    Update! Watched Gerald Undone's video and have some thoughts about the streaking. I too had issues with magenta streaking in some scenes early in my testing. Reported to Panasonic and they issued a firmware update. Once updated, the issue was gone or so I thought. I have not seen it since but other reviewers have reached out and let me know it still exists so I'll have to do some more testing and will update you guys in a live stream. Great video, emphasizing as always the different points you'll want to consider. This thing looks like at least a triple if not a home run. Image quality, dynamic range, assist features, stabilization, audio options, and given that after all these years Lumix is like my mom's cooking, it's just what I prefer, looks like I'll be picking one up. I'd sure like to see it compared to the BMPCC 4K, since that was an "upgrade path" I was considering. All I know is I looked at the colors and said wow. My clients don't ask about RAW and so forth. They just want it to look great, and this does. Might be the big brother my GH5 wants. Thanks, Caleb. This is big news.

    The GH6 looks fantastic, and I plan on picking one up! I really wish folks wouldn't judge so hard solely on AutoFocus. If you're shooting on a high end camera like a RED, no DP or cinematographer is concerned about autofocus. That being said, the GH5 AF was just fine. It was no Sony but it worked great. It was just trashed by some TH-camrs (die-hard Sony fans) who failed to read their camera manuals, and put it through absurd tests.

    • @Sam-vi2ho
      @Sam-vi2ho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing with shitty panasonic focus is that talking-head shots when you're on your own become a nightmare. I've got a g7 and g9, they're amazing workhorses and work perfectly with an operator behind the camera, but the autofocus issues were enough of an issue for me to buy a canon 90d with the godly sigma 18-35 lens. The sacrifice of IBIS for autofocus that works is probably worth it to 99% of youtubers and streamers.

    • @ekumusicYT
      @ekumusicYT ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally never use autofocus, no matter what camera, when filming anything talking head or interviews or stuff like that... and since it's a micro four thirds, I don't get nearly as much shallow depth of field anyway but it is a good thing for focus... even without moving the manual focus at all, the subject is basically always perfectly in focus :)@@Sam-vi2ho

    Thier DFD is probably the best contrast AF on the market, if they would only make it hybrid with some phase detection. It would be as good or better than the competitors. Not sure why they stay with DFD only. Great video and presentation of the camera.

    • @CallMeRabbitzUSVI
      @CallMeRabbitzUSVI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They stay with DFD because when you implement Phase detection into the sensor, it actually affects photo quality since it adds lines into the sensor which they will have to compensate for. This is something Panasonic wants to avoid to give you the crispiest shots but if you ask me it's very negligable and they should stop being weird since every other manufacturer has overcome this issue

      DFD autofocus is just a bad outdated technology and will never be even close to phase detect af
      they have been trying for 10+ years and its hopeless their flagship can only shoot 7 fps with cont af
      what a joke it can not even compete with cameras half the price that are several years old now

      @Random Thought have Shot extensively with a g9 and with the gh5ii so i do know what i am talking about . A lot of Gimbal Work too and i can tell you thats we Had to retake a lot of shots because of soft Focus or flickering and focus pumping . Before we switched to Sony at first we had a7iii and a6400 we mostly used the a6400 because the laserlike focus . Now we pretty much only use the a7siii and it Is a film makers dream . Maybe you think the af is as good because only used it twice . And the mft system Is not Bad when you can Manual Focus but If not it Is really not good

    I think the Boosted Dynamic Range feature is a bit gimmicky. I think I would rather dual ISO. Least that way you have 2 spots you can trust, where as with it now, do you really want to be shooting 2000 ISO in most situations?
    And think of the filters you'd need to get!
    The stronger the filter, generally speaking, your going to lose something with the colors and clarity. Kinda defeats the point in my opinion. So the +1 stop of dynamic range during the day has too much trade off in my opinion. Your better of just getting a FF camera with 14 stops and not have to worry about what ISO.

    • @sasca854

      Disagree. The GH6's colors are far too heavy on the yellows and greens. Makes you look sick. 8:34 the GH5S could probably use some scaling back on the magentas, but he looks jaundiced on the GH6. His facial hair is green! Also not sure why you're making judgments on what a "pro" should be doing. I could just as easily say that a pro shouldn't be using a hybrid M43 mirrorless camera in the first place. A pro will use any/all tools at his or her disposal, and AF is a tool. Nothing more.

    • @renatovelarde422
      @renatovelarde422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sasca854 uh, I'm not saying it's "more or less" than a tool. I'm just saying people freak out about the quality of it like it's the #1 thing they're looking for when it's a tool that's risky to use in professional applications where most DP's find focus well before rolling or work out a way to adjust focus more reliably in general. No matter how good autofocus is it's an unknown factor that a computer is controlling, so for any big job it's risky to use at all. If you do loads of one-person things without an AC (or on a gimbal) than great, Autofocus is important. I work that way a lot, but I still personally wouldn't trust any autofocus on a paying job, it's just nice to have for quick personal things and photo stuff. It's not some personal judgement.

    I was expecting it to be around the same price as a a7siii for some reason,

    Great video Caleb!...just to be clear, 4k 30p uses full width, full sensor readout. Looking at your diagram made me think that only 5.7k (1:1 read) is full wide.

    OOoooohh. That's the first I've heard about recording externally to SSDs. I was hoping for that on the S1 series.

    Would you recommend the GH6 for studio product videography for professional work? or what would you recommend?

  • @mil0931
    @mil0931 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel like GH6 is meant to be rigged. That would explain grip, monitor info, and not much improvement in auto focus department. The sensor is a game changer. I feel like now, Sony is for vlogers, and content creators, and GH6 is for filmmakers

    Hi Caleb and thanks for yet another great review. I've been thinking about getting the Blackmagic 6K Pro. Generally, how would you compare them? Thanks for all of your help over the years helping me choose the right gear for my needs.

  • @EmileModesitt
    @EmileModesitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My question is... if you don't NEED the square-ish sensor and aren't penny pinching, why buy this over the A7Siii/FX3/R5/R5c/BMPCC6KPRO? Those other cameras seem to offer similar (and sometimes better) specs in many ways while also not having to worry about horrendous noise above 5000 ISO and trash dynamic range any time you're not using "DR Boost."

      The only reason I could honestly think of is IBIS. Sony IBIS is horrendous and I know because I have used many Sony cameras before. Honestly if Sony fixed their IBIS without forcing you to crop or if Panasonic fixed their autofocus, then we'd be very close to perfect cameras.

    Thank you for your incredibly informative review! I also am happy with the G9 auto focus. But I still find I'm relying on my Sony a6400 for fast action people shoots. May I ask what lens you used for the review? I noticed the Speedbooster but I couldn't read which lens. I'm guessing it's the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 DC DSM Canon mount? Did you do any testing with Lumix lenses?

    8:32 I dunno if I agree with you here. It looks like you're in the early stages of a hepatic crisis on the GH6 lol. Sure, the GH5S is favoring magenta a bit too much, but your beard looks green on the GH6.

    Man, I was hoping for some kind of internal ND, physical or electronic. I know, I know…they probably had to keep it out to keep the body so small, but I’m so done with screw-on ND filters. I’m also kind of done with speed boosters, which is why I’m actually considering the BMPCC 6K Pro instead of this. But, dude, can you imagine if Panasonic put the GH6 specs in a BMPCC sized body with room for internal ND and mini XLR inputs? That camera would be unstoppable.
