  • Episode 185: Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, Renal Diet, Life Expectancy & more. Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3 is not something that just comes on suddenly. Instead, it progresses over time due to chronic kidney disease. There are five stages of kidney disease. It starts with mild kidney damage in stage one. If this condition goes unmanaged it will progress up to stage 5, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This is when kidney failure sets in and the kidneys no longer work and dialysis is required to filter the blood. In stage 3 there is still time to preserve kidney health. It may also prevent someone from losing all kidney function and needing dialysis. Renal Dietitian Jen Hernandez discusses Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3 and offers tips to slow down or even stop the progression of kidney disease.

I have just found this and I thank you. My GP in the UK has completely ignored the fact that my GFR is 30, no consultation, no advice, nothing . The waiting lists in the UK are so long and self help seems to be the only way forward. You have given me clear outlines how to do that. Thank you

@@lesbear9828 hello Les. You’re very kind to think of me. To update you we (myself and my doctor) have come to realize my poor eGFR and Creatinine was due to a combination of drugs that had a bad effect on my Creatinine. It was two cholesterol meds that, one normal dose and the other an extremely high dose. The prescribing doc was in Fla where we lived for two years then came back home to NJ and saw my old doc and he knew something was up. Took him a few visits and months but he got me off the high dose and just to a single smaller dose and it’s pretty good. eGFR IS 74 which he seems please with. But Les, when I was first diagnosed it was your pod cast that brought me some relief! I was devastated and thought my time was short! Your a kind man and humanitarian! I ended up buying Dr Rosansky’s book which was insightful. For people, like me who only had a doctor to turn to but no one to talk to you were a god send. Thank you again! Hoping this finds you well and still enjoying your occasional cheat and feeling your best. Thank you again for the thought of reaching out to me. God bless!

I got a surprise CKD diagnosis Stage 4b last year. after ending up in the ER with an eGfr of 21. I have been taking Losartan and Farxiga but the MOST IMPORTANT thing I did was to consult with a nutritionist and CHANGE my dietary choices. Mind you my primary doc and nephrologist both told me it was not necessary to see a dietician and that I'd end up on dialysis. My eGfr is now up to 30 and other labs i.e. BUN, Albumin, Phosphorus, Protein look significantly improved- I am now in Stage 3b, according to my nephrologist. Thank you SO MUCH for the useful info!!!

A lot of these Doctors keep secrets until things go bad. They are NOT Transparent at all! If you don't ask a lot of times they won't tell! My kidney function is 40% yet I've got NO kidney conversation until Protein got in my urine. Yet I've been inquiring for 4 years to only be ignored! I had a real bad back issue and my kidneys were NEVER mentioned. I couldn't walk 5 feet without a wheelchair. Still my had NOTHING to say or would not acknowledge my kidneys. I started urinating blood and it was very painful. I went to the ER and they said I had kidney stones!

I have occasional episodes of hyperkalemia, so I do need to watch my potassium levels, but it is pretty easy... I am allowed up to 2000mg per day-- but aim for 1500mg sodium. I don't always hit goal, but I do manage to get back on track most of the time. COVID lockdown has taken a huge toll though, I am very stress-reactive, and I am now in stage four. Got to figure out how to let it go! (cue : me singing FROZEN theme song...)LOL

Just a quick message from NZ. My kidney function was surgically cut in half when I had nephrectomy for kidney cancer. Hence I am jow stage 3a. Nor problem swith urine and bloodtests with electrolytes and potassium etc. Here in New Zealand we have a public health system and you cannot get to see a nephrologist or meet with a renal dietician until you are nearing eGFR of 30.

I think it would be wise for you to bring the possibility, or idea, of 'conservative care' to the conversation. Do it when you have the retired Nephrologist on so he can add to the pool of experiences. You do not have to be pro or anti. Just present the facts for all of the more elderly to hear before being shuttled off to a dialysis dungeon.

Eating healthy is important - and it's much easier than it sounds. We have lots of videos with renal dietitians (including a LIVE show tonight on meal planning) that can help you with stage 3. Stage 3 is a great place to manage CKD.

I've just been told I'm stage 3 by a nurse practitioner (you very rarely see doctors in the UK these days) but to my horror I've had ckd since 2015 and they've never told me (I get blood checks yearly for cholesterol) so I can't believe that for 8 years I've been eating things like bananas, processed foods, melons, etc etc all of which I could have avoided if I'd known earlier. Honestly I've had more info off You Tube than I've been given at the surgery. Thank you for your input.

I have similar, just been told at stage 3, but my egfr has been around 62 , since 2009 but have never had urine test for protein so could've had stage 2 for 15years !! . I h ave blood tests each year as on BP meds, nothing ever mentioned, wish I had been told as I feel I could have made positive changes earlier , when I was younger and fitter feeling a bit down with it all.
