- I want to replace the tank as it has a nasty layer of gunk on the bottom and I suspect I'll eat through the bottom if I start cleaning it. The fuel gauge has never moved, so this will be a good time to look into that. Then I learn that what is advertised as a 60-64 tank turns out to be a 63 tank, and needs to be modified to fit a 64 car. Follow along to see what I did along the way of fuel tank replacement.
I've been pretty lucky with my late father's 64 Galaxie. As far as I know it is the original tank and sending unit and still works well. When I shine a light down the filler neck on a nearly empty tank it still looks real clean. I also own a 2006 Monte SS that i bought new.
This Monte is a 220k beater that won't die but I have an 87 SS and 88 SS also. The only reason I keep this Monte around is that the heated seats absolutely cook and I think it is what keeps my old man back alive during the winter. I only shut it off from June to August!
I had to put a new tank in mine this spring. I took it out and started cleaning it, blew a bunch of holes in it with a pressure washer LOL.
I just intaled a new spectra brand fuel tank on my 64. Very much the same as in this video. And wow, it burbs at the gas station so much and It wont hold more than 5 gallons. Oh, and my gage does not work. HELP!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't had any issue like that. My new sending unit isn't that accurate but I'm used to it at this point.
@@ssmonte8738 Thanks for replying. I also have a new sending unit. But I got to say, this sucks! I guess the hunting to this issue continues. I did plug the breather. I did check the fuel hose connected to the fuel line, and no cracks. So I know it’s not sucking in air. Welp, back to the drawing board.
Turn the key on and then check gauge with the sender unhooked and with it grounded with a jumper wire.
@@ssmonte8738 ok, so basically disconnect the wire to the sending unit and the turn the key over to see if the gauge needle turns…… correct?
Yep, no need to have it running, just key on and see if the gauge moves with the wire disconnected and with it grounded.
Where did you get your gas tank from? And how much did it cost?
I got it on ebay for about $190. I'll put a link in the video description.
