I'm on my 2nd X-Type estate.. 2.2 diesel, love it dearly.. Recently fitted new sills at close to £1000.. other than a new clutch back in 2021 I've only had to deal with service items.. new front discs/pads, wheel bearing.... and servicing..50mpg on M Ways, great overtaking potential in country lanes, Stunning car.. cream leather interior, almost everything electric, great colour, metallic green with minute gold flecks that light up in the sun, green tinted windows... covered 150k miles and drives beautifully.. I often hear people say.. Oh.. that's a Mondeo with a Jaguar badge.. that's a joke ..only around 20% of the car had Mondeo parts.. and those just improved reliability.. I wish they still made them, especially the 4 wheel drive versions as I recently moved to a very rural area and I feel the pain of hitting ruts and holes.. and winter with a 2 wheel drive might just not work on the moors of Exmoor..I hope I can hold on to it.. :>)

If the damage to the wing and the door weren't mentioned in the auction listing or shown in the pictures then it goes back, that is misrepresentation and the auction house should be ashamed of themselves.

    • @jaylangdon

Came here to say the same thing. Johnny says he has a good relationship with the auction house. Shouldn't be a problem taking it back then.

I agree. This guy is 100% honest and in this case it’s the auction house that should be embarrassed. Johnny’s personal responsibility is admirable though and it’s his judgement call. If he took it back though nobody could fault him.

I understand what you guys are saying and I know that lots of others would agree with you all, but I’m an old fashioned bloke. When I say I’m going to do something, I do it and when I say I’ll buy something blind, I accept the risks involved and I will stand on my word. Maybe this mindset is to my detriment but this is how I was brought up and it’s ultimately my core values. I can make this one much better…she deserves to be saved and I believe I’m the man for the job.

I think the auction were clearly helping a favoured vendor, ( probably one of their Main Dealer clients) seems to me, less than honest to portray a car with a very limited description and carefully chosen photos. However we live in a dog eat dog World, and if anybody can bring this car back from brink, you can. Doubtless it will be a lot of work, but so far it appears to be mechanically good, and virtually rust free, so in my humble opinion it is definately a worthwhile candidate for the Johnny treatment. If there is any justice in this World, when the work is complete, you will find an appreciative buyer, and hopefully a small profit at least. I can't wait for the next episode, to watch your progress. Good luck.

I'd be inclined to share this video series with the auction house, at least that way they're aware of what you've taken on and maybe would take more care with the listing in future? It's still caveat emptor but you really shouldn't expect the worst.

The 54 plate Land Cruiser I purchased recently looked superb in the pictures, so when I went to buy it I was already kind of convinced with the purchase considering it had only 128000, I thought that it had at least another 10 years in it, but upon closer inspection which I totally get I should've done on the guys drive, I found it had also received a large amount of filler in places, luckily I still own the previous Land Cruiser which massively failed the MOT so am in the process of taking parts from that and swapping them over only problem there is my lasy one was a champagne/beige colour and my newer one is black, so spraying is necessary, J it's a pain in the ass mate but I'm sure when the job is done, you would have gained a whole lot more experience on working on vehicles. The problem is, if someone like me doesn’t step in and save cars like this, there’s a solid chance that they will all disappear before much longer. I know it was a shady move the way this one was sold to me but I feel the car deserves another chance!

Why didn't the auction site show far better pics, to include close up of damage? Just not right Johnny, especially when you use them often. Shows a bit of shady practice.

There are a few reasons this could’ve been. Personally I think as it was from one of their big trade clients they couldn’t / wouldn’t refuse to sell the car and in order to shift it they employed some less than fair tactics. Still I’m an adult and the purchase is on me…I knew she had potential and I’m pleased to say that I think I’ve now got the car to stage where she’s safe from the scrap yard for at least a few more years yet!

Not sure why you would even consider getting a 2008 Jaguar to concourse condition, I know you’re not. It appeals to a certain owner and to be honest it’s old technology. Tidy it up and move it on.

“There’s a bum for every seat”…I’ve just got to make this seat a lot more appealing!

Strewth! "Economical with the Truth" springs to mind. Not a great advert for auction houses offering a remote purchase option, cheeky beggars! Got your work cut out here, Johnny. On the other hand....it will make bloody brilliant viewing. Lessons learnt I suppose. Ouch.

Isn't buying a used Jaguar almost a guarantee of buying a "LEMON "?
The marque isn't exactly known for its reliability and durability or for giving years and thousands of miles of trouble-free service.

I've just bought a 177,000 mile X300 Sovereign that has been parked for two years. Fresh fuel and a new battery got it purring on the first turn of the key.

We had a S2 here in states. Beautiful vehicle but reliability and quality were questionable at best. Headliner falling out which my dad said was a Jag trait since they’ve been made. Transmission failed just after warranty around 60k miles. Constant issues with coil packs would take months before throwing a usable code. Finally enough was enough and we parted with it.

I’d question the cost of painting it given what you can already see.. can you really return a profit with the amount of paint… honestly wouldn’t you be better flipping it.. what you see could be the top of the iceberg…

As far as I’m aware, this 2.2 diesel unit is very well thought of (I believe this was also fitted to the Ford Transit which as we all know is designed to be something of a workhorse!)
