      I bought a 2011 Volvo XC90 with 230,700 miles. When the car is cold, it shifts roughly but improves as it warms up. However, after driving 35 to 40 miles on the highway, it starts shifting roughly again, particularly from second to third gear. I'm considering changing the oil. Would it be advisable to replace it, or should I leave it as? Although the jerk is not severe, it is noticeable.

    Thanks for this video mate. I have to tackle the wife's XC90. Do you have any idea if the Aliexpress valve bodies are any good?

  • @johnamydaniel
    @johnamydaniel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really appreciate this awesome video. I'm going to have a go at this on our Ford with the same type of auto box.
    We're getting hard down shifts and sometimes a false neutral when stopping at lights and junctions, followed by a big thump into gear. Usually more so when the weather is warmer or the car has been driven harder.
    Would you say changing the valve block is a good move?

    • @YepThatsIt

      hi, would need to do a few more checks to determine, also depends on mileage, service history, fluid condition, amount of swarf/debris in trans fluid. start with basics and work your way up. often worth testing/checking/flushing solenoids. cheers

    • @johnamydaniel
      @johnamydaniel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YepThatsIt I've done about 30L of fluid flush since we purchased the car.
      The guy that owned it before was towing heavy loads and cooked the fluid. It's all nice and clean now though and the fluid change really improved the general behaviour of the gearbox but we still get the symptoms I outlined above now and then. It's on 100k miles and although the fluid was very dark I didnt notice any swarf.

    Hi, thanks for a good and very informative video! I have the same problems on my xc70 and I fear that it’s the solenoids that are faulty. If I order a repair kit with new solenoids will they fit anywhere on the valve body or do they go on their own places? Thanks in advance!

    I've got an X-Type with this gearbox and I'm getting a check-engine-light and communication fault with the TCM, even though the car and gearbox are running just fine. My cheap scanner is giving me some funky readings from the TCM, like telling me the gear oil temp is 8000°C, and that the control module is getting 60V, and that the car is in reverse when it's in P, all of which are clearly not the case, and the car itself probably doesn't think this either or it would be throwing a right hissy fit..
    The TCMs on these gearboxes are usually meant to be rock solid, so I'm thinking there could be an issue with the harness in the valve body, I think the temp sensor is on that harness too, in around the valve body somewhere.
    I'm thinking the TCM could be giving my cheap scanner an out-of-range reading and that the reading in the scanner is screwing up the other readings in a "millennium bug" kind of way. For example the gear ratio is showing as 65535 which in computer terms basically means a value is at it's 16-bit maximum, and has probably overflowed, the equivalent your beer glass being already full but you just keep on pouring and making a mess.
    I'm a bit reluctant to take off the valve body cover as there's not a lot of info about it on these cars since this model with the 6-speed auto was only in production for a year or so, and there's not much info on parts, temp sensor, harness, etc, around the place.
    This video is probably the best I've seen, so if I can pick up a gasket somewhere I might take the valve body off and have a little nosey around inside, it could probably do with an oil change anyway.

      hi, if you are having multiple weird fault codes, check ecu connection ( especially if near a/c vents may be condensation ) and contacts on plugs as well as measure with multimeter across earth straps - often earth traps are bolted to paint and contact is only through the thread of bolt - squirt some wd40 or crc or similar. make sure battery is charged and strong. modern day alternators dont charge battery, they just maintain voltage as the ecu pcm cant handle the voltage surges. contact me on our facebook link, for a few beers i can give you the temp sensor info. cheers

    Hello there great video, going to try this on my Peugeot 407 v6 it's juddering in 3rd and 4th but lately started to go into limp mode only done it once, but going to try to change all the solenoids instead you did not show how the solenoids came out because you were fitting a new block so did not need to show how the solenoids were attached to the valve body perhaps when you have the valve body in your hand I will be able to see, also any links and advice on where to buy the 8 solenoids don't want to do the job, and it goes faulty in a couple of months any help would be appreciated thanks good one

    • @YepThatsIt

    Hi, I'm using an anaerobic sealant which is the same my valve body cover was sealed with instead of an actual gasket. But I'm unsure of the torque specs for the valve body bolts. Should it just be tightened as best as possible or where can I find the torque specs?

    • @YepThatsIt
      @YepThatsIt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hi, overtightening valve body can inhibit proper movement of valves. generally vbody bolts 8-9Nm and valve body to case bolts 10-12Nm. always best to go by manufacturers specs and tightening sequence. cheers

    I want to replace the ATF in a 11 year old gearbox (peugeot 2012 6 speed) with only 40K on it could I warm the car drain the 3 L or so of oil , replace it , but then leave the small drain hole open wile reasonably quickly pouring in say another 7 or so L from the top to flush out the remaining nasty oil ? . or is it just best to do a drain every 25k or so and average out the quality of the ATF ?

    • @YepThatsIt
      @YepThatsIt  ปีที่แล้ว

      hi, whenever you have a trans pan you need to remove it and clean magnets ( add magnets as well ) replace filter. doing a fluid change on its own is useless unless you have coolant/water in trans. by overfilling you have chance that spinning components in trans will aerate fluid and cause it to come out of breather or any weak points. it would be better to do a few fluid changes with short drives in between if thats the direction you choose.see th-cam.com/video/1paq5RbiTNQ/w-d-xo.html and

    Hey, I’ve taken out all of the solenoids and tested them + flushed them. They all are ok. But The gearbox will still not function properly, it won’t go into gear… P is working but R,N and D is all neutrals it seems like.
    Still gets a DTC on solenoid slc3 but on one forum they said it could still be a faulty valve body and not the specific solenoid. Would you try and replace the valve body or just replace the gearbox for a "new" used one? The car has driven 334xxx kms..
    Thanks In advance!

      hi, if you get a fault code then means your have an electrical issue. often solenoids fail when they warm up as their resistance goes up with temp, which means the amperage has to come down. linear solenoids operate by ramping amperage, they arent on/off operation. cheers

    Hey, I have a problem with my XC90 with automatic transsmision (the same Aisin with 6 gears). After warming up engine, the Gearbox jerks once, abs error appears, then goes into emergency mode where it is impossible to change gear. The problem occurs when you try to shift from 3rd to 4th gear, the transmission locks up in 3rd gear. After connecting to the computer, an error occurred in the communication of the engine controller with the gearbox. Plugs checked, all OK. Have you ever encountered this problem and do you know where to look? Regards

    Wow, I can't believe they thought it was a good idea to put the speed sensors behind the valve body! I've got some wonky shifting and a P1719 Engine Torque Signal DTC. I'm guessing that one of the speed sensors is defective since if I clear the codes it comes back immediately with just key on, engine off... What's strange is all the related PIDs, input speed, output speed and Torque from Engine all look reasonable...

      hi, pretty sure i do mention it in my tf80sc vids...the filter is internaland you need trans disassembly to get to it. this is why regular service is critical, add magnets and inline filter in cooling line will help too. cheers

    Hi, thanks for this. ive puchased an 2006 xc90 D5 from someone who wasnt maintaining it and decided to get rid of it. Im experiencing this delayed shift and flare from 3-4 and the higher gears seem almost non existent. Im reaching 60mph/120KM max and it hardly revvs above 3000/3500 when I floor the pedal. Before this, the mechanic topped up the ATF since the shifting was harsh at the time and immediately that was solved but now its returned in this manner, with the shift flare or delayed gear change. Now, you mentioned that there are 2 types of VB's and I understand that from 07 onwards the VB's were updated due to a previous issue with the VB's. How do I know which is the correct VB ? Do you have the part number as I might need to get 1 if the series of ATF top-ups to come does not yield any good results.
    Kind regards from SA
