly didn't care, but instead took measures to hide this fact which can cause damage to to the unit in older revisions. But can do damage to whatever it is plugged into or has into it. Possibly even a fire, depending on usage.
Ok so I have no clue about any of this, i got one for Christmas, I think it’s the Raspberry Pi Retro Pi Emulation Station. I’m mostly just trying to figure out if and how I can emulate DS games.

Upon finally getting my hands on this POS I have to change my mind it absolutely SUCKS the emulation is still complete trash on the PI , I get better emulation on my 2015 fire 7 tablet that I paid $20 for 7 years ago and that has a screen and battery ( also comes with a housing and a power supply/charger too) even N64 SUCKS on the pi4 and the fire 7 kicks its ass maybe next time Eben this board is still just as useless as the first one.

Just a suggestion, in case you didn't, you will want to overclock the memory as well. When you overclock your GPU, it's severely limited by the frequency of the ram because it's a shared pool with the CPU.
Just got the newest 64gb microsd image off of arcade punks with the official retropie yesterday... dreamcast is running a lot better on pi4 now, was having a few issues with the unofficial builds.
Why is the audio skipping like crazy on the N64 games? Seems to be playing fine but the audio was fuzzed up. Is there certain core I need to use for them?
Retro pie is out but keep in mind it's still being worked on, the video drivers need work, and they can get more performance out of the pie4 then they are getting now
I've been interested in upgrading to a Pi 4, so I'm happy to hear the emulation for consoles that the previous Pi couldn't handle is coming along well. I'll probably wait until N64 emulation is better, but by then hopefully the price for the hardware has dropped a little more.
Yeah disappointed that n64 emulation is so crummy -- Dreamcast is a more advanced system! Many n64 games are just unplayable on my Pi 3B+ and I've just started exploring options to optimize by tweaking settings, overclocking, etc. I haven't exhausted options with the 3B+ yet, but after seeing only limited gains so far, I had considered upgrading to a 4 -- this is telling me to hold off.
The reason why the N64 versions are poor (ie requiring brute force power to emulate) is because the N64 hardware itself was poorly designed (a sign of stressed product rushed to market), most emulators particularly with protected IPs are reverse engineered and N64 has been notoriously complicated to figure out.
I was thinking the same, just 3D print some case with vents for cooling then he says the case is made of aluminum and the whole case is used for cooling, the only thing cooler would be if it were aerospace aluminum.
Even ps2 emulation on a PC is not stable. There's lots of games that haven't been able to be emulated to its fullest. For example Hot Shots Golf Fore. Your expectations are very far away with the pi4. Like others mentioned look for a GPD Win Max, or an used laptop.
@@gustavosoto4607 that's not a "portable" solution. Honestly though, snapdragon is powerful a lot or maybe amd cpu but only as a console, no keyboard...
Gustavo Soto Peralta why is ps2 emulation such a difficult thing even on PC? I knew the PS3 is hard af to emulate but I didn’t know the ps2 had the same problem is it because of the unique internal architecture in comparison to other systems?
Odroid XU4 still stomps the pi4 for every game emulator you mentioned here. Why not test and compare. I'm sure your audience would love to see the comparison.
The raspberry pi 4 with retropie is a work in progress. I have a kit running retropie and emulation station. If you are running hardwired controllers to the usb ports then this thing works great. I found with the new retropie for raspberry pi 4 is buggy in the bluetooth department. I purchased some wireless bluetooth pi game pads, the 8con bluetooth. One controller will not connect, the other does but it causes the pie to lock up on black screen for about 2 minutes when launching a game. After it launches it works. No issues with wired controllers. I cant wait till the get all the bugs worked out.
I recommend setting your hdmi output to 82 to have 1080p. This way, N64 games are more than playable (tested with Batocera on Golden Eye, default clock settings).

A little while back I bought the Raspberry Pi 3 model B+ I think that was the full title and I got it set up to run retropie. Very easy to do as there are many good tutorials online so anyone can do it if they put their mind to it. Even though mine came with heatsinks, the processor gets VERY hot so just don't put your finger near the processor after playing games even for 30 mins.
The retroflag nespi case is probably my favorite. Front usb, ssd tray and it looks like a cute little mini nes. Inferior cooling compared to this but not enough to worry about or come anywhere near the throttle point while OC'd.
I've been running RetroPi few a few days now and he's right - the Pi4 is an absolute monster. My only issue is that I need to keep it on a small desktop fan to keep it cool, as I'm running it OC'd to 2.1Ghz. GoldenEye and DK64 are known to be headaches to emulate on any hardware.
it's garbage , any cheap S905 android box is much better and my 2015 fire 7 is much better too N64 sucks on this device something a seven year old $20 fire tablet handles with no problem the Pi is just useless , trash WIFI , can't even emulate N64 , over priced since I can get a tablet or 4k fire stick for half the price on BF or prime day , no EMMC so your image will get corrupted even with the buggy unreliable shut down scripts they're on number 4 and it's still just a meme , don't even bother wasting your time with this garbage I have about 20 other much cheaper devices that burry this POS and that is before buying the case and power supply and storage you end up spending over $100 and still get piss poor performance that can't even rival a 7 year old device that you could get on sale for $20 SEVEN YEARS AGO! I wonder with all the Nintendo 64/Wii leaks, the N64 emulation will finally be solved..It's weird that PS1 and PSP games run perfect but an older system like N64 has always struggled on emulating.
N64, and ps2 were both very complicated systems that developers had a hard time getting good performance natively. Bring that over to emulation and it becomes 10x as hard.
@@EchoWinters Yep, it's because those systems were poorly designed, the more poorly constructed the architecture is, the more difficult the game programming and emulation becomes. The only difference is, the Ps2 (and 3) were intentionally designed that way, which is sad on Ken Kutaragi's part. A balanced, efficient system motherboard/chipset is always superior like the Ps1, Dreamcast, Gamecube and their emulation reflects that.

My comment was a year ago and I don't usually go that far back to understand what I was talking about. But I can tell you that
without knowing what device you have specifically. Nobody will help you. There are to many combinations to randomly give advice. So make a video and show any names or numbers etc. Describing it may help. Where you bought it and does it still have an active site, like an amazon page? I'm not an expert either. But it doesn't hurt me to look up something if you provide more info. Take into consideration, Pi machines are hobby computers. Its not a typical windows computer. Everything is an uphill battle. So you learning is more applicable to use it the way you want to.
I am so happy to be subscribed to you for all these years . We grew up together in the same school btw . Youre awesome !
i will say it is impressive to see redream and ppsspp running so well on a broadcom chipset
Upon finally getting my hands on this POS I have to change my mind it absolutely SUCKS
the emulation is still complete trash on the PI , I get better emulation on my 2015 fire 7 tablet that I paid $20 for 7 years ago and that has a screen and battery ( also comes with a housing and a power supply/charger too) even N64 SUCKS on the pi4 and the fire 7 kicks its ass
maybe next time Eben this board is still just as useless as the first one.
@@andreamitchell4758 How much ram did you get? I imagine 1gb wouldn't be that great for emulating, 2gb could handle it better overclocked (like the vid mentioned) but I think 4gb would be ideal

it seemed to work , no complaints about low power but a lot of the time the wifi was not working and on some boots there would be no sound
now that I have the official power supply so far the wifi has been working but I need to do more reboots, now that I have the official power supply I will try overclocking to see if I get better n64 performance
I love the amount of details about the Raspberry Pi is in this video. Fantastic.
I'm happy with my playstation classic which can play dreamcast, Nintendo 64, PSP,and DS games fairly well.
Extremely nice form factor and information delivery. Well done.
I use MiSTer for most of my retro gaming pre fifth gen, but for everything after, ODEs on original hardware are my go to. Pi 4 is certainly way easier on the wallet though. not just in initial price but also in electric bill!
Yeah these always sounded great. When I get a computer I'll definitely do emulators. Sounds amazing

@@5.0truck One of them.
Dreamcast still has my favorite startup music ever. I couldnt stop playing when I got one. Code veronica
Me: meh I can just 3D print a case
That case : I am full alluminium
Me: get on my pc and ordered one
I was thinking the same, just 3D print some case with vents for cooling then he says the case is made of aluminum and the whole case is used for cooling, the only thing cooler would be if it were aerospace aluminum.
Sadly still can't do ps2 emulation.... I wish it could so I can make ps2 handheld
Check out the gpd win max it can play ps2 portable but the price is on the high side
Even ps2 emulation on a PC is not stable. There's lots of games that haven't been able to be emulated to its fullest. For example Hot Shots Golf Fore.
Your expectations are very far away with the pi4. Like others mentioned look for a GPD Win Max, or an used laptop.
It's called a Playstation Vita. It can emulate PS2. There's videos on TH-cam on how to jailbreak it and install emulators on it
@@gustavosoto4607 that's not a "portable" solution.

N64 performance is pure trash
and I am also using it with Batocera, , it is not even worth using at all it is so bad
and this is with a pre made image from someone who claims to be a professional at setting up these OS's on these things, I can not even believe just how bad the pi 4 is a t EVERYTHING
I have a 7 year old amazon fire 7 I got for $20 on sale and it blows the pi 4 out of the water
this is one of the WORST devices I have ever used for N64 emulation I haven't even bothered to try DC or PSP , I can play mystical ninja on my 2015 fire 7 no problem , with the pi 4 it crashes the whole system and needs to be rebooted , other games all run pretty trash too
I waited till it was out over a year ,people said oh there are finally good emulators for it now BULLSHIT , it's hot garbage , and the WIFI is trash too like every other pi
not worth the time effort or money
Very powerful retroconsole 👏
I've been running RetroPi few a few days now and he's right - the Pi4 is an absolute monster.
My only issue is that I need to keep it on a small desktop fan to keep it cool, as I'm running it OC'd to 2.1Ghz.
GoldenEye and DK64 are known to be headaches to emulate on any hardware.
it's garbage , any cheap S905 android box is much better and my 2015 fire 7 is much better too
N64 sucks on this device something a seven year old $20 fire tablet handles with no problem
the Pi is just useless , trash WIFI , can't even emulate N64 , over priced since I can get a tablet or 4k fire stick for half the price on BF or prime day , no EMMC so your image will get corrupted
even with the buggy unreliable shut down scripts
they're on number 4 and it's still just a meme , don't even bother wasting your time with this garbage
I have about 20 other much cheaper devices that burry this POS and that is before buying the case and power supply and storage
you end up spending over $100 and still get piss poor performance that can't even rival a 7 year old device
that you could get on sale for $20 SEVEN YEARS AGO!
(grant it I know amazon only sells it so cheap because they expect you to buy their content but still) ,
FFS Eben get it together.

I was running _Metal Gear Solid & GranTurismo 2_ (PlayStation 1), _Mario Kart 64_ (Nintendo 64), without problems on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ back in like 2018… (but _Mario Kart 64_ was the only N64 game I got to run cleanly) Metal Gear Solid run over Retro Pi actually opened up some things that I was never able to experience while running on my Sony Playstation 1 _(SCPH-1001 model),_ it allowed you to run GameShark & with the help of GameShark you could get the Stealth Camouflage item & you could make it so none of the guards could ever detect you…it’s pretty cool…
Now all we need is the Gamecube on Pi and it’s game over
